The safest way to wombat-proof a garden is to match the response to the problem. Keep a familiar route open with a properly introduced swing gate when possible; use a monitored, wombat-safe mesh barrier only where an area truly must be protected; and treat any burrow under a building as a specialist wildlife-management problem. Never seal an active burrow, trap or relocate a wombat yourself, or assume a deterrent will work everywhere. Rules and permits differ between Australian states, so check with the relevant wildlife authority before disturbing a burrow or animal.

Identify what is actually causing the damage

Wombats commonly follow established trails between feeding and resting areas. If a fence blocks one of those runways, an animal may dig under it rather than take a new route. The first inspection should therefore record the path, not just the hole.

An established fence runway

Repeated openings at one section of fence, a worn track approaching the opening, or fresh soil on both sides usually indicate a regular passage point. In that situation, preserving the route with a swing gate can prevent the animal from repeatedly testing the rest of the fence.

Digging at the base of a fence

Fresh spoil, loose soil and a widening gap at the bottom call for a barrier that addresses digging. A skirt laid along the ground can spread the animal’s digging effort away from the protected side, but it must be checked frequently and repaired as soon as signs of digging appear.

Damage confined to a garden bed

If the animal is travelling around the property but entering one bed, protect that specific area rather than fencing every route. A local exclusion barrier is easier to monitor and leaves more of the familiar landscape available to the wombat.

A burrow beneath a shed, house or other structure

An entrance under a building is not an ordinary fencing job. A one-way exit arrangement may be appropriate, but incorrect installation can trap an animal inside. Obtain state-specific advice or use a qualified wildlife professional before altering the entrance.

Situation Primary approach What it protects against Main welfare concern
Known, regularly used fence breach Wombat swing gate at the breach Repeated fence damage while retaining passage Gate must be visible, pushable and maintained
Garden or structure that must remain wombat-free Heavy mesh exclusion with a ground skirt and monitoring Digging into a defined area Sharp edges, trapping gaps and unobserved excavation
Occasional visits to a bed or yard Temporary deterrent, such as a motion-activated sprinkler Short-term visits Results are not guaranteed; displacement can shift digging elsewhere
Burrow under a building Specialist one-way exit and reinforced entrance Re-entry after the animal leaves Do not block or seal an occupied burrow

Keep a shared route open with a wombat swing gate

New South Wales guidance describes swing gates at known breach points as a way to let wombats pass while the remainder of a fence continues to exclude some other animals. Victoria’s Conservation Regulator provides a gradual introduction method rather than simply hanging a gate across an active opening.

Introduce the gate gradually

  1. Locate the main openings. Identify two or three holes that are well used. Look for tracks and fresh disturbance rather than assuming the largest hole is the preferred route.
  2. Repair competing openings. Close nearby alternative breaches so the animal has a clear, predictable point of passage. Do not close an entrance that may be an active burrow without first obtaining wildlife advice.
  3. Install the frame first. Leave the frame in place while the animals become accustomed to its presence. The frame and mesh should be conspicuous, stable and free of sharp projections.
  4. Hang the gate partly open. This allows an animal to investigate and push through without encountering a sudden rigid obstruction.
  5. Let it hang vertically only after use is established. Once the route is being used through the frame, allow the gate to close under its own weight. Continue checking that it swings freely and does not bind against the ground.

Victoria gives a 60-centimetre-wide by 90-centimetre-tall gate as a design example, not a universal specification. South Australian guidance describes a different typical two-way opening, usually about 30–40 centimetres high and 40–50 centimetres wide. The dimensions are not interchangeable: site, gate purpose and state guidance determine the appropriate design.

Build for pushing, not trapping

  • Use visible mesh that is light enough for a wombat to push but sturdy enough to discourage other animals.
  • Keep the lower edge free of sharp wire and eliminate any ground-level gap that could catch a foot or leg.
  • Make sure hinges, latches and the frame cannot create a pinch point as the gate moves.
  • Inspect after heavy rain, ground movement or a new digging attempt. Ongoing maintenance is part of the gate design, not an optional finishing task.

Exclude digging with a monitored mesh barrier

When a garden bed, driveway edge or building perimeter genuinely must be protected, a physical barrier is more dependable than a scent or noise treatment. South Australian guidance describes a wire skirt at the base of an exclusion fence, with rocks optionally added to reinforce it. The skirt places the barrier along the ground where digging starts.

Choose a suitable mesh category

Welded or heavy steel wire mesh is the relevant product category for a rigid barrier or skirt. The official guidance reviewed does not set one universal wire gauge, mesh opening or installation depth for every garden. Select dimensions for the site and have the finished edge checked for protrusions, entrapment points and openings an animal could become wedged in.

Install and inspect the skirt

  1. Map the section to be protected, including corners, gates, drains and changes in ground level.
  2. Fix the mesh securely to the fence so the wombat cannot simply push beneath the fence line.
  3. Lay the skirt along the ground on the side where digging begins, using the site’s terrain to keep it flush.
  4. Use rocks only where they can reinforce the mesh without leaving unstable voids or sharp contact points.
  5. Walk the entire perimeter after installation and after storms. Look for lifted mesh, fresh soil, bent joins and new attempts at the corners.
  6. Repair promptly. South Australian guidance emphasizes monitoring fence condition, while the sooner a new dig is addressed, the less likely the animal is to enlarge it.

Understand the limits of other fence designs

Buried footings may cost more and can still be defeated if a wombat digs beneath them. South Australian guidance generally does not favor low electric wires because they can be difficult to maintain. Tasmania and New South Wales describe two electric wires at 15 and 30 centimetres above ground as an access-prevention measure in their respective guidance. Those are jurisdictional recommendations, not a universal garden specification; obtain local approval and follow the relevant state’s safety requirements before considering them.

Use deterrents as cautious, temporary measures

Tasmanian guidance says motion-activated sprinklers can work as a deterrent. New South Wales and Tasmania also describe organic fertilizer or predator-scent materials placed near burrows as possible temporary options. None is guaranteed in every setting, and a deterrent does not make an active burrow safe to block.

Motion-activated sprinklers

Position a sprinkler to cover the approach to the bed or fence section, not the burrow entrance itself. Check that spray will not create a slippery path, flood a structure or damage plants. If the wombat simply changes direction and begins digging at another location, stop treating the device as a solution and reassess the route and barrier.

Organic fertilizer or predator-scent materials

These materials may provide a short-lived reason to avoid an area. Weather, habituation and the availability of an alternative route affect the result. Keep any product away from places where an animal could ingest, become entangled in or be contaminated by it, and remove it if it creates a welfare risk.

Do not rely on displacement

Both New South Wales and Tasmanian advice warns that a displaced wombat may dig somewhere less desirable. Moving the problem to a neighbour’s yard, a road edge or beneath another structure is not a successful wildlife outcome. A route-sharing gate or a carefully monitored exclusion line is preferable where it can meet the property’s needs.

Deal with a burrow under a building separately

New South Wales describes a sturdy one-way door that lets an animal leave a burrow under a building but prevents re-entry. Steel mesh around the entrance can be added where necessary to stop digging beneath the door. South Australia also describes one-way gates used with exclusion fencing so animals can leave a fenced area or depart a burrow before it is destroyed.

This intervention depends on timing and correct fitting. A door installed while a wombat, young or another animal remains inside can cause suffering. A blocked or poorly sealed entrance can also force a new excavation into the building’s foundations or another unsafe location.

  1. Contact the relevant state wildlife authority and describe the structure, entrance and signs of current use.
  2. Have the entrance assessed and the exit arrangement designed for that site.
  3. Install the one-way device and any reinforcing mesh so the animal can leave without encountering sharp edges or a trap.
  4. Monitor for departure and for fresh digging before taking any further action.
  5. Do not destroy or permanently seal the entrance until officials or a qualified professional confirm that it is inactive and that the process is lawful.

Confirm whether a burrow is inactive before any destruction

New South Wales says only inactive burrows may be bulldozed and describes placing sticks across entrances, then checking them daily for at least a week to see whether they have been disturbed. A stick test is an observation method, not permission to close the burrow; seek state-specific advice before using it where the entrance may contain dependent young or other wildlife.

Bulldozing an active burrow can bury wombats alive. South Australia says destruction should be considered only where impacts are significant and must be carried out without harm or suffering. The department states: “All wombat management must consider the welfare of the wombat, follow permit conditions and relevant codes of practice or guidelines.”

Jurisdiction Relevant official guidance and date Key point for a homeowner
New South Wales Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, “Living with wombats,” updated 1 July 2026 Use gates at known breaches, consider one-way doors for building burrows, and confirm inactivity before destruction.
Victoria Conservation Regulator, “Common Wombat wildlife management methods,” published 20 May 2024 Introduce a swing gate gradually and maintain it; a sample gate is 60 cm by 90 cm.
South Australia Department for Environment and Water, “Managing wombats,” page accessed 13 October 2026 Use monitored skirts and safe gate openings; welfare, permits and codes of practice apply.
Tasmania Department of Natural Resources and Environment, “Living with Wombats,” last published 1 October 2026 Motion sprinklers and scent approaches may deter temporarily; trapping or relocating without the relevant permit is illegal.

Tasmanian guidance specifically warns that trapping is highly stressful and that trapping and relocating wombats without the relevant permit is illegal there. Do not assume a permit from one jurisdiction applies elsewhere. Contact the authority for the state where the garden is located before trapping, relocating, destroying a burrow or installing an electrical barrier.

Monitor the result and correct failures early

The wombat digs beside the new gate

Check whether another opening remains easier to use, whether the gate is too heavy to push, or whether the bottom edge has a gap. Re-establish the gradual introduction sequence and repair nearby alternatives rather than adding random obstacles along the runway.

Fresh soil appears under an exclusion fence

Follow the dig to its starting point, inspect the skirt and corner joins, and repair the weakness immediately. Do not assume that adding more buried footing will solve it; the animal may simply dig below the new edge.

The sprinkler moves the problem

Map the new digging location and decide whether the property can share that route. If the protected area must remain clear, replace the temporary deterrent with a properly designed, monitored exclusion barrier and obtain local advice if a burrow is involved.

A gate or mesh has a sharp edge or trapping gap

Stop using that section until it is made safe. Remove protruding wire, close dangerous gaps and confirm that the moving gate cannot pin an animal against the ground or frame.

You cannot tell whether a burrow is occupied

Do not seal it, flood it, fill it or send machinery over it. Treat it as active until the appropriate authority or qualified wildlife professional has assessed it.

A practical, welfare-first installation checklist

  • Photograph and map every breach, track and burrow before changing anything.
  • Decide whether the goal is shared passage or exclusion from a defined area.
  • Check the wildlife rules and permit requirements for the state where the property sits.
  • Choose visible, sturdy materials without sharp edges, pinch points or trapping gaps.
  • Keep any shared-route gate light enough to push and introduce it gradually.
  • Use a ground skirt for exclusion where appropriate, then inspect the full perimeter regularly.
  • Treat sprinklers and scent materials as temporary experiments, not guaranteed protection.
  • Use one-way exits under buildings only with specialist guidance and post-installation monitoring.
  • Never trap, relocate or destroy a burrow as a do-it-yourself shortcut.

What a humane solution looks like

A humane design changes the conflict rather than simply forcing the wombat away. At a known runway, that means a maintained gate that preserves passage. Around a garden bed that must be protected, it means a continuous mesh barrier whose edges cannot injure or trap an animal and whose condition is checked after digging attempts. Under a building, it means a monitored, lawful exit process rather than a sealed entrance. When the site, barrier and local rules are considered together, the garden can be protected without turning a familiar wombat route into a dangerous dead end.
