Underwater aircraft wreck searches combine historical research, precisely positioned remote sensing and archaeological recording. Teams survey a defined area with complementary instruments—usually side-scan sonar, multibeam sonar and magnetometers—then investigate candidate anomalies with divers or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). A confirmed site is documented in place with coordinates, measurements, photographs, video and debris-field mapping; overlapping images can be processed into a photomosaic or 3D model.
What the search is actually trying to find
A search does not necessarily lead to an intact airplane. It may locate a concentrated wreck, a scattered debris field, buried components or a magnetic and acoustic anomaly that needs further investigation. The objective should therefore be stated before equipment is selected: locate any aircraft-related material, identify a particular aircraft, map the entire site, assess its condition, or create a record without disturbing it.
Historical work narrows the likely area using accident reports, wartime records, eyewitness accounts, currents, water depth and known navigation errors. Those inputs define a search polygon, but they do not prove where the wreck lies. Surveyors still need a navigation system, a track plan, suitable sensors and a method for evaluating uncertainty.
NOAA Ocean Exploration summarizes the principle this way: “The tools used to locate underwater archaeological sites are essentially the same tools used to explore the seafloor.” The archaeological difference is the care taken with context, documentation and site management after a target is found.

Why several sensors are used together
No single instrument answers every question. Sonar can show shape and relief; magnetometry can reveal ferrous material even when it is buried; bathymetric systems measure seabed form; and visual systems provide the evidence needed to interpret an anomaly. Sensor records only become useful when each reading is tied to an accurate position and assessed alongside the others.
| Method | Primary information | Typical strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side-scan sonar | Acoustic image of seabed texture, objects and shadows | Efficient broad-area search and detailed imagery of exposed relief | Does not measure depth or provide bathymetry by itself |
| Multibeam sonar | Bathymetry and three-dimensional seabed shape | Maps depth, slopes and site morphology | Interpretation depends on sound conditions, coverage and positioning |
| Magnetometer | Variation in Earth’s magnetic field | Detects ferrous aircraft material, including some buried objects | Geological magnetic sources and other metal can create non-wreck anomalies |
| Sub-bottom profiler | Acoustic structure beneath the seabed | Investigates buried layers and objects | Performance varies with sediment and acoustic conditions |
| ROV or diver inspection | Images, observations and measurements at the target | Confirms or rejects interpretations and records artifacts | Depth, current, visibility and safety limit access |
NOAA’s mapping guidance emphasizes configuration, calibration, coverage, navigation, target detection, quality control, uncertainty and processing. A visually striking sonar mark without those controls may be impossible to relocate or compare with later observations.
Side-scan sonar: the broad-area imaging tool
Side-scan sonar sends acoustic pulses to either side of a towfish or vehicle and records returning echoes. Hard or elevated objects produce strong returns, while the area behind them may appear as an acoustic shadow. A fuselage, engine or wing can therefore stand out from softer seabed even when the image does not show the object as a photograph would.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFrequency is a coverage-versus-detail choice. NOAA’s explainer gives 50–100 kHz as an example of lower-frequency operation for wider, lower-resolution coverage and 500 kHz–1 MHz as an example of higher-frequency operation for narrower, higher-detail coverage. These are illustrative bands, not universal specifications. A team chooses frequency, altitude, line spacing and speed according to depth, target size, seabed type and the required resolution.
Side-scan imagery is excellent for finding exposed shapes and shadows, but it is not a depth map. NOAA notes that it is commonly paired with single-beam or multibeam sonar when bathymetric information is needed. Strong returns can also come from rocks, containers, modern debris or seabed outcrops, so an image is a candidate, not an identification.
Bathymetry and buried-object detection
Multibeam sonar
Multibeam systems emit a swath of sound and calculate depth across many points. The resulting bathymetry shows seabed contours, scour, slopes and mounds, and helps place a sonar target in its physical setting. It can reveal whether a suspected wreck lies in a depression, on a ridge or in an area of sediment movement. Site-specific bathymetry also supplies the surface on which a debris map or 3D model can be registered.

Magnetometers
A magnetometer measures changes in Earth’s magnetic field. Iron and other ferrous aircraft components can produce a localized anomaly, whether the material is visible or covered by sediment. NOAA’s general explainer describes magnetometers commonly sampling background magnetism at about one reading per second (1 Hz), with the rate adjustable; that figure is a page-level example from NOAA, not a required setting for every instrument.
Surveyors map the anomaly against the navigation track and compare its amplitude, shape and persistence with sonar and bathymetric evidence. Geological formations, pipelines, anchors and unrelated scrap can all be magnetic. The anomaly’s location and dimensions guide follow-up; they do not establish that an aircraft is present.
Sub-bottom profiling
When sediment may conceal an engine, frame or other component, a sub-bottom profiler sends sound into the seabed and records reflections from buried layers. It is a distinct method from side-scan imaging and is selected when the search objective includes material below the surface. Sediment type and acoustic penetration determine how useful the resulting profile will be.
A step-by-step survey workflow
- Define the objective and area. Set the geographic polygon, expected target size, depth range, seabed conditions, acceptable uncertainty and whether the work is detection, identification, mapping or condition assessment.
- Assemble historical and environmental information. Plot reported positions and likely drift, review bathymetry and currents, and mark hazards, restricted areas and areas where sediment may bury evidence.
- Choose a complementary sensor package. Side-scan sonar may provide efficient imagery; multibeam adds depth and terrain; magnetometry addresses ferrous or buried material; sub-bottom profiling addresses deeper burial. AUVs can carry sensors over large or difficult areas, while an ROV is generally used for targeted inspection.
- Plan navigation and line spacing. Lay out parallel or otherwise appropriate tracks with enough overlap to avoid gaps. Record the vessel, towfish or vehicle position and sensor offsets so every return can be placed on a map.
- Calibrate and run quality checks. Confirm timing, sound-speed assumptions where relevant, heading, altitude, sensor offsets and data logging. Note weather, sea state, visibility and any gaps or degraded lines.
- Process and map the data. Correct navigation and sensor errors, assemble mosaics or point data, mark anomalies and attach uncertainty. Keep the original files so processing decisions remain auditable.
- Rank targets for inspection. Compare acoustic shape, shadow, bathymetry, magnetic response and historical likelihood. A target supported by several independent indicators normally deserves priority over an isolated mark.
- Inspect safely with an ROV or divers. Record the approach, depth, visibility, current and every observation. At deep or hazardous sites, an ROV can collect video and measurements without exposing divers to those conditions.
- Map the site and surrounding debris field. Extend observations beyond the most recognizable component. Record separated engines, wings, landing gear, fragments and any disturbance or burial so relationships among parts are preserved.
- Archive the record and report uncertainty. Store coordinates, imagery, logs, processed products, measurements and photographs with dates, equipment and processing notes. Identify what is confirmed, what is probable and what remains unresolved.
How candidate anomalies are confirmed
Remote sensing narrows the search; it does not automatically identify an aircraft. NOAA describes using sonar and magnetometer maps to assess relationships among wreck fragments, followed by divers or an ROV to confirm artifacts and photograph them. The inspection should test the interpretation rather than merely seek a dramatic image.
An inspector looks for aircraft-specific evidence such as recognizable structures, engines, propellers, cockpit or control components, manufacturing marks and a coherent distribution of fragments. The surrounding seabed matters too: a modern object, geological outcrop or isolated piece of scrap may explain a sensor response without representing a wreck.
ROV operators should record a target’s position, depth, heading, visibility, lighting and camera orientation, and should keep a continuous time reference linking video to navigation. For an initial aircraft assessment, U.S. Navy field guidance specifically includes recording positions at the wing extremities. That creates a repeatable footprint even when visibility prevents a complete view.

Documenting the wreck in place
NOAA states that “Maritime archaeologists now prefer to document underwater sites in situ, or in place, right where they are found on the seabed.” In-place recording preserves the relationships that recovery can destroy: which parts are connected, how far debris traveled, what is buried, and how the site relates to seabed features.
Essential field records
- Mapped positions and coordinate reference system, including the estimated uncertainty.
- Depth, orientation, dimensions and measurements of major components.
- Photographs and video with scale references, camera direction and acquisition time.
- Sketches or digital plans showing the aircraft footprint and separated debris.
- Seabed description, sediment, scour, burial, biological growth and visible disturbance.
- Equipment, operators, settings, calibration information, weather, visibility and current.
- Notes on artifacts that were not moved, sampled or recovered, and the reason for any intervention.
Record the entire debris field, not only the cockpit or the largest recognizable section. Navy guidance recommends investigating surrounding areas to characterize the field and immediate environment. A distribution map can reveal breakup, impact direction, currents, salvage activity or later dispersal.
Photogrammetry: turning images into a map or model
Photogrammetry uses overlapping photographs to calculate the geometry of a site. The output may be a photomosaic, in which images are joined into a scaled map, or a three-dimensional model that represents surfaces and relief. NOAA describes the method as useful for quickly characterizing sites and documenting areas that are difficult to reach.
Useful acquisition requires deliberate overlap, consistent coverage, adequate lighting and a scale reference. Position fixes help anchor the model, while scale bars or measured control points allow dimensions to be checked. The exact overlap, camera distance, lighting and number of images cannot be prescribed universally: water clarity, depth, relief, camera system and the survey objective all change the appropriate settings.
A model is not automatically accurate because it looks realistic. Teams should retain the original photographs, note areas of missing texture or poor visibility, document control points and report the expected scale and uncertainty. Separate models or image sets may be needed for a wide debris-field plan and close detail of a component.
Positioning, interpretation and quality control
Every sensor return and image should be traceable to a position. Depending on the system, that may require combining vessel navigation with towfish layback, vehicle tracking, acoustic positioning or diver/ROV observations. Sensor offsets and timing errors can shift a target relative to the map, so they should be measured and documented rather than silently corrected.

Quality control includes checking for gaps, duplicated lines, navigation jumps, bad altitude, noisy records and incorrect sound-speed or magnetic corrections. Uncertainty belongs on the final map and in the report. A target that cannot be relocated, or whose position is only approximate, should be labeled accordingly.

Interpretation is strongest when independent evidence agrees. A side-scan shadow aligned with a multibeam mound and a magnetic anomaly is more compelling than any one signal alone, but even that combination still requires visual or archaeological assessment before an aircraft identification is asserted.
Legal, safety and heritage responsibilities
Permissions, ownership, protected-status rules and recovery restrictions depend on the wreck’s jurisdiction, nationality, location and circumstances. A general survey method does not grant permission to disturb or remove material. Before fieldwork, establish which maritime, heritage, environmental and safety authorities have jurisdiction and what approvals, reporting and conservation plans they require.
UNESCO’s Annex to the 2001 Convention addresses project design, qualifications, excavation documentation, conservation and site management. U.S. Navy field guidance likewise calls for clear, accurate records of operations and observations. Together, these principles favor qualified teams, a written plan, minimal disturbance and an archive that remains useful after the expedition ends.
Deep water, entanglement, currents, limited visibility, contaminated fuel or ordnance and unstable structures can make direct access dangerous. An ROV, staged inspection and a conservative stand-off distance may be preferable to sending divers into an uncertain site. Safety decisions should be made in the project plan, not improvised after a target is found.

- Treating one image as proof. Require corroboration and inspection; rocks and modern debris can mimic aircraft shapes.
- Using side-scan sonar as a depth map. Add multibeam or another bathymetric method when elevation and seabed shape matter.
- Assuming a magnetic anomaly is a wreck. Compare it with geology, infrastructure, sonar and historical probability.
- Ignoring buried material. Include magnetometry and, where justified, sub-bottom profiling when sediment cover is likely.
- Mapping only the recognizable fuselage. Search and record the surrounding debris field and immediate seabed.
- Collecting photographs without scale or position. Use scale references, overlap, navigation and acquisition logs so images support measurement.
- Overstating precision. Publish uncertainty, gaps and processing limitations with coordinates and models.
- Recovering objects before documenting context. Record the site in place and follow the applicable heritage and conservation plan.
What a defensible final record contains
A complete report should let another qualified team understand how the wreck was found, relocate it and evaluate the interpretation. Include the search objective and polygon; historical and environmental assumptions; vessel, sensor and navigation details; calibration and quality-control notes; processed maps and raw-data references; anomaly logs; ROV or diver observations; photographs and video; photogrammetry products; debris-field plans; measurements; uncertainty; and the legal or management framework used.

Separate confirmed observations from interpretation. For example, “a 2.4-metre magnetic peak at this coordinate” is an observation, while “aircraft engine” is an interpretation that should be supported by imagery or inspection. This distinction protects the archaeological record and makes later reanalysis possible as better data or historical evidence becomes available.
How to choose methods for a new project
Start with the target and environment, not a favorite instrument. A shallow, visible wreck may need high-detail sonar and diver photogrammetry; a deep or hazardous site may require an AUV survey followed by an ROV; a sediment-covered target may justify magnetometry and sub-bottom profiling; and a large search area may prioritize efficient side-scan coverage before detailed mapping.
There is no reliable universal discovery time, success rate or cost figure for underwater aircraft searches. Results depend on the search area, target condition, burial, seabed, weather, equipment, positioning quality, permits and available historical information. Claims that a particular sensor will find every aircraft, or that a search can be completed on a fixed schedule, go beyond the established evidence.

Can side-scan sonar identify an aircraft by itself?
No. It can reveal shapes, returns and shadows that suggest a target, but bathymetry, magnetometry, historical context and ROV or diver inspection may be needed to establish what the anomaly is.
Why use a magnetometer if sonar already covers the seabed?
Magnetometry responds to magnetic material and can detect some ferrous objects beneath sediment, while sonar primarily images acoustic returns from the seabed and exposed features. Their evidence is complementary.
What makes an underwater wreck record archaeologically useful?
Accurate positions, measurements, imagery, uncertainty and a map of the surrounding debris field preserve relationships among parts and the site’s seabed context, preferably without moving material.
Is photogrammetry suitable for every wreck?
It can be valuable, but visibility, lighting, relief, camera system, scale control and positioning determine whether a usable photomosaic or 3D model is possible.
