Yes—on a compatible, unlocked dual-SIM phone, you can usually install a travel eSIM for mobile data abroad while keeping your regular SIM or home eSIM available for your usual number. Set the travel line as the data line, then decide whether the home line should remain enabled for carrier calls and SMS. The arrangement does not make home-line roaming free: your carrier, destination, plan and actual use determine charges.
What happens when you add a travel eSIM?
A SIM identifies your subscription to a mobile network. An eSIM performs the same job digitally, so you download a carrier plan instead of inserting a plastic card. Apple defines it as “a digital SIM that allows you to use a mobile plan from your network provider without having to use a physical nano-SIM.”
When a phone supports dual-SIM operation, the home SIM and travel eSIM are separate lines. You are not moving your home number to the travel provider. Instead, the phone can register both plans and assign different jobs to each one:

- Mobile data: the line used for web browsing, maps, email and app traffic.
- Calls: a selected default line, or a line chosen for an individual contact or call.
- Messages: a selected default line for SMS and, where supported, internet messaging tied to that number or account.
Most phones use one cellular data network at a time even when two lines are active. The exact combination that can remain registered depends on the phone model, operating-system version, regional variant and carrier. Apple documents physical-SIM-plus-eSIM support on compatible iPhones and dual-eSIM support on iPhone 13 and later. Android manufacturers expose similar controls, but menus and simultaneous-use behavior vary by device and software version.

Can I use a travel eSIM and keep my regular SIM?
Usually, yes, if all of these conditions are met:
- The phone has eSIM capability and supports simultaneous use of your particular physical-SIM/eSIM or eSIM/eSIM combination.
- The phone is unlocked when the two plans come from different providers. A carrier-locked phone may reject the travel plan even if its hardware supports eSIM.
- Your home carrier and the travel provider support the destination network and the required form of dual-SIM service.
- The travel plan is valid for the country or countries you will visit and has not expired before you arrive.
Check the model number and regional specification rather than relying on a phone family name. Some regional editions omit eSIM or offer different SIM combinations. Also check whether your home account permits international registration; a line can be technically active but unable to connect abroad.
Check the travel plan before installing it
“eSIM” describes how a plan is delivered, not what the plan includes. Many travel offers are data-only. A data-only plan normally provides internet access but no conventional local phone number and no carrier voice or SMS service. Other plans may include a number or voice and text allowances. Read the plan’s inclusions instead of assuming every eSIM supports calls and texts.
- Coverage: confirm every destination, including countries where you will only make a connection.
- Network access: check supported networks, expected 4G/5G availability and any speed policy.
- Allowance and validity: note the data amount, start trigger, expiration date and whether validity begins at installation or first connection.
- Hotspot: verify tethering is permitted if you plan to connect a laptop or another phone.
- Voice and SMS: look for a local number and explicit incoming/outgoing allowances; “data” alone does not provide carrier calling.
- Activation requirements: some plans need an app, QR code, identity check or manual access-point settings.
Keep the installation email or QR code accessible offline. Do not delete the home line while adding the travel line; removing a line can require a carrier reissue to restore it.
Set up an iPhone
Apple’s labels vary slightly by country and iOS version. On supported iPhones, the following sequence keeps the home number available while directing ordinary data to the travel plan.

- Check eligibility. Open Settings > General > About and confirm an EID is listed. Confirm the phone is unlocked if the plans use different providers.
- Install the travel plan. Use the provider’s QR code or activation link, then follow Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions) to add an eSIM. Label the lines “Home” and “Travel” immediately so later choices are unambiguous.
- Choose data. Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and select Travel. This makes the travel line the normal route for app and browser data.
- Control switching. If you want to prevent the phone from moving data to the home plan when the travel line is unavailable, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching. Availability and wording can differ by iOS release.
- Choose call and message defaults. In Settings > Cellular, set the default voice line and default number for iMessage and FaceTime as needed. You can also choose a line when calling a contact.
- Decide whether the home line stays on. Leave the home line enabled only after checking its roaming terms. Turning it on can preserve carrier calls and SMS but may create roaming charges.
- Review roaming per line. Data-roaming controls are associated with individual lines on supported iPhones. Follow the travel plan’s activation instructions for the Travel line and your home carrier’s instructions for the Home line; there is no universal on/off rule that fits every plan.
Apple’s international travel guidance describes a setup that keeps both lines on and uses the travel eSIM for data, while warning that the home line may still incur roaming fees. In some regions, iOS 26 offers a travel-only or travel-plus-current-line flow. The labels, automatic restoration behavior and availability of that flow depend on region and software version, so confirm the final line state yourself.
Set up a Pixel or Galaxy phone
Google Pixel
On supported Pixel models, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Select the travel line and set it as the preferred SIM for mobile data. The same screen lets you choose defaults for calls and SMS. Google notes that available choices vary by Pixel model and Android version.
Pixel phones have a specific behavior worth planning for: during a phone call, all mobile data goes through the SIM making that call. If the home line handles a call while the travel line is your normal data line, app data during that call may therefore use the home line’s connection or stop, depending on coverage and settings. Treat this as a Pixel-specific caveat, not a rule for every Android phone.
Samsung Galaxy
On supported Galaxy phones, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Activate both lines, assign clear names, then choose the primary SIM for calls, messages and mobile data. Samsung’s available options differ by model, Android version and region. If a menu does not show an expected choice, check the phone’s current manual and carrier support rather than assuming the eSIM is defective.

What happens to calls and texts?
Carrier calls and SMS on your regular number
Keeping the home line enabled can make its number reachable for ordinary calls and SMS when your carrier supports roaming in the country you are visiting. It can also expose you to fees. Incoming calls, outgoing calls, voicemail retrieval, incoming SMS and sent SMS may each have different prices or allowances. Never assume that receiving a text is free or that an unanswered call has no cost; check the carrier’s current destination-specific terms.
Selecting the Travel line for data does not make every Home-line activity use the travel plan. The home line may still register on a partner network, receive a call or message, download voicemail or perform carrier signaling. Those events are governed by the home account, not by the travel eSIM’s data allowance.
Internet messaging and calling
Services such as iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages chat features, WhatsApp and Signal use Wi-Fi or mobile data. Apple says FaceTime and iMessage can continue through the home line when you use only a travel eSIM for data. That is different from a carrier SMS or a normal cellular call.

Wi-Fi calling over travel data
Wi-Fi calling can sometimes route your home number through an internet connection, but support is carrier-, device- and configuration-dependent. The available sources do not establish universal support over a travel eSIM’s data connection. Ask your home carrier whether this arrangement is supported and test it before relying on it for important calls.
How to avoid unexpected roaming charges
- Check the home plan first. Look up international roaming for the exact destination. Determine whether a travel pass, included allowance or separate per-use rates apply to data, incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and voicemail.
- Make Travel the data line. This reduces the chance that ordinary app traffic uses the home allowance, but it is not a guarantee that the home line will incur no charges.
- Disable automatic data switching when appropriate. On iPhone, Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > Allow Cellular Data Switching can permit the other plan to provide data when availability changes. Turn it off if maintaining a strict data-line boundary is more important than uninterrupted connectivity.
- Manage each line independently. Follow the travel plan’s roaming instruction for the Travel line and your carrier’s instruction for the Home line. Turning off data roaming does not necessarily block voice, SMS, voicemail or all network registration.
- Control background use. Disable automatic downloads, cloud backups and high-volume streaming until you have confirmed which line is supplying data. This protects the travel allowance and makes unexpected usage easier to identify.
- Monitor the carrier account. Use the carrier’s app or alerts where available, especially after the first connection in a new country.
If banking or account verification depends on SMS, arrange a backup method before leaving. A code may fail to arrive because the home line cannot roam, the account blocks international delivery or the message is billed differently than expected.
Which arrangement should you choose?

Compare the choices on six questions: how important the home number is, the total cost for data and voice/SMS, whether the travel plan is data-only, destination network quality, validity period and how easily you can recover if activation fails.
Troubleshooting common failures
The travel eSIM installs but has no service
- Confirm the plan’s validity has started and the destination is covered.
- Check that the Travel line is enabled and selected for data.
- Follow the provider’s instructions for data roaming or access-point settings on that line.
- Toggle airplane mode, restart the phone and allow a few minutes for network registration.
- If manual network selection is offered, try a network listed by the travel provider.
- Contact the travel provider with the device model, country and activation status; do not delete the eSIM before support advises you.
Data is being charged to the home plan
Recheck the selected data line and automatic switching setting. On iPhone, verify Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data shows Travel and that Allow Cellular Data Switching is off if you need a hard boundary. On Android, recheck the SIM Manager or SIM preferences screen. Then inspect which apps were active and ask the home carrier whether the charge was data, a call, SMS or voicemail; changing the data line cannot reverse a completed roaming event.

Texts to the home number do not arrive
Confirm that the Home line is enabled, has network registration and is permitted to roam in that country. Check whether the sender used SMS or an internet messaging service. If the message is a bank code, use the backup verification method you arranged rather than repeatedly requesting codes that may be delayed or billed.
Calls use the wrong line
Set the default voice line in the phone’s Cellular, SIM or SIM Manager settings, then choose the line explicitly on the call screen when necessary. A contact may retain its own preferred line, so inspect that contact’s settings. A data-only travel eSIM cannot become a carrier voice line merely by selecting it for data.
Checklist before departure and after return
Before departure
- Confirm eSIM, dual-SIM and unlock support for the exact phone model and region.
- Verify destination coverage, allowance, validity, hotspot policy and voice/SMS features.
- Label Home and Travel lines and record the home carrier’s roaming prices.
- Set Travel as data, choose call and message defaults, and review switching and roaming controls.
- Test messaging, account access and the intended configuration while you still have support from both providers.
After returning
- Set the Home line as the data line and confirm it is enabled.
- Turn off or remove the Travel line only when its validity and any needed records have ended.
- Restore your normal call and message defaults and review roaming settings.
- Check the carrier account for delayed roaming charges.
Some regions and iOS 26 configurations may restore the home line automatically, but verify the settings yourself instead of relying on automation.
