The safe method is the one printed on your blanket’s care label and manual. Disconnect the blanket from power, remove the controller or cord exactly as instructed, keep electrical parts out of water, and use only the permitted wash and drying settings. Let the blanket become completely dry before reconnecting it. For storage, follow the manual’s direction on rolling, folding, or laying it flat while keeping the blanket dry, uncrushed, and free of sharp creases. Inspect the blanket, heating area, controller, cord, and plug before every season of use.
Why there is no universal washing method
A heated blanket combines fabric with insulated heating elements, connectors, a controller, and a power cord. Those components are arranged differently among models, so one manufacturer’s laundry settings cannot safely be transferred to another blanket. The care label and the manual for your exact model take precedence over general laundry advice.
Published instructions differ on whether a blanket may be machine-washed, which cycle and temperature are allowed, whether a dryer may be used, and how the blanket should be stored. Even two blankets sold in the same country can have different limits. If the label is missing, unreadable, or inconsistent with the manual, contact the manufacturer with the model number before washing. Do not guess a temperature or dryer setting.

Before you put the blanket near water
- Read the permanent care label and the model-specific manual.
- Confirm whether the blanket is machine-washable, hand-washable, spot-clean only, or not washable.
- Record the permitted water temperature, cycle, detergent, and drying method.
- Switch the blanket off and unplug it from the wall outlet.
- Detach the controller, connector, and power cord using the procedure shown in the manual. Do not pull on a wire to separate a connector.
- Keep the controller, plug, and cord out of the sink, washer, and bath water unless the manual expressly identifies a part as washable.
- Look for existing damage. A frayed cord, exposed conductor, scorch mark, broken connector, or damaged fabric should be dealt with before cleaning.
Do not rely on a power switch alone. A blanket that remains plugged in can still present an electrical hazard while wet. The detachable controls must be removed as the manufacturer directs.

Choose the permitted cleaning route
| Your manual says | Use this approach | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| Machine washing is allowed | Use only the listed cycle, temperature, detergent, and load instructions. | Do not substitute a hotter cycle, a stronger agitation setting, or an unapproved laundry additive. |
| Hand washing is allowed | Use the manual’s water temperature and cleaning directions; support the blanket while wet. | Do not twist, wring, or sharply bend the blanket to remove water. |
| Spot cleaning only | Clean only the areas and in the manner the manual permits, keeping connectors and controls dry. | Do not soak the whole blanket because another model is washable. |
| No washing instruction or an unknown model | Pause and obtain the model’s manual or manufacturer confirmation. | Do not infer safety from a similar-looking blanket. |
Machine-washing procedure when the manual permits it
- Disconnect everything. Unplug the blanket, remove the controller and cord, and close or protect the blanket-side connector as the manual specifies.
- Check the machine setting. Select the exact cycle and maximum temperature printed in the instructions. “Delicate” is not automatically correct unless the manual says so.
- Measure the approved detergent. Maytag’s general guidance calls for mild detergent and advises against bleach and fabric softener. Apply that advice only where it does not conflict with your model’s instructions.
- Load without forcing it. Do not cram the blanket into a drum that leaves it tightly compressed. Follow any manufacturer direction about a laundry bag or a separate load.
- Run the specified cycle. Do not add extra agitation, a second spin, stain chemicals, or a sanitizing cycle unless the manual explicitly permits them.
- Remove it promptly and gently. Support the wet blanket with both hands. Do not twist, wring, yank, or lift it from one corner; those actions can stress the heating-element channels and connector.
Whirlpool’s care guidance similarly starts with the care label, calls for detaching the controller and cord, and says to avoid twisting or wringing. Those are manufacturer directions, not a replacement for the instructions supplied with your own blanket.
Hand-washing procedure
- Fill a clean basin with water at the temperature specified by the manual.
- Add only the permitted amount and type of detergent. If the manual does not authorize bleach, fabric softener, or other additives, leave them out.
- Lower the blanket into the water without folding it into a tight bundle. Gently move it through the water as directed.
- Drain and rinse in the manner specified by the manufacturer. Avoid pulling on the connector or controller-side opening.
- Press water out by supporting broad sections of the blanket. Never wring, twist, or sharply crease it.
- Move it to the drying location with enough support that the wet weight does not stretch one edge or the connector area.
If the manual gives no hand-washing procedure, do not invent one. A blanket labeled machine-washable may still prohibit soaking, and a blanket labeled spot-clean only may be damaged by immersion.

| Source | Instruction published for its products or model | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | Check the care label, unplug and detach the controller or cord, use the specified cycle and temperature, avoid twisting or wringing, and wait until fully dry before reconnecting. | Use as an example of the sequence, not as a setting for another brand or model. |
| Maytag | Follow the care tag for wash and dryer settings; its general guidance describes mild detergent, no bleach or fabric softener, and gentle or delicate washing where allowed. | Confirm that your exact care tag permits each step. |
| Tristar heating blanket support | Remove the control unit, place the blanket in a sealed net bag, use a delicate cycle at no more than 40°C, and air dry. | The 40°C limit, net bag, and air-drying direction apply to that product instruction, not to all heated blankets. |
| Sunbeam US heated-bedding care page | Provides its own care directions and cautions that commercial dryers may become too hot for its heated products. | Check your model before using any commercial or household dryer; do not transplant this warning as a universal setting. |
Drying without stressing the heating elements
Drying is part of electrical safety, not merely a finishing step. Use a dryer only if the exact manual allows it, and then use the stated temperature and cycle. If the instructions say to air dry, do not substitute a dryer to save time. A dryer that is safe for ordinary bedding can expose a heated blanket to excessive heat or tumbling.
- Keep the controller, cord, and plug away from water while the blanket dries.
- Arrange the blanket according to the manual so its weight is supported evenly.
- Avoid sharp folds, tight clips, high heat, and any method that traps dampness in the wiring channels.
- Turn or reposition it only as the instructions allow.
- Do not reconnect the controller, plug in the blanket, or test its heat while any part is damp.
WorkSafe New Zealand states: “Never use an electric blanket that is wet. Dry it thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.” Treat “feels mostly dry” as insufficient: the blanket must be thoroughly and completely dry, including around connectors and inner layers.
What to do if the blanket is still damp
Leave it disconnected and continue the approved drying process. Do not use a heater, hair dryer, iron, radiator, or improvised high-heat method unless the manual specifically permits that equipment and temperature. If dampness remains after the allowed process, contact the manufacturer rather than reconnecting it. Moisture inside a connector or controller can create a shock, short-circuit, corrosion, or overheating risk.

Storage: follow the manual’s roll, fold, or flat instruction
Storage directions genuinely conflict among products. One product manual says to let the blanket cool before folding, avoid wrinkles, and keep heavy objects off it because deep creases or folds can damage wiring. WorkSafe New Zealand advises storing an electric blanket rolled or flat in a dry area and warns against folding. Because these directions are not identical, use the exact method printed for your model.

| Storage instruction in your manual | Preparation | Protection during storage |
|---|---|---|
| Roll | Cool and dry the blanket fully, then roll loosely in the stated direction without a tight bend. | Keep it in a dry location where other items cannot crush the roll. |
| Fold | Cool it first and make only the broad, gentle folds permitted by the manual; avoid hard creases. | Do not place boxes or other heavy objects on top. |
| Store flat | Lay the completely dry blanket flat as directed. | Keep sharp objects, moisture, pets, and heavy items away from the heating area. |
| Instruction is unclear | Do not choose a storage method by habit. | Ask the manufacturer for the model-specific method before putting it away. |
Store the blanket in a dry, clean place with normal room ventilation. Do not pack it while warm or damp. Keep the controller and cord with it in a way that prevents the cord from being sharply kinked, crushed, or pulled at the connector. Do not use the blanket as a mattress pad, seat cushion, or surface for heavy storage during the off-season.

- Cord and plug: Look for cuts, flattened sections, loose strain relief, discoloration, or bent contacts.
- Controller and switch: Check the case, buttons, display, and connector for cracks, moisture, scorching, or looseness.
- Blanket surface: Look for torn fabric, pulled seams, deep creases, crushed areas, or exposed components.
- Heating area: Feel for unusual lumps, kinks, breaks, or a section that appears damaged. Do not bend the blanket aggressively to investigate.
- During a supervised first use: Watch for a hot spot, burning smell, smoke, buzzing, flickering control, or abnormal shutoff.
A hot spot can indicate that a coil is kinked or damaged. WorkSafe New Zealand warns that this can create fire or electric-shock risk. If you find a hot spot or any electrical damage, unplug the blanket, take it out of service, and seek assessment from a licensed electrical worker or replace it. Do not sew over wiring, splice a cord, open the controller, or attempt a home repair.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
- “It looks like my other blanket, so I used the same cycle.” Use the exact model’s label and manual; appearance does not establish washability.
- Leaving the controller attached. Disconnect it before water reaches the blanket and keep it dry.
- Using bleach or fabric softener by habit. Use only additives allowed by the manufacturer; Maytag’s general guidance says to avoid both.
- Wringing to speed up drying. Support the blanket and press out water gently; do not twist it.
- Using a commercial dryer because the blanket fits. Some manufacturers caution that commercial dryers may be too hot. Follow your model’s dryer instruction.
- Plugging it in to “test” dryness. Wait until it is completely dry; never test a wet blanket electrically.
- Storing it under heavy items. Crushing and deep creases can damage wiring. Store it where it remains protected and uncompressed.
- Ignoring a small hot spot. A localized hot area is a safety warning, not a normal break-in effect. Stop using the blanket and have it assessed or replace it.
A practical end-to-end checklist
- Find the exact model number and read its care label and manual.
- Confirm the allowed cleaning method, temperature, cycle, detergent, and drying method.
- Unplug the blanket and remove the controller and cord exactly as directed.
- Wash or hand-clean it without exceeding the stated settings and without twisting or wringing.
- Dry it by the approved method until every layer and connector area is completely dry.
- Inspect the cord, plug, controller, fabric, heating elements, and surface for damage.
- Store it using the model’s permitted roll, fold, or flat method in a dry place without crushing or sharp creases.
- Inspect it again before reconnecting it for the next season.
What to check when buying a replacement
If inspection finds damage and the blanket must be replaced, treat care information as a deciding specification rather than assuming all heated bedding is maintained alike. Compare the exact model’s documented:

- Maximum wash temperature and required cycle.
- Whether tumble drying is allowed and the permitted dryer setting.
- Controller and cord removal procedure.
- Storage direction: rolling, folding, or flat placement.
No routine washing instruction makes a damaged blanket safe. A replacement should still be inspected and maintained according to its own manual.
When to stop and ask for help
Stop the process and contact the manufacturer when the label conflicts with the manual, the model number cannot be identified, a connector will not release normally, the blanket remains damp after the permitted drying process, or you discover electrical damage. A licensed electrical worker is the appropriate assessor for suspected wiring faults; do not return a questionable blanket to service simply because it still heats.
