Keep potentially exposed clothing sealed until you can treat it. For garments and bedding that tolerate the heat, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a household dryer on a high-temperature setting for 30 minutes. Washing alone generally will not kill bed bugs. Follow every garment’s care label, and place treated items in a clean sealed bag or fold them at home instead of leaving them on shared laundry surfaces.
The safest laundry plan depends on three things: whether the item can be washed, whether it can tolerate dryer heat, and whether you are using a private or shared laundry room. The steps below separate those decisions so you do not spread potentially live bugs while moving, washing or storing clothes.
What to do first: contain the clothing
Bag items before moving them
Put clothing, bedding and other washable textiles that may have contacted bed bugs into a sealed plastic bag before transporting them. EPA guidance recommends sealed bags when moving items from one area to another and for protecting clean items after treatment.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not carry loose clothing through your home, hallway or vehicle. Keep the bag closed until it is directly beside the washer or dryer. Avoid shaking garments or sorting them in an uncontrolled area; the practical objective is to keep any insects with the load rather than dispersing them.

If the exposure happened while traveling
EPA travel guidance advises unpacking directly into the washing machine and inspecting luggage carefully. Keep the travel bag closed until you can examine it in a suitable place. Clothing that is already bagged can be moved straight to the washer without being spread across a bed, sofa or floor.
Separate clothing from other belongings
Do not assume that only the clothes worn during the suspected exposure need attention. Separate potentially exposed clothing from other belongings and keep each group contained. Items that cannot go through the laundry process need a different decision, described below; do not open every bag simply to sort it in a living area.
Why the dryer matters more than washing
EPA’s consumer instruction is specific: “Put bedding and clothing in the dryer at high temperatures for 30 minutes to kill bed bugs (just washing will generally not kill bed bugs).” In practical terms, the high-temperature dryer period is the treatment step for dryer-safe clothing. A hot wash is not a substitute for that step.

University of Minnesota Extension advises using the hottest washer and dryer settings the fabric can tolerate. That advice still requires the care label to control the decision. A setting that is safe for cotton may damage wool, elastic, coated fabric or other construction, so there is no single washer temperature that is safe for every garment.
The guidance does not establish a guaranteed internal temperature for every appliance, load size or fabric. Use the stated 30-minute, high-temperature dryer instruction for items that are designed to tolerate it rather than converting it into a universal temperature claim.
Choose the right treatment path
| Item and equipment | Appropriate path | Handling requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Washable item that tolerates dryer heat | Wash according to the care label, then dry on high heat for 30 minutes. | Keep it bagged until it is loaded; bag the clean item after drying. |
| Item that cannot be washed but permits dryer heat | Use dryer treatment only if the care label permits the required heat. | Follow the item’s care instructions and avoid adding a wash cycle that the item cannot tolerate. |
| Item that cannot tolerate dryer heat | Ask a professional dry-cleaning service about handling it. | Tell the service the item may contain bed bugs and keep it bagged until just before loading. |
| Item with an unusual construction or unclear care instructions | Do not assume a home treatment is safe or effective. | Ask a qualified cleaner or pest professional for an item-specific method. |
These are handling pathways, not interchangeable promises. In particular, washing-only, low-heat drying and an improvised household setting are not established substitutes for the EPA’s high-temperature dryer instruction.
Step-by-step: washer plus dryer at home
- Read the care label before opening the bag. Confirm that the garment or textile can tolerate both a wash cycle and the dryer temperature you intend to use. Group items only when their care instructions are compatible.
- Move the sealed bag to the laundry area. Keep it closed while you transport it. Set up the washer or dryer first so the bag does not have to sit open while you search for settings.
- Load directly from the bag. Open the bag beside the washer and place the contents straight into the machine. Do not put exposed clothes on the floor, a bed, a chair or a countertop while sorting.
- Wash at the hottest fabric-safe setting. Use the hottest washer setting the care label allows, following University of Minnesota Extension guidance. If a fabric cannot tolerate a hot wash, do not force it; choose the dryer-only or professional-cleaning path that its label permits.
- Transfer promptly to the dryer. For dryer-safe items, move the load into the dryer without spreading it around the laundry room. The EPA treatment is high-temperature drying for 30 minutes.
- Run the full 30-minute high-temperature treatment. Use the dryer’s high setting only when the item’s care instructions allow it. Do not describe a shorter, cooler or unverified cycle as equivalent to the EPA instruction.
- Remove treated items directly into a clean bag. EPA guidance recommends protecting clean items after treatment. Use a clean sealed bag rather than the bag that held the potentially exposed clothing.
- Store or fold in a controlled place. Keep the clean load bagged, or fold it at home away from shared laundry tables and baskets. Do not return treated clothing to an unexamined suitcase or storage area.
Plan the load before you open the bag
Sorting decisions should happen while the clothing is still contained. Read labels, identify pieces that need professional cleaning and check that you have enough clean bags for finished laundry. If several items have different care instructions, divide them into compatible groups without spreading them across household surfaces. A bag can remain closed while you arrange the machines and decide which group goes first.

- Large Capacity Dryer: This front load dryer has a large, 7.0 cubic foot capacity to give clothes, bedding, and other household fabric items space to move freely and dry thoroughly
Do not make a larger load simply to save a cycle if doing so combines items that require incompatible settings. The extension recommendation is to use the hottest setting each fabric can tolerate, not the hottest setting for the least-sensitive item. When an item’s label is unclear, leave it sealed and obtain item-specific advice rather than guessing.
Using a shared laundry room or laundromat
Before leaving home
Carry the dirty load in a sealed bag. Bring clean bags for the treated clothes; the bag used for transport should not automatically become the storage bag for the finished laundry.
At the washer
EPA’s laundromat guidance recommends unpacking bagged laundry directly into the washer. Do not sort loose garments on a folding table or in a communal basket. Use the hottest temperature the fabric can withstand, consistent with the care label.
At the dryer
For dryer-safe clothing, use high heat for 30 minutes, the EPA’s stated treatment period. Move the finished items directly from the dryer into a clean bag. If the machine stops early or the item’s care label prohibits high heat, do not claim that the load received the recommended treatment; use the appropriate alternative for that item.

Inspect laundry baskets and folding tables before using them. EPA advises bagging clean laundry or folding it at home. Folding at home also avoids placing treated clothing on a surface that another customer may have used.
Wash the laundry bag when appropriate
EPA’s “Avoid Bed Bugs at the Laundromat” flyer, dated December 2017, advises washing and drying cloth laundry bags with the clothing. If you use a reusable cloth bag, include it in the load when its care instructions permit; otherwise keep it sealed and ask a professional cleaner how to handle it.
Private machines versus a laundromat
Both options can follow the same core sequence: sealed transport, direct loading, the hottest fabric-safe settings and protected storage afterward. A private machine lets you move from washer to dryer without shared tables or baskets. A laundromat is still practical when you bring the load sealed, use the machine directly and carry clean bags for the finished items.

You do not need to purchase a new clothes dryer solely because exposure is possible. An existing household dryer or a shared dryer can provide the relevant treatment when the garment’s label permits high heat. The important equipment question is access to a suitable high-temperature cycle, not a particular brand or model.
Delicate, non-washable and heat-sensitive items
Non-washable but dryer-safe
Some items cannot be washed but can tolerate dryer heat. If the care label permits the dryer treatment, place the item in the dryer and follow the label’s restrictions. The relevant question is not whether the item can be washed; it is whether it can safely receive the required heat.
Items that cannot tolerate dryer heat
Do not promise a universal home method for heat-sensitive clothing, accessories or unusual fabrics. University of Minnesota Extension recommends notifying a dry-cleaning service that an item may contain bed bugs and keeping it in a bag until just before loading. Call ahead so the cleaner can give you handling instructions rather than receiving an unannounced loose item.
Unclear labels or complex construction
If the care label is missing, contradictory or too general to establish a safe dryer setting, do not guess. Examples include garments with bonded layers, specialty coatings, delicate trim or components that may deform. Ask a qualified cleaner or pest professional about that specific item. Consumer guidance does not establish one safe treatment for every fabric, accessory or garment construction.
How the options compare
- Washer plus dryer: Best for washable items that tolerate the required heat. Washing handles ordinary cleaning, while the high-temperature dryer period supplies the stated bed bug treatment.
- Dryer-only: Appropriate only for an item that cannot be washed but whose care label permits the high-temperature dryer instruction. Do not add a wash cycle that could damage it.
- Professional cleaning: The route for items that cannot tolerate dryer heat or need specialized handling. Disclosure and sealed transport let the cleaner plan how to receive the item.
- Waiting for access: If no suitable dryer is available, leave the clothing sealed until you can use a laundromat, household machine or qualified cleaner. Air-drying or an unspecified low-heat cycle is not established as an equivalent treatment.
Choose by fabric heat tolerance first, then by whether the item is washable and what equipment you can access. Clean storage is part of every option: a treated item can be re-exposed if it is placed on a shared surface or in an unchecked bag.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
- Putting exposed clothes straight into a hamper: Use a sealed bag instead, so the hamper and nearby clothing are not exposed during transport.
- Relying on washing alone: EPA says washing alone generally will not kill bed bugs. For items that tolerate it, complete the high-temperature dryer treatment.
- Choosing a hot wash without checking the label: Use the hottest setting the fabric can withstand, not the hottest setting available on the machine.
- Using low heat and assuming it is equivalent: The cited guidance specifies high-temperature drying for 30 minutes; it does not validate an unspecified low-heat cycle as a replacement.
- Sorting on a shared folding table: Unpack directly into the washer and fold treated items at home or keep them in a clean bag.
- Reusing the transport bag for clean laundry: Put dried items into a clean sealed bag.
- Taking a suspect item to dry cleaning without warning: Tell the service about the possible exposure and keep the item bagged until loading.
- Putting treated clothes back into unchecked luggage: Inspect luggage carefully, particularly after travel, before returning clean clothing to it.
- Leaving finished clothes in a communal basket: Remove them directly from the dryer into a clean bag and postpone folding until home.
- Mixing treated and untreated items: Keep each group separate until every piece has completed its appropriate process.
What to do when you do not have a dryer
The cited consumer guidance does not establish washing alone, air-drying, low heat or another improvised household method as a reliable substitute for the EPA’s high-temperature dryer instruction. Keep the clothing sealed while you arrange access to a dryer, a laundromat or a professional cleaner. Do not spread the load around your home while deciding.
If you use a laundromat, follow the sealed-bag, direct-loading and clean-bag steps above. A household dryer is useful because of the treatment it provides, but the guidance does not require buying a new machine; an existing household dryer or a shared dryer can be used when the fabric and access conditions are suitable.

How to keep treated laundry protected
Treatment ends only when the clothing has completed the appropriate process and is protected from re-exposure. Place clean items in a clean sealed bag, or fold them at home. Keep them away from shared baskets, tables and other surfaces until you are ready to put them away.
Use separate bags for potentially exposed items and treated items. Do not mix clean laundry with clothing that is still awaiting a decision about washing, drying or professional cleaning. If a garment must remain bagged for a cleaner, leave it sealed until the cleaner is ready to load it.
After travel, inspect luggage before putting treated clothing back inside. The same separation principle applies to laundry baskets and storage areas: keep the finished load away from anything that has not been examined or treated. If you are uncertain whether a container is clean, use a clean bag instead of risking the finished clothing.
A simple decision checklist
- Is the clothing sealed before transport?
- Does the care label allow the planned washer and dryer settings?
- Can the item receive high-temperature dryer treatment for 30 minutes?
- If it cannot, has a dry-cleaning service or pest professional been consulted?
- Will the load go directly from the bag into the washer or dryer?
- Will treated laundry go into a clean bag or be folded at home?
- Have travel luggage, laundry baskets and shared folding surfaces been kept separate from the clean load?
- Do you have a separate clean bag ready before the dryer finishes?
- Have items with different care labels been kept in compatible groups?
If the answer to any item-specific heat question is unclear, pause with the clothing sealed and get advice for that garment instead of risking fabric damage or an ineffective treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a hot wash instead of a hot dryer?
No. EPA distinguishes washing from the treatment step and says washing alone generally will not kill bed bugs. Use high-temperature drying for 30 minutes when the care label allows.
What should I do with a reusable cloth laundry bag?
EPA’s December 2017 laundromat flyer advises washing and drying cloth laundry bags with the clothing when their care instructions permit. Otherwise keep the bag sealed and ask a professional cleaner how to handle it.
The Bottom Line
Contain first, then choose the fabric-safe path. For washable or dryer-safe items, EPA recommends high-temperature drying for 30 minutes; washing alone is generally not enough. Load directly from the sealed bag, follow care labels, and put finished laundry into a clean sealed bag or fold it at home. Keep heat-sensitive or unclear items bagged and disclose possible exposure to a professional cleaner.
