Unsaid is an open-source reflection app designed to let people talk through difficult thoughts with a locally run AI model. Its creator, Anirudha Basu Thakur, built it for a friend who experiences ADHD, racing thoughts, and late-night overthinking. The project describes local inference and local storage, but those are maintainer claims—not independently audited guarantees. If you want a private-feeling space to think without using a cloud AI, Unsaid’s three distinct reflection modes and its local setup are the key things to understand.
What Unsaid is—and what “local-first” means here
Unsaid is an open-source application for guided reflection, not a general-purpose chatbot. The creator describes a React 19, TypeScript, and Vite interface connected to a local Gemma model through LM Studio or Ollama. The repository README documents LM Studio’s OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:1234/v1, browser localStorage, and optional synchronization to ~/.unsaid/reflections.json for the command-line client.
In this design, the model can run on the user’s computer rather than sending reflection prompts to a hosted AI service. The README also says the app makes zero cloud calls. That is the project’s stated architecture, not proof from an independent network or security audit. The launch article mentions an ElevenLabs voice companion, while the README describes a procedural text-to-speech player and local voice workflow. The documentation reviewed does not establish whether current functionality sends personal data to ElevenLabs, so don’t treat either description as a complete, audited account of every network interaction.

Choose a reflection room for the kind of thought you have
The repository presents three modes as separate experiences with their own prompts and purposes:
Talk Through It
Use this mode to examine an active dilemma at a measured pace. It is intended to help you work through the question rather than rush to a conclusion.
Just Unload
This is for stream-of-consciousness writing when you want to get thoughts out without unsolicited advice. It is not the mode to choose if you specifically want a plan or recommendations.

Ways to try and run the app
| What you want | Documented route | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Explore with little setup | Browser demo with an offline preview simulator | The preview is described as a simulator; it does not demonstrate that your computer is running local model inference. |
| Run a model locally | Install Node.js 18 or later and LM Studio, load a recommended Gemma model, start the local server, and run Unsaid | Requires setup and hardware capable of running the selected model. The creator’s 8 GB report is not a tested system requirement. |
| Dictate instead of type | Use optional Handy for offline dictation or the built-in browser speech-recognition path | Handy is the documented offline option. Browser speech-recognition privacy behavior can depend on the browser implementation and was not independently checked. |
| Work in a terminal | Use the Node.js CLI shell, including its reflection, history, and export commands | This developer-oriented route is for users comfortable with a command-line interface. |
What local setup involves
The README lists Node.js 18+, LM Studio, and an open Gemma model as the intended setup. It recommends Gemma 3 4B or Gemma 2 2B IT. Handy is optional if you want the documented offline dictation integration.
- Install Node.js 18 or later. This is the version floor in the project README.
- Install LM Studio and load a supported Gemma model. The README recommends Gemma 3 4B or Gemma 2 2B IT; the launch article also describes local inference through Ollama.
- Start LM Studio’s local server. The documented endpoint is
http://localhost:1234/v1. - Run Unsaid using the repository’s setup instructions. The project also documents a local development server, desktop mode, and a terminal client; follow the README for the relevant commands and configuration.
- Choose whether to add voice input. Handy is optional. Browser speech recognition is another documented path, but should not be assumed to have the same offline behavior.
The README describes browser localStorage for reflections and optional synchronization to ~/.unsaid/reflections.json for CLI use. These are distinct storage paths; check the project’s current setup instructions before relying on a particular persistence or synchronization behavior.

Voice, privacy, and safety boundaries
The README documents optional Handy integration and browser speech recognition for dictation, a procedural text-to-speech player for reading reflections aloud, and ambient audio generated with the Web Audio API. These descriptions differ from the launch article’s mention of an ElevenLabs voice companion. Because the available project descriptions are not an independent audit, users with strict privacy requirements should inspect the current code and observe network behavior before entering sensitive material.
The README also lists an app lock, prompt-injection and clinical-boundary defenses, client-side personal-information masking, and a crisis intervention layer. These are stated features, not independently verified protections or evidence of clinical effectiveness. Do not rely on them as a substitute for appropriate professional or emergency support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Unsaid is not therapy or crisis care
The project explicitly says it is not mental-health care, therapy, counseling, diagnosis, or clinical intervention. It says the app does not diagnose conditions or prescribe treatment. Treat its responses as an automated reflection aid, not as the judgment of a clinician or an authority on what you should do.

Who may find it useful
Unsaid is aimed at people who want a structured place to think privately before talking with someone else—or who want to write without immediately seeking advice. Its creator frames the project around moments when thoughts move faster than speech and people worry about burdening others, being misunderstood, or judged. That framing and the friend’s account are personal context, not evidence of measured user outcomes.
The creator reproduces the friend’s response as: “Unsaid is the first time I felt like I had a door I could shut behind me.” It is attributed testimony shared by the author, not an independently documented interview or a typical-user result. The project is published under the MIT License, and the reviewed materials describe a browser demo and self-hosted setup.
