To keep a sweater from becoming long, lopsided, felted, or shoulder-bumped, let its sewn-in care label control every decision. Use the permitted wash method with minimal agitation, remove water without twisting or wringing, reshape the damp knit, and dry it flat unless the label explicitly permits another method. Once dry, fold knitwear in a drawer rather than hanging it. Wet knitted fabric can stretch under its own water weight, so drying and storage are as important as washing.
Start with the garment’s own care label
Fiber content is useful context, but it is not a complete care instruction. Two sweaters that both contain wool may have different finishes, blends, linings, or constructions and therefore different washing and drying limits. Read the sewn-in label before adding water or detergent.
In the United States, covered apparel is required to carry regular care instructions, including washing or dry-cleaning methods and drying directions when relevant. International labels use standardized care symbols; the maximum temperature and permitted process come from the symbol on that garment, not from a general rule about wool, cotton, acrylic, or another fiber.

If a symbol is unclear, pause and identify it through the labeling system used where the garment was sold. When instructions conflict with assumptions based on fiber type, the label wins.

Prepare the sweater before washing
Inspect the construction
Close zippers and fasteners that could catch the knit, remove detachable belts or jewelry, and empty every pocket. Woolmark advises removing accessories before washing or storing because their weight can contribute to sagging or bulging. Check for loose threads, pulled loops, or an open seam; washing can worsen damage that is already present.
Turn wool garments inside out
For wool items whose labels allow washing, Woolmark recommends turning the garment inside out. Keep this as a wool-specific preparation step rather than a universal guarantee for every knitted fabric.
Choose detergent only after checking the label
When a washable wool garment permits it, Woolmark recommends a neutral, mild wool detergent. Use the amount and product type appropriate to the label and detergent instructions. A mild product does not make a dry-clean-only garment washable, and it does not cancel temperature or agitation limits.

Hand washing gives you direct control, but it still requires restraint. The most common sources of distortion are pulling the fabric while it is wet, rubbing one area against another, and twisting the garment to force water out.

- Fill a clean basin with water at the label’s permitted temperature. Do not choose a temperature solely because the fiber is wool or another knit.
- Add the approved mild detergent and dissolve it. Premixing prevents concentrated detergent from sitting on one section of the fabric.
- Lower the sweater into the water and let it become saturated. Support the garment rather than dropping it by one shoulder or sleeve.
- Move it gently through the water. Avoid scrubbing, rubbing, stretching, or repeatedly lifting it by a narrow edge. Work on stains only as the care instructions permit.
- Rinse with water at the compatible temperature. Sudden temperature changes are unnecessary; keep the process consistent with the label.
- Remove water by pressing, not wringing. Support the full garment, press out excess water carefully, and never twist the body or sleeves.
- Transfer it to a towel or drying screen with both hands. Do not carry a saturated sweater by its neckline or one cuff.
GINETEX describes a very-mild-wash symbol as requiring substantially reduced mechanical treatment. Its guidance also says to reduce the load so the drum is no more than one-third full when that very-mild machine wash is allowed. That limit applies to the specified symbol; it is not a blanket rule that makes other garments machine-safe.
Use a washing machine only when the label permits it
A machine can be appropriate for a sweater marked for machine washing, including some wool garments, but the label determines the cycle. Select the named wool or delicate program only when it matches the care claim, and use the labeled temperature. Do not treat a machine’s “wool” button as permission for a hand-wash-only item.
- Keep the load within the label’s instructions. For a very-mild-wash symbol, GINETEX specifies a substantially reduced load, with the drum no more than one-third full.
- Use the cycle’s gentlest settings that are actually compatible with the label; do not add an extra high-speed spin if the garment’s instructions rule it out.
- Remove the sweater promptly when the cycle ends so it is not left compressed and wet in the drum.
- Support it with both hands when lifting it out. Wet knitwear is vulnerable to lengthwise pull at this stage.
A fine-mesh wash bag may be a convenient accessory for a machine-washable delicate, but it does not change a hand-wash-only or dry-clean-only instruction. Official care guidance does not establish a bag as a universal protection method.
Dry the sweater flat to prevent lengthwise stretch
Drying is the decisive stretch-prevention step. Woolmark says to dry sweaters flat unless the care claim allows tumble drying. A saturated knit is heavy; hanging it lets gravity pull the wet loops downward, which can lengthen the garment and create shoulder humps. The Woolmark Company states: “Line drying or drying on hangers can cause knitted garments to stretch due to the weight of the moisture contained by the garment, with the result that the garment grows in length and loses its shape.”

Flat-dry on a clean towel
- Lay out a pale or white, lint-free towel. The light color helps you notice dye transfer, and the towel should not shed fibers onto the knit.
- Place the sweater flat. Arrange the body, sleeves, cuffs, and neckline so no section hangs over an edge.
- Restore its normal dimensions while damp. Gently align side seams, straighten the hem, set the shoulders, and smooth folds. Do not pull beyond the shape the garment had before washing.
- Keep it away from direct sun and direct heat. Do not put it on a radiator, heated appliance, or other hot surface unless the label specifically directs a compatible method.
- Turn or move it only with full support if the towel becomes saturated. Lifting one end can stretch the wet fabric.
Use a mesh sweater-drying screen when space is limited
A mesh garment-drying screen provides another flat surface and may improve airflow around the sweater. It is optional, not a requirement: a clean towel performs the same essential job of supporting the knit horizontally. Choose between them based on the flat space available, airflow, and setup convenience rather than assuming one is universally faster or safer.

When a dryer is allowed
Use a tumble dryer only when the individual care claim explicitly permits it. Woolmark says a garment with an explicit tumble-dry claim may use a low-heat or wool/delicates setting. That permission applies to the labeled garment, not to every wool sweater or knit layer. If the label says to dry flat or says not to tumble dry, use the flat method instead.
Reshape the knit while it is damp
Reshaping is not aggressive stretching. It is the controlled act of returning the garment to its original outline before the fibers set in a distorted position. Work on a flat surface and adjust small areas in sequence:

- Align the shoulder seams and neckline.
- Set both side seams so the body is not twisted.
- Straighten the hem and match cuffs or sleeve lengths.
- Smooth ridges, folds, and bunched ribbing with your palms.
- Check the garment again as it dries and correct a developing fold with light, even movements.
Do not pull from the neckline, drag one sleeve, or pin the fabric under tension. The goal is the garment’s normal size and proportions, not a larger one.

If a sweater is already stretched or misshapen
For a wool garment that has developed a localized distortion, Woolmark suggests dipping the affected area in warm water at 30°C to 40°C, gently massaging it, and then drying the garment flat in shape. Treat this as wool-specific guidance, not a guaranteed repair for every fiber, blend, knit density, or construction.
- Confirm that the item is wool and that this localized treatment will not violate its care claim.
- Wet only the affected area with water in the 30°C–40°C range.
- Massage gently rather than rubbing or pulling the knit.
- Lay the garment flat and ease the area back toward its original outline.
- Let it dry supported and flat.
Severe felting caused by a care-label violation may be irreversible. Stop if the fabric has become dense, hard, or substantially smaller; further manipulation can add damage rather than restore the original shape.

Once the sweater is completely dry, fold it gently and place it in a drawer or on a shelf. Woolmark’s rule is “Hang wovens, fold knits”: shaped or padded hangers are for woven wool garments, while knitted garments should be folded. Folding prevents a hanger’s narrow points from creating shoulder bumps and avoids the long-term pull that can occur when a knit is suspended.
Prepare garments for seasonal storage
- Store only clean, fully dry knitwear. Moisture trapped in a fold undermines the point of careful drying.
- Empty pockets and remove belts, jewelry, and other accessories before putting the item away.
- Fold along natural lines without compressing the garment under a heavy stack.
- For long-term wool storage, Woolmark mentions moth repellent. Keep repellent from direct contact with the garment; follow the product’s own directions for placement and ventilation.
- Keep the storage area away from direct heat and sun, and leave enough room to retrieve a sweater without pulling it by one corner.
Fold a bulky sweater
Lay the sweater face down, fold the sleeves inward so they lie along the body, then fold the body from the sides or bottom according to the available drawer depth. The exact fold is less important than supporting the whole garment and avoiding a tight, stretched bundle. For a long cardigan, close the front if that prevents edges from dragging, then fold it in a broad rectangle.

Choose between permitted care options
Some labels allow more than one method. Compare the options by compatibility first, then by handling and convenience.

For drying, both a towel and a mesh screen support the same essential requirement: a flat, shaped surface. The sources do not establish a universal fastest or safest product ranking, so select the surface you can use correctly and consistently.
Common mistakes and the correct recovery
- Hanging a saturated sweater: Move it to a supported flat surface, reshape it, and let it finish drying there.
- Wringing to save time: Stop twisting. Press water out while supporting the full garment, then transfer it to a towel or screen.
- Using fiber content as permission: Recheck the sewn-in label. Fiber names do not override a dry-clean-only or flat-dry instruction.
- Filling the machine completely: If the label shows a very-mild wash, reduce the load substantially; GINETEX specifies no more than one-third of the drum.
- Applying direct heat: Move the knit away from radiators, heated surfaces, and strong sun unless the label explicitly authorizes that method.
- Putting moth repellent on the fabric: Keep it off the garment and follow its placement directions.
- Assuming a mesh bag fixes an unsafe cycle: A bag can organize a permitted machine wash, but it cannot convert hand-wash-only or dry-clean-only instructions.
A repeatable sweater-care checklist
- Read the sewn-in wash and dry symbols.
- Remove accessories, empty pockets, and close catching fasteners.
- Turn a washable wool garment inside out.
- Use the label-compatible detergent, temperature, and method.
- Keep machine treatment within the specified load and cycle limits.
- Press out water without twisting or wringing.
- Lay the knit flat on a clean towel or mesh screen.
- Reshape seams, hem, sleeves, cuffs, and neckline to their normal outline.
- Keep it away from direct heat and sun while it dries.
- Fold the completely dry knit and store it in a drawer or on a shelf.
- For long-term wool storage, use moth protection without placing repellent directly on the garment.
What matters most
The safest routine is label-led rather than fiber-led: wash only by the permitted method, handle wet fabric as if its own weight could deform it, dry it flat while restoring its shape, and fold it for storage. Those four decisions prevent the most common causes of stretching and shoulder distortion without assuming that every sweater or knit layer behaves identically.
