Start with the care label and filling. Synthetic, down and feather pillows may be machine washable when their labels allow it; memory-foam pillows generally should not go into a washing machine. Use a gentle wash, very little liquid detergent, enough room for the pillows to move, and a drying method matched to the filling. Pause to fluff and reposition them, and do not use or store a pillow until its center is completely dry.

Identify the filling before you add water

Pillows that look similar can have very different cleaning limits. The cover may be washable while the insert is not, and a pillow that tolerates a gentle machine cycle may be damaged by the heat that is safe for another fill. Read the sewn-in care tag and any manufacturer instructions before removing the pillowcase. Then check the owner’s manuals for your washer and dryer, because cycle names, temperature limits and special-item restrictions vary by model.

Filling Machine washing Drying approach when the label permits it Main caution
Synthetic fiber Often allowed, but only if the pillow label says so Low heat is the general Whirlpool recommendation; follow the tag and dryer manual Use little detergent, avoid overloading and dry all the way through
Down or feather Often allowed, but the label controls No-heat air fluff is the general Whirlpool recommendation; shake and reposition repeatedly The center must be dry; a Whirlpool dryer manual warns that damp centers can lead to mildew
Memory foam Whirlpool advises against machine washing Spot-clean or gently hand-clean, then air-dry completely where possible Machine agitation can break the foam apart
Removable cover only Wash the cover according to its own label Use the cover’s stated drying method Do not assume the uncovered insert has the same instructions

The table is a starting point, not a replacement for the label. If the tag prohibits water, prohibits tumble drying or gives a different temperature, those instructions take priority over general guidance.

Prepare the pillow and appliances

Remove cases and inspect the construction

  1. Take off the pillowcase, protector and any removable outer cover. Launder each piece separately under its own care instructions.
  2. Look for torn seams, leaking feathers, exposed foam or a cover that is already separating. Washing can worsen existing damage.
  3. Identify whether the item is a complete pillow or only a washable shell. Never put a foam insert into a washer merely because its cover is labeled washable.

Confirm capacity and settings

  • Make sure the washer drum and dryer have enough space for the pillow to move rather than being tightly packed.
  • If the label allows machine washing, plan to wash two similar pillows together when possible. Whirlpool recommends a pair to help balance the washer load.
  • Locate the gentle or delicate cycle, the permitted water-temperature range and any extra-rinse option. A bedding cycle is not automatically safe; cycle behavior differs by model.
  • Check whether the dryer offers low heat or no-heat air fluff. Do not substitute a hotter setting simply to shorten drying.

Use a measured amount of detergent

For machine-washable synthetic, down or feather pillows, Whirlpool’s general guidance is about one tablespoon of liquid detergent. A small dose limits suds and residue inside a bulky item. If your detergent label or appliance manual specifies a different amount for the load size, follow the more restrictive instruction. Select an extra rinse if the washer provides one and the pillow label permits it.

Machine-wash synthetic, down or feather pillows

1. Load for balance

Place two pillows in the drum when possible, arranging them so they are not wedged into one corner. If you have only one pillow, consult the washer manual before attempting the load; an unbalanced bulky item may trigger repeated spin attempts or fail to clean evenly. Do not add a large quantity of towels or clothing just to fill the drum. The pillows need space to circulate and rinse.

2. Choose the compatible wash cycle

Select a gentle cycle and the warmest water that the pillow’s care tag permits. “Warmest” does not mean “hottest available”: the label’s limit is the boundary. Add the small amount of liquid detergent, and select an extra rinse when available. Avoid bleach, fabric softener or other additives unless the pillow maker specifically allows them; the supplied care guidance does not establish them as necessary.

3. Move the pillows to drying promptly

When the wash ends, remove the pillows rather than leaving them compressed in the drum. Press them lightly to check for unusually heavy water retention or a seam that has opened. If the label permits tumble drying, transfer them promptly. If it requires air drying, support the pillow in a clean, well-ventilated place where all sides can dry.

Hand-wash when the label requires it

Synthetic, down and feather fills

  1. Fill a suitable basin with warm water and dissolve a small amount of liquid detergent before adding the pillow.
  2. Gently press and squeeze the pillow so the solution passes through the fill. Do not scrub aggressively.
  3. Drain and rinse repeatedly until the water runs clear and is no longer sudsy.
  4. Press excess water out with clean towels. Do not twist, wring or tightly roll the pillow, actions that can distort the fill and seams.
  5. Follow the care tag for tumble drying. If tumble drying is not allowed, air-dry in a place where the pillow can be supported and turned until fully dry.

Hand washing is not automatically safer if the pillow remains saturated for a long time. The same requirement applies afterward: the interior, not just the surface, must be dry before use or storage.

When only the cover is washable

Unzip or remove the cover only if its construction allows it. Wash and dry the cover separately, then clean the insert by the method specified for its filling. Do not soak an insert whose label says dry clean only, spot clean only or no water.

Clean memory-foam pillows without destroying the foam

Whirlpool’s pillow-care guidance says memory-foam pillows should never be washed in a washing machine to keep the foam from breaking apart. Treat that as manufacturer guidance and verify it against the pillow maker’s own instructions, because foam formulations and covers differ.

Light stains or a small spill

  1. Remove the cover if it is designed to come off and wash it according to its label.
  2. Blot the stained area with lukewarm water and a small amount of detergent. Avoid saturating the foam.
  3. Blot again with clean water to remove detergent residue. Do not grind the stain deeper by scrubbing.
  4. Place the pillow where air can reach it from all sides and let it dry completely before replacing the cover.

Deeper cleaning permitted by the product instructions

For a foam pillow whose manufacturer allows gentle water cleaning, Whirlpool describes squeezing it carefully in soapy water, rinsing and avoiding wringing. Support the pillow as you handle it; do not twist it or force water out by folding it sharply. Air-dry completely where possible. If the label does not authorize this method, stop at spot cleaning or use the manufacturer’s stated service.

Dry pillows without creating lumps

Match heat to the filling

Fill General Whirlpool setting What to verify first
Synthetic Low heat The pillow tag and your dryer’s special-item instructions
Down or feather No-heat air fluff Whether the label permits tumble drying and whether the dryer has an air-fluff cycle
Memory foam Air dry after approved spot or hand cleaning The foam manufacturer’s water and drying restrictions

Heat that is suitable for one pillow can damage another. Never use a prohibited temperature in an attempt to accelerate drying, and never assume that a dryer’s “bedding” label overrides the pillow’s tag.

Pause, shake and reposition

Stop the dryer periodically. Remove each pillow, shake it from several directions, gently redistribute the fill with your hands and return it in a different orientation. This interrupts packed areas and gives damp sections access to moving air. Whirlpool’s dryer manual specifically instructs users to shake and reposition feather and down pillows several times.

Check the center, not just the shell

Feel the thickest central area after each drying interval. A surface that feels warm and dry can hide moisture inside. A Whirlpool Use & Care Guide says feather and down pillows must be dry in the center to prevent mildew. Its example says those pillows may require two hours or longer, but that duration belongs to that particular manual and is not a universal timer. Continue with the permitted setting and periodic checks until the center is dry.

Where dryer balls fit

Whirlpool says dryer balls can help fluff pillows. Its separate explanation of wool dryer balls describes them as separating layers of laundry, which can reduce bunching around items. They are optional, not a guarantee against internal clumps, and they do not make a prohibited heat setting safe. The fundamentals remain adequate space, a compatible cycle, periodic fluffing and complete drying.

Why pillows clump and how to correct the problem

The pillow was packed into an overloaded drum

Symptom: The fill is pressed into one or two dense areas after washing or drying.

Correction: Re-run only a permitted drying cycle with room for movement, stopping to shake and reposition the pillow. On the next wash, use two similar pillows for balance when possible, but do not crowd the drum with additional laundry.

Detergent residue remains inside

Symptom: The pillow feels stiff, coated or unusually heavy after washing.

Correction: If the care label permits it, use an extra rinse without adding more detergent. Allow the pillow to drain and then dry it using the filling-appropriate method. Keep the detergent dose small on future washes.

Correction: Stop using the hotter setting. Follow the label and dryer manual from that point forward, using low heat for synthetic or no-heat air fluff for down/feather only when permitted. If the material or seams are visibly damaged, replace the pillow rather than repeatedly heating it.

The pillow is dry on the outside but damp inside

Symptom: The center feels cool, dense or damp even though the outer fabric feels dry.

Correction: Continue the allowed drying method, removing the pillow to shake and rotate it at intervals. Do not sleep on it or put it in a closet until the center is dry. Moisture left inside can create a mildew problem.

A memory-foam pillow was put in the washer

Symptom: Foam breaks apart, loses its shape or remains waterlogged.

Correction: Do not run another machine cycle. Follow the foam manufacturer’s recovery instructions, if any, and let the pillow air-dry fully. Whirlpool’s guidance is to avoid machine washing memory foam in the first place.

A complete wash-and-dry workflow

  1. Read both labels. Identify the fill and confirm whether the insert may be washed, tumble dried or air dried.
  2. Remove accessories. Separate pillowcases, protectors and removable covers.
  3. Inspect for damage. Repair or replace an item with an open seam or exposed filling before washing.
  4. Prepare the machines. Check capacity, cycle names, water limits and dryer restrictions in the appliance manuals.
  5. Choose the wash method. Use a gentle machine cycle for an approved synthetic, down or feather pillow, or hand wash when the label requires it. Keep memory foam out of the washer.
  6. Measure detergent. For the Whirlpool general machine-wash method, use about one tablespoon of liquid detergent and an extra rinse when available.
  7. Transfer promptly. Move the washed pillow to its permitted drying method without leaving it compressed and wet.
  8. Use compatible heat. Low heat is the general synthetic recommendation; no-heat air fluff is the general down/feather recommendation; air dry approved foam cleaning.
  9. Redistribute the fill. Pause to shake, fluff and rotate the pillows, especially down and feather models.
  10. Verify the center is dry. Check the thickest part before use or storage.

How often to wash pillows

Whirlpool’s pillow article gives a general recommendation to wash pillows at least twice a year. That is manufacturer advice, not a measured study statistic, and it does not override a pillow maker’s cleaning limit. Wash removable covers on their own schedule, and clean the insert whenever its label and condition make that appropriate. A pillow that cannot be safely immersed should not be washed more often simply to match a general interval.

Practical decision guide

  • Label says machine wash and tumble dry: Use a gentle cycle, a small liquid-detergent dose, balanced loading and the label-approved water and heat settings.
  • Label says machine wash but air dry: Wash gently, press out water with towels and support the pillow while it dries, turning it until the center is dry.
  • Label says hand wash: Press and squeeze in warm soapy water, rinse until clear, towel-press excess water and avoid twisting.
  • Label says spot clean only or identifies memory foam: Keep it out of the washer; blot or use the manufacturer-approved gentle cleaning method, then air-dry fully.
  • Label is missing or unreadable: Do not guess based on appearance. Contact the pillow maker or choose the least aggressive method that its documentation supports.

Final pre-use checklist

  • The care tag permits the wash and drying method you used.
  • The pillow was not crowded in the washer or dryer.
  • Detergent has been rinsed out and no suds remain.
  • The fill has been shaken and redistributed rather than left in a dense lump.
  • The center is completely dry, not merely the outer shell.
  • The cover, seams and filling show no new damage.
