Good prompt writing means telling an AI model what you want, giving it the context it needs, and specifying the kind of response that would be useful. Start with the task, add relevant background, and state any important audience, tone, or format requirements. Then review the response and adjust the prompt where it missed the mark.

What is prompt writing?

A prompt is the input or instruction that starts an interaction with an AI model or guides its response. Prompt writing is the practice of shaping that input so the model can better understand the result you want. The broader term prompt engineering refers to designing and refining prompts to achieve a desired outcome.

A prompt does not need special terminology or a complicated structure. A short, direct request can work well when the task is simple. More detail helps when the answer depends on background information, a particular audience, or a specific format.

What should a good prompt include?

Use the parts that matter for your request; not every prompt needs every element.

  • Task: Say what the model should do, such as explain, summarize, compare, or draft.
  • Context: Provide relevant facts, source material, or background that could change the answer.
  • Audience and tone: Identify who the response is for and how it should sound when that matters.
  • Output: Specify a useful format, length, or structure, such as a short paragraph, a checklist, or a table.
  • Constraints: State important inclusions, exclusions, or boundaries.

Clear, specific instructions reduce ambiguity. OpenAI recommends making requests clear and providing relevant context in its API prompt-engineering guidance and ChatGPT prompt-writing guidance.

How to write a prompt step by step

  1. Describe the action. Begin with a direct instruction. For example, ask the model to summarize a passage rather than simply saying you have a passage to share.
  2. Add only relevant context. Include the details or source material needed to complete the task. If the answer depends on a particular reader or situation, say so.
  3. Separate source material from instructions. Label supplied content with a heading or set it apart with quotation marks. This makes it clearer which text the model should analyze and which text tells it what to do, an approach described in OpenAI’s API guidance.
  4. Specify the response you need. Name the audience, tone, format, or length when those choices matter. If you do not care about a particular detail, there is no need to constrain it.
  5. Check the answer against your goal. Look for the specific mismatch—such as missing context, the wrong format, or an overly broad explanation—and revise the prompt accordingly.

A beginner prompt pattern

This flexible pattern combines the main elements without requiring a fixed formula. Delete any line that is unnecessary for your task.

Task: [the action you want the model to take]
Context: [relevant background or source material]
Audience and tone: [who will use the answer and how it should sound]
Output: [format, length, or structure]
Constraints: [important inclusions, exclusions, or boundaries]

For a simple request, a task and a little context may be enough. Add detail when it resolves a real ambiguity; a longer prompt is not automatically a better one.

When examples help

If you need a response in a particular style or structure, a short example can demonstrate what you mean more clearly than a verbal description. Anthropic’s Claude prompting guidance recommends well-crafted examples for improving accuracy and consistency with its models. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a guarantee that examples will produce the same improvement in every AI system.

Use an example when the desired pattern is hard to describe, and make sure it represents the result you actually want. For a straightforward task with clear instructions, an example may add unnecessary complexity.

How to improve a prompt after the first response

Treat the first response as a draft to evaluate, not proof that your prompt was perfect. OpenAI’s ChatGPT guidance recommends reviewing the result and refining the request.

  1. If the answer is too broad, add the missing context or clarify the audience and scope.
  2. If the format is wrong, name the format you want or show a concise example.
  3. If the model misunderstood supplied material, separate that material from your instructions and identify the relevant part.
  4. If a requirement was missed, state it directly and revise the prompt to address that specific gap.

Change the prompt in response to what went wrong, then try again. This makes each revision purposeful instead of adding detail at random.

Do consumer chat and API prompts need different approaches?

The same basics apply in both settings: state the task clearly, provide relevant context, and describe the desired response. In a one-off chat, a natural-language request may be sufficient. For repeatable API tasks, explicitly separating instructions from input material and defining a consistent output structure can make the prompt easier to reuse. OpenAI discusses those more structured considerations in its API guidance.
