Travel apps can learn where you are through several independent channels: precise or approximate device location, an area inferred from your IP address, trip coordinates supplied by a driver or transport service, and searches or bookings tied to your account. Turning off one phone permission changes only one of those channels. To reduce exposure, review device permissions first, then audit each account’s history, connected services, personalization choices, retention and deletion controls.
The steps below explain what the major data paths reveal, what Android and common travel-account controls actually do, and where privacy limits remain even after you disable location access.
What “location data” means in a travel app
“Location” is not a single feed. An app can combine multiple signals, each governed by a different setting or policy. The same booking can therefore remain associated with a place even after you deny the app access to your phone’s GPS.
| Data path | What it can reveal | Main control | What the control does not cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Precise device location | GPS-level coordinates, sometimes supplemented by nearby Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signals | The operating system’s location permission and precise/approximate choice | Location already stored on the service, IP-derived area, or coordinates supplied by another participant in a trip |
| Approximate device location | A broader area rather than an exact point | Choose approximate instead of precise when the operating system offers that option | Account searches, bookings, IP information and trip records collected elsewhere |
| IP-derived general area | A rough geographic area associated with your internet connection | Network configuration, including a VPN, can change the apparent IP area | It does not revoke GPS permission or erase account history |
| Trip or vehicle geolocation | Pickup, drop-off, route, start and stop times recorded by a driver, vehicle or transport system | Usually controlled by the service’s trip and account policies, not just the rider’s phone permission | Disabling app location may not remove the trip record |
| Search and booking history | Places searched, hotels or flights viewed, reservations, preferences and interactions | Account history, personalization, connected-service and deletion controls | Changing a phone permission does not automatically delete historical activity |
Google describes both precise device location and a general area inferred from an IP address. Device and app permissions govern the first pathway; an IP address can still provide a rough area when GPS access is off. That distinction is why a single “Location” switch cannot make every travel activity anonymous.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
What booking platforms collect and why they share it
A travel service normally processes more than coordinates. Expedia Group says it collects information supplied by customers, data generated automatically by app and website technologies such as cookies, and information from affiliates, business partners and other third parties. Its stated uses include completing travel reservations, communicating with customers and providers, supporting loyalty programs, market research and analytics, and complying with law. The Expedia Group privacy statement referenced here was last updated May 6, 2026.
When a user connects an account to a third-party tool, Expedia Group says the connected service may receive travel searches, preferences, account-related information, booking links and technical data. Connecting a calendar, assistant, loyalty account or other tool can therefore create an additional sharing route that is separate from phone location permission.
Airbnb’s 2026 privacy policy lists precise or approximate location obtained from an IP address, device GPS or information a user provides. It says location may be collected while the app is not in use when the user enables that behavior through settings or permissions. The same policy describes searches, bookings, pages and services used, device and advertising identifiers, and information received through third-party connections such as social sign-in.

These disclosures describe stated practices, not a live technical audit of every app version. Collection and sharing can vary by operating system, release, account choice and region. Treat the policy and the in-app controls as the service’s declared behavior, then verify the settings on your own device.
Why one permission switch cannot stop all sharing
A phone permission answers a narrow question: may this app read the device’s location through the operating system? It does not answer whether the company already has a booking, whether a website can estimate an area from your IP address, or whether another actor in a trip is transmitting coordinates.
Uber illustrates the distinction. Its rider controls can allow location while using the app, request it once or ask each time, or disable access, depending on the platform. If app location is disabled, Uber says a rider can still use the app by entering pickup and drop-off locations manually. However, Uber also says location recorded by the driver during the trip can remain linked to the rider’s account. Manual entry changes how the ride is requested; it does not promise that the trip itself is untracked.

Uber further states that, in some cities, governments or transportation authorities receive order start, stop and route information based on vehicle geolocation and timestamps. It says riders are informed before trips where this applies and notes that the data could be identifiable with effort. That is a service-side disclosure, not something a rider can prevent solely by changing a phone toggle.
Step-by-step: reduce location and booking-data exposure
1. Make an inventory before changing settings
List every travel, ride-hailing, airline, hotel, map, rewards and itinerary app on the phone. Include apps used only through a browser, because an account can retain searches and reservations even when the app is uninstalled. For each service, note whether you need live navigation, automatic pickup detection, background alerts or only occasional booking. This determines whether foreground access is sufficient.
2. Review each app’s operating-system permission
- Open the phone’s Settings and find the Location or App-permissions screen; labels vary by device and Android version.
- Open each travel app’s location entry and check whether access is disabled, allowed only while using the app, allowed all the time, or requested each time.
- Prefer while using when background location is not necessary. Use ask every time or a one-time permission for occasional searches.
- Where the operating system offers a precise/approximate control, choose approximate for apps that do not need an exact pickup point.
- Reopen the app and test the functions you actually use. A ride-hailing app may require a manually entered pickup point after location is disabled; a map-based feature may stop working altogether.
Android documents four broad permission choices—allow all the time, allow only while using, ask every time and disabled—plus a separate precise-versus-approximate setting. The exact labels and availability vary by device and Android release. On another operating system, use the equivalent per-app controls rather than assuming the Android labels appear unchanged.
3. Use manual location entry when it is a workable trade-off
For services that support it, type the pickup, drop-off, hotel, airport or destination instead of granting continuous location access. Uber explicitly supports manual pickup and drop-off entry when app location is disabled. Confirm the address before requesting a ride, especially at airports or large venues where several entrances share a name.
Manual entry reduces the app’s need to read the phone’s location at request time; it does not stop the driver, vehicle or transport authority from generating a trip record. Do not treat it as a way to prevent route tracking.

4. Inspect the app-store data disclosure
On Android, open the app’s store listing and read the data-safety or location-sharing disclosure. It may identify sharing with third parties and purposes such as advertising or marketing, account management, functionality and analytics. Use the disclosure as a question list for the app’s privacy settings, not as a certification.

Android warns: “If you do not see an information box, it does not mean that the app does not share location data.” The disclosure depends on store and device support and on information supplied by the developer. Silence is therefore not proof of non-sharing, and a listed purpose does not tell you exactly which recipients received a particular booking.
5. Turn off unnecessary account connections
Inside each travel account, review connected services, social sign-in links, loyalty-program connections, calendar or itinerary integrations, personalization and advertising choices. Disconnect tools you no longer use. A connected service can receive searches, preferences, booking links or technical information even when the travel app has no access to precise device location.
6. Review history, retention and deletion controls
Open the account’s privacy or data controls and look for activity history, saved searches, viewed properties, reservations, location history, download-your-data and deletion options. Delete records you no longer need, then set the shortest available auto-delete period that still supports your planning and receipts. Deleting an app from the phone is not the same as deleting the account data stored by the provider.
7. Repeat the audit after an update or a new booking
Major app updates can add a permission request, reset a choice or introduce a new connected feature. Recheck permissions after an update and after installing an app for a specific trip. A new hotel or flight booking may also create an account record even if location access remains off.
Google controls: Timeline and Search Services History are separate
Google provides two location-related areas that readers often confuse. Timeline can save precise device locations regularly, including when Google apps are not being used, if the feature is enabled. Google says, specifically, “Timeline is turned off by default.” That statement applies to Google Timeline; it is not a guarantee about other Google or travel-app collection.
Timeline controls let you review, edit and delete saved places and choose retention settings. Check whether it is enabled on each Google account used on the phone, because a work, family or secondary account can have different history.

Search Services History covers activity associated with services such as Maps, Hotels and Flights. Google says it can include searches, places viewed, travel booked, interactions with ads and a general-area location. Google also says saved location metadata in this history is automatically deleted after 30 days; other history categories and retention settings are managed separately.

How major travel services describe the data paths
| Service or source | Location-related data described | Other relevant data | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Precise device location through Timeline; general area inferred from IP; location-related activity in Search Services History | Maps, Hotels and Flights searches, places viewed, travel booked, ad interactions | Timeline being off does not disable every other location or activity source | |
| Uber | Device location, with Bluetooth and nearby Wi-Fi as possible inputs; driver and vehicle geolocation during a trip | Pickup, drop-off, route and timestamp records linked to the rider account | Disabling app location may require manual entry but does not necessarily remove driver-collected trip data |
| Expedia Group | Location-related information supplied by customers or generated through app and website technologies | Searches, reservations, preferences, account information, booking links and technical data; information from affiliates and partners | Connected third-party tools can create additional sharing when the user links an account |
| Airbnb | Precise or approximate location from IP, GPS or information supplied by the user; possible collection while the app is not in use when enabled | Searches, bookings, pages and services used, device and advertising identifiers, social-sign-in information | Exact behavior depends on permissions, settings, account choices and region |
What a VPN can and cannot change
A VPN can change the IP address that a service sees, which may alter an estimate of your general area based on that address. This is only an inference from the separate IP and device-location pathways documented by Google. It does not revoke GPS permission, replace an approximate-location choice, or delete searches, bookings and trip records already linked to an account.
For example, a VPN may make a hotel site estimate a different city from the one associated with your home connection, while the same app can still read precise device location if permission remains enabled. A booking made while signed in can still be tied to your account, email address, payment record and itinerary. Treat a VPN as a network-location measure, not as a complete travel-privacy control.
Private-browsing mode has a similar boundary. It can limit local browser history, but it does not stop a website from seeing online activity or an account from retaining a search and reservation. Review the account controls as well as the browser and network settings.
Choose settings by travel scenario
| Scenario | Least access that usually supports the task | Extra check |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional hotel or flight research | Location disabled or approximate; access only while using if the site genuinely needs local results | Delete saved searches and review personalization and ad settings |
| Ride request at a known address | Manual pickup and drop-off entry, or while-using access for the request | Remember that driver or vehicle data can still be linked to the trip |
| Turn-by-turn navigation | While-using precise location for the navigation session | Disable background access after the trip and clear unnecessary location history |
| Airport or venue pickup | One-time or while-using access, with the terminal and door entered manually when practical | Verify the pin before requesting; large venues often have multiple entrances |
| Connected itinerary or loyalty tool | No location permission unless the feature needs it | Review exactly which searches, preferences, booking links and account data the connection can receive |
| Frequent traveler using Google services | Use the minimum device permission required by the feature | Audit Timeline and Search Services History separately and set retention choices |
How to request deletion or limit retention
- Use the travel account’s privacy center or data settings to delete saved searches, viewed properties, location history and unused profile information.
- Look for a data-access or download tool before deletion if you need receipts, reservation numbers or reimbursement records.
- Disconnect social sign-ins, calendars, assistants and loyalty integrations that no longer serve a purpose.
- Set auto-delete to the shortest available period for activity that you do not need to retain.
- Submit a formal privacy request through the provider’s published process when the self-service controls do not cover the record. Keep the request specific—such as a date range, account identifier and type of activity.
- After the provider confirms deletion, check whether another connected service still holds a copy, such as an itinerary manager, email account or employer travel system.
Deletion may not remove information that a provider must retain for legal, security, fraud-prevention or accounting reasons. Policies also differ by country and account type, so read the service’s explanation of exceptions rather than assuming every record disappears immediately.

Common problems after tightening permissions
The app cannot find my pickup point
Switch from precise to approximate only if the app accepts a broad area; otherwise enter the full address manually or grant precise access while using the app for the request. At airports, add the terminal, door or designated rideshare zone.
Notifications or trip tracking stopped
Background features may require an “allow all the time” setting. Decide whether automatic tracking is worth that access. If not, open the app for the specific trip, use while-using access, and accept that arrival alerts or passive route recording may be unavailable.
I disabled Timeline but still see travel activity
Check Search Services History and the travel provider’s own account history. Google treats these as separate controls, and an IP-derived area can still be processed even when Timeline is off.

Do not interpret a missing disclosure as a clean bill of health. Android says disclosures can be absent and depend on developer-provided information. Read the provider’s privacy policy and inspect connected-service and advertising settings.
A VPN shows the wrong city
That is an expected side effect of changing the apparent IP area. Turn off the VPN for services that need an accurate regional result, or enter the destination manually. The VPN does not change GPS permission or account history.
How to compare travel apps or privacy settings
No universal ranking of travel apps by privacy is established by these policies. Compare the specific app, device and account using the same questions:
- Does the app request precise or approximate location?
- Can it operate with while-using, one-time or manual location entry instead of background access?
- Does it rely on device-derived location, IP-derived general area, or both?
- What searches, bookings, preferences, identifiers and usage records are retained?
- Are retention, deletion and auto-delete controls available and easy to find?
- Which sharing purposes and recipients are disclosed?
- Is the disclosure a developer statement in an app store, a policy description, or an independently verified audit?
The last distinction matters: a policy explains what a company says it does, while an app-store disclosure summarizes information supplied by the developer. Neither, by itself, proves that every network request in every version behaves identically.

Regulatory context and realistic expectations
Regulatory action can reveal risks without proving that every travel app follows the same practice. The Federal Trade Commission’s action involving X-Mode/Outlogic is an example concerning sensitive location-data sharing and downstream risks. It should not be read as evidence that all travel services sell location data.
A practical goal is therefore risk reduction, not a promise of perfect anonymity: deny unnecessary device access, avoid background permission unless the feature needs it, limit connected accounts, delete histories you do not need, and understand which trip records another service can still generate. The controls work together because each one addresses a different data path.
