There is no single UPI amount that applies to every user, app, bank, or payment. The amount that succeeds is determined by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) ceiling for that transaction category, your bank’s own cap, the merchant’s eligibility, and any daily, count, credit, or security restrictions on your account.

For a large transfer, treat the published NPCI figure as a ceiling rather than a guarantee. Your linked bank or card issuer may allow less, and an app cannot override a lower bank limit. The practical question is not simply “What is the UPI limit?” but “What is the permitted limit for this account, payment type, merchant, and time period?”

What a UPI limit actually controls

A UPI limit is usually discussed as a rupee amount, but several different controls operate at the same time. Confusing them is a common reason a payment fails even when the amount appears to be below a published maximum.

Control Who sets it What it means
NPCI ceiling NPCI The network-level maximum for a defined transaction category.
Bank or issuer cap Your member bank or card issuer An internal limit that can be lower than the NPCI ceiling.
Merchant and transaction category NPCI rules, acquiring bank, and merchant classification Determines whether a higher category ceiling is available.
Time-based allowance Your bank or issuer A daily amount, daily transaction count, rolling allowance, or other account rule.
Security and account status Your bank Temporary blocks, risk controls, PIN-attempt restrictions, or account-specific holds.

These controls are cumulative. A payment must satisfy all of them. A ₹5 lakh network ceiling, for example, does not make ₹5 lakh available to every UPI account.

NPCI’s published per-transaction ceilings

The current NPCI FAQ distinguishes ordinary UPI payments from specific higher-limit categories. The figures below are per transaction, not automatic daily allowances.

Payment category NPCI ceiling stated in the source Important qualification
Normal UPI transactions ₹1 lakh This is the general ceiling; a bank may set a lower internal limit.
Capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances Up to ₹2 lakh The category must qualify, and the bank or participating service can still apply a lower cap.
IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments Up to ₹5 lakh Available only for eligible payments in those schemes, subject to bank and issuer controls.
Tax-payment-aligned categories ₹5 lakh The 28 August 2025 NPCI circular applies the enhanced ceiling to merchants categorized as “Verified Merchant.”

“Up to” is important. These are policy ceilings published by NPCI, not a promise that every app, bank account, merchant, or user can send the maximum.

Why the app you use does not tell the whole story

People often ask whether one UPI app has a higher limit than another. The app provides the interface, but the payment is processed through the payer-side payment service provider and the bank account or card linked to it. The bank’s policy, the receiving merchant’s classification, and the transaction category remain decisive.

No current official cross-provider table establishes a universal daily or per-transaction amount for each named app. An app may display a limit, reject a payment, or route it through a particular bank, but that behavior is not evidence that every user of the app receives the same allowance. Two people using the same app can see different results because they use different banks, account types, risk profiles, or linked instruments.

What an app can affect

  • Which bank accounts or cards are available to select.
  • Whether the app recognizes a merchant or scheme as an eligible category.
  • How clearly it displays a bank-provided remaining allowance or error message.
  • Whether a payment is retried through another linked account.

What an app cannot override

  • The NPCI ceiling for the transaction category.
  • A lower internal limit imposed by the linked bank.
  • An issuer’s available credit or prohibited card transaction category.
  • A temporary account block or exhausted daily allowance.

For that reason, changing apps is not a reliable way to obtain a higher limit. If the bank or merchant is the restricting party, the same payment can fail in another app as well.

How ordinary person-to-person transfers are treated

For a normal person-to-person (P2P) transfer, the general NPCI ceiling remains the relevant reference point. The 2025 tax-payment circular did not replace the existing P2P framework; it raised the ceiling for qualifying tax-payment-aligned merchants instead.

A bank can still impose a lower P2P amount, a daily total, or a daily transaction count. Some banks also apply separate rules to newly added beneficiaries, recently changed mobile numbers, dormant accounts, or accounts that trigger risk checks. Those are bank controls, not new NPCI transaction categories.

When higher limits apply

Capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances

NPCI’s FAQ lists these categories with a ceiling of up to ₹2 lakh per transaction. The higher figure applies because the payment is classified for one of the stated uses. A normal transfer to an individual is not converted into this category merely because the amount is large or the recipient is a financial-services customer.

IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments

Eligible IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments have an NPCI ceiling of up to ₹5 lakh per transaction in the FAQ. The payment flow, participating bank, and scheme rules must support the category. The figure does not create a general ₹5 lakh allowance for shopping, rent, transfers to friends, or other ordinary UPI uses.

Tax payments and the “Verified Merchant” condition

NPCI circular NPCI/UPI/2025-26/OC/185B, dated 28 August 2025, raised the per-transaction ceiling for entities in categories aligned to tax payments. The circular states that the enhanced limit applies to merchants categorized as “Verified Merchant” and directs acquiring banks to ensure the higher limit for compliant merchants.

If the tax service is not classified in the required way, the higher ceiling may not be available. A tax-related description in an invoice or payment note is not, by itself, proof of the merchant status. The acquiring bank and the payment flow must carry the appropriate classification.

How your bank can set a lower limit

NPCI’s circular expressly preserves member-bank discretion: “Member banks may continue to be provided the discretion to set their internal limits based on their internal policy, within the overall ceilings prescribed by NPCI.” In practice, this means a bank may choose a lower per-transaction amount, daily amount, or count limit for security, product design, or risk-management reasons.

The lower cap can differ by savings or current account, customer segment, linked debit account, newly registered device, or other bank policy. A bank may also show a separate limit for a particular channel even when another channel uses the same account. The only dependable value for your account is the one shown by the bank or confirmed by its support channel.

RuPay Credit Card on UPI has two separate ceilings

NPCI states that RuPay Credit Card on UPI follows standard UPI transaction limits. That network ceiling is only one part of the decision. The card issuer also controls the available credit, merchant categories permitted for UPI, and any issuer-specific restrictions.

Available credit is not the same as the UPI ceiling. A card could have enough unused credit for a large purchase while the UPI category, bank policy, or merchant status permits less. Conversely, a category may have a high NPCI ceiling while the card has insufficient available credit. Both conditions must be satisfied before authorization can succeed.

Per transaction is not per day

The NPCI figures above describe the maximum for one transaction. Banks and payment systems can separately enforce:

  • A daily rupee allowance across all UPI payments.
  • A daily transaction-count allowance.
  • A rolling 24-hour or other time-window rule.
  • Separate allowances for P2P, merchant payments, cards, or special categories.
  • Temporary restrictions after device, SIM, beneficiary, or profile changes.

NPCI ecosystem statistics list exceeding per-transaction, daily amount, or daily count limits among reasons a transaction can fail. Therefore, a payment may be below the one-transaction ceiling and still be rejected because earlier payments used the available daily allowance.

Security restrictions that look like limit errors

Repeated incorrect UPI PIN entries may cause a temporary block on sending money, and NPCI notes that the behavior varies by bank. This is an account-security control, not a higher or lower transaction category.

If your PIN is correct but transfers remain blocked after several failed attempts, stop retrying. Further attempts can prolong the restriction under the bank’s policy. Use the bank’s documented unblock or PIN-reset process, or contact the bank through an official channel. Do not disclose the PIN, one-time password, card PIN, or full credentials to anyone claiming to fix the limit.

How to check the amount before making a large payment

  1. Identify the payment type. Decide whether it is P2P, an ordinary merchant purchase, an IPO, a Retail Direct Scheme payment, insurance, a collection, a capital-markets payment, a foreign inward remittance, or a tax payment.
  2. Confirm the merchant classification. For a tax payment relying on the 2025 enhanced ceiling, verify that the payment flow identifies the merchant as a qualifying “Verified Merchant.”
  3. Check the linked instrument. Confirm which bank account or RuPay Credit Card will actually be debited. Do not assume the app’s default account is the one you inspected.
  4. Review the bank’s UPI controls. Look in the bank’s UPI or payments section for per-transaction, daily amount, and daily count information. If the bank does not display it, ask support for the limit on that specific account.
  5. Check remaining allowance. Add earlier UPI payments in the relevant time window and account for pending or reversed transactions if the bank includes them.
  6. Verify balance or available credit. A sufficient bank balance or card limit is necessary but does not replace the UPI and category checks.
  7. Send only after the payee details are verified. A successful authorization is generally difficult to reverse, so confirm the recipient, merchant name, amount, and purpose before entering the PIN.

Examples of how the rules interact

Example: ordinary transfer

You attempt to send money to another person. The ordinary NPCI ceiling is the starting point, but your bank may set a lower per-transaction cap. If you have already reached the bank’s daily amount or count allowance, an otherwise valid amount can still fail.

Example: eligible IPO payment

An IPO application can fall within the higher IPO category ceiling, but the participating bank must support the flow and your account must satisfy its internal rules. The higher category ceiling does not turn other payments from that account into IPO-eligible payments.

Example: tax payment

A tax-payment merchant may qualify for the ₹5 lakh ceiling under the 28 August 2025 circular only when the merchant and acquiring-bank classification meet the “Verified Merchant” condition. A lower bank limit or exhausted daily allowance can still prevent the payment.

Example: RuPay Credit Card

A cardholder may have unused credit but still be unable to complete a UPI payment because the issuer blocks that merchant category or applies a lower UPI cap. Credit availability and UPI eligibility must be checked separately.

What to do when a payment fails

  1. Read the exact error. Distinguish “limit exceeded,” “daily limit,” “transaction declined,” “PIN blocked,” “insufficient funds,” and “merchant not supported.”
  2. Check whether earlier attempts counted. Some bank systems reserve or count attempts even when the merchant does not receive money. Confirm the status before retrying.
  3. Confirm the account and category. Make sure you did not select a different linked account or assume a special-category limit applies to a normal transfer.
  4. Wait out a security block. Follow the bank’s stated reset period or recovery process after incorrect PIN attempts.
  5. Use an approved alternative only when appropriate. A bank transfer method supported by the recipient may work, but splitting payments to evade a limit can trigger additional controls and may be unsuitable for regulated categories.
  6. Contact the bank or issuer. Provide the transaction reference, time, amount, merchant, and error code. Never provide your UPI PIN or one-time password.

How to interpret a limit displayed in an app

An in-app number may represent the bank’s current allowance, the maximum for one transaction, a remaining daily amount, or a generic help-page figure. Check the label and time period. “Available today,” “per transaction,” and “daily count” are different values.

If the app and bank show different figures, treat the bank’s account-specific rule and the lower applicable ceiling as controlling. A generic app message cannot expand an NPCI category or override the issuer’s decision.

Keeping the figures current

NPCI’s FAQ is a live page, and the NPCI circular index contains later circulars. Policy can therefore change after the 2025 tax-payment circular. Before relying on a precise amount for a high-value payment, check the latest NPCI guidance and your bank’s current terms. The bank or issuer remains the final source for the amount available on your account at that moment.
