Write Gherkin scenarios around business rules and outcomes—not buttons, selectors, or waits—and let Playwright automation handle the browser details. BDD is a collaborative way to discover and agree on software behavior through examples; Gherkin structures those examples, while Playwright can automate them. They are related layers, not the same tool. Cucumber describes BDD as discovery, collaboration, and examples, while Playwright documents its own test runner.

What makes a Gherkin scenario readable?

A readable scenario states a meaningful situation, an action, and an outcome in the language the team uses to discuss its product. Gherkin’s keywords give each part a job: Given establishes context, When describes an event or action, and Then states the expected result. Cucumber’s Gherkin reference explains these roles.

Feature: Account access

Scenario: A registered customer signs in successfully
Given a registered customer has an active account
When the customer signs in with valid credentials
Then the customer sees their account overview

This example focuses on a customer and an observable result. It does not dictate how the page is built or how the browser reaches that result. Cucumber advises avoiding assumptions about technology or interface and keeping implementation details out of the example. The Gherkin reference also recommends making a Then step assert an observable outcome.

Keep interface mechanics out of the scenario

“The customer signs in with valid credentials” communicates intent. “Click the blue button, find #login-submit, then wait 500 milliseconds” describes a particular interface and automation strategy. The second form is harder for a business representative to validate and more likely to become stale after a redesign.

Selectors, locators, navigation, test data setup, and timing belong in the automation implementation. The scenario should describe the behavior the team wants to preserve; the step definition translates that behavior into browser actions.

BDD is a collaboration practice, not a test syntax

Writing Given/When/Then steps does not, by itself, make a process behavior-driven. BDD starts with conversation: people explore examples of desired behavior, agree what they mean, then document those examples so the team can implement and automate them. Cucumber’s introduction distinguishes discovery and collaboration from testing.

Business-readable wording only helps if the people whose understanding it is meant to represent actually review it. Cucumber recommends that teams collaborate while establishing their Gherkin style. Once a working style exists, an automation and quality pair may draft scenarios, with active review from a product owner or business representative. See Cucumber’s guidance on collaboration.

How Playwright fits into a Gherkin workflow

Playwright Test provides a JavaScript/TypeScript test runner, browser fixtures, and assertions for browser automation. Its documentation describes the runner, and its assertion documentation covers checks with expect.

In a Gherkin-based workflow, the feature file holds the readable example, step definitions map its phrases to automation code, and Playwright performs the browser actions and checks. The step-definition layer is the bridge: a sentence about a customer seeing an account overview can invoke navigation and assert that the expected overview is visible.

Playwright’s documentation describes Playwright Test as its own runner; it does not establish that Playwright natively runs .feature files or endorse a particular Cucumber adapter. Treat Gherkin integration as a separate layer and verify current compatibility and maintenance before selecting an adapter. Do not infer official support from the fact that both tools can be used in one workflow.

Gherkin with Playwright or Playwright’s native runner?

Playwright can also express tests directly in its native runner, with readable test names and browser interactions, without feature files. The choice is not about which syntax is automatically more business-friendly; it is about whether the team will use Gherkin as a shared specification and sustain the collaboration that gives it value.

Decision factor Gherkin with Playwright Playwright Test directly
Business review Feature files can provide a shared format for business representatives to review, if they are actively involved. Readable names and code can document intent, but this does not provide Gherkin feature files as a separate shared format.
Automation structure Step definitions connect scenario language to browser actions, adding an integration layer to maintain. Tests use Playwright’s runner and APIs directly, without a Gherkin step-definition layer.
Runner capabilities Playwright can perform the browser automation; the chosen Gherkin integration must fit the team’s workflow. Playwright’s own runner includes fixtures and supports debugging, UI mode, and reporting workflows.
Best fit Consider it when stakeholders will read and review scenarios and examples clarify domain rules. Consider it when the team wants Playwright’s native workflow and feature files would not add useful collaboration.

This is a decision framework, not a measured comparison: the documentation does not establish universal maintenance costs or a single best choice. Playwright’s runner and workflows are documented at Playwright Test and UI mode; Gherkin’s role is described in the Gherkin reference.

A practical review checklist

  • Does the scenario express a rule or goal? Prefer customer and product language over the names of controls or code identifiers.
  • Can a business representative understand the expected result? Make the Then outcome visible and specific enough to agree on.
  • Does each keyword have a clear role? Use Given for context, When for the action or event, and Then for the result.
  • Are browser mechanics hidden in step definitions? Keep selectors, waits, and setup out of the shared example unless they are themselves part of the behavior being specified.
  • Will the right people review it? A scenario is not shared understanding until the people responsible for the behavior have had a chance to discuss and agree on it.
