To clean a down jacket without harming its insulation, follow the jacket’s care label first. If machine washing is permitted, use a gentle cycle and a cleaner formulated for down; rinse thoroughly, then tumble dry on low heat if the label allows. Pause to separate clumps, and keep drying until the fill is evenly distributed and completely dry. The right water temperature, cycle and drying method vary by garment, so there is no safe setting that applies to every down jacket.

Down is warm because its clusters trap air. Washing does not automatically ruin that structure, but unsuitable detergent, aggressive agitation, inadequate rinsing or damp storage can leave the fill clumped and reduce loft. The safest approach is therefore a label-led process rather than a single universal recipe. Manufacturer instructions for Arc’teryx, Patagonia and REI overlap on gentle handling and patient low-heat drying, but they differ on details such as wash temperature and what to do when no dryer is available.

Check whether your jacket can be washed at home

Read the care label before washing. Follow the instructions for your specific jacket and shell fabric, including any restrictions on machine washing or tumble drying. The garment maker’s current instructions take priority over general advice: the manufacturers’ own recommendations differ on water temperature, and some jackets may have different care requirements from others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because a jacket can come out clean but still lose loft if it is washed or dried in a way its materials cannot tolerate. If the label is unclear, check the maker’s current guidance for the exact garment rather than assuming that another down jacket’s settings are suitable.

Look for separate instructions covering washing, rinsing, drying and storage. A label that permits washing does not necessarily permit tumble drying, and a label that names a particular temperature should override a general setting suggested elsewhere. If the label directs you to professional care or gives instructions you cannot reproduce safely, use the maker’s recommended service instead of improvising.

Gather the supplies and choose a washer

  • Down-specific cleaner: Patagonia and Arc’teryx recommend a cleaner formulated for down. Follow the product’s dosing directions. Patagonia says traditional detergent can strip down’s natural oils and affect loft; Arc’teryx also cautions against detergent that is not designed for down. These are manufacturers’ care explanations, not results from a quantified independent test. Nikwax Down Wash Direct is a named example in REI and Patagonia care guidance, while Arc’teryx names its Nu Down Detergent. A named product is optional; the important match is a cleaner whose label says it is formulated for down.
  • A front-loading washer, if available: Patagonia and REI prefer front-loaders. A top-loader may be suitable if the jacket’s instructions allow it; Patagonia says to use a hand-wash or delicate setting. Do not assume that every top-loader or agitator is appropriate for every garment.
  • A low-heat dryer, if the label permits tumble drying: Tumble drying is the common recommendation in the cited manufacturer and outdoor-retailer guidance, but it is not permission to override a label that says otherwise.
  • Clean tennis balls or dryer balls: These are optional aids for separating clumps during drying. You do not need to buy dryer balls if you already have clean tennis balls. Arc’teryx explicitly permits either option, and Patagonia and REI support clean tennis balls.
  • A mesh laundry bag, if useful: Arc’teryx says a laundry net can help protect the garment. It is an optional safeguard, not a substitute for following the care label.
  • A clean, large heavy-cotton towel, if needed: Patagonia suggests a towel as another aid during drying. It is an alternative to balls, not a requirement.

There is no stated need to purchase every accessory. A down-formulated cleaner is the product choice emphasized by the manufacturers; balls, a towel and a mesh bag are optional process aids. Choose them based on what the jacket’s label allows and what you already have.

Prepare the jacket and washer

  1. Close and secure the garment. Fasten zippers and other closures, loosen drawcords as appropriate, and secure hook-and-loop cuffs. Arc’teryx includes these steps in its preparation guidance.
  2. Use a laundry net if you have one. It may help protect the jacket in the wash. Make sure the care label does not prohibit using one, and do not force a bulky jacket into a bag that compresses it tightly.
  3. Choose the gentlest suitable cycle. Use the jacket’s label and the washer type to guide the choice. A top-loader should be used only if the jacket’s instructions allow it; where allowed, choose a hand-wash or delicate setting. A front-loader is the preferred option in Patagonia and REI guidance because it is the machine type those sources recommend for this task.
  4. Set the water temperature from the jacket’s instructions. Do not combine temperature recommendations from different makers into a universal rule. Arc’teryx’s guide specifies a medium setting of 40°C/104°F, while Patagonia’s general down-care page recommends cold water. The label for your jacket resolves that difference.
  5. Add down cleaner according to its directions. Do not guess at the dose or assume that more cleaner will improve the result. Excess product creates more residue to remove and does not replace a thorough rinse.
  6. Check the machine before starting. The drum should be free of leftover bleach, softener or other laundry products. Nothing in the cited guidance makes bleach or softener appropriate for down, so do not add either one to the wash.

Wash gently and rinse thoroughly

Run the gentle cycle that is appropriate for the jacket. Avoid bleach and fabric softener: both Patagonia and Arc’teryx advise against them in their down-care instructions. When the wash is complete, make sure detergent has been rinsed out rather than left in the fill. Arc’teryx specifically recommends a double rinse. If the garment’s instructions specify another rinse procedure, follow those instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rinsing deserves care because cleaning residue is not the goal; the jacket should leave the wash ready for drying, not coated with leftover product. Do not use a harsher cycle or a different temperature to compensate for uncertainty about how clean the garment is. If the jacket’s label or cleaner directions call for an additional rinse, use it. The endpoint is a jacket with no obvious cleaner residue and fill that can be redistributed during drying.

Do not wring, twist or aggressively squeeze the jacket as a substitute for a proper rinse. The supplied manufacturer procedures emphasize gentle machine handling and thorough rinsing; follow those procedures rather than adding force. When the cycle ends, move promptly to the label-approved drying method so the wet fill is not left compressed for an extended period.

Dry the jacket slowly, checking the fill as you go

  1. Put the jacket in the dryer only if its label allows it. Select low heat. Add two clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help separate the down as the jacket tumbles. Patagonia also suggests a large, heavy-cotton towel as an alternative aid. These items help break up clumps; they do not make high heat safe.
  2. Start with a manageable cycle. Down garments hold substantial moisture, so expect to run more than one cycle. Use the dryer’s low-heat setting and keep the jacket’s care instructions visible while you work. If your machine has a temperature choice that is more specific than “low,” select the setting the maker identifies as safe.
  3. Pause the dryer periodically. Turn the garment and inspect its baffles, the stitched compartments that hold the fill. If you find clumps, gently pull them apart by hand before restarting the dryer. Arc’teryx advises turning the garment periodically; Patagonia’s care guidance also recommends separating clumps manually.
  4. Redistribute the fill. Work through the baffles rather than checking only the collar or outer panels. Persistent dense spots indicate that the down has not yet regained an even distribution. Separate those areas gently, then return the jacket to the low-heat cycle.
  5. Continue in cycles until the fill is evenly distributed and fully dry. A jacket can feel dry on the outside while down inside remains damp. Use the fill’s condition, not a timer alone, as the endpoint. The jacket should be lump-free, with no cool or heavy damp areas inside its compartments.
  6. Let it finish before packing or storing it. Arc’teryx warns that storing down while damp can lead to clumping or mould. Leave the jacket out of storage until you have checked that the fill is completely dry.

Drying can take longer than one cycle. REI’s guidance, accessed in 2026, estimates one to three hours on low heat. Arc’teryx’s guidance, also accessed in 2026, says to be prepared for upwards of three hours. Those are practical estimates from different sources, not guarantees: the jacket, dryer and conditions affect the time required. Continue checking and drying rather than stopping as soon as one estimate has elapsed.

Do not interpret “low heat” as “brief heat.” The goal is controlled, repeated drying with inspections between cycles. Stopping when the shell feels dry can leave moisture hidden in the center of a baffle. Conversely, increasing the temperature to shorten the process ignores the label-first rule and the manufacturers’ low-heat recommendations.

How to tell when the jacket is really dry

Check several baffles, not just one easy-to-reach area. The fill should feel light and evenly spread rather than packed into hard lumps. Inspect areas that tend to stay damp, such as thick seams, the hood, shoulders and lower compartments. If any section remains dense, cool or visibly clumped, continue the label-approved low-heat process and separate that section by hand during a pause.

Fully dry is the practical endpoint, not a particular number of minutes. REI’s instruction to keep resetting the timer until the jacket is “lump-free and fully dry” captures the test better than a fixed schedule. Once dry, allow the jacket to cool and check it again before placing it in a closet or bag. If clumps reappear while cooling, redistribute them and dry again.

If you do not have a suitable dryer

Follow the maker’s current recommendation for your jacket. Arc’teryx recommends taking a jacket to a ReBIRD Service Centre when a dryer is unavailable and cautions that air drying alone may not restore the same loft and may affect performance. The advice is specific to that maker’s care guidance, but it highlights why air drying should not be assumed to produce the same result as its recommended process.

There is also an older alternative in Patagonia’s down-care story, published around 2011: lay the jacket flat on a towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight, flip it periodically, and separate clumps by hand. That article says air drying can take from a couple of days to more than a week depending on humidity. Because this older advice conflicts with Arc’teryx’s current guidance, treat it as an alternative described by that older source—not a universal method—and check the instructions for your own jacket before using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your label permits flat air drying, use the exact method and position the maker specifies. Do not infer that hanging, direct sunlight or an improvised heat source is acceptable. The older Patagonia method specifically calls for laying the jacket flat, keeping it out of direct sunlight, flipping it and separating clumps periodically. It also warns through its long time estimate that this is a sustained process, not an overnight shortcut.

If you cannot follow the jacket maker’s recommended drying method, do not pack the jacket damp. Seek a maker-approved service option or guidance for the exact garment rather than relying on a general air-drying recipe.

Washer and drying-method comparison

A front-loading washer is the preferred machine in Patagonia and REI guidance. A top-loader is not automatically forbidden, but it should be used only when the jacket’s own instructions allow it; Patagonia’s guidance limits that option to a hand-wash or delicate setting. This is a garment-specific decision, not a claim that one machine type is safe for every down jacket.

For cleaners, the supported comparison is between a down-specific formula and an unspecified traditional detergent. The cited manufacturers recommend the down-specific option and explain that ordinary detergent may affect natural oils and loft. Compare the product label’s compatibility and dosing instructions rather than assuming that a higher price or a particular brand guarantees a better result. Nikwax Down Wash Direct and Arc’teryx Nu Down Detergent are named examples, not mandatory purchases.

For drying, low-heat tumbling with clean tennis balls or dryer balls is the common recommendation when the label permits it. A heavy-cotton towel is another aid mentioned by Patagonia. Professional service is the more clearly supported path when a dryer is unavailable in Arc’teryx’s current guidance, while the older Patagonia article describes carefully managed flat air drying. Because the sources disagree and the Patagonia advice dates to around 2011, the jacket maker’s current instructions should decide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming all down jackets share one wash temperature. Manufacturer guidance differs; follow the temperature on your garment’s label. Arc’teryx cites 40°C/104°F, while Patagonia’s general page cites cold water.
  • Using a washer or cycle the jacket’s instructions do not allow. Front-loaders are preferred by Patagonia and REI, but even a suitable machine does not override garment-specific restrictions.
  • Using bleach, fabric softener or an unsuitable detergent. The cited manufacturers advise a down-formulated cleaner and advise against bleach and fabric softener.
  • Overdosing cleaner. Follow the cleaner’s directions; extra product does not remove the need for rinsing and may leave more residue.
  • Skipping the second rinse when the maker calls for it. Arc’teryx recommends a double rinse. Follow your own label if it specifies another procedure.
  • Stopping the rinse or dryer process too soon. Follow the jacket’s rinse instructions, and keep drying until the down is lump-free and fully dry.
  • Applying high heat without permission from the label. The cited drying recommendations call for low heat when tumble drying is allowed.
  • Ignoring clumps between cycles. Turn the jacket, inspect its baffles and separate persistent clumps by hand instead of assuming the balls will do everything.
  • Storing the jacket damp. Wait until the fill is fully dry to reduce the risk of clumping or mould.
  • Treating an old air-drying instruction as universal. Patagonia’s approximately 2011 advice conflicts with Arc’teryx’s current service-centre recommendation. Use the current instructions for your own garment.

Quick decision guide

  • The label permits machine washing and tumble drying: Use a gentle, label-appropriate wash with down cleaner, rinse well, and dry on low with clean balls while checking and separating clumps.
  • The label permits washing but not tumble drying: Do not use the dryer instructions in this guide as permission to do so. Check the maker’s current drying advice for that garment.
  • You have a top-loader: Use it only if the jacket’s instructions allow it; Patagonia’s guidance specifies hand-wash or delicate for a top-loader.
  • You have no suitable dryer: Check the maker’s current recommendation. Sources disagree about air drying, so do not assume it will restore the jacket’s loft in the same way.
  • You have clean tennis balls but no dryer balls: Use the clean tennis balls if the label permits low-heat tumble drying; buying dryer balls is not necessary.
  • The jacket still has clumps or feels damp after drying: Continue low-heat cycles if the label permits, pausing to separate clumps, until the fill is evenly distributed and completely dry.
  • You are unsure whether the jacket is safe to wash: Stop and check the exact garment’s current care instructions or use the maker’s approved service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wash a down jacket?

Start with the garment’s care label. If it permits machine washing, use a gentle cycle, a down-specific cleaner and the label-approved water temperature. A front-loader is preferred by Patagonia and REI; use a top-loader only when the jacket’s instructions allow it and choose hand-wash or delicate. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, then rinse thoroughly; Arc’teryx recommends two rinses.

Can I use regular laundry detergent?

The cited Patagonia and Arc’teryx guidance recommends a cleaner formulated for down instead. Patagonia says traditional detergent can strip down’s natural oils and affect loft. Follow the cleaner’s dosing instructions; Nikwax Down Wash Direct and Arc’teryx Nu Down Detergent are named examples, but no particular purchase is required.

What water temperature should I use?

Use the temperature on your jacket’s label. The manufacturer guidance is not uniform: Arc’teryx specifies 40°C/104°F in one guide, while Patagonia’s general down-care page recommends cold water. Do not apply either setting universally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I dry a down jacket?

If the label permits tumble drying, use low heat with two clean tennis balls or dryer balls; Patagonia also suggests a large heavy-cotton towel as an alternative aid. Pause periodically, turn the jacket, inspect the baffles and gently separate clumps by hand. Continue until the fill is evenly distributed, lump-free and completely dry.

How long does down-jacket drying take?

REI estimates one to three hours on low heat, while Arc’teryx says to be prepared for upwards of three hours. These are practical estimates, not guarantees. The jacket’s fill condition is the endpoint, so keep checking and running label-approved cycles until it is fully dry.

What if I do not have access to a drying machine?

Follow the jacket maker’s current recommendation. Arc’teryx recommends a ReBIRD Service Centre and cautions that air drying alone may not restore the same loft. An older Patagonia story from around 2011 describes flat drying on a towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight, with periodic flipping and clump separation; it says the process can take a couple of days to more than a week. Because those instructions conflict, do not treat the older method as universal.

Can I store my down jacket as soon as the outside feels dry?

No. Moisture can remain inside the baffles even when the shell feels dry. Check the fill throughout the jacket and continue the label-approved drying process until it is evenly distributed, lump-free and fully dry. Arc’teryx warns that damp storage can cause clumping or mould.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are dryer balls necessary?

No. Dryer balls are optional. Clean tennis balls perform the same supporting role in the cited guidance, and Patagonia also mentions a large heavy-cotton towel. Whatever aid you use, it does not replace low heat, periodic inspections or complete drying.

The Bottom Line

Let the jacket label decide whether and how you wash it. When machine care is allowed, use a down-specific cleaner, a gentle label-approved cycle and a thorough rinse; avoid bleach and fabric softener. Tumble dry on low only when permitted, using clean tennis balls or dryer balls, pausing to separate clumps until every baffle is evenly filled and completely dry. If no suitable dryer is available, follow the maker’s current service or drying guidance, and never pack the jacket while damp.
