A travel eSIM is a digital mobile plan installed on a compatible phone, but the eSIM technology itself does not provide a phone number. The plan may be data-only, or it may include a local number, ordinary cellular calls and SMS. You must check the exact destination plan. Vodafone’s UK Travel eSIM, for example, is explicitly data-only and does not include a UK number for standard calls or SMS.
A compatible Dual SIM phone can often use the travel eSIM for mobile data while keeping your usual line available. That arrangement depends on device and carrier support, and leaving the home line active can still trigger roaming charges.
What a travel eSIM actually is
An eSIM is an embedded, digital SIM. Apple defines it as “a digital SIM that allows you to use a mobile plan from your network provider without having to use a physical nano-SIM.” Instead of inserting a plastic card, you add a carrier plan to the phone’s built-in SIM hardware and select how the line should be used.

“Travel” describes the plan’s intended use, not a special kind of SIM technology. A travel eSIM may be sold by a mobile carrier in the destination country or by a travel-service provider. The plan can contain data, voice, SMS, a local number, or a combination of those services.

That distinction matters because two plans that are both advertised as travel eSIMs can have very different capabilities. The word eSIM tells you how the plan is installed; it does not tell you whether the plan includes a telephone number.
Does every travel eSIM include a phone number?
No. Many travel eSIMs are data-only. A data-only plan gives the phone an internet connection over the destination network but does not assign a number for ordinary carrier calls or SMS.
Vodafone’s UK Travel eSIM is a documented example. Its description says the plan is “data-only, meaning it does not include a UK phone number for making or receiving calls and SMS messages.” That statement applies to that specific UK offer; it is not evidence that every Vodafone plan, UK plan or travel eSIM has the same terms.

Availability can differ by destination, plan edition and provider. Read the plan’s terms for the country you are visiting and look for separate statements about:
- whether a local phone number is assigned;
- incoming and outgoing standard cellular calls;
- incoming and outgoing SMS;
- data allowance and validity period; and
- any restrictions on calls, texts or verification messages.
If the description only promises data, do not assume that a number or cellular voice is included.
How the eSIM connects your phone
After you purchase a plan, the provider supplies an activation method, commonly an in-app flow or a QR-code installation process. The compatible phone downloads the carrier profile and stores it in the device’s eSIM hardware. Once the plan is active and the phone connects to a supported network, apps can use that line’s mobile data.

The eSIM profile and the service bundle are separate concepts. The profile enables the device to authenticate to the network; the plan determines what the account is allowed to use. A profile can therefore provide data without providing a number for voice or SMS.
On a Dual SIM phone, the travel profile can coexist with a physical SIM or another eSIM profile. The phone then has two lines available, subject to the handset’s SIM limitations and the carriers’ support. Apple notes that an iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time, so you choose which line supplies mobile data even when both lines are enabled.
What happens to your usual number?
On a supported Dual SIM device, you can generally keep your home line available while selecting the travel eSIM for data. This allows the phone to retain the number that contacts at home already know, while the travel plan supplies connectivity abroad.
Keeping the home line enabled does not automatically make it free. Apple’s travel guidance warns that using both lines can still result in roaming fees from the home provider. The home line may register on a foreign network for calls, texts or other carrier activity even if the travel eSIM is selected for data.
Before departure, check the home carrier’s roaming terms and the phone’s line settings. Decide whether you need the home line available for incoming calls or SMS, and understand what those services cost. If avoiding roaming charges is the priority, disabling the home line may be safer, but you would then lose access to that line until it is re-enabled.
Data-only service versus a normal mobile line

The table separates carrier services from internet services. A data connection can support an app call or message, but that does not turn the eSIM into a conventional telephone line.

How calls and messages work on a data-only eSIM
Internet-based apps
Messaging and calling apps can communicate over the travel eSIM’s data connection. The app’s account, contact method and internet service determine how the call or message works. Recipients may see an app identity, an account identifier or an existing number associated with that service rather than a new local cellular number.
Ordinary cellular calls
A standard dialer call normally requires a line with voice service and a number. If the travel plan is data-only, dialing from that plan will not provide ordinary carrier calling. You may still be able to place a call through an internet app while connected to the eSIM’s data.
SMS and verification codes
Standard SMS requires SMS service on a carrier line. A data-only plan cannot be assumed to receive one-time codes or other texts sent to a local mobile number. If a trip depends on SMS verification, confirm in advance which line will receive the code and whether the provider supports incoming SMS.
What you should check before buying
- Destination coverage: Confirm that the plan lists every country or network you will use. A plan covering one country may not cover a neighboring destination.
- Data allowance and validity: Check the amount of data, when the validity period starts and when it expires.
- Number inclusion: Look for an explicit statement that a local number is supplied. Do not infer this from the word “eSIM.”
- Voice and SMS: Verify whether ordinary incoming and outgoing calls and texts are included, excluded or charged separately.
- Device compatibility: The phone must support eSIM and the required Dual SIM arrangement. Carrier support also matters.
- Home-line costs: Determine what happens if your usual line remains enabled abroad, including roaming charges for calls, texts or carrier activity.
Save the plan description and activation instructions before travelling. Features can be different between plans for the same provider, and terms may change by destination.
Installing and selecting a travel eSIM
The exact labels vary by phone and operating-system version, but the process follows the same decisions:
- Confirm compatibility. Check that the handset supports eSIM and that the relevant carrier permits the intended line arrangement.
- Install the plan. Use the provider’s supplied activation method while connected to the internet. Follow the phone’s prompts to add the cellular plan.
- Label the lines. Give the home and travel plans clear names so you can identify them when choosing data, calls or messages.
- Select the travel line for data. Apple’s guidance describes choosing the travel eSIM as the data line while retaining the current line.
- Choose default calling and messaging behavior. If both lines support those services, select which line should be used by default, or choose each time when the phone offers that option.
- Review roaming settings. Check the home line’s roaming options and the travel line’s data settings before using the phone abroad.
- Test the connection. After the plan is active in the destination, verify mobile data and, if promised, make a test call or send a test SMS.
Installing a plan does not prove that it is active in the destination. Network registration, the plan’s start date and the provider’s coverage all affect when service begins.

Using both lines without unexpected charges
Dual SIM is useful because it separates the line that supplies data from the line that owns your usual number. However, the phone can still perform carrier actions through the home line. Apple specifically cautions that using both lines may produce roaming fees.

Then review whether the home line is allowed to use data switching, receive calls or send SMS while abroad. The exact controls differ by device. If the home carrier charges for incoming calls or roaming registration, leaving the line active may cost money even when no deliberate call is made.
For a trip where the home number is needed only for occasional authentication, ask the carrier whether receiving SMS abroad is covered. If the number is not needed, disabling that line reduces the chance of roaming activity but also makes it unavailable until restored.

“eSIM” means “local number”
It does not. eSIM refers to the embedded SIM format. Number assignment and voice or SMS permissions come from the purchased plan.
Data means SMS
It does not. Internet data can carry app messages, while SMS is a separate carrier service. A data-only plan may have no SMS capability.
A second line replaces the original line
Not necessarily. On a supported Dual SIM phone, both lines can remain installed, and you choose which one handles data or other services.

Turning on the travel line eliminates roaming risk
It does not. The home line can still incur roaming fees if it remains active. Review the home carrier’s terms and the device settings.
Troubleshooting when the travel eSIM does not work
The phone shows no mobile data
- Confirm that the travel plan is installed and enabled.
- Check that the travel line, rather than the home line, is selected for cellular data.
- Verify that the destination is covered and that the plan is within its validity period.
- Review the provider’s activation instructions and the phone’s carrier settings.
Calls fail but data works
This often indicates that the plan is data-only, not that the installation failed. Recheck the plan description for a local number and voice inclusion. If voice is not included, use an internet calling app or another line with voice service.
SMS verification does not arrive
Determine which number the sender is using. A data-only travel eSIM cannot be assumed to receive standard SMS. If the code is being sent to your home number, check whether that line is enabled and whether your home carrier permits SMS reception abroad.

Review the carrier’s roaming terms and the phone’s Dual SIM settings. The travel eSIM may be handling data while the home line still registers for calls, messages or network service.
When a local number is essential
Choose a plan that explicitly supplies a local number if you need to call businesses through the ordinary dialer, receive local SMS, use number-based verification or present a destination-country number to contacts. Confirm both the number’s country and the included voice and SMS allowances; a plan can provide a number while imposing separate limits or charges.
If your needs are limited to maps, email, web access and app-based communication, a data-only plan may be sufficient. The decision depends on the services you need, not on whether the SIM is physical or embedded.
A practical decision checklist
- Need only internet access? A data-only travel eSIM may meet the requirement.
- Need your existing number? Use a supported Dual SIM setup and check the home carrier’s roaming costs.
- Need a destination number? Buy a plan that explicitly states that it assigns one.
- Need ordinary calls or SMS? Confirm those services in the plan terms, separately from data.
- Need verification texts? Identify which line receives them and test that arrangement before relying on it.
- Travelling across several countries? Verify coverage for each destination rather than assuming one-country terms apply everywhere.
The bottom line for travellers
A travel eSIM is a convenient way to install a mobile plan without a physical SIM, but it is not automatically a telephone number or a voice service. Many plans are data-only; Vodafone’s UK Travel eSIM is one documented example that excludes a UK number, standard calls and SMS. Data-only service can still power internet apps. On a compatible Dual SIM phone, you may keep your usual line while routing data through the travel eSIM, but the home carrier may still charge roaming fees. Check the exact plan’s number, voice, SMS, coverage and validity terms before activation.
