The built-in way to see a Vintage Story server’s installed mods is to run /moddb list in server chat or in the server console. You need administrator or equivalent server-control privileges. The command prints the list known to the running server, so it is more reliable than guessing from filenames. If your server is managed with the documented Docker wrapper, use docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list"; that wrapper removes the leading slash before sending the command.
Run the built-in mod-list command
Vintage Story provides the moddb server-command group for managing and inspecting mods. Its list subcommand displays the mods installed on the server instance that is currently running.

- Open the server’s in-game chat as an administrator, or attach to the server’s command console.
- Enter
/moddb list, including the leading slash when you are typing in normal server chat or a console that accepts standard Vintage Story commands. - Submit the command and read the server-generated output. This is the authoritative formatted list for that running installation.
The command must be executed on the server. A regular player cannot use it merely by joining the world unless the account has been granted the required server privileges.
Use the Docker command when the server runs in the documented wrapper
Some administrators operate Vintage Story in a Docker Compose setup that exposes a wrapper script. In that arrangement, run the command from the host directory containing the Compose configuration:

docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list"The wrapper passes the text to Vintage Story as a server command, so the text inside the quotes is written as moddb list without the leading slash. Do not add a second slash inside the quoted argument unless your wrapper’s own documentation specifically requires one.
If Docker reports that the service is not running, start the Compose service first using the procedure for your installation, then repeat the command. If the service name differs from vintagestory, use the service name shown in your Compose file rather than changing the Vintage Story command itself.
Which method should you use?

What the command output means
/moddb list reports what the server has loaded or recognizes in its mod database. That list can contain different categories of mods, including server-side, universal and client-side-only content. A mod appearing in the server list does not necessarily mean every player must download it.

Server-side mods
Server-side mods run on the server and do not need to be copied to every client in order for the server to provide their functionality. They can therefore appear in the installed list even though a joining player never receives a matching download.
Universal mods
Universal mods are identified as applicable to both sides. When a player joins, Vintage Story can offer the server’s server-side or universal mod files through the normal download flow, subject to the game’s compatibility checks and the server’s configuration.
Client-side-only mods
Client-side-only mods are not automatically supplied by the server. A player who needs one must install it manually in that server’s ModsByServer folder. Consequently, a friend may not see every item from /moddb list in the files downloaded during connection: the two lists answer different questions.

Cross-check the files and configured paths
If you need to verify what is physically present on disk, inspect the dedicated server’s data directory. A normal installation has a Mods folder and a serverconfig.json file. The ModPaths setting in serverconfig.json tells the server which directories it searches for mods.
- Locate the data directory used by the dedicated server process, not an unrelated client installation.
- Open
serverconfig.jsonand find theModPathskey. - Resolve each configured path relative to the server’s documented data location, if the path is relative.
- Inspect those directories for mod archives, commonly ZIP files, and compare their names with the output of
/moddb list. - If you copied a mod manually, make sure its archive is in a directory listed by
ModPaths. Restart the server when that installation requires a restart or does not support a live reload.
Folder inspection can reveal an archive that is misplaced, duplicated or not being loaded. It can also show where a file came from. However, it is not the direct formatted mod list: an archive may be ignored because it is outside every configured path, incompatible with the current game version, malformed, or otherwise not loaded by the server.
When /moddb list fails
“Unknown command” or a syntax error
Run /help moddb on the live server. The command reference and the in-game .chb handbook are better checks for the exact version you are running than a static web page. Vintage Story’s long command documentation can become outdated as the game changes, while the live help output reflects the installed build and available command syntax.

If /help moddb also fails, verify that you are connected to the server’s command environment rather than typing into an operating-system shell or an unrelated client console. Confirm the server is fully started and that the account has permission to view or execute server commands.
The command runs but shows fewer mods than expected
- Check the
ModPathsentries inserverconfig.json; the archive may be in a directory the server never scans. - Confirm that the file is a valid mod archive and was copied to the server data directory rather than only to your local game installation.
- Restart the server if the installation method requires a restart before newly copied files are discovered.
- Compare the server output with the actual files in every configured path. The physical presence of a ZIP file does not prove that the server accepted it.
A player cannot download a mod while joining
First identify the mod’s side classification. The automatic join flow applies to mods tagged Server-side or Universal. A client-side-only mod is intentionally not supplied by the server; the player must place that mod in the server-specific ModsByServer folder on the client.
If the mod should be server-side or universal but the player still cannot receive it, check that the server is actually loading the file, that the player is joining the intended server, and that both sides meet the mod’s compatibility requirements. The installed list and the download prompt are not interchangeable: the former covers the server’s recognized installation, while the latter covers files the game determines the client needs.

Docker returns a container or service error
- Check that the Compose service is running and that you are executing the command from the directory containing the correct Compose configuration.
- Use the service name defined by your file if it is not
vintagestory. - Keep the wrapper form exactly as documented:
./server.sh command "moddb list". The wrapper removes the slash when forwarding the command. - If the wrapper’s help output differs, use its documented command-forwarding syntax and then verify the result with the server’s own
/help moddb.
Why a friend may not see the same mod list
There are three separate views administrators and players often confuse:
- Installed on the server: the result of
/moddb list, including server-side content that a client never downloads. - Present in configured folders: the archives found under directories named by
ModPaths, whether or not the server successfully loads each one. - Sent to a joining client: the server-side and universal files Vintage Story identifies as required for that connection. Client-side-only files are excluded from automatic delivery.
Therefore, a player who only watches the join prompt cannot reconstruct the complete server installation. Conversely, an administrator who reads the server list should not assume every listed mod will appear in the player’s download directory.
Practical administrator checklist
- Use an administrator or server-control account.
- Run
/moddb listin server chat or the attached server console. - For the documented Docker setup, run
docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list". - Use
/help moddband the in-game.chbhandbook when the command is unavailable or behaves differently. - Check
serverconfig.jsonand itsModPathsvalue when files and the command output disagree. - Remember that joining players receive only server-side or universal files identified as needed; client-side-only mods belong in the client’s
ModsByServerfolder.
Frequently needed distinction: list versus file audit
Choose /moddb list when the question is “What mods does this running server know about?” Choose a filesystem audit when the question is “Which archives were copied here, and which directories does the configuration scan?” For a reliable diagnosis, perform both checks in that order: obtain the live server list first, then inspect ModPaths only if a file is missing, unexpectedly present, or failing to reach a player.
