Write tests from the software’s contract, not from the code an AI assistant produced. Define valid and invalid inputs, expected results, state changes, and errors; cover normal, boundary, combination, and failure cases; then challenge the suite with deliberately wrong implementations and generated inputs. A green run proves only that the current tests passed—it does not prove that the generated code is correct.

Why AI-generated code needs independent tests

An AI coding assistant can produce code that looks plausible, follows familiar patterns, and passes a few examples while violating an important requirement. The most reliable defense is an oracle that comes from the specification: a human-derived statement of what the program must do, separate from the implementation being checked.

NIST’s Code Pilot evaluation makes this distinction explicit. Its evaluation plan, revised February 19, 2026, uses 40 simple and 10 extended Python specifications and evaluates generated tests against one correct implementation and two incorrect variants. The exercise asks whether tests detect behavior that is wrong, not merely whether they execute the submitted code.

EvalPlus reported the same problem at benchmark scale. Its 2023 abstract describes expanding HumanEval tests by 80 times and reports pass@k reductions of up to 19.3–28.9% after the expanded tests were applied. The paper also reports an average 15.1% reduction across its 14-model evaluation. These are benchmark results, not a defect rate for production software, but they show why a small happy-path suite can overstate correctness.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the following workflow for code generated in any language. The examples use Python and pytest because its parameterization makes a behavior matrix easy to maintain, but the reasoning applies to other test frameworks.

1. Freeze the intended behavior before reading the implementation

Start with the task specification, API contract, issue description, or acceptance criteria. AI-generated comments and function names can be useful clues, but they are not the authority when they conflict with the requirement.

  • Inputs: Record types, formats, allowed ranges, optional fields, defaults, and encoding rules.
  • Outputs: Specify the exact value, type, ordering, precision, and representation that callers may rely on.
  • Errors: State which invalid inputs raise which exception or produce which error response. Include the required message or error code when clients depend on it.
  • State and side effects: Note database writes, emitted events, files, caches, network calls, idempotency, and cleanup obligations.
  • Timing and limits: Identify timeouts, retry rules, size limits, rate limits, and behavior under overload if those are part of the service contract.

If the requirement is ambiguous, resolve it with the product owner or document the chosen interpretation. A test cannot establish intent that was never specified; it can only encode an agreed interpretation. Keep the specification notes beside the tests so a future change updates both.

“Test cases which have been created to specifically show the presence (and later, the absence) of a bug can be used to identify issues in the absence of more general ‘first principles’ assurance approaches for detecting bugs.”

— National Institute of Standards and Technology, Recommended Minimum Standard for Vendor or Developer Verification of Code, section 2.8

2. Turn the contract into a behavior matrix

For every meaningful input or state dimension, plan at least one representative, boundary, invalid, and combination case. Do not generate cases by copying branches from the AI’s implementation; derive them from the contract.

Dimension Representative case Boundary case Invalid case Combination or state case
Numeric range Value in the middle of the allowed range Lowest and highest allowed values Just below and above the range; wrong type Boundary value with another optional flag enabled
Text input Typical, correctly formatted string Empty, maximum length, and non-ASCII text Malformed syntax, forbidden character, or null Whitespace plus a Unicode character or a duplicate
Collections Several distinct items Empty and one-item collections; maximum size Wrong element type or oversized request Duplicates, mixed ordering, and repeated calls
State First call on a valid object Already-complete or already-empty state Missing dependency or closed resource Retry after partial failure; concurrent or repeated operation
External dependency Expected successful response Slow response or response at a size limit Timeout, malformed payload, authorization failure Retry followed by success, or permanent failure after cleanup

Meaningful combinations matter because each dimension may be correct in isolation yet fail together. For example, a parser may handle a maximum-length string and a quoted field separately but fail when both occur in the same record. Prioritize combinations that the specification, threat model, or production history makes plausible; exhaustive combinations are rarely affordable.

3. Assert results that are independently knowable

Each test should compare an actual result with an expected result calculated from the contract, a trusted fixture, or a deliberately simple reference algorithm. Avoid assertions that merely prove the function ran, returned a non-empty value, or reproduced its own internal calculation.

For example, suppose the contract says that parse_percentage accepts a decimal number from 0 through 100, trims surrounding whitespace, returns a Decimal, and raises ValueError for a number outside that range. The tests can state those rules without inspecting how the function parses text:

import pytest
from decimal import Decimal

from app.validation import parse_percentage

@pytest.mark.parametrize(
    ('text', 'expected'),
    [
        ('0', Decimal('0')),
        (' 12.50 ', Decimal('12.50')),
        ('100', Decimal('100')),
    ],
)
def test_accepts_valid_percentages(text, expected):
    assert parse_percentage(text) == expected

@pytest.mark.parametrize('text', ['-0.01', '100.01', '', 'ten', None])
def test_rejects_invalid_percentages(text):
    with pytest.raises(ValueError):
        parse_percentage(text)

The expected values are fixed by the contract, not obtained by calling another function from the same generated module. If a reference implementation is needed for a complex algorithm, keep it small, obvious, and independently written; otherwise a shared mistake can make both implementation and test agree on the wrong answer.

4. Test failure behavior, not just successful output

Invalid-input tests are only useful when they verify the complete failure contract. Check the exception type or HTTP status, the error code or message when specified, that no partial state was committed, and that resources were released. A test that accepts any exception can hide a programming error such as KeyError where the API promises ValueError.

For side-effecting code, assert both what happened and what did not happen. A payment request that rejects an invalid amount should not write an order, send a charge request, or consume a one-time token. Use mocks to isolate an external dependency and verify call arguments, call count, and ordering where those are contractual. Then retain at least a smaller integration layer that exercises the real serialization, authentication, and response handling; mocks must not become a substitute for integration testing.

Also test cleanup paths. A temporary file should be removed after a parse failure, a database transaction should roll back, and a lock should be released when a dependency times out. These failures often remain invisible when tests assert only the returned error.

5. Challenge the suite with plausible wrong code

A useful test suite rejects implementations that violate the contract. Before trusting a green run, ask which realistic mistakes it would catch:

Deliberate defect Test that should fail What the failure demonstrates
Use < instead of <= at a permitted maximum Maximum boundary case The suite distinguishes an inclusive limit from an exclusive one
Skip validation for a missing field Missing-field case asserting the specified error Required-input checks are enforced
Return data in insertion order instead of required sorted order Unsorted input with an exact ordered expected result Ordering is part of the observable contract
Return a success response after a dependency timeout Timeout fixture asserting error and no commit Failure propagation and transaction behavior are covered
Call an external service twice Successful request asserting one call and idempotent state Side-effect count is tested, not just final output
Raise the wrong exception class Invalid input using pytest.raises(ExpectedError) Callers can rely on the documented error interface

You can perform this check manually by making a temporary one-line mutation, or use mutation-testing software appropriate to your language. The goal is not to maximize a mutation score blindly; it is to discover assertions that are too weak and add the smallest test that expresses the missing behavior. NIST’s Code Pilot uses a correct implementation plus a mutated implementation and one that omits TypeError/ValueError checks, providing a concrete model for this exercise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Add breadth with parameterization, properties, and fuzzing

Use parameterized examples for named cases

Pytest’s @pytest.mark.parametrize runs one assertion body against many input and expected-output pairs. Give each case a descriptive identifier when the failure message needs context. Keep these examples for requirements that are easiest to explain with exact values: protocol examples, regulatory limits, known bugs, and representative user scenarios.

Use properties when examples cannot cover the input space

A property states an invariant that must hold for many generated inputs. Examples include “sorting preserves length and returns a nondecreasing sequence,” “encoding then decoding returns the original valid value,” or “a retry-safe operation has the same final state when invoked twice.” Property-based tools can generate diverse values, but the property itself must come from the contract. A vague property such as “the result is truthy” provides little protection.

Fuzz parsers and interfaces

Fuzzing supplies malformed, extreme, and unexpected inputs that hand-written cases may miss. Apply it to parsers, protocol handlers, file readers, validators, and public endpoints, with limits on execution time, memory, input size, and external effects. Preserve any input that reveals a crash, data corruption, security issue, or incorrect result as a deterministic regression test.

EvalPlus combines generated and mutation-based test-input strategies in its benchmark work. Its findings support using generated inputs as a supplement, not a replacement, for clear hand-written cases and domain-specific assertions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Make every fixed defect a regression test

When a bug is found, first reproduce it with a test that fails against the buggy behavior. Then repair the implementation and keep the test permanently. The regression test should be as narrow as possible while preserving the real contract: include the triggering input, the expected result or error, and any required side-effect assertions.

  1. Record the user-visible symptom and the relevant contract clause.
  2. Create a deterministic test that fails before the fix.
  3. Confirm that the failure is caused by the intended defect, not by a broken fixture.
  4. Apply the smallest safe repair and run the focused test.
  5. Run the full suite, including integration and security checks.
  6. Keep the regression test with a clear name and, where useful, a reference to the issue identifier.

NIST specifically identifies historical bug-catching tests as a verification technique. A regression suite is therefore more than a record of past incidents: it is an accumulating boundary around behavior that has already proved easy to break.

8. Interpret coverage without mistaking it for correctness

Statement, branch, and line coverage show which code executed. They do not show whether the expected result was correct, whether an assertion was meaningful, or whether an untested wrong branch would have been detected. A generated test can execute every line while asserting only that a response is not empty.

Use coverage as a map for questions: Which error branch has no test? Which cleanup path is unreachable in the suite? Which new module lacks boundary cases? Pair the report with mutation results, defect history, and review of the behavior matrix. A lower coverage number can be acceptable when the uncovered code is defensive boilerplate; a high number can be misleading when assertions are weak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Choose a layered strategy that fits the risk

Strategy Behavior covered Defect sensitivity Input breadth Maintenance and fit
Hand-written examples Named requirements, exact outputs, documented errors High for the cases expressed; low outside them Small and intentional Clear failures and low runtime; essential for every contract
Boundary and negative tests Limits, invalid data, failure and cleanup paths High for validation and off-by-one defects Focused on risk edges Usually inexpensive; prioritize for public inputs and safety-critical rules
Parameterized tests One rule over many explicit cases Good when expected values are independently known Moderate, with visible case coverage Low duplication; excellent for pytest unit suites
Property-based or fuzz tests Invariants, malformed and unusual inputs Can expose interactions missed by examples Large or generated Needs shrinking, seeds, limits, and readable failure reproduction
Mutation testing Whether assertions reject plausible wrong code Directly measures sensitivity to selected mutations Varies with mutants and tests Higher runtime; run on critical modules or sampled changes
Integration and end-to-end tests Serialization, authentication, databases, queues, and real boundaries Finds wiring and environment defects unit tests can miss Production-like scenarios Slower and more variable; keep a focused layer for critical paths

Combine layers according to risk, runtime, language, and deployment context. Do not rank one technique as universally best: a parser may need fuzzing, a financial calculation may need exhaustive boundary examples and a reference model, and a distributed workflow may need failure-injection integration tests.

10. Include security, overload, and stateful scenarios when they apply

AI-generated code often handles the ordinary request but omits defensive behavior. For software exposed to untrusted input, test authentication and authorization decisions, injection metacharacters, path traversal, oversized payloads, resource exhaustion, rate limits, and safe error disclosure. Use harmless test fixtures and isolated environments; do not send fuzz traffic to production dependencies.

For concurrent or stateful components, test repeated calls, retries, cancellation, duplicate messages, stale versions, partial writes, and recovery after restart. Verify invariants such as “a request is charged at most once” or “a failed transaction leaves no visible record.” Where timing is nondeterministic, control clocks and use synchronization primitives rather than arbitrary sleeps.

11. Run tests consistently in CI and supported environments

  1. Run fast unit and regression tests on every change.
  2. Run integration tests with disposable dependencies and controlled test data.
  3. Run property-based or fuzz jobs with fixed seeds in pull requests and longer exploratory budgets on a schedule.
  4. Run mutation checks on critical modules or a representative sample so weak assertions are found without making every build impractical.
  5. Test each supported Python, operating-system, database, or runtime version that can change behavior.
  6. Save failing seeds, logs, and minimized inputs as build artifacts, then convert important failures into regression tests.

Keep the environment reproducible: pin dependencies where appropriate, freeze locale and timezone assumptions, and make network and clock behavior explicit. A test that passes only on the author’s machine is not evidence that the generated code works for its supported deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Diagnose a green suite that still feels wrong

The tests mirror the implementation

Rewrite expected values from the contract or an independent fixture. Do not call the same helper, constant, or algorithm inside the test unless it is an independently maintained reference.

Assertions are too broad

Replace checks such as “no exception,” “result is not None,” or “status is successful” with exact values, error classes, state transitions, and side-effect counts required by the contract.

Only happy paths are covered

Complete the behavior matrix with invalid, boundary, combination, timeout, retry, and cleanup cases. Ask what happens one step before and one step after every permitted limit.

Mocks make everything pass

Verify that mocks enforce realistic argument and response contracts, then add integration tests for serialization, authentication, persistence, and error translation. A mock that returns exactly what the implementation expects can conceal a broken real interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failures are flaky or unreadable

Control randomness with recorded seeds, replace sleeps with explicit synchronization, isolate shared state, and give parameterized cases descriptive IDs. A minimized, reproducible failure is far more likely to become a lasting regression test.

A compact review checklist

  • Is every assertion traceable to a written requirement or invariant?
  • Are normal, boundary, invalid, and meaningful combination cases present?
  • Do tests verify exact results, error contracts, cleanup, and side effects?
  • Would an off-by-one error, missing validation, wrong branch, or wrong return value fail?
  • Has at least one plausible mutation or known-wrong implementation been tried?
  • Are generated or fuzzed inputs used where the input space or parser risk warrants them?
  • Does every fixed defect have a deterministic regression test?
  • Is coverage being used to find omissions rather than presented as a correctness score?
  • Do integration tests check real boundaries that unit-test mocks cannot validate?
  • Do CI jobs run in every supported environment and preserve failure inputs?

The pytest documentation covers fixtures, parametrization, exception assertions, plugins, and CI integration. For a structured, book-length treatment, Python Testing with pytest, Second Edition by Brian Okken is a 272-page paperback published in February 2022; its publisher lists chapters on pytest, parametrization, exceptions and corner cases, coverage, and CI. It teaches general Python testing rather than a special method for AI-generated code.

The central discipline remains the same regardless of tool: specify the behavior independently, test the edges and failures deliberately, attack the suite with wrong code and varied inputs, and preserve every discovered defect as a regression case.
