To wipe an Unturned server safely, stop it cleanly, create a complete backup, and delete only the save category you intend to reset. Remove the active map folder under Level for a map-only wipe, remove player-save data for a player-only wipe, or perform both operations for a full wipe. The exact directory depends on your installation and the server’s ServerID.
Choose the wipe that matches your goal
Unturned stores the persistent world and player progress separately. Choosing the wrong directory can erase bases when you meant to reset inventories, or remove player progress while leaving every structure standing.

A map-only wipe is the usual choice for a new season when you want players to keep their characters. A player-only wipe is useful when the map should remain but everyone must start over. A full wipe creates a clean world and clean player records.
Prepare the server before deleting anything
1. Announce maintenance and block new joins
Tell players when the server will close and what will be reset. Stop new connections before you begin so nobody is writing a save while files are being removed. If your host provides a maintenance or password setting, apply it before shutdown, but do not rely on that setting as a substitute for stopping the process.

2. Save and shut down from the console
In the live server console, run:
SaveShutdown
Smartly Dressed Games’ official server documentation notes that Unturned has no built-in autosave feature: you must use Save while the server is running, or Shutdown to save and close it safely. Wait until the process has actually exited before touching the files. Closing a terminal window or killing the process can leave the newest changes unsaved or leave files in use.
3. Back up the complete server directory
Copy the entire server folder under U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/ to storage outside the live installation. Include saves, configuration, administration files and any server-specific settings. A complete backup is safer than copying only the map folder because it lets you recover from deleting the wrong server or the wrong map.

4. Confirm the active map and exact server ID
Identify the map currently loaded and the exact ServerID used by the instance you are about to modify. Installations can contain several server folders, and Workshop maps may use names that differ from the display name. Never assume a sample folder name from a hosting panel applies to your installation.

On Linux, capitalization matters. Treat Level, map names and every other path component as case-sensitive. If you are unsure, start the server, note the map reported during loading, then shut it down with Shutdown before continuing.
How to perform a map-only wipe
What this removes
A map-only wipe removes the saved world state for one map: player-built buildings, barricades and other persistent changes stored in that map’s folder. It does not remove the player records stored separately, so inventories, skills and other player progress remain when the correct player data is left untouched.

Steps
- Complete the save, shutdown and backup procedure above.
- Open
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Level/. - Find the folder whose name matches the map that was active on this server. Verify the name rather than deleting every folder in
Level; other folders may belong to maps you want to preserve. - Delete or move that single map folder. Moving it into a dated backup directory is an extra safeguard because you can restore it without rebuilding the server backup.
- Leave the player-save data and administration files in place.
- Start the server and wait for the loading process to complete before allowing players back in.
Workshop maps deserve an additional check: the folder may use the Workshop asset’s internal name or identifier rather than the name players see in the menu. If the folder is not obvious, compare the server’s configured map value with the directory names and verify the result after restart.
How to perform a player-data-only wipe
What this removes
A player-only wipe removes the saved player data in the server’s Players directory. It resets the progress represented by that data while leaving the map folder, bases and other world changes intact.

Steps
- Save, shut down and back up the complete
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/directory. - Open the server’s
Playersdirectory and identify the player-save data used by that installation. - Delete or move only that player-save data. Do not remove the
Levelmap folder if the objective is to preserve bases and structures. - Inspect the separate administration files before restarting. Keep them if bans, whitelist entries and administrator privileges must survive the wipe.
- Start the server, wait for
Loading level: 100%, and test with a controlled account before reopening the server.
Do not mistake Players.dat for ordinary player saves
57 Studios’ server reference identifies Players.dat as a separate binary file that contains whitelist, ban and administrator-privilege information. It is listed alongside Commands.dat and Config.json under Servers/<servername>/Server/, rather than being a disposable shortcut for clearing ordinary player progress.
If you delete or replace Players.dat, you may lose those administrative controls. Preserve it when the wipe should affect inventories, skills or character progress only. Never edit the file while the server process is running; stop the server first and keep the original in your backup.
How to perform a full wipe
A full wipe combines both partial operations: remove the active map folder under Level and remove the player-save data under Players. This resets structures and player progress together.
- Announce the reset and stop new joins.
- Run
Save, thenShutdownin the server console. - Back up the complete server directory under
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/. - Confirm the active map and server ID.
- Remove only that map’s folder from
Level. - Remove the player-save data from
Players. - Leave configuration and administration files in place unless a separate, deliberate configuration reset is part of your plan.
- Restart and complete the verification checklist before announcing that the server is available.
Deleting both save categories does not automatically reset server settings, Workshop subscriptions or administrative policy. Those are separate decisions.

Files and commands that are not a wipe

The Unturned command reference describes ResetConfig as “Resets the config file to the default values.” Use it only when you intentionally want default configuration. Do not delete configuration files as a shortcut for wiping bases or player inventories.
Verify the result after restarting
- Start the server and watch the console until it reports
Loading level: 100%. Reconnecting before that point can produce misleading results or interfere with startup. - Confirm that the intended map loads. If a different map appears, stop the server and recheck the configured map and the
ServerIDpath before deleting anything else. - For a map wipe, visit known locations and confirm that structures, barricades and other saved world changes are gone.
- For a player wipe, sign in with a test account and check that the expected progress has reset while the map remains intact.
- Check administrator, whitelist and ban behavior. Because those controls can be stored in
Players.dat, verify them even when you intended to preserve administration. - Check Workshop content and server settings if the restart behaves differently from the previous session.
- Only after these checks should you reopen the server to the public.
Recovery and common mistakes
The wrong map folder was deleted
Stop the server, restore the deleted folder from the dated backup, and start again. Do not attempt to reconstruct a world by copying files while the process is live. If you moved the folder instead of permanently deleting it, return it to the exact original path and capitalization.
The wrong server was wiped
Stop the affected instance and restore the complete backup for that server. Recheck the ServerID and the hosting panel’s working directory before repeating the operation. Multiple server folders under U3DS/Servers/ make this mistake easy to make.
The map did not reset
Confirm that you removed the folder for the map actually loaded, not a similarly named Workshop folder. Check capitalization on Linux and verify that the server was fully shut down before deletion. A folder removed from an inactive or different server directory has no effect on the running instance after restart.

Players lost administration unexpectedly
Restore the original Players.dat from the backup with the server stopped. Recheck whitelist, ban and administrator entries after startup. Keep a copy of the restored file before making any further changes.
The server fails to start after the wipe
Stop troubleshooting changes and restore the complete pre-wipe backup first. Once the original server starts normally, repeat the procedure in smaller steps: back up again, remove only the intended save directory, and test startup before making another change.
A practical decision checklist
- Want to remove bases but keep characters? Delete only the active map folder in
Level. - Want everyone to lose inventories, skills and progress but keep the existing world? Delete only the player-save data in
Players. - Want a completely fresh season? Delete both categories after making a full backup.
- Want default server settings? Treat that as a separate configuration task using
ResetConfig; it is not part of a normal wipe. - Need bans, whitelist entries or admin privileges to remain? Preserve
Players.datand verify those controls after restart.
The safest wipe is the smallest one that achieves the reset you announced. Keep the backup until players have confirmed the intended result and the server has run normally through a complete restart.
