Use AI to help plan and draft a blog post, not to replace the reporting and judgment that make it worth reading. Start with a clear brief and trustworthy source material, work through one task at a time, and verify every factual claim before publishing. Google does not categorically prohibit AI-assisted writing; its guidance focuses on whether a page is useful, accurate, and made for readers rather than generated primarily to manipulate search rankings.
Can you use AI to write blog posts?
Yes. Google Search Central says generative AI can help with research and add structure to original content. It also warns that AI can produce inaccuracies and that large volumes of pages created without added value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. The practical distinction is not simply whether AI was involved: the writer remains responsible for accuracy, originality, usefulness, and the decision to publish.
Google’s 2023 explanation says its focus is content quality rather than how content is produced, while automation used primarily to manipulate search rankings violates spam policies. That is not a guarantee that a particular AI-assisted post will rank or even appear in search. How to use AI to write a blog post
A reliable workflow makes the AI’s role specific and keeps editorial decisions with the writer. Use it to organize verified material, surface gaps, and improve a draft—not as a substitute for sources or firsthand knowledge.

Write the brief yourself
Define the intended reader, the problem the post should solve, what the reader should be able to do afterward, and the publication’s point of view. Note which claims need evidence and any important limits or exclusions. Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content serves an audience, demonstrates relevant knowledge, and leaves readers able to achieve their goal.

Gather sources before requesting prose
Find credible sources and collect any firsthand observations or expertise that will make the post specific. You can ask AI to organize supplied notes or identify questions that remain unanswered. Do not treat its output as evidence: verify claims against the original source, especially names, dates, quotations, numbers, recommendations, and technical details.

Ask for an outline, then review it
Request an outline that follows the reader’s question. Have it identify where evidence, examples, or caveats belong. Before drafting, check for missing steps, repeated points, and claims that have no supporting material. Fix those problems in the outline rather than letting them spread through a full draft.

Draft one section at a time
Give the tool the relevant notes and source excerpts for a single section, along with the audience and desired voice. Ask it to separate supplied facts from suggestions and flag uncertainty. That instruction is a useful safeguard, not a guarantee: check the resulting claims yourself.

Add what a generic draft cannot
Bring in your own examples, reporting, experience, comparisons, or informed point of view. Remove passages that merely repeat common advice or could be produced without understanding the subject. Google’s guidance emphasizes useful, distinctive content for the audience.

Fact-check and edit for voice
Compare every factual statement with a suitable source. Remove invented citations and unsupported detail. Rewrite awkward or generic language so it is clear and consistent with your publication’s voice. Google’s guidance calls for manual review of AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness.

Read the finished page as an audience member
Make sure the headline accurately describes the article, the organization is easy to follow, and the post answers the reader’s question without requiring them to search again. Review metadata and structured data as well as the body text; Google’s accuracy and trustworthiness guidance applies to them too.

What prompts should you use to write a blog post with AI?
Prompts work best when they name the audience, the task, the constraints, and the material the tool may use. Adapt these templates to your subject; they are practical examples, not quotations or endorsements from Google or an AI vendor.

Turn a brief into an outline
I am writing for [specific audience]. The reader wants to [reader outcome]. Using only the notes and sources below, propose a clear outline for a blog post. For every section, state the reader question it answers and identify any fact or example that still needs verification. Do not invent statistics, citations, quotations, or claims. Does Google penalize AI-written content?
Google’s stated guidance does not categorically prohibit AI-assisted content. It warns against using automation primarily to manipulate rankings and against producing many pages without adding value for readers. A post should be judged by whether it is helpful, original, and trustworthy—not by an assumption that using AI automatically earns or avoids a ranking penalty.
Google’s guide to search features that use generative AI, announced May 15, 2026, says foundational SEO practices remain relevant. It does not require special AI-only tactics such as llms.txt, obligatory content chunking, or rewriting specifically for AI. Do you need to disclose that you used AI?
Google’s people-first guidance does not state a universal disclosure requirement for every post. It suggests giving readers context about who created the content, how it was made, and why automation was useful when they could reasonably wonder about the process. Whether to explain AI’s role therefore depends on the content and reader expectations, rather than a blanket rule that every AI-assisted article needs a label.
