To write and run a Brainfuck program, save a text file containing Brainfuck commands, pass that file to an interpreter, and observe the interpreter’s byte or character output. The language has only eight commands, but the interpreter still matters: cell width, overflow, tape limits, bracket errors, input, output, and newline handling are implementation choices.
This guide builds the pointer-and-tape mental model first, then walks through source files, loops, a first working program, execution modes, portability troubleshooting, and a repeatable beginner workflow.
What a Brainfuck program is
Brainfuck source is ordinary text. The interpreter reads the source from left to right while maintaining two pieces of state:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- A pointer, which identifies the current tape cell.
- An ordered tape of cells containing integer values.
The Brainfuck language reference describes a tape of at least 30,000 cells, all initially zero, with the pointer starting at the leftmost cell. It also describes cells as holding an integer value, minimally and usually one byte. Those are reference conventions, not guarantees that every interpreter uses the same tape size or cell representation.

Every instruction acts either on the pointer, on the current cell, or on input and output connected to the current cell. The eight commands are:
| Command | Meaning |
|---|---|
> |
Move the pointer one cell to the right. |
< |
Move the pointer one cell to the left. |
+ |
Increment the current cell. |
- |
Decrement the current cell. |
. |
Output the current cell’s value. |
, |
Read input into the current cell. |
[ |
If the current cell is zero, jump to the instruction after the matching ]; otherwise continue. |
] |
If the current cell is nonzero, jump back to the matching [; otherwise continue. |
Characters other than these eight symbols are ignored by the reference language. That permits whitespace and comments, but an apparent comment containing one of the eight command characters is still executable code.
How loops and cells work
Square brackets do not test a separate Boolean condition. They test the value in the current cell every time control reaches a bracket.

At [, a zero current cell skips the entire loop. A nonzero cell enters the loop. At ], a nonzero current cell jumps back to the matching opening bracket; a zero cell continues after the closing bracket.
The common counting pattern [-] repeatedly decrements the current cell until it reaches zero. If the cell starts at 3, the loop executes three times and leaves 0. Whether decrementing below zero wraps, traps, or behaves another way is interpreter-dependent, so do not use underflow as an implicit feature until you have checked the implementation.
Moving a counter to another cell
Consider:
+++[>++<-]
The pointer starts in cell 0. The three plus signs make cell 0 equal to 3. Each loop pass moves right, adds 2 to cell 1, moves left, and subtracts 1 from cell 0. After three passes, cell 0 is 0 and cell 1 is 6. This illustrates why tracing both pointer position and cell values is essential.
Pair brackets before running
For nested loops, match brackets from the inside out. A useful paper method is to scan the source from left to right, push each opening bracket onto a stack, and remove the most recent opening bracket when you see a closing bracket. Every closing bracket needs a corresponding opening bracket, and the stack must be empty at the end. This checks the source structure before you investigate cell values. Interpreters differ in whether they reject an unmatched bracket before execution or report it only when control reaches it.
Write a first program
A reliable first exercise is to output the letter A. In the usual byte-oriented interpretation, uppercase A has value 65. This program builds 64 in the next cell, adds one, and outputs it:
++++++++[>++++++++<-]>+.
Trace the program
++++++++sets cell 0 to 8.- The loop moves to cell 1, adds 8, returns to cell 0, and subtracts 1.
- After eight passes, cell 0 is 0 and cell 1 is 64.
>selects cell 1, and+changes it to 65..sends the current cell to the interpreter’s output device. A byte-oriented interpreter displays this asA; another output convention may display the value differently.
Run this unchanged first. Then alter one command, run it again, and predict the difference before looking at the output. Changing the final + to -, for example, outputs the value immediately before 65 in the interpreter’s chosen representation.

A one-byte echo program
For an input exercise, use:
,.
The comma reads one input unit into the current cell and the dot outputs that cell. The exact input unit, end-of-file behavior, and output encoding are implementation details. If you need to test two input bytes, this variant stores them in adjacent cells and prints them in order:
,>,<.>.
It reads the first byte into cell 0, the second into cell 1, returns to cell 0 to print the first, then moves right and prints the second.

Create and edit a source file
- Open a plain-text editor rather than a word processor.
- Enter only the Brainfuck source and any comments you deliberately want the interpreter to ignore.
- Save the file as plain ASCII text when possible. The language reference calls
.ban ideal extension. Some tools use another extension;.bfis also common, but the reference cautions that.bfis used for Befunge source in some contexts. - Record which interpreter and options you used. Reproducing the same cell and input settings makes later debugging much easier.
Whitespace, words, and ordinary punctuation that are not Brainfuck commands are ignored. Nevertheless, keep comments free of >, <, +, -, [, ], ., and ,. A comment such as “add + one more” changes the program because the plus sign is an instruction.
For a readable annotated file, put explanatory text on lines containing letters and spaces only, or keep explanations outside the source file. Do not assume that an interpreter has a special comment syntax unless its documentation defines one.
Source-file requirements
A Brainfuck file does not need a compiler project, a manifest, or named variables. It needs plain text and an interpreter that accepts that text. Keep the file in a known directory, use the extension expected by the selected tool, and avoid formatting features that insert smart punctuation or hidden markup. If you move the file between systems, verify that the eight command characters were not replaced by typographic equivalents.
Run the program with an interpreter
Brainfuck is interpreted: the source is supplied to a program that parses the eight commands and executes them. The exact executable name and command-line switches depend on the implementation.
Recommended Free Tools
Run a file
Choose the file-execution mode documented by your interpreter and pass the saved filename. A typical command shape is an interpreter executable followed by program.b; use the actual executable name and options supplied by your installation. If the command reports that the file cannot be opened, check the current directory, spelling, extension, and read permissions.
Evaluate code directly
Some interpreters accept a source string as a command-line argument instead of reading a file. The cited C implementation documents direct evaluation as one of its modes. This is useful for tiny tests such as ,., but shell quoting can change characters such as brackets and angle brackets. For anything longer than a short experiment, a file is less error-prone.
Use an interactive console
The same documented C implementation opens an interactive console when invoked without arguments. An interactive prompt is useful for checking a small pointer movement or cell operation before placing it in a larger file. Prompt behavior, history, input termination, and whether state persists between lines are implementation-specific.

Verify what you actually ran
- Confirm that the interpreter accepted the file rather than silently reading an empty or different file.
- Check whether output is written as raw bytes, displayed character values, or another representation.
- Supply input only when the program contains a comma; otherwise an interactive run may appear to pause for input unexpectedly.
- Keep the interpreter’s version and configuration with the source if another person must reproduce the result.
Compare interpreters before switching
When choosing between tools, compare the operating systems they support and how they are installed, then check whether each accepts files, direct source strings, or an interactive session. After that, compare runtime conventions rather than judging only by command-line appearance:
| Comparison | Questions |
|---|---|
| Cells | What width do cells use, and what happens on overflow or underflow? |
| Tape | How many cells are available, and does memory expand? |
| Pointer limits | What happens when the pointer moves left of the first cell or past the allocated area? |
| Brackets | Are unmatched pairs diagnosed before execution, during execution, or not at all? |
| I/O | Are input and output handled as bytes, characters, numbers, or another representation? |
| Newlines | Does text-mode line-ending translation occur on the target platform? |
No single invocation style makes two interpreters equivalent. Write down these settings with your program so a result can be reproduced instead of merely saying that it was run “in Brainfuck.”
Plan a program before typing symbols
Brainfuck becomes manageable when you design the tape layout first. Write down the role of each cell, then translate one operation at a time.
Choose a cell layout
For a text-output routine, you might reserve cell 0 as a loop counter, cell 1 as an output value, and later cells for input or temporary values. The language does not provide named variables, so a written layout prevents accidental reuse.
Trace a short section
Use a table with one row per instruction group:
| Instruction group | Pointer | Cell values | Expected effect |
|---|---|---|---|
+++ |
0 | cell 0 = 3 | Create a loop count. |
>++ |
1 | cell 1 increases by 2 | Update the destination cell. |
<- |
0 | cell 0 decreases by 1 | Move toward loop termination. |
For a longer program, record the value before and after every bracketed section. This catches pointer mistakes that are difficult to infer from a single unexpected character.
Build incrementally
- Make one cell change and output it.
- Add pointer movement and output again.
- Add a loop whose counter you can calculate by hand.
- Add input only after the non-input path works.
- Change one instruction group at a time and rerun.
Keep a reproducible test case
For each experiment, save the exact source, the input supplied, the interpreter name and options, and the observed output. A test that prints a visible character is easier to compare than one that emits a control value. When testing input, use a known short string and note whether its terminating newline was included; line-ending translation can make otherwise identical tests appear different.
Portability: why the same source can behave differently
The eight-command syntax is small, but it does not define every runtime detail. Before comparing output from two interpreters, check these properties:
| Property | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cell width | Are cells one byte, a wider integer, or configurable? | The same number of plus signs can produce different values and characters. |
| Overflow and underflow | Does a value wrap, saturate, or raise an error at a boundary? | Loops and arithmetic that rely on wraparound may stop or run differently. |
| Tape size | How many cells exist? | A program that assumes at least 30,000 cells may not fit a smaller implementation. |
| Pointer boundaries | What happens when < moves left from the first cell or > moves beyond the allocated tape? |
The interpreter might expand memory, reject the move, wrap the pointer, or terminate. |
| Bracket validation | Are unmatched brackets rejected before execution or handled during a run? | An error location and failure timing can differ substantially. |
| Input | What is the input unit, and what value represents end of file? | A comma may block, receive a sentinel, or leave a cell unchanged. |
| Output | Are cell values emitted as bytes, characters, numbers, or another device format? | The same numeric cell value may look different to the reader. |
| Line endings | How are newline characters read and written on the target platform? | Text-mode translation can change input length or displayed output. |
The implementor guidance for Brainfuck discusses platform line-ending differences and recommends consistent default behavior for line-ending input and output. A separate community proposal also notes variation in cell size, memory layout, and sometimes the instruction set; its authors explicitly state that it is not the language specification. Treat both as portability guidance, not as a universal runtime contract.
Portability-safe habits
- Do not assume that a cell is exactly eight bits just because a familiar interpreter uses bytes.
- Do not depend on wrapping from zero to a maximum value unless the interpreter documents that behavior.
- Keep the pointer within clearly allocated cells instead of testing boundary behavior accidentally.
- Use explicit, documented input and output conventions when sharing examples.
- When reporting a bug, include the source, input, platform, interpreter, and relevant cell or tape settings.
Troubleshoot a program that fails
The interpreter reports an unmatched bracket
- Count opening and closing brackets and pair them from the inside out.
- Check that a comment did not accidentally contain an extra bracket.
- Temporarily remove one loop at a time and run the remaining source.
- Use an interpreter’s bracket diagnostics if available; do not assume every implementation validates brackets the same way.
The program runs forever
Most infinite loops leave their controlling cell nonzero. Trace the current cell at every pass and confirm that the loop body reaches the intended decrement or input operation. Also check that pointer movement did not place the decrement on a different cell.

The output is blank or unreadable
- Verify that the dot is reached and that the pointer is on the cell you intended.
- Calculate the numeric value at that point; a value may be a control character rather than a visible letter.
- Check whether the interpreter displays raw bytes or numeric values.
- Check newline and encoding behavior if the output appears correct except for line breaks or accented text.
Input appears to hang
A comma waits for input in many interpreters. Provide the expected input, then check how the interpreter signals end of file. If the program needs several bytes, confirm that each comma is reached and that pointer movement selects the intended destination cell.
The pointer leaves the tape
Determine whether the selected implementation grows its tape, wraps the pointer, rejects the move, or terminates. A source that works only because of one boundary policy is not portable. Move the pointer back into a known cell and test a smaller fragment before continuing.
The same file works in one interpreter but not another
Compare cell width, overflow, tape allocation, pointer boundaries, bracket handling, input and output representation, and line-ending treatment before changing the source. A portability fix should target the documented difference rather than relying on an undocumented assumption.

Do I need a compiler?
No compiler is required for the basic workflow. Brainfuck source is text supplied to an interpreter. Some projects may offer compilation or optimization, but the execution modes documented for a C implementation include running files, evaluating code directly, and opening an interactive console.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I put comments in a Brainfuck file?
Ignored characters allow letters, spaces, and many punctuation marks to appear in the file. However, the eight command characters are never comments: they execute wherever they occur. Keep explanatory text free of those symbols unless you intentionally want the instructions.
Why does my program print a number instead of a letter?
The dot outputs the current cell’s value, while the interpreter decides how that value is represented. One tool may emit a raw byte or character; another may display a numeric value. Check its output documentation before changing the program.
What does a comma read?
A comma reads an input unit into the current cell. The unit can be byte-oriented, and end-of-file behavior varies. Confirm what the interpreter does at end of input, especially when a program contains several commas.
Why does [-] sometimes behave differently?
Its intended action is to decrement a nonzero cell until it reaches zero. If the cell is already zero, the loop is skipped. Behavior when decrementing at the numeric minimum depends on cell width and underflow rules, so verify those rules before relying on wraparound.
Is .b mandatory?
No. The language reference calls .b an ideal extension, but interpreters can expect other names. Use the extension and file conventions documented by your selected tool.

How much tape does Brainfuck provide?
The reference describes at least 30,000 initially zero cells with the pointer at the leftmost cell. Implementations can differ in tape size, layout, expansion, and boundary behavior, so check the interpreter rather than assuming a universal limit.
Why do line breaks change between systems?
Operating systems represent line endings differently, and text-mode input or output may translate them. Consistent line-ending settings and an interpreter’s documented defaults are important when a program reads or prints newline characters.
What is the safest way to learn?
Start with a one-cell change, output it, then add pointer movement, a calculable loop, and input. Trace the pointer and cell values on paper, change one instruction group at a time, and reduce any failure to the smallest fragment that still reproduces it.
A practical beginner workflow
- Pick one interpreter and read its installation and invocation instructions.
- Create a plain-text file named with the extension expected by that tool, such as
first.b. - Paste the
Aexample and run it in file mode. - Record the output representation and whether the interpreter wraps cell values.
- Try
,.with one known input character. - Write a two- or three-cell layout on paper before adding a loop.
- Trace pointer and cell values for every loop pass.
- When a result is surprising, reduce the source to the smallest failing fragment and test that fragment interactively or as a separate file.
With this workflow, Brainfuck’s lack of named variables becomes a bookkeeping challenge rather than a mystery. The syntax remains portable only when the runtime assumptions—cells, tape, boundaries, input, output, and line endings—are made explicit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the eight Brainfuck commands?
The commands are >, <, +, -, ., ,, [, and ]. They move the pointer, change the current cell, perform input or output, and control loops.
How do I run a Brainfuck file?
Save the source as plain text, then use the file-execution command documented by your interpreter. The executable name, options, and accepted extensions are implementation-specific.
Why does the same Brainfuck source differ between interpreters?
Cell width, overflow, tape size, pointer boundaries, bracket validation, input, output, and line-ending behavior can vary. Compare those settings before changing the source.
Can Brainfuck programs read input?
Yes. The comma command reads an input unit into the current cell. Check the interpreter’s input unit and end-of-file behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Trace the loop’s controlling cell and pointer on every pass. Confirm that the loop body changes the intended cell toward zero and that pointer movement has not redirected the decrement.
Are comments supported?
Characters outside the eight commands are ignored by the reference language, so letters and spaces can document code. Never place an instruction character in a comment unless you want it executed.
The Bottom Line
To write and run Brainfuck, model the tape and pointer, save plain-text source, and execute it with an interpreter that documents its file, direct-code, or interactive mode. Start with tiny traced programs, pair every bracket, and record cell, tape, input, output, and newline conventions. Those habits let you diagnose failures and explain differences between interpreters without relying on hidden runtime assumptions.
