Write the brief as a compact visual specification, not a string of aesthetic adjectives. State the image’s purpose, subject and action, setting, visual treatment, composition, and the elements that must stay unchanged. For a series, separate those shared rules from the scene-specific changes. This gives an image model clearer decisions to follow and gives your team a repeatable way to judge each result.
What an art-direction brief does
An art-direction brief translates an idea into observable image decisions. It tells a generator what the picture is for, what appears in it, how the scene is arranged, how it should look, and which details are non-negotiable. The same document also gives people a reference when they request revisions or compare several outputs.
A brief cannot force a model to reproduce every detail perfectly. Official guidance from OpenAI Academy, OpenAI’s image-prompting documentation, Midjourney’s reference documentation, and Adobe’s Firefly guidance describes clearer prompts and controlled edits, but does not establish a numerical improvement in consistency. Treat the brief as a coordination and quality-control tool, not a guarantee.

Why adjectives alone fail
Words such as “cinematic,” “premium,” or “dreamy” can suggest a direction, but they leave the model to invent the subject, camera position, palette, and lighting. Two prompts containing the same mood words can produce unrelated compositions. Concrete instructions—“three-quarter view, subject on the right third, warm window light from camera left, muted terracotta and cream”—give the model decisions it can render.

OpenAI Academy says that in most cases one to three clear sentences are enough for an image prompt. That is provider guidance, not a universal length limit. A short prompt can work for a simple one-off image; a campaign or edit usually needs a structured brief with explicit invariants.
The six parts every brief should contain
1. Purpose and audience
Begin with where the image will appear and what the viewer should understand. A homepage hero, a product-detail page, a social post, and an editorial illustration may depict the same subject but require different crops, empty space, and levels of polish.
- Placement: State the channel or layout, such as a website hero, article header, presentation slide, or square social tile.
- Communication goal: Explain the idea the image must convey—calm onboarding, technical reliability, outdoor adventure, or another concrete message.
- Audience: Note who will see it when age, expertise, culture, or context affects the visual choices.
- Practical requirement: Mention whether the design needs copy space, a transparent subject cutout, a particular crop, or room for a logo supplied separately.
Purpose establishes the required polish and composition before you describe style. Do not ask the model to render a logo or long copy unless the chosen tool is documented to handle that requirement reliably; plan to add brand typography in layout software when necessary.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute2. Subject and action
Name the focal subject and describe what it is doing. Include the number of subjects, their relationship, orientation, age or material when relevant, and the visual evidence of the action. “A cyclist braking on wet pavement” is more useful than “an energetic sports scene.”
- Identify the primary subject first.
- Describe the action with a visible verb: pouring, assembling, turning, looking toward, or moving through.
- Add only attributes that affect recognition or the story, such as clothing color, product model, recurring character features, or a distinctive prop.
- State exclusions when a common failure would be costly, such as “no extra people” or “hands remain outside the frame.”
3. Setting and composition
Specify the location or backdrop, then describe relationships within the frame. Composition instructions can include foreground and background, viewpoint, camera distance, orientation, subject placement, depth of field, and the direction of movement.
Use spatial language that can be checked in the output: “subject centered with a clear margin above the head,” “product in the lower-left foreground,” or “a shallow path leads from the bottom edge to the doorway.” If text will be placed later, say where clean negative space is required and keep important details out of that area.
4. Visual direction
Describe the visual treatment in concrete terms. Choose a medium or rendering approach, a restrained palette, surface qualities, contrast, and a lighting character. A useful direction might specify “editorial gouache with visible paper grain, desaturated teal and warm ochre, soft overcast light, moderate contrast.”

- Medium or treatment: photography, ink illustration, clay render, collage, watercolor, or another recognizable approach.
- Palette: name a small group of colors and indicate dominant versus accent colors.
- Texture and material: identify paper grain, brushed metal, matte plastic, fabric weave, or a clean digital surface when it matters.
- Lighting: state source, direction, softness, color temperature, and shadow character.
- Contrast and atmosphere: specify whether the image is crisp and high-contrast, hazy and low-contrast, flatly lit, or deeply dimensional.
“Inspired by” should refer to qualities rather than asking for a living artist’s exact signature. Explain which qualities to borrow—limited palette, loose brushwork, hard-edged shadows—so the instruction remains useful without relying on a name as a shortcut.
5. Constraints and invariants
Invariants are the details that must survive across a set or an edit. Write them as an explicit list instead of assuming that the model will infer them from the overall mood.
- Recurring character appearance, clothing, accessories, and proportions.
- Product geometry, color, logo position supplied in an approved asset, or interface layout.
- Palette, medium, line quality, texture, lighting direction, and contrast range.
- Framing rules, horizon height, camera angle, and the amount of negative space.
- Background architecture, season, time of day, or other continuity elements.
For an edit, separate the requested change from the preservation list: “Replace the background with a rainy street. Keep the subject’s pose, jacket, face, camera angle, palette, and light direction unchanged.” OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance specifically recommends identifying what must remain unchanged.
6. Output intent
Finish with the deliverable requirements: aspect ratio or crop, orientation, transparent or solid background, intended resolution, and whether text or layout elements are required. Use the selected platform’s documented controls for these properties when available; prose does not replace a setting or parameter that the tool exposes directly.

Copy the following structure into a project document. Replace the bracketed fields; keep the labels when sharing the brief so reviewers can see which decisions are fixed and which are intentionally changing.
Purpose/audience: [where the image will appear; what it should communicate; who will see it]
Scene: [subject(s), visible action, setting, important props]
Composition: [orientation, framing, viewpoint, placement, foreground/background, copy space]
Visual direction: [medium or treatment, palette, texture, lighting, contrast]
References: [Image 1: role and qualities to use; Image 2: role and qualities to use]
Keep consistent: [recurring features, palette, medium, lighting, layout, background, other invariants]
Change for this image: [scene-specific subject, action, location, or prop]
Output: [format, crop, orientation, transparency, text or layout requirements]
This is a practical synthesis of provider guidance, not a required vendor format. For a simple image, combine the fields into one to three clear sentences. For a series or a complex edit, retain the headings so that every decision is visible.
How to brief a consistent series
Create a shared visual system first
Write one “series rules” block before describing individual scenes. Repeat the stable rules in every production prompt or make the shared block a locked prefix in your workflow. Include:
Rank #3
- 【Large size】:Measuring 800 x 300 mm/ 31. 5×12 inches, which is wider and taller than others. Large mouse pad can perfectly fit your keyboard and mouse of any size, and there is also ample space for peripherals such as phones, tablets, etc.
- 【LED backlight mouse pad】:Blade Hawks RGB mouse pad provides 7 static modes and 7 dynamic modes will give you the options you are looking for. Power-off memory function remembers the last lighting mode you selected. The super glow fiber Chroma will give you a colorful gaming setup that you want.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
- Medium and rendering behavior.
- Core palette, with dominant and accent colors.
- Lighting direction, softness, and color temperature.
- Framing, camera height, lens impression, and safe areas for copy.
- Recurring characters, products, props, or architectural features.
- Texture, contrast, and background treatment.
Then write a separate scene block for what changes. Do not let a new location or action silently alter the medium, palette, or camera rules.
Example: shared rules and three scenes
| Brief layer | Example instruction |
|---|---|
| Shared visual system | Editorial gouache on lightly textured paper; muted teal, cream, and burnt orange; soft north-window light from the left; moderate contrast; 4:5 portrait framing; keep the upper-right quarter relatively quiet for headline text. |
| Scene 1 | A product designer sketches a mobile interface at a wooden desk, viewed from a slight overhead angle; one orange pencil and a teal notebook are visible. |
| Scene 2 | The same designer presents the finished screen to a colleague in a bright studio; retain the palette, paper texture, left-side light, and 4:5 framing. |
| Scene 3 | A close view of the phone on the desk beside the notebook; change only the subject scale and crop while preserving the visual system and copy-safe upper-right area. |
The table separates what should remain stable from what changes. In production, repeat the invariants in the actual prompt or edit instruction; do not rely on a model remembering an earlier image unless the platform documents a persistent context mechanism.
Define continuity tests
Before generating the set, decide what a reviewer will compare. A useful test asks whether the outputs share the same medium, palette, light direction, framing logic, recurring features, and required project elements. If one image fails, identify the failed rule rather than replacing the entire brief with more mood words.
Using reference images without creating confusion
Assign every reference a role
Multiple images are easier to control when each has one declared job. Label them by index and explain the relationship:
- Image 1 — edit target: the image whose subject or composition should be preserved.
- Image 2 — style reference: contributes palette, medium, texture, or lighting qualities.
- Image 3 — layout reference: contributes framing or spatial arrangement only.
OpenAI Academy advises explaining how multiple references relate and notes that a small set is usually easier to manage than a large one. If two references conflict, state which one controls each property: “Use Image 1 for the person and pose; use Image 2 only for color and brush texture.”
Understand platform-specific reference controls
Do not assume that “reference image” means the same thing in every tool.
| Platform documentation describes | What your brief should clarify |
|---|---|
| Midjourney style references | Use them for qualities such as color, medium, texture, or lighting. The text prompt must still describe everything you want in the final image. |
| Midjourney image prompts | State which visual content, composition, or subject relationship the image prompt should inform, rather than expecting it to define the entire scene. |
| Adobe Firefly style reference images | Specify whether the reference contributes style, theme, or mood, and keep the written scene description explicit. |
| Other tools | Consult the current documentation for supported reference roles, strength controls, aspect-ratio settings, and editing behavior. Availability and labels vary by platform and can change. |
These are documented feature distinctions, not a controlled comparison of output quality. A tool that accepts a reference image may still interpret it differently from another tool.

A controlled generation and revision workflow
- Write the base brief. Fill in purpose, scene, composition, visual direction, invariants, and output intent before opening the generator.
- Prepare and label references. Keep the set small. Name each file or attachment by role and state what it contributes.
- Apply platform controls. Set the documented aspect ratio, image-reference mode, style-reference control, edit mask, or other relevant option. Do not try to encode a setting solely in adjectives.
- Generate a first pass. Judge it against the brief, not against an unrelated ideal. Record which rule failed: subject, action, palette, lighting, framing, or required element.
- Change one thing at a time. Ask for a focused correction and repeat the preservation list. For example: “Move the subject 10 percent left; keep the crop, palette, light direction, paper texture, and facial expression unchanged.”
- Review with a checklist. Compare the result with the series rules and mark each invariant as pass, revise, or not applicable.
- Save the winning specification. Store the final prompt, references, settings, model or tool version if shown, and the selected output together so another person can reproduce the decision.
OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance recommends changing one thing at a time and identifying what should remain unchanged during edits. That discipline makes failures diagnosable: if the palette changes after a camera correction, you know which revision introduced the drift.
Quality-control checklist
Use this checklist before approving an image or moving to the next scene:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Purpose: Does the crop and empty space support the actual placement?

Troubleshooting common brief failures
The image has the right mood but the wrong scene
Replace abstract mood language with a subject-action-setting sentence. Name what is in the frame, what it is doing, and where it is. Add viewpoint and placement if the composition matters.
Each image looks like it came from a different campaign
Move the stable rules into a shared visual-system block. Repeat the palette, medium, lighting, framing, texture, and recurring features in every prompt or edit. Describe the new scene separately so it cannot accidentally redefine the style.
A style reference overwhelms the subject
Assign the reference a narrower role: “Use Image 2 only for paper texture and muted colors.” Use the platform’s documented style-reference control when available, and describe the desired subject and composition in text.
An edit fixes one detail but breaks three others
Make the request surgical. State the single change first, then list the elements to preserve. If the tool supports masked or localized editing, use that documented control rather than asking for a full regeneration.
Text or layout is unreliable
Describe the required copy area and overall placement, but treat exact typography as a layout task unless the tool’s current documentation supports your needed text workflow. Generate a clean composition with deliberate negative space, then add final type in the production design tool.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Too many references create contradictory results
Reduce the set and give each remaining image one role. If a reference contributes both layout and style, split those instructions explicitly so the model knows which qualities to borrow and which to ignore.
How short should the prompt be?
Use the shortest brief that removes meaningful ambiguity. OpenAI Academy’s one-to-three-sentence advice works well for a straightforward image with few constraints. A campaign brief can be longer because it contains decisions the model and the human team both need. Length itself is not the goal; observable requirements are.
A useful test is to remove each sentence and ask whether the expected output could change. If not, delete it. If a sentence contains several unrelated requirements, split it into labeled fields so a reviewer can verify each one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat consistency a brief can—and cannot—provide
A strong brief improves clarity, makes differences easier to evaluate, and gives revisions a controlled vocabulary. It does not establish pixel-level identity across generations, and the official guidance cited here does not publish a percentage showing how much consistency improves. Results also depend on the chosen model, reference handling, edit mode, settings, and the ambiguity of the source material.
For that reason, define an acceptable range rather than demanding impossible sameness. A series may require the same palette, lighting character, and framing while allowing natural variation in pose, texture, or background detail. Put that tolerance in the “Keep consistent” and “Change for this image” fields.
A complete worked brief
The following example shows how the parts fit together for a three-image article package:
Purpose/audience: Three 4:5 editorial illustrations for a general-tech article explaining secure account setup. They should feel calm and approachable to readers who are not security specialists. Leave the upper-right quarter clear for headlines.
Scene: Image 1 shows a person checking a security setting on a laptop at a kitchen table. Image 2 shows the same person adding a phone for account verification. Image 3 shows a close view of the laptop and phone beside a small notebook.
Composition: Portrait 4:5 framing, eye-level or slight three-quarter viewpoint, main action in the left two-thirds, clear negative space in the upper-right quarter, no visible brand logos or readable interface copy.
Visual direction: Editorial gouache on lightly textured paper, muted teal and cream with burnt-orange accents, soft window light from camera left, gentle shadows, moderate contrast, restrained detail.
References: Image 1: edit target for the person’s clothing and pose. Image 2: style reference for palette and paper texture only. Do not copy Image 2’s composition.
Keep consistent: Same person, teal overshirt, cream background family, left-side soft light, gouache treatment, paper texture, portrait crop, and upper-right copy-safe area.
Change for this image: Vary the action and supporting props as specified for each scene; preserve all shared rules.
Output: High-resolution 4:5 portrait images with no added typography and no recognizable third-party logos.
Notice that the brief names purpose, action, setting, composition, style, references, invariants, scene changes, and output requirements. A generator can still make mistakes; the document gives the team a precise way to identify and correct them.
