A Slack slash command is an HTTP integration: Slack sends an application/x-www-form-urlencoded POST to your Flask route, your route verifies the request with the app’s signing secret, reads the command text, and acknowledges within 3,000 milliseconds. Return a quick response for simple work; for anything slower, acknowledge first and send the result later through Slack’s response_url.
This guide builds that flow with Flask, covers signature verification, payload handling, response visibility, delayed work, and the failure modes that produce operation_timeout.
How a Flask slash command works
A slash command belongs to a Slack app. When a user types a command such as /lookup server-status, Slack sends an HTTP POST to the Request URL configured for that command. Your Flask route is the public HTTPS endpoint that receives it.
- The user enters the command and optional arguments in Slack.
- Slack sends a form-encoded POST containing the command, text, IDs, and a response URL.
- Flask reads the raw request body and verifies Slack’s signature before trusting any fields.
- Your route acknowledges the request with HTTP 200 within 3,000 milliseconds.
- The route either includes an immediate response or performs slow work asynchronously and posts the result to the supplied response URL.
Slash commands are not namespaced. Choose a distinctive command name: if another installed app uses the same name, Slack can route the name according to installation precedence, with the most recently installed app potentially taking the command.

Prerequisites and project setup
What you need
- A Slack app installed in the workspace where you will test the command.
- A deployed Flask endpoint reachable over HTTPS with a publicly verifiable certificate.
- Python 3 and a virtual environment.
- The app’s signing secret, stored outside source control.
Slack’s command configuration must point to the exact HTTPS route that Flask exposes. A localhost-only route cannot receive requests from Slack unless it is made reachable through a secure public development endpoint.
Create an isolated Python environment
python -m venv .venv
# macOS/Linux
source .venv/bin/activate
# Windows PowerShell
.venvScriptsActivate.ps1
pip install Flask slack-sdk
Flask provides the HTTP server and request object. The official Python Slack SDK supplies helpers such as SignatureVerifier and WebhookClient. Add the SDK only if you want those helpers; a low-level Flask route can also implement the HMAC check directly. If your delayed worker posts with the popular requests library, install it separately with pip install requests.
Create and configure the Slack app
- In Slack’s app configuration, create a new app for the target workspace.
- Open Slash Commands and add a command, for example
/lookupor/weather. - Set the command’s Request URL to your deployed route, such as
https://your-domain.example/slack/commands. - Save the command and install or reinstall the app in the workspace.
- Copy the app’s signing secret into an environment variable on the Flask server.
Do not put the signing secret in a repository, client-side JavaScript, log message, or error response. Rotate it through your deployment secret manager when necessary.
Verify Slack before parsing the form
Every command request includes X-Slack-Signature and X-Slack-Request-Timestamp headers. Slack’s signing secret replaces the older verification-token approach. Verification must use the exact raw body that Slack sent, not a re-serialized version of parsed fields.
Verification order
- Read
request.get_data()before accessingrequest.form. - Read the timestamp header and reject requests outside a short replay window. Five minutes is a common policy; choose and document the window used by your service.
- Build the versioned base string in the form
v0:{timestamp}:{raw_body}. - Compute HMAC-SHA256 with the signing secret and prefix the hexadecimal digest with
v0=. - Compare the computed value with
X-Slack-Signatureusing a constant-time comparison. - Only after all checks pass, parse
request.formand perform application work.
The official SDK’s verifier performs these checks for you, but its exact method signature can vary by installed SDK version. Check the reference for the version in your environment.

Why the raw body matters
Form parsing can normalize encoding, ordering, or escaping. If you calculate the digest from reconstructed form data instead of the original bytes, a legitimate request can fail verification, while accepting a noncanonical body can weaken your security boundary.
Understand the slash-command payload
Slack normally sends application/x-www-form-urlencoded data. Treat text as untrusted user input: validate its syntax, length, and permitted values before using it in a query or command.
| Field | Purpose | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
command |
The command name, such as /lookup. |
Route the request when one endpoint serves several commands, and log the selected command. |
text |
Everything typed after the command. | Parse as arguments or a query. An absent value should be treated as an empty string. |
response_url |
A Slack endpoint for follow-up responses. | Use it for delayed results after the initial acknowledgement. |
trigger_id |
An identifier associated with the interaction. | Retain it only when a later Slack interaction requires it. |
user_id |
The invoking user’s stable ID. | Use it for authorization and auditing instead of mutable display names. |
team_id |
The workspace ID. | Use it to select workspace configuration or enforce workspace allowlists. |
channel_id |
The conversation ID. | Use it for authorization, routing, and audit records. |
user_name |
A legacy display-name value that may be present. | Do not use it as a stable identity when user_id is available. |
IDs remain stable while display names can change. For sensitive operations, authorize by workspace, user, channel, or a combination of those IDs.
Minimal verified Flask route
The following route verifies the request before reading the form and returns a private response. It deliberately keeps the acknowledgement path short.
import os
from flask import Flask, jsonify, request
from slack_sdk.signature import SignatureVerifier
app = Flask(__name__)
verifier = SignatureVerifier(
signing_secret=os.environ['SLACK_SIGNING_SECRET']
)
@app.post('/slack/commands')
def command():
# Keep the exact bytes for signature verification.
raw_body = request.get_data()
if not verifier.is_valid_request(raw_body, request.headers):
return 'invalid request', 401
text = request.form.get('text', '').strip()
command_name = request.form.get('command', '')
user_id = request.form.get('user_id', '')
team_id = request.form.get('team_id', '')
channel_id = request.form.get('channel_id', '')
# Apply your own authorization and argument validation here.
if not text:
return jsonify(text='Usage: /lookup <query>'), 200
return jsonify(text=f'{command_name} received: {text}'), 200
The verifier call shown is illustrative; confirm the method available in the Slack SDK version you installed. The important properties are invariant: use the raw body, reject stale or invalid requests, and return HTTP 200 promptly.

Meet Slack’s three-second acknowledgement deadline
Slack requires confirmation within 3,000 milliseconds of sending the request. If your route waits for a network call, database query, expensive computation, or a cold external service, users can see operation_timeout even when the eventual work succeeds.
Fast path for simple commands
Validate the signature and arguments, compute the small result, and return it directly. An empty HTTP 200 is also an acknowledgement, although a short confirmation is more useful when the command is asynchronous.
Queue slow work after acknowledgement
For slow operations, capture the validated fields you need, enqueue a job, and return immediately. A production queue or task runner is safer than doing substantial work in Flask’s request thread. The worker can then POST JSON to the request’s response_url.
import threading
import requests
from flask import jsonify, request
def finish_lookup(response_url, text, user_id):
# Replace this demonstration worker with your task queue in production.
result = perform_slow_lookup(text, user_id)
requests.post(
response_url,
json={'response_type': 'in_channel', 'text': result},
timeout=10,
)
@app.post('/slack/commands')
def command_async():
if not verifier.is_valid_request(
request.get_data(), request.headers
):
return 'invalid request', 401
text = request.form.get('text', '').strip()
response_url = request.form.get('response_url', '')
user_id = request.form.get('user_id', '')
if not text:
return jsonify(text='Usage: /lookup <query>'), 200
threading.Thread(
target=finish_lookup,
args=(response_url, text, user_id),
daemon=True,
).start()
return jsonify(text='Working on it…'), 200
In real deployments, validate that the response URL is present, avoid logging it as a credential, and make the worker retry transient failures. A process-local background thread can disappear during a restart; use a durable queue when the result matters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose the response visibility
Plain text
Returning a string body with HTTP 200 is suitable for a short answer. JSON is preferable once you need explicit visibility or richer message formatting.

Ephemeral responses
Use JSON with response_type: 'ephemeral', or omit the field for the default private experience. Only the invoking user sees the response.
Channel-visible responses
Set response_type to in_channel when every participant should see the result. Decide this deliberately: a lookup containing private data should not be broadcast accidentally.
return jsonify(
response_type='in_channel',
text='The result is ready for the channel.'
), 200
Blocks and attachments can be included in the JSON response when your message needs structured formatting. Keep the initial response small enough to meet the acknowledgement deadline.

Delayed responses through response_url
Post a JSON object to the supplied response URL after the worker finishes. Slack’s archived Slash Commands API reference documents up to five responses through that URL within 30 minutes. Treat that as a limit for the command interaction, not as a guarantee that an arbitrary URL remains usable indefinitely.

| Concern | Hand-written Flask route | Bolt for Python |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP control | Direct access to Flask’s route, headers, raw body, status codes, and serialization. | Bolt owns more dispatch details while still running in a web framework adapter. |
| Verification | You call SignatureVerifier or implement the documented HMAC sequence yourself. |
Bolt handles the verification pipeline when configured with the signing secret. |
| Command handling | You read request.form and choose the route logic. |
A command listener receives a parsed command object. |
| Acknowledgement | You must return HTTP 200 within 3,000 milliseconds. | The listener provides ack() to make the acknowledgement explicit. |
| Follow-up messages | Post to response_url yourself or use WebhookClient. |
The framework provides respond() for follow-up responses. |
| Testing surface | Small dependency surface and straightforward Flask test-client tests. | Less plumbing code, but tests include Bolt dispatch and adapter configuration. |
Choose the low-level route when you need precise HTTP behavior or already have a Flask service. Choose Bolt when you want command registration, parsed payloads, ack(), and respond() with less framework code. In either case, keep the signing secret protected and acknowledge quickly.
Testing before installation-wide rollout
Exercise the happy path
- Invoke the command with valid text and confirm the route returns HTTP 200.
- Confirm the response is private or channel-visible exactly as intended.
- Verify that the worker posts a delayed result when the operation exceeds the request budget.
- Check logs for IDs such as
team_id,channel_id, anduser_id, but never log the signing secret.
Exercise rejection paths
- Change one byte in the body and confirm the signature check returns HTTP 401.
- Send a stale timestamp and confirm the request is rejected before application work.
- Omit
textand verify that the usage response is returned without an exception. - Try an unauthorized user or workspace ID and confirm the command is denied.
- Force a slow dependency and verify that the route acknowledges first instead of waiting.
Troubleshoot common failures
operation_timeout appears in Slack
The route did not acknowledge within 3,000 milliseconds. Move network calls, database work, and long computation behind a queue or worker. Also check server cold starts, DNS delays, TLS negotiation, and exceptions that prevent Flask from returning a response.

Ensure the server uses the signing secret for the same app that sent the request. Verify that request.get_data() is captured before form parsing, that the timestamp and signature headers are passed unchanged, and that the server clock is accurate enough for your replay window. Do not hash a reconstructed form string.
The command text is empty or incorrectly split
Read request.form.get('text', ''). Slack sends everything after the command in one field; your application must define its own grammar for spaces, quoting, flags, and missing arguments. Validate the resulting values before using them in downstream systems.
The delayed message never arrives
Confirm that the worker retained the original response_url, posted valid JSON, and completed within the documented response window. Check outbound firewall rules, HTTP status codes, and retry handling. Do not assume that returning the initial 200 response automatically sends a later result.
The command works in a channel but not in a thread
Custom slash commands do not run in message threads. Document the supported conversation context and provide an alternative workflow if thread-based interaction is required.
