A fighting-game movie works for newcomers when it gives them a clear viewpoint, an understandable goal, and immediate stakes before demanding franchise knowledge. Treat each fight as a story scene that changes a relationship, plan, power balance, or self-understanding. Keep recognizable fighters, moves, costumes, and finishing techniques, but make their meaning readable through behavior and choices rather than name recognition.

The following method adapts lessons from official production and development commentary. Those materials offer creator guidance and examples, not a tested formula that guarantees audience comprehension.

Start with the question a newcomer is already asking

Someone who has never played the game needs an answer to three questions almost immediately: Who am I following? What does that person want right now? What happens if they fail? If the screenplay postpones those answers while it introduces factions, tournaments, mythologies, and move names, the audience has no reason to retain the information.

Warner Bros.’ official 2021 Mortal Kombat production notes describe creating Cole Young, a new character who could discover the fictional world alongside viewers unfamiliar with the game. The notes present him as a novice fighter learning his connection to a much larger conflict and entering training for stakes beyond his personal life. That is one adaptation choice, not a requirement for every film, but it demonstrates the value of a viewpoint character with legitimate questions.

Choose a point-of-view model

Model How it helps newcomers Main risk Use it when
Original newcomer protagonist The audience can learn rules, factions, and history as the character does. The new lead can displace the fighters fans came to see. The franchise world is dense or the canon has no obvious entry point.
Familiar fighter new to the conflict A known character supplies franchise identity while still asking basic questions. The script may assume knowledge the character would not reasonably have. The selected fighter has a personal reason to investigate the central threat.
Outsider ally A supporting character can ask for explanations without making the whole film an origin story. The supposed lead may become passive while experts do all the work. The established roster already has strong protagonists and the outsider has an active goal.

Whichever model you select, keep the viewpoint character’s personal objective active. A character who only asks questions becomes a tour guide. Give the questions consequences: finding a missing person, preventing a public attack, repaying a debt, protecting a team, or deciding whether to accept a dangerous power.

Set the first concrete objective

Within the opening movement, establish a target that can be visualized and measured. “Understand the realms” is vague; “reach the arena before the rival kills the hostage” is actionable. The objective should force the protagonist into the fighting world rather than waiting for a lecture about it.

  • Identify the protagonist’s ordinary problem before the supernatural or tournament problem arrives.
  • Show the inciting threat in a way that causes an irreversible choice.
  • State or demonstrate the immediate cost of failure.
  • Delay historical detail until it affects the next decision.

Deliver lore through action, not a glossary

Explain a rule when a character must use it, break it, or suffer its consequence. If a realm can be entered only under a particular condition, let the protagonist attempt entry and discover the cost. If a fighter’s power damages allies, show the team reacting before anyone names the ability. Viewers remember information attached to a choice better than information delivered as a catalogue.

Use a three-step exposition test

  1. Need: What does the audience need to know for the next scene to make sense?
  2. Demonstration: Can a behavior, image, or failed attempt reveal that fact?
  3. Consequence: What changes because the protagonist now knows it?

Remove any explanation that fails the third test. A fact with no consequence is usually background material that belongs later, or nowhere.

In a 2017 Capcom interview, Yoshinori Ono described helping newcomers understand why fighting games are interesting by linking characters through a story mode. He said, “Newcomers can enjoy the story while getting a chance to learn the fun and mechanics of fighting games.” The interview concerns Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, not film, so apply the idea as an analogy: let the viewer learn the rules while pursuing a meaningful objective. Do not turn a game-development comment into proof that one screenplay structure will work for every audience.

Let relationships carry history

A mentor can reveal a rule because the student is about to make a dangerous mistake. A rival can reveal a faction’s values by refusing an apparently easy victory. A sibling can expose a past betrayal through the way they fight. These exchanges communicate history and create present tension at the same time.

When dialogue must explain terminology, give the speaker a reason to say it now and the listener a reason to resist, misunderstand, or reinterpret it. Avoid characters telling one another facts they would obviously share merely to inform the audience.

Make the roster distinct without requiring recognition

Fighting-game casts often rely on immediate visual and behavioral signatures. Warner Bros.’ production notes emphasize recognizable characters, costumes, catchphrases, signature actions, and fatality imagery. Keep those identifiers, but attach each one to a readable want and a choice. A costume tells viewers who a fighter is in the franchise; a decision tells newcomers why that fighter matters in this story.

Create a one-page fighter card

Field Question to answer
Objective What does this fighter want before the final battle?
Fear or cost What will the fighter lose by pursuing that objective?
Combat identity What rhythm, range, weapon, or movement pattern makes the fighter legible on screen?
Contradiction What behavior conflicts with the fighter’s public image?
Relationship pressure Who can change this fighter’s plan or expose a weakness?
Arc turn What does the fighter understand or choose differently after a major bout?

Use the card to decide which franchise details earn screen time. A signature move belongs when it reveals temperament, solves a tactical problem, or creates a new risk. A catchphrase belongs when its repetition changes meaning. A fatality-style finish belongs when the film’s rating and tone support it and when the act of finishing someone changes the surviving characters.

Introduce fighters in conflict, not roll call

Instead of presenting six introductions in succession, reveal each important fighter while they pursue an objective that collides with someone else’s. One character steals equipment; another protects it; a third refuses to help because of a past betrayal. The audience learns names and alignments through cause and effect.

Design every fight to change the story

Simon McQuoid said in a Directors Guild of America Q&A dated May 24, 2026, that he wanted the characters and story to be felt more within the fights in Mortal Kombat II: “What I wanted was to feel the characters and the story even more within the fights.” The full discussion is available from the Directors Guild of America. Warner Bros.’ 2021 production notes likewise describe fights as places where personality and emotion emerge.

Build that principle into the outline. Before writing a bout, complete this sentence: “After this fight, ______ is different.” The blank might be a broken alliance, a revealed identity, a lost resource, a changed tactic, a public defeat, or a moral line crossed.

Use a five-part fight design

  1. Objective: Give each fighter a goal beyond winning, such as escaping, protecting someone, delaying an attack, proving loyalty, or obtaining information.
  2. Initial strategy: Show how personality shapes the first tactic. A patient fighter waits; an impulsive fighter presses; a protector gives up an opening.
  3. Reversal: Reveal a weakness, hidden ability, emotional trigger, or environmental constraint that invalidates the first plan.
  4. Choice: Force a decision that cannot be reduced to technique. A fighter may save an enemy, break an order, accept help, or risk a forbidden power.
  5. Consequence: Carry the result into the next scene. Change the mission, relationship, injury status, public perception, or understanding of the rules.

Give each major bout a different dramatic job

  • Recognition fight: Establish two distinct styles and reveal a personal connection.
  • Lesson fight: Let the protagonist discover why a familiar tactic fails.
  • Trust fight: Make allies coordinate under pressure or expose incompatible goals.
  • Cost fight: Let victory require an injury, sacrifice, or morally troubling action.
  • Reversal fight: Change who controls the larger conflict.
  • Final fight: Resolve the protagonist’s central choice, not only the tournament bracket.

If a bout leaves the plot and relationships exactly where they began, shorten it, combine it with another scene, or add a consequence that matters. More choreography cannot compensate for a missing dramatic turn.

Translate game mechanics into visible cause and effect

A film does not need to teach button inputs, frame data, or a complete move list. It does need to show why a tactic works now, what risk it creates, and how an opponent adapts.

Convert common mechanics

Game idea Film translation
Meter or stored energy Show a resource that must be built, protected, or spent. Make the audience see what is lost when it is used early.
Combo Present a chain of choices in which each hit limits the opponent’s next option. Interrupting the chain should have a visible reason.
Round system Use separate phases with altered information, terrain, or stakes rather than repeating the same exchange.
Special move Establish its trigger, effect, and drawback before the decisive use.
Tag-team switch Make the handoff express trust, abandonment, or tactical disagreement.
Finisher Treat the final technique as a character decision with tonal and moral consequences, not a mandatory button press.

Show the rule before explaining its name. If a fighter can redirect projectiles only while standing on marked ground, let a failed redirect damage the environment and force the fighter to reposition. The audience now understands the limitation without memorizing terminology.

Make power escalation intelligible

Escalation should add a new problem, not simply make the effects brighter. A stronger form might shorten the fighter’s lifespan, expose an ally, attract an enemy, or remove the ability to retreat. Establish the cost before the climax so the final activation is a decision rather than a surprise upgrade.

Choose an adaptation approach deliberately

There is no single required method for converting a fighting game into a feature. Compare the options against the audience and the specific franchise.

Decision axis Option A Option B Option C
Audience entry Original newcomer protagonist Familiar fighter new to the conflict Outsider ally within an established cast
Lore delivery Discovery through investigation Mentor, rival, or family relationship Rules revealed by consequences
Fight function Character revelation Tactical reversal Relationship or alliance change
Franchise fidelity Prioritize a coherent dramatic arc, then select signature details Anchor the plot in a recognized fighter’s established conflict Use the outsider to frame familiar iconography for first-time viewers
Tone and rating Set violence, humor, and spectacle around the new lead’s emotional journey Match the established fighter’s defining tone while clarifying stakes Use contrast between outsider reaction and the franchise’s heightened style

Tone is a design constraint, not a universal answer. The cited materials do not establish an ideal balance of violence, humor, or spectacle for all fighting-game films. Decide what your intended audience can emotionally process, then make the rating, jokes, injuries, and finishing techniques consistent with that decision.

Shape the feature around turning points

A conventional act structure can help you place discoveries, reversals, and escalation, but it is a tool rather than an authority. The official Save the Cat! books page presents its books as screenwriting guides addressing structure and story problems; it does not claim that its beat sheet is required for fighting-game adaptations.

Act one: orient and commit

  • Show the protagonist’s ordinary problem and competence level.
  • Introduce the threat through an event that demands a response.
  • Let the first fight reveal a rule and create a cost.
  • End the act with a commitment that closes the path back to ordinary life.

Act two: train, test, and fracture

  • Pair training with a personal disagreement so instruction changes a relationship.
  • Use intermediate fights to test different strategies, not to repeat the same victory pattern.
  • Reveal a contradiction in the mentor, rival, or tournament rules.
  • Break the team’s plan through a defeat, betrayal, injury, or public exposure.

Act three: choose and resolve

  • Make the final plan depend on what the protagonist learned through earlier failures.
  • Give allies objectives that intersect rather than leaving them as spectators.
  • Resolve the central moral or relational choice during the decisive exchange.
  • Show the world changed by the result, even if a sequel remains possible.

GDC’s listing for NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat Story Mode describes rendered movie footage equivalent to a full-length film in the relevant game story modes. That establishes that cinematic storytelling and fighting-game franchises can coexist inside games; it does not show that a game story mode transfers directly into a successful feature film. A movie still needs compression, point of view, and consequences designed for a continuous viewing experience.

Use training scenes to teach the audience and reveal character

Training should answer a dramatic question. Can the protagonist accept help? Will the mentor reveal the real rule? Can two rivals coordinate? A sequence of drills without conflict teaches neither the viewer nor the character much.

Give the exercise a visible constraint, then let the protagonist fail for a reason that matters. If the lesson is patience, make impatience cost an ally’s safety. If the lesson is trust, require a move that succeeds only when one fighter follows another’s timing. The audience learns the mechanic by watching a relationship change.

Use industry examples with the right limits

Commercial scale demonstrates that fighting-game audiences exist; it does not prove that a particular film will be accessible to newcomers. Keep those facts separate from your craft decisions.

Figure What it measures What it does not establish
More than 50 million Street Fighter series copies sold Capcom’s 2023 report records cumulative game-series sales. It is not a measure of film comprehension or newcomer satisfaction.
More than 2 million Street Fighter 6 units about one month after its June 2023 release Capcom reported the sales result as of July 7, 2023. It does not show that a movie can omit explanations.
US$2 million annual prize pool planned for Capcom’s 2023 Pro Tour Capcom’s 2023 report gives a planned esports prize-pool figure. It is neither a film budget nor an audience-accessibility statistic.
More than 80 minutes of cinematic scenes in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite story mode Capcom’s 2017 interview describes production scope. Runtime alone does not establish quality or audience response.
Rendered movie footage equivalent to a full-length film in recent Mortal Kombat story modes The GDC session listing describes the format without giving a numeric runtime. It does not prove that game cinematics can be used unchanged as a feature screenplay.

Capcom’s 2023 integrated report also describes Street Fighter 6 features intended to remove hurdles for new and longtime players, including Modern Controls and the single-player World Tour mode for learning moves while exploring the universe. Those are game-onboarding examples. In a film, the equivalent is a guided sequence of meaningful choices, not a menu of simplified inputs.

Revise with a newcomer clarity pass

After the first draft, read only the scenes in which unfamiliar characters, rules, or locations appear. Test whether each scene remains understandable without recognizing a name, costume, or move.

Track information scene by scene

  • Write down who wants what before the scene begins.
  • Mark the rule or fact the audience must understand before the next scene.
  • Underline the visual or behavioral evidence that communicates it.
  • Record the consequence that proves the information mattered.
  • Delete terminology that never changes a choice.

Diagnose common failures

Symptom Likely cause Revision
The opening names many factions but creates little urgency. Lore arrives before a personal objective. Move the inciting threat earlier and reveal factions through opposition.
Only one fighter has an emotional arc. The roster was designed as a catalogue. Give each major fighter a want, cost, and decision that affects the plot.
Fights are spectacular but interchangeable. Choreography was planned before dramatic function. Assign every bout a distinct objective, reversal, and consequence.
The protagonist wins because a new power appears. Mechanic and character choice were separated. Foreshadow the power’s rule and make activation carry a cost.
Fans recognize references, but newcomers cannot tell why they matter. Iconography replaced motivation. Pair each reference with a readable action, relationship, or decision.
The mentor explains rules that never affect the plot. Exposition was written independently of scene objectives. Move the explanation into a failed attempt or urgent tactical choice.

Check the ending without franchise knowledge

A newcomer should be able to state what the protagonist chose, whom that choice affected, and what changed in the world. If the climax makes sense only after consulting a character list or game chronology, simplify the causal chain. Preserve deeper references as rewards, but never make them the only explanation for the outcome.

Build a practical screenplay workflow

  1. Write the promise: In one sentence, define the protagonist, immediate goal, opposing force, and personal cost.
  2. Choose the entry model: Select an original lead, a familiar fighter new to the conflict, or an outsider ally, and state why that viewpoint is necessary.
  3. Map the rules: List only the game mechanics that will alter a character’s decision. For each, define its visible effect and limitation.
  4. Make fighter cards: Give every important competitor an objective, fear, combat identity, contradiction, relationship pressure, and arc turn.
  5. Outline consequence-driven fights: Write the “After this fight…” sentence for every major bout before choreographing it.
  6. Place lore at pressure points: Attach each explanation to a choice, failed attempt, relationship conflict, or new danger.
  7. Draft the emotional through-line: Track how the protagonist’s belief changes from the opening fight to the final decision.
  8. Run the newcomer pass: Remove assumptions that depend on game knowledge and verify that every required rule is shown before it matters.
  9. Run the roster pass: Cut or combine fighters who do not change the plan, reveal character, or create a necessary obstacle.
  10. Run the tone pass: Check that violence, humor, spectacle, and finishing techniques belong to the same intended audience experience.

Bottom line for writers

Begin with a person the audience can follow, not with the franchise encyclopedia. Give that person a goal that cannot wait, then reveal the world through choices and consequences. Preserve distinctive fighters by making their signatures express personality and strategy. Design every fight to alter the story, and teach mechanics only when the next decision depends on them. The official commentary from Warner Bros., Capcom, the DGA, and GDC supports these as useful craft principles and examples; none of it establishes a universal, measured formula for newcomer success. Your final test is simple: a first-time viewer should understand why each fighter is present, what each bout changes, and why the last choice could belong to no other character.
