U.S. military action in the Middle East does not automatically make gasoline more expensive. Prices rise when an operation, retaliation, sanction, or threat changes expectations about oil production, exports, shipping routes, insurance costs, or refined-fuel supplies. Traders can bid up global crude benchmarks before a single barrel is lost; a physical disruption can add a larger and longer-lasting shock. U.S. drivers feel the effect through internationally traded crude and fuels, refinery margins, inventories, taxes, and local supply conditions—not simply through the small share of U.S. oil that travels directly through the Strait of Hormuz.
The result can range from a brief futures-market jump to a sustained increase in wholesale and retail fuel prices. The size, speed, and geographic spread depend on what was disrupted, how long it lasts, what alternative supplies are available, and whether traders expect a quick restoration or a prolonged conflict.
What military action changes in the oil market
Oil prices are set in a global market in which physical barrels, shipping capacity, inventories, refinery demand, and expectations interact. A military event can affect several of those variables at once.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRisk can move prices before supply is lost
An attack or escalation may lead traders to price in possible damage to production facilities, shut-in wells, export restrictions, tanker attacks, higher insurance premiums, or a closure of a strategic waterway. That is an expectations effect: the market is valuing the probability and potential cost of future disruption, not reporting a confirmed shortage today.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) described this mechanism in its review of the second quarter of 2026. Brent front-month futures moved between $72 per barrel on June 26 and $118 on April 29 as markets responded to disrupted flows, production shut-ins, uncertainty over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ceasefires, anticipated tanker movement, and renewed strikes. The average daily Brent-price swing was about $4 per barrel in April and May 2026, compared with about $1 during the same months of 2025.
Physical losses can tighten the balance
If production is shut in, a terminal is damaged, exports are restricted, or tankers cannot safely load and unload, the amount of oil available to buyers can fall. A sustained loss matters most when spare production, inventories, alternative routes, and demand reductions cannot replace it quickly. A brief interruption may create a sharp price move that fades as shipments resume; a prolonged outage can affect contracts, refinery purchasing, and consumer prices for months.
Transport risk has a price of its own
Even when oil is still produced, a dangerous route can raise freight, insurance, security, and rerouting costs. Buyers may compete for fewer available tankers or longer routes. Those costs can be incorporated into crude and product prices without a complete blockade.

Hormuz is a major chokepoint between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. EIA estimates that 20.9 million barrels per day crossed the strait in the first half of 2025. That was about 20% of global petroleum-liquids consumption and roughly one-quarter of maritime oil trade, based on tanker-tracking estimates.
Some flows can bypass the strait, but the alternatives are limited. EIA estimated that Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline and the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi pipeline together could provide about 4.7 million barrels per day of capacity around the chokepoint. This is potential bypass capacity, not a guarantee that all of it is immediately available, unused, or suitable for every stranded cargo. It is also far below normal Hormuz traffic.

The direct U.S. flow is much smaller than the total. In the first half of 2025, about 0.4 million barrels per day of crude and condensate from Persian Gulf countries transited Hormuz to the United States. That represented around 7% of U.S. crude-oil and condensate imports and about 2% of U.S. petroleum-liquids consumption.
Those percentages do not cap the possible U.S. price effect. Oil is traded internationally. If a disruption makes the global benchmark more expensive, U.S. refiners and importers generally face that benchmark even when a particular refinery does not buy Hormuz cargoes. Internationally traded gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel can also be redirected toward regions offering the highest prices, changing U.S. availability and wholesale costs.

How a crude-price move reaches a gas station
Crude oil is a major component of gasoline and diesel prices, but it is not the only one. EIA identifies four broad components of the U.S. retail gasoline price:
- Crude oil: the cost of the feedstock, usually influenced by global benchmarks.
- Refining: the cost and margin of turning crude into gasoline or other products.
- Distribution and marketing: transportation, storage, wholesale handling, and station operations.
- Taxes: federal, state, and sometimes local charges that do not move with the crude market.
Refinery margins can amplify or mute the effect
Refineries determine how much gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel can be produced from available crude. Outages, seasonal maintenance, product specifications, imports, exports, inventories, and consumer demand can make finished fuels scarce even when crude supply is adequate.
In its September 4, 2026 market analysis, EIA said tight global gasoline supplies had lifted refinery margins. The New York Harbor gasoline crack spread—a wholesale indicator comparing gasoline value with crude input—had averaged about $1 per gallon above its 2025 level since May. That figure is not a one-for-one increase in what motorists pay; it measures a refinery-market relationship. It shows how product tightness can add pressure independently of the crude benchmark.

Retail prices do not all adjust at the same speed
Spot and wholesale prices can change within hours, while a station may still be selling fuel purchased under an earlier contract. EIA’s pump-price methodology notes that component estimates can vary during this adjustment cycle. Taxes remain fixed or change on their own schedules, and station competition, rent, delivery distance, and local demand produce different prices within the same city.

A refinery outage or pipeline constraint can make one region more expensive while another sees little change. Seasonal gasoline formulations and local environmental rules can create additional regional differences.
Three disruption scenarios
The following framework is more useful than assigning one automatic price increase to “military action.” Each scenario depends on its duration, the credibility of the threat, and the market’s available offsets.
| Scenario | Physical and transport conditions | Likely market path | What could limit the effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited strike or short confrontation | No confirmed loss of major production; tanker traffic continues, though risk premiums may rise. | Crude futures and refined-product prices may jump on fear, then retreat if facilities and routes remain intact. | Rapid ceasefire, normal shipping, inventories, spare capacity, and reduced demand. |
| Prolonged regional conflict | Repeated attacks, production shut-ins, export restrictions, or sustained insurance and freight increases. | Higher and more volatile benchmarks; refinery buyers may pay more for feedstock and products. | Bypass pipelines, other producers’ spare capacity, stock releases, rerouting, and demand destruction. |
| Shipping or production disruption | A chokepoint closes or a major facility loses output for an uncertain period. | Physical shortages and risk premiums can reinforce one another; product prices may rise faster where inventories are low. | Partial bypass capacity, alternative suppliers, stored inventories, restored tanker traffic, and a shorter-than-feared outage. |
What recent events show about duration and reversals
A conflict-related spike does not necessarily become a permanent increase. The Congressional Research Service reported that oil prices rose approximately $5 per barrel after the initial June 2025 Israel-Iran attacks and the subsequent U.S. strike. Prices later returned to pre-attack levels or lower after the conflict ended. CRS cautioned that tensions, tariffs, and other market uncertainties were also influencing prices, so the episode does not isolate the strike’s precise contribution.
The 2026 Hormuz experience likewise shows why expectations matter. EIA linked price movements to uncertainty about when the strait would reopen, production shut-ins, ceasefires, anticipated resumed tanker traffic, and later renewed strikes. A market can therefore rally on the possibility of a closure, fall when reopening appears likely, and rise again if the expected restoration is delayed.

Why the U.S. can be affected despite limited direct Hormuz imports
It is tempting to compare the 2% share of U.S. petroleum-liquids consumption transiting Hormuz with a possible 2% price effect. That arithmetic is misleading. The statistic describes direct physical flows, not the pricing system.
U.S. refiners buy crude in a global market. If Asian or European buyers lose Gulf cargoes, they may bid for Atlantic Basin barrels that otherwise would have been available elsewhere. U.S. exporters may send more products abroad when overseas prices rise, tightening domestic wholesale supply. Futures contracts also incorporate expectations about future global balances. These channels can transmit a foreign disruption to U.S. prices even when the United States receives little of the affected oil.
Transmission is not unlimited. The United States has domestic production, imports from multiple regions, inventories, alternative transportation routes, and the ability to reduce demand when prices rise. Those buffers can soften or delay the retail effect, particularly when a disruption is brief.
How to interpret a sudden jump in fuel prices

- Check the physical event: Was production shut in, a refinery damaged, a terminal closed, or a tanker route interrupted? A threat without a confirmed outage can still move prices, but the expected duration matters.
- Watch the benchmark and its volatility: A sharp move in Brent or another benchmark indicates global repricing. Large intraday swings signal uncertainty, not necessarily a lasting shortage.
- Separate crude from products: Gasoline, diesel, and jet-fuel prices can diverge from crude when refinery margins, inventories, imports, or exports change.
- Look for offsets: Bypass pipelines, alternative producers, stock releases, rerouted tankers, and demand reductions can reduce the eventual loss.
- Compare regions: Different taxes, fuel specifications, refinery access, pipelines, weather, and retail competition explain why one state or metro area may move faster than another.
- Allow for a lag: Retail prices may catch up to wholesale changes over several days, while an initial risk premium may disappear before it reaches every station.
What forecasts can—and cannot—tell you
Forecasts during an active conflict are conditional scenarios, not promises. In an April 7, 2026 EIA press release about a Strait of Hormuz closure, Administrator Tristan Abbey said the agency’s petroleum forecast depended on three unresolved variables: the assumed duration of the closure, the amount of production forced to shut in, and what reopening would look like. He said full restoration of flows would take months under the agency’s modeled assumptions and that fuel prices would continue rising until those variables resolved.

“Our petroleum forecasts are highly contingent on the interaction of three variables,” EIA Administrator Tristan Abbey said on April 7, 2026. “First, to even run our model we have to make an assumption about the duration of the Strait of Hormuz closure. Second, we know that the closure is forcing production to shut in, but we can only estimate these outages. Third, just as we had never before seen the strait close, we’ve never seen it reopen. What exactly that looks like remains to be seen. Full restoration of flows will take months. Our modeling indicates that fuel prices will continue to rise until these variables resolve.”
That statement describes the assumptions of an April 2026 forecast, not a timeless rule or a current prediction. The practical lesson is to ask which assumptions changed: Is shipping resuming? Are shut-in fields restarting? Are inventories falling? Are refineries operating normally? Has the conflict widened or de-escalated?
What this means for households and businesses
Consumers should expect uneven timing rather than a guaranteed nationwide price change. A brief headline-driven rally may fade before it materially changes a local station’s price. A confirmed supply loss combined with low inventories and high refinery margins is more likely to produce a persistent increase.
Businesses that depend on fuel should distinguish a benchmark move from their actual delivered cost. Freight contracts, regional wholesale differentials, taxes, fuel surcharges, and hedging arrangements can make a company’s exposure different from the national average. Households can compare nearby stations and plan around known travel needs, but no single pump-price number can be inferred from a military announcement alone.
