TouchGrass AI turns a few outing choices—activity, time, and effort—into a short outdoor quest. Its defining design choice is a split: a server generates and checks quests with Ollama, while the browser keeps saved quests, progress, and photo evidence on the device. That makes an already-saved quest useful offline, but it does not make hosted quest generation offline.
What TouchGrass AI does
Project creator Shashank Chakraborty describes TouchGrass AI as a small companion for walks, familiar-area exploration, noticing nature, and photo walks. A user selects an outing type, available time, and effort level; the app returns a handful of simple prompts. Some prompts require photo evidence and remain incomplete until the photo is saved.
The intended interaction is brief: get a prompt, then put the device away and go outside. As Chakraborty puts it, “A model can suggest the next small thing to notice; it should not need a permanent place in the user’s pocket once the walk starts.”
How quest generation works
In the architecture Chakraborty describes, the browser sends the selected activity, duration, and difficulty to a same-origin server route. The route asks Ollama for structured JSON, then checks the response against the app’s quest rules. If generation fails or returns unusable output, the route supplies a ready-made quest instead.

This separates the model from the browser interface: the browser requests a quest, while the server handles model access and validation. The project account says local development runs Ollama on the developer’s computer, whereas the hosted demo uses Ollama’s API configured with a Gemma model. The API key stays in the server environment rather than being exposed in browser code. Ollama has documented OpenAI-compatible API patterns, including local endpoint examples, but that general documentation does not verify this project’s specific hosted setup.
For someone building a similar flow, the useful pattern is to treat model output as untrusted input: request a constrained format, validate it against the product’s rules, and provide a fallback for invalid or unavailable responses. In this app, that fallback is a ready-made quest rather than a broken or empty result.

What stays in the browser
Chakraborty says saved quests, task progress, and photo evidence are stored in the browser on the device. Photos are stored as blobs in IndexedDB, can be previewed or removed, and are excluded from the service worker cache. The creator also says the app neither requests nor sends location data and does not upload photo evidence.
IndexedDB is a browser API for storing structured client-side data, including files and blobs. Its data is scoped to an origin, and available storage limits and eviction behavior differ between browsers. This is a general property of browser storage, not an independent verification of TouchGrass AI’s implementation. See MDN’s IndexedDB API documentation.

What works offline—and what does not
Offline use has a specific boundary. The creator says the app shell can load offline after it has been visited, and a quest already saved in the browser can be taken along without a signal. Hosted quest generation, however, needs connectivity because it depends on a server request and the hosted Ollama API. The model is not described as running on each visitor’s phone.
- Before going out: open the app while connected, generate a quest, and save it.
- During the outing: use the saved quest and record progress or local photo evidence as the app allows.
- If you need a new generated quest: reconnect so the hosted generation route can reach its model service.
That distinction matters for planning: offline support applies to the previously visited app shell and saved material, not to every feature or to a fresh model response.

From a build bug to a working phone flow
Chakraborty reports testing the deployed app on a phone: a generated quest included a photo task, the photo was captured, and it remained attached to the saved quest. This is the creator’s account, not an independent product test.

The fix connected the home flow to local saving so quests appeared on the quest shelf. The practical lesson is that choosing local storage is only part of a local-first design. Navigation and lifecycle flows must also preserve and surface the saved data when a user leaves a task and comes back.

What the architecture means for builders
TouchGrass AI is a useful small example of assigning responsibilities to the part of the system best suited to them: a server-side model call for generating new content, and browser storage for material a user needs to carry forward on that device. The split avoids treating a network-dependent model call as an offline feature, while keeping saved quests and evidence available to the browser after generation.
- Keep secrets server-side. The described hosted setup keeps its model API key in the server environment, not client code.
- Validate generated content. Structured output still needs checks against the app’s own rules, with a fallback when it fails.
- Design the offline path explicitly. Decide which app assets are cached and which saved records remain available, and explain what still requires a connection.
- Account for browser storage limits. IndexedDB supports blobs, but it is origin-scoped and subject to browser-specific storage quotas and eviction behavior.
- Test the whole return journey. Saving, leaving a screen, returning home, and finding the quest again are part of persistence—not separate polish.
Ollama’s OpenAI compatibility documentation describes API access patterns; consult its current official documentation for setup details because API behavior can change. Neither that documentation nor the creator’s project account establishes comparative speed, privacy guarantees, or independent reliability results.
