The safest way to wash and store a cardigan starts with its sewn-in care label. The label determines whether the garment may be machine washed, hand washed, or dry cleaned; fiber blends and construction can make two similar-looking cardigans behave differently. For a washable wool cardigan, use a wool or delicate cycle with mild wool detergent, or hand-wash it in lukewarm water, then remove water without wringing and dry it flat in the shade. Store it clean, completely dry, and folded rather than hanging. Pilling is caused by friction, so it can be reduced but not guaranteed away.
The steps below explain how to choose the correct method, handle wet knitwear, resolve the difference between ventilated and airtight storage, and remove pills without damaging the fabric.
Read the care label before doing anything
Care symbols are instructions, not suggestions. A cardigan labeled dry-clean only should not be put through a home wash, and a do-not-wash symbol rules out both machine and hand washing. If the label permits only hand washing, do not substitute a machine’s delicate setting. If it permits machine washing, follow the stated temperature and cycle rather than assuming that every wool or cotton knit has the same tolerance.

What the label means for your choices

Detergents, laundry bags, drying screens, and fabric shavers cannot override a label restriction. They are tools for a permitted method, not permission to use one.
Prepare a washable cardigan to limit friction
- Turn it inside out. This puts much of the visible surface inside the wash and reduces direct rubbing on the outside. Woolmark specifically recommends this for washable wool.
- Use a laundry bag for machine washing. A bag can reduce contact with the drum and other garments. Do not pack it tightly; the cardigan still needs room for water to circulate.
- Choose a neutral, mild wool detergent when the label permits washing. Woolmark identifies a mild wool detergent as suitable for washable wool and warns against bleach. Excessive fabric softener can contribute to later pilling, so omit it unless the label specifically directs otherwise.
- Keep the load gentle. Rough garments, zippers, hooks, and heavy items can increase abrasion. If the label gives a load or sorting instruction, follow it; otherwise, avoid combining the cardigan with items likely to catch or rub it.
These preparations reduce mechanical stress, but they do not make every cardigan machine-safe. The sewn-in label remains the deciding authority.
Machine-wash route: use it only when the label allows it
For a wool cardigan marked machine washable, Woolmark recommends turning it inside out or placing it in a laundry bag, adding wool detergent, and selecting the machine’s wool cycle. If there is no wool cycle, its guidance points to cold water or a delicates cycle. Use the temperature and options stated on the garment label if they are more specific.

- Close the machine and select the label-permitted wool cycle. If none exists, select cold water or a delicates cycle as Woolmark advises for washable wool.
- Add the recommended amount of a mild wool detergent. Do not use bleach. Avoid adding large amounts of fabric softener, which Woolmark says can contribute to pilling later.
- Place the inside-out cardigan in a laundry bag if using one, and avoid an overcrowded drum.
- Start the cycle and remove the cardigan promptly when it ends. Do not leave wet knitwear sitting in the machine, where its own weight and creasing can make reshaping harder.
- Move directly to water removal and flat drying; do not hang it while wet.
A machine’s “delicate” label does not automatically equal a wool cycle. Agitation, temperature, and the label’s permitted method all matter. If the care label says hand wash, use the hand-wash procedure instead.
Hand-wash route: soak, rinse, and handle gently
Hand washing is appropriate when the label specifies it or permits it. Woolmark’s sequence is lukewarm water, a 10-minute soak, thorough rinsing, and gentle handling. The American Cleaning Institute likewise advises gently swishing rather than scrubbing.
- Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water. Add a mild wool detergent if the label permits detergent washing, dispersing it before the cardigan goes in.
- Place the cardigan in the water and let it soak for 10 minutes.
- Swish it gently through the water. Do not rub panels together, pull at the fabric, twist sleeves, or scrub stains aggressively; those motions create the friction and distortion you are trying to avoid.
- Drain and rinse thoroughly with clean water until detergent is removed. Support the garment as you lift it so its wet weight does not pull it longer.
- Press out excess water with your hands. Do not wring or twist.
The American Cleaning Institute’s Sweater Care guidance recommends towel-rolling and pressing rather than wringing. Woolmark’s symbol guidance also says to press out excess water before reshaping. Water removal should be slow and compressive, never a twisting motion.

Remove water and dry the cardigan flat
Drying is where many otherwise careful washes go wrong. A wet cardigan is heavy; hanging that weight from the shoulders can lengthen the body, distort armholes, and leave the garment with a hanger shape. Woolmark recommends drying wool knitwear flat in the shade.

- Roll the towel and cardigan together, then press the roll gently to transfer water. Unroll and repeat with a dry section or towel if necessary. Do not wring the roll.
- Move the cardigan to a flat drying surface. Smooth the body, sleeves, cuffs, and button bands into their natural shape while it is still damp.
- Dry it in the shade with air able to circulate. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and other direct heat.
- Leave it flat until fully dry, turning or repositioning it only as needed without pulling the fabric.
Do not substitute a hanger, a clothesline, or the edge of a door for a flat surface while the cardigan is wet. If the garment label expressly permits another drying method, that label instruction takes precedence; otherwise, flat shade drying is the conservative choice for knitwear.
Why heat and hanging are risky
- Hanging: concentrates wet weight at the shoulders and can stretch the length or deform the shape.
- Direct heat: a radiator or similar source can dry sections unevenly and may damage fibers or alter dimensions.
- Direct sun: Woolmark advises shade drying for wool knitwear; shade also avoids prolonged, intense exposure while the fabric is wet.
Store the cardigan folded, clean, and completely dry
Once dry, fold the cardigan instead of placing it on a hanger. The American Cleaning Institute states, “Sweaters should be folded for storage.” Folding distributes the garment’s weight across a shelf or drawer rather than concentrating it at the shoulders.

Before putting it away
- Clean it first. For long-term wool storage, Woolmark advises cleaning before storage because food residue and body oils can attract moths.
- Dry it fully. Storing even slightly damp knitwear can create a moisture problem and must be avoided.
- Remove temporary items. Take out damp towels, tissue, or anything else that could hold moisture against the garment.
- Fold along natural lines. Lay the cardigan flat, bring the sleeves across the body without stretching them, and fold the body so it fits the shelf or drawer without compression.
Choose storage based on moisture conditions
The two major care authorities give different container advice, and the difference matters. Woolmark recommends airtight bags or containers for long-term wool storage. The American Cleaning Institute recommends a cool, dark, dry, ventilated area and cautions that plastic bags or bins can trap moisture. Neither approach is universally right for every home.

The practical rule is to match the container to the room: clean, dry, and protected from light, with enough ventilation when the environment is prone to moisture. Check stored knitwear periodically rather than assuming a sealed container fixes every humidity problem.

Moth protection
A wool-safe moth repellent is an optional storage category, not a requirement. Woolmark advises that such products should not be placed directly on the garment. Follow the repellent’s own label and keep it separate from the fabric.

Understand and manage pilling
Pills are small fiber bundles formed by abrasion. Friction from wearing, bags, seat backs, neighboring garments, and washing can bring loose fibers together on the surface. Pilling is not proof that a cardigan was washed incorrectly, and no wash routine can promise a pill-free result. The Woolmark Company puts the limitation plainly: “Because pilling is so complex, nobody can guarantee that it won’t occur.” See What is pilling? for its explanation.
Reduce new pilling
- Turn a washable wool cardigan inside out before washing.
- Use a wool or delicates cycle when the label permits machine washing, or hand wash with gentle swishing.
- Avoid rubbing, pulling, scrubbing, and wringing at every stage.
- Reduce repeated abrasion during wear, especially where a strap, rough outer layer, or seat surface repeatedly contacts the same panel.
- Do not use fabric softener as a pilling-prevention shortcut; Woolmark warns that excessive softener can contribute to later pilling.
Remove pills that are already there
Existing pills can be removed, but removal is maintenance rather than prevention. For a small number of pills, lift them gently by hand or use a sweater comb. A fabric shaver is another option. Work carefully and avoid pulling the underlying yarn; the goal is to remove the loose fiber bundle, not to cut into the knitted structure.
Lay the cardigan flat and use light, controlled passes with any tool. Stop if the fabric catches, thins, or begins to pull. If the label or fiber blend has special restrictions, follow those restrictions before using a comb or shaver.

Cardigan-care checklist
- Read the sewn-in label and identify whether the cardigan is machine washable, hand wash, dry-clean only, or do not wash.
- For label-permitted washable wool, turn it inside out and use a laundry bag, wool cycle, and mild wool detergent.
- If hand washing is required, soak in lukewarm water for 10 minutes, swish gently, rinse thoroughly, and never wring.
- Press out water or towel-roll the cardigan; do not twist it.
- Reshape and dry flat in the shade on a pale lint-free towel or mesh screen.
- Keep it away from hangers while wet, direct heat, and direct sunlight.
- Before long-term storage, make sure it is clean and fully dry.
- Fold it for storage and select a ventilated or airtight setup according to the moisture conditions where it will be kept.
- Reduce friction during wear and washing, then remove unavoidable pills gently with a hand, comb, or fabric shaver.
