Plan for the specific island, not for an imagined standard of island services: ferry access, shops, facilities and onward transport vary considerably. Check your route and local rules before setting out, carry what you need for the day, and give residents, wildlife and the landscape room.
Start with the island and settlement you will actually visit
Scottish islands are not interchangeable. The Scottish Government’s Scottish Islands Typology compares island groups by population, amenities and ferry connections. It identifies some groups as having low or lowest access to amenities and ferry services. Those broad categories are useful for planning, but they do not tell you whether a particular business is open on your travel date or how far it is from your arrival point.
Before booking, check the specific settlement for accommodation, shops, toilets, fuel and drinking-water refill points. Confirm opening information directly where possible, and consider the distance from the ferry landing to the services you expect to use. Avoid treating local services as an unlimited convenience layer: arrive prepared, respect residents’ privacy and access needs, and take away waste rather than assuming facilities can absorb it.

Check ferry arrangements and onward transport close to departure
Use the ferry operator’s current information for the route you plan to take. Check the sailing date, service status, timetable, ticket or reservation requirements, and any onward connection or local transport. A published timetable is not a guarantee of a particular sailing, so leave flexibility in plans that depend on a tight connection.

For example, CalMac’s Ardmhor–Eriskay route page tells passengers to check the latest service status. Follow the equivalent current operator guidance for your own route rather than relying on details copied from an old itinerary.
Access can be especially limited on smaller outlying islands. The Scottish Government’s 2024 typology overview reports that Canna and Sanday averaged 0.3 scheduled ferry crossings per day in winter 2023/4, with an average crossing just under three hours. That is historical context, not a current timetable or a forecast for your trip. Transport Scotland’s Vessels and Ports Plan sets out long-term investment needs to 2045 in response to reliability and resilience challenges; it does not predict disruption on any individual sailing.

Pack for limited shops, refill points and facilities
Carry enough drinking water and provisions for the activity you have planned, including reasonable contingency for a longer walk or delay. Do not assume a shop, fuel outlet, public toilet or refill point will be open or nearby. VisitScotland advises walkers and campers to carry sufficient water where shops or refill points may be limited or unavailable.
- Do not drink untreated water directly from rivers, streams or burns. VisitScotland warns that contaminants may not be visible; treat natural water appropriately.
- For walking, take navigation suitable for the route and conditions. A destination-specific paper map is a useful physical backup; pair it with a compass if you know how to use one.
- Prepare for changing weather with warm layers and waterproofs. A headtorch and emergency snacks can also be useful, as recommended in VisitScotland’s camping and outdoor safety guidance.
Check the map’s coverage against your actual island and route rather than assuming a general Scotland map contains the detail you need.

Follow access guidance and local rules
The Scottish Outdoor Access Code is built around three principles: respect other people, care for the environment and take responsibility for your actions. Access rights come with responsibilities, and local restrictions can apply. Check current notices for access restrictions, parking, camping, fires and protected areas before your visit.
Wild camping guidance applies to most unenclosed land, subject to the Code and local rules. It is not a licence to camp anywhere. VisitScotland advises avoiding enclosed fields, homes and private gardens, crowded places already under pressure, and sensitive ground. Keep groups small and quiet, and move on if a spot is busy.

- Take all belongings and litter away, and avoid damaging vegetation.
- Use a stove where possible. Avoid fires in dry periods and sensitive locations, and follow local fire advice.
- Use public toilets where available. If outdoor toileting is unavoidable, follow reliable guidance and stay at least 30 metres from open water, as described in the Scottish Government’s Outdoor Access Code guidance.
- Keep livestock and wildlife undisturbed, and respect residents’ privacy and routes through their communities.
Choose an overnight option that fits the place
A managed campsite may be the more suitable choice if you need toilets, waste facilities or other working amenities. Wild camping asks more of you: check the rules, choose a low-impact location, arrive self-sufficient and leave no trace. The appropriate option depends on local restrictions, facilities, your experience and the sensitivity of the site.

That advice is specific to that locality; check the relevant local authority’s rules for other islands rather than applying it as a universal rule.

Watch wildlife without approaching or disturbing it
Wildlife viewing is a privilege, not an entitlement to get closer. NatureScot advises visitors not to intentionally or recklessly disturb protected wildlife, to take extra care during breeding seasons and to move away when their presence causes significant disturbance. Watch for changes in an animal’s behaviour rather than waiting for it to flee.
Keep dogs under close control, follow signs and wardens’ instructions, and use the NatureScot protected-species guidance and relevant wildlife codes. When viewing marine life, follow the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code.
