Tokenized commodity lending lets you lock a digital asset linked to a commodity—such as a gold-backed token—as collateral for borrowed stablecoins or for a newly minted asset. The protocol values the token with a price feed, compares that value with your debt using a ratio such as loan-to-value (LTV) or minted-to-value (MTV), and can sell some or all of the collateral if the position becomes undercollateralized.

The mechanics are similar across many decentralized-finance designs, but the legal rights attached to each token, accepted collateral, oracle, thresholds, fees and liquidation process are product-specific. A token that references gold does not automatically give every holder a right to redeem physical metal.

What tokenized commodity lending is

A tokenized commodity is a blockchain asset intended to represent, or be backed by, a commodity. In the examples documented by individual providers, the commodity is gold. A lending market accepts an eligible token, records it as collateral, and advances another asset against it. The borrowed asset might be a stablecoin, as in Arowana’s description of borrowing USDT against AGT tokens, or it might be a protocol-created asset, as in Alloy’s example of depositing XAU₮ to mint aUSD₮.

This is collateralized credit rather than an unsecured loan. You retain a debt obligation while the protocol controls, escrows or otherwise encumbers the deposited tokens. If the collateral value falls too far relative to the debt, the protocol’s liquidation rules allow another party to repay debt and receive collateral.

OpenFi describes a broader real-world-asset lending design that can accept tokenized gold alongside other assets. That illustrates an important point: acceptance of one gold token by one market does not show that another market accepts it, nor that the two tokens confer the same ownership or redemption rights.

The lending lifecycle, step by step

  1. Select an eligible token and market. Check the exact contract, issuer, custody arrangement, jurisdiction and whether the market accepts that token. “Gold-backed” is not a universal legal or technical category.
  2. Deposit collateral. You transfer the token to the protocol’s collateral mechanism. The protocol records the quantity and applies the market’s risk parameters.
  3. Borrow or mint. You draw a debt asset up to the permitted LTV or MTV. Interest, stability charges or other fees may increase the amount owed over time.
  4. Monitor the position. An oracle supplies a reference price. The protocol recalculates collateral value and the debt ratio as prices and balances change.
  5. Repay or manage risk. You can repay debt, add collateral or reduce the position before a liquidation threshold is reached.
  6. Liquidation if necessary. When the ratio breaches the configured trigger, an authorized liquidator or other market participant repays some or all of the debt and receives collateral under the market’s incentive and fee rules.

Collateral rights are determined by the token issuer

Holding a commodity token does not by itself establish a right to take delivery of a bar or to redeem for cash. Redemption can depend on the issuer’s legal terms, minimum sizes, identity checks, geography, approved counterparties, custody arrangements, operating hours and fees. Some tokens may represent a direct claim; others may provide only contractual, indirect or limited exposure.

The lending protocol usually treats the token as a transferable asset with a market price. That treatment is separate from the issuer’s promise, if any, to redeem the underlying commodity. Before borrowing, read both documents: the token’s terms and the lending market’s collateral rules.

How protocols value collateral

Protocols use an oracle or price feed to estimate the collateral’s current value. OpenFi says its design uses Chainlink pricing and asset-specific parameters. That is the provider’s description, not an independent guarantee of update speed, accuracy or availability. A market may also apply a haircut, discount or buffer to account for volatility, thin trading or delayed redemption.

Important oracle questions include:

  • Which market or index supplies the price?
  • How often does the feed update, and what happens when the market is closed?
  • What is considered a stale or invalid price?
  • Is there a fallback feed, a circuit breaker or a pause authority?
  • Does the protocol use the same price for borrowing and liquidation?

A token can trade continuously while physical-metal markets, custodians or redemption channels operate more slowly. OpenFi’s framework describes liquidation discounts and buffers for possible redemption delays during stress. These are risk-design choices, not a promise that a liquidation will execute at a particular price.

LTV and MTV: the ratios that determine borrowing room

Loan-to-value (LTV) is the debt value divided by collateral value:

LTV = loan value ÷ collateral value × 100

Minted-to-value (MTV) uses the value of a protocol-minted asset in place of a conventional loan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MTV = minted value ÷ collateral value × 100

Suppose a hypothetical market accepts $100,000 of tokenized gold and permits a 60% initial LTV. The maximum starting debt would be $60,000, before transaction costs or other limits. If the gold token later falls to $75,000 while the debt remains $60,000, the LTV becomes 80%. The borrower has not borrowed more, but the collateral cushion has shrunk.

Interest and unpaid fees can produce the same effect even when the token price is unchanged: the numerator grows while collateral value stays constant. Conversely, repaying debt or adding collateral lowers the ratio.

There is no universal maximum borrowing percentage. Alloy’s published documentation for its aUSD₮ vault identifies a 75% MTV liquidation point. Arowana publishes its own asset limits and liquidation values, which differ by asset. Those figures are terms of the named products, can change, and should not be treated as market-wide standards.

When liquidation can occur

A position becomes eligible for liquidation when its measured LTV or MTV reaches the protocol’s configured liquidation threshold. The trigger may be crossed because:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the collateral token price falls;
  • interest, fees or a minted balance increase the debt;
  • the oracle updates after a period of stale pricing;
  • the protocol changes a risk parameter under its governance rules; or
  • the token becomes subject to a market or eligibility restriction.

Eligibility is not always the same as immediate full closure. Some systems allow a liquidator to act on only part of the position; others permit a complete close. Check whether the market has a grace period, a minimum debt size, a keeper queue, whitelisted liquidators or emergency pause controls.

What liquidation does to the borrower

Liquidation reduces an undercollateralized position by exchanging collateral for debt repayment. A liquidator supplies the repayment asset, and the protocol transfers collateral according to its rules. The liquidator normally receives an incentive—such as a discount or premium—intended to cover gas, slippage, inventory and price risk. The borrower can therefore lose more collateral value than the debt amount that was repaid.

Partial liquidation

Arowana describes a partial process in which only enough collateral is sold to reduce the loan to a safer LTV. If a position is above its trigger, the protocol can sell a portion, apply the proceeds to debt, and leave the remaining collateral in place. The resulting position is smaller rather than necessarily closed.

Full or selectable liquidation

Alloy says eligible positions in its documented example can be acted on by whitelisted liquidators, who return aUSD₮ for some or all of the XAU₮ collateral. Its published aUSD₮ vault terms state a 75% liquidation point, a 105% collateral premium and a 0.75% liquidation fee. These are Alloy’s stated parameters for that vault, not generic tokenized-lending figures; confirm the live terms before relying on them.

Whether liquidation repays all debt depends on the amount sold, available market liquidity and the protocol’s design. A partial sale may leave residual debt. A full close may repay the entire balance, but execution costs and collateral discounts can still affect the final result.

How documented designs differ

Design Collateral and debt example Valuation or risk details Liquidation description
Alloy collateral minted position XAU₮ deposited to mint aUSD₮ Published vault example uses a 75% MTV liquidation point Whitelisted liquidators; some or all collateral may be returned for aUSD₮; published terms include a 105% collateral premium and 0.75% fee
Arowana lending flow AGT described as gold collateral for USDT borrowing Asset-specific limits and liquidation values are published by the provider Partial liquidation can sell enough collateral to bring the loan back to a safer LTV
OpenFi RWA framework Tokenized gold accepted alongside other real-world assets Chainlink pricing and asset-specific settings are described; buffers address volatility and possible redemption delays Framework discusses liquidation discounts; exact execution depends on the market’s live parameters

These designs should not be ranked by comparing one percentage in isolation. A 70% LTV can represent very different risk depending on oracle behavior, token liquidity, interest accrual, liquidation incentives, redemption speed and the post-liquidation target.

Risks that can change the outcome

Price and oracle risk

If an oracle is stale, unavailable or materially different from executable market prices, the protocol’s valuation and the price available during liquidation can diverge. The available provider descriptions explain oracle use but do not establish universal accuracy or failure rates.

Execution, slippage and liquidity

A liquidator may need to sell collateral into a thin market. Volatility, trading fees, network congestion and redemption delays can reduce proceeds. A token’s quoted price is not a guarantee that the same size can be sold at that price.

Issuer and redemption risk

Underlying-metal claims depend on custody, audits, legal enforceability and the issuer’s ability to process redemptions. A lending protocol’s acceptance of a token does not independently verify those arrangements.

Smart-contract and governance risk

DeFi services are implemented through smart contracts and governance systems. Bugs, administrator powers, parameter changes, oracle integration errors and emergency procedures can affect access to collateral. A BIS working-paper page published on 2023-01-19 notes that programmability “may open up new possibilities for more competitive financial markets, and could bring efficiency gains,” while the same technological flexibility also makes contract and governance design material to risk. That observation is background, not an audit of any commodity protocol.

Regulatory and jurisdictional risk

On 2025-12-08, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission listed staff guidance on tokenized assets used as collateral in futures and swaps. The guidance concerns that derivatives context; it does not determine the legal status of every token, lending arrangement or jurisdiction. Obtain jurisdiction-specific advice where legal classification, custody or marketing rules matter.

A borrower’s due-diligence checklist

Record the answers before depositing collateral, and recheck them whenever the market changes its parameters:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What exactly does the token represent, and what redemption rights are written in its issuer terms?
  • Where is the collateral held, and who can freeze, seize or transfer it?
  • Which contract address and network are approved?
  • What are the initial LTV or MTV, liquidation threshold, maximum debt and minimum position size?
  • How do interest and fees accrue?
  • What oracle is used, how is staleness handled, and is there a fallback?
  • Can anyone liquidate, or only whitelisted actors?
  • Is liquidation partial, full or selectable, and what ratio must remain afterward?
  • What premium, discount, fee or penalty applies to collateral transferred in liquidation?
  • How deep is the collateral market, and how quickly can the underlying asset be redeemed?
  • What pause, recovery, upgrade and governance powers exist?
  • What happens if the network, oracle or issuer is unavailable?

Practical ways to manage liquidation risk

  1. Start below the maximum. Treat the published borrowing limit as a ceiling, not a target. A lower opening LTV creates room for price movements and debt growth.
  2. Track both sides of the ratio. Monitor the token price, accrued interest, fees and any minted balance rather than watching collateral price alone.
  3. Keep repayment liquidity available. A stablecoin held elsewhere may let you repay or add collateral before a trigger is reached.
  4. Set alerts at several levels. Use an early-warning level below the liquidation threshold, because oracle updates and market moves can occur faster than a manual response.
  5. Read parameter-change notices. Governance can alter accepted assets, thresholds, fees or liquidator permissions.
  6. Test the exit path. Confirm that you can repay, withdraw and transfer the token under ordinary conditions before relying on the position during stress.

Bottom line

Tokenized commodity lending converts a commodity-linked token into borrowing capacity through an overcollateralized position. LTV or MTV measures how much debt sits against the oracle-valued collateral; falling collateral prices or rising debt push the ratio toward liquidation. Liquidation may repay only part of the debt or close the position, and the borrower can lose collateral to discounts, premiums and fees. The decisive facts are always the live terms of the specific token and protocol—especially redemption rights, oracle behavior, thresholds, liquidity and liquidation mechanics—not the general label “gold-backed.”
