UI/UX designers can build products—such as interface kits, website templates, and practical guides—that may sell repeatedly after they are created. But “passive income” is shorthand: finding buyers, maintaining files, answering questions, and complying with marketplace and licensing rules still take work. No route guarantees sales, so start with a small product and assess its audience, access requirements, fees, support needs, and rights before investing in a larger catalog.

What “passive income” means for a designer

A reusable digital product can be sold more than once without repeating the original design work for every customer. That is different from effortless income. You may still need to promote the product, respond to customers, fix compatibility issues, and update files as tools and design conventions change. Webflow lists timely customer support among its template-designer expectations; Wix Studio reviews templates for quality and usability; Figma says sellers must respond to buyers and keep files compatible with the latest version.

There is no established typical income or sales volume for these routes. Treat a first product as a demand test, not a forecast: choose a specific user problem, publish a focused offer, and decide what evidence would justify further work.

10 practical ways to earn from UI/UX design

1. Sell UI kits, wireframes, and component libraries

Package interface elements around a recognizable task or audience—for example, a set of onboarding screens or a reusable dashboard library. Figma identifies wireframes, UI kits, asset libraries, educational resources, templates, and design systems as possible Community file types. However, Figma’s current help pages say it is not approving new creators to sell paid files on Community at this time. Check eligibility before building a business plan around paid Community files; consider another marketplace or an independent storefront instead.

2. Build a documented design system

A design system can be a product when it is organized for someone else to adopt: include clearly named components, usage guidance, and licensing terms. Figma lists design systems among its Community file types, but the paid-file approval restriction applies to new sellers. Publishing a free file does not, by itself, establish that it can be resold, and a purchase should not be assumed to include future updates unless the seller’s terms say so.

3. Create website templates

Designers with web-building skills can submit templates to marketplaces such as Webflow or Wix Studio, subject to their current eligibility and review requirements. Webflow advertises a 95% payout per template sale and says it retains 5% to cover payment processing. Its expectations include responsive layouts, sound UX/UI, Webflow experience, and timely customer support. Wix Studio requires Partner Program membership and reviews submissions for UX/UI quality, originality, and usability. Its page says it aims to review submissions within 60 business days; that is a review target, not a guarantee of approval or sales.

4. Sell Canva templates

Canva permits sellers to offer original templates, but the delivery format matters when a template includes Pro Content: it must be distributed as a Canva template link, not as a PDF or another file type. Canva also prohibits selling its content on a standalone basis. Check the current Canva content license for the exact assets and format you plan to use before listing.

5. Publish an ebook or practical guide

Turn a repeatable process into an original publication, such as a guide to usability reviews, design handoff, or portfolio presentation. Canva permits original ebooks and other publications subject to its content-license conditions. For unedited Pro Content images in electronic publications, Canva sets a maximum of 480,000 pixels. Skillshare also lists ebooks and guides as possible downloadable products for eligible sellers.

6. Make educational downloads

Checklists, workbooks, brushes, color palettes, and templates can package expertise into files customers can use at their own pace. Skillshare lists these categories and lets creators set a product price, subject to its rules and fees. A platform’s audience does not guarantee that customers will discover or buy a particular download.

7. Teach a class and reuse its materials

A class can give context to related templates, workbooks, or guides. On Skillshare, digital-product sellers need a teaching account and a live class, so this route is a fit for designers prepared to teach rather than those seeking a standalone product storefront. Skillshare’s digital-product terms, last updated June 26, 2026, list a 10% platform fee plus applicable transaction fees. Payments also depend on Wise eligibility.

8. License original design assets

Original icon sets, illustrations, and other assets may be licensed for reuse. Create the work yourself and read both the marketplace’s terms and the asset license so buyers understand what uses are allowed. Canva says its Free and Pro content cannot be repackaged and sold as standalone stock content; stock assets need to be created from scratch.

9. Create print-on-demand designs

Canva allows original designs on printed products such as posters, mugs, shirts, and stickers under its conditions. Do not simply print Canva content as-is. Review both Canva’s license and the print provider’s terms before listing; a provider may require copyright representations that are not satisfied by having only a content license.

10. Recommend tools through useful content

If you already publish tutorials or comparisons, recommendations can be part of genuinely helpful content. Do not assume a tool has an available affiliate program, that you are eligible, or that a commission is guaranteed. Confirm current terms and disclose the relationship before publishing a referral recommendation.

How to choose a route before you build

Compare the practical obligations, not just the product idea. These examples illustrate meaningful differences in access, fees, and review:

Route or platform example Access and review Fees or payout stated Ongoing considerations
Paid Figma Community files Figma says it is not approving new creators to sell paid files at this time. Not stated in the cited Figma guidance. Seller responses and compatibility with the latest version are expected.
Webflow templates Templates are subject to Webflow’s expectations for responsiveness, UX/UI, platform experience, and support. Webflow advertises a 95% payout per sale and says it keeps 5% for payment processing. Support and template upkeep remain part of the work.
Wix Studio templates Partner Program membership is required; submissions are reviewed for UX/UI quality, originality, and usability. The page gives a 60-business-day review aim. Not stated in the cited current page. A separate 100%-of-profits offer ended June 30, 2025. Review timing is an aim, not an approval or sales promise.
Skillshare digital products A teaching account and live class are required; Wise eligibility applies to payments. 10% platform fee plus applicable transaction fees, according to terms last updated June 26, 2026. Platform rules and audience discovery affect the route.

For any other route, ask the same questions before committing:

  • Is this a one-time downloadable file, a marketplace template, a class, or an ongoing service?
  • How will customers find it: through marketplace discovery, an audience you already reach, or promotion you must build?
  • What approval, seller eligibility, geographic payment, or account requirements apply?
  • Who handles customer questions, software compatibility, and updates—and what does the listing promise?
  • Does the license permit your source assets, delivery format, and intended buyer use?

Keep licensing and delivery in the product plan

Rights are not a detail to sort out after designing. For templates and publications containing third-party content, verify that the license permits the product type and delivery method. Canva’s rules, for example, distinguish template links from PDFs when Pro Content is included, prohibit standalone resale of Canva content, and set conditions for print products and electronic publications. For asset licensing, use original work and make the allowed uses clear. Platform and provider terms can change, so check the live rules when you list or update a product.

A low-risk way to start

  1. Choose one specific problem. Define who needs the product and what task it helps them complete.
  2. Pick a format that matches your strengths. A component library, template, guide, or class each brings different publishing and support obligations.
  3. Check access and terms first. Confirm that you can sell through the intended platform, understand its fees, and have rights to every included asset.
  4. Make a focused first version. Include clear instructions, organized files, and an explicit statement of what buyers receive and whether updates are included.
  5. Test interest before expanding. Use customer questions and actual buyer response to decide whether to improve the product or make another one; do not treat projected earnings as established demand.
