To view Google Maps Timeline, use the Google Maps app on a signed-in phone or tablet: tap your profile picture or initial, choose Your Timeline, and select a date from the calendar. To remove history, delete an individual visit, a selected period, or all Timeline data from the app. Deletion is permanent, and it does not automatically remove every location-related record held by other Google services.
What Google Maps Timeline contains
Timeline is Google Maps’ record of places you visited and routes you traveled. It is useful when you need to reconstruct a trip, find a place you visited on a particular day, or remove a location record you no longer want stored.
Timeline is managed from the Google Maps mobile app. Google’s computer help says Timeline is not available in Maps on a computer because the data comes directly from your device. If you open Maps in a desktop browser and cannot find Your Timeline, that is expected; use the app on a phone or tablet instead.

Choose what you want to do before changing anything
Deleting a single visit, removing a period, disabling future collection, and clearing every copy are different tasks. Decide which result you need first.

Read the confirmation screen carefully. Google warns that deleted Timeline data cannot be recovered.
How to view your Google Maps Timeline
Android phones and tablets
- Open the Google Maps app and sign in to the account associated with the Timeline.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Your Timeline.
- Use the calendar controls to choose the date you want to inspect.
- Review the visits and route information shown for that day. Open an individual visit if you need to edit or remove it.
Google’s Android instructions for this Timeline entry point require Maps version 11.106 or later. If your menus do not match, install the latest available Maps update, restart the app, and check that you are using the correct Google account.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Google Maps and sign in.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Your Timeline.
- Open the calendar and select the date to review.
Google provides separate minimum-version guidance for iPhone and iPad. Because that requirement and the labels can change, update the app if Your Timeline is not shown. Timeline data is tied to the device and account setup, so an iPhone or iPad may not display exactly the same history as another device.
Why you cannot view Timeline in Google Maps on a computer
Google says Timeline is not available in Maps on a computer. The mobile app reads Timeline data from the device, so signing in to maps.google.com on a laptop or desktop does not provide the same calendar view or deletion controls. Use a supported phone or tablet to view and manage it.
How to delete one Timeline visit
Use this method when one place or stop is incorrect or is the only record you want removed.

- Open Google Maps on your phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Your Timeline.
- Use the calendar to open the day containing the visit.
- Open the visit’s menu and choose the remove or delete option shown by the app.
- Confirm the deletion only after checking that you selected the correct visit.
Google’s current wording and menu location can vary by operating system and app version. Do not assume that removing one displayed place also removes every other entry from that day; inspect the day and delete additional visits separately when necessary.
How to delete selected dates or all Timeline history
Delete a period or selected portion
For a trip, a move, or another defined period, open Your Timeline and use the Timeline deletion controls rather than deleting visits one by one. Select the dates or portion offered by the current app, review the range in the confirmation dialog, and confirm. The app may present different labels on Android and iOS, so follow the controls visible on your device.
Check the start and end dates carefully. A range deletion can include every Timeline entry in that period, not just the place currently visible on screen.
Delete all Timeline data
Choose the control that deletes all Timeline data when you want the complete Timeline record removed. Confirming this action permanently deletes the covered data; Google says deleted Timeline data cannot be recovered.
Deleting all Timeline data is not the same as clearing your entire Google account activity. Search history, Maps searches, directions, and other activity can be stored under separate controls and may remain after Timeline is cleared.
Turn Timeline off without deleting history
If your goal is to stop future Timeline recording while keeping the history already saved, open Timeline settings and choose the option to turn Timeline off. Read the confirmation so you do not accidentally choose the separate option that turns Timeline off and deletes activity.

Turning Timeline off does not retroactively erase records that another Google service collected, and it does not remove exported files or copies stored on another device.
Set Timeline to auto-delete older data
Google’s current Timeline help describes automatic deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. In Timeline settings, select the available auto-delete period, review the account and device shown, and save the setting.
- 3 months: keeps a shorter rolling history.
- 18 months: keeps a medium-term history.
- 36 months: keeps up to three years before older Timeline data is removed.
These choices apply to Timeline data. They are not a promise that every Google record about your location will be deleted after the same period. Search Services History, Web & App Activity, Maps history, and information associated with other Google products can have separate retention settings.

Google is rolling out account changes, so the available setting or its wording may differ. If you do not see auto-delete, update Maps and check the Timeline settings on the device that manages your Timeline.
Understand device copies, encrypted backups, and exports
Timeline data is saved on the device. Google also lets you opt in to an encrypted backup on Google’s servers. Google Maps Help describes it this way: “When you back up your Timeline data, Maps saves an encrypted copy of your data on Google’s servers.”

If you are moving to a new phone, decide whether you need to transfer the local Timeline data or restore an encrypted backup before wiping the old device. If your goal is permanent removal, review the old device, the current device, each configured backup, and any exported files instead of relying on one deletion screen.

Google provides export steps on supported platforms. Availability and the exact export controls depend on the device and current app version.
Timeline is separate from Maps history
Google Maps history can contain searches, directions, place views, and similar activity. Its controls are separate from Timeline. Google specifically says that deleting Maps history does not affect visits recorded in Timeline.
Use Timeline controls when you want to remove places and routes from the Timeline calendar. Use Maps history or the relevant activity controls when you want to remove searches, directions, or viewed places. Clearing one category does not substitute for clearing the other.
Check other Google activity when you need broader location privacy
Timeline is not a complete list of every location-related record Google may hold. Google identifies Search Services History and Web & App Activity as separate controls that can preserve information related to searches, app use, or places. Activity may also be associated with other Google products or photos.
After deleting Timeline, open your Google account activity controls and review those services if you want to remove related records. Do not describe the result as a complete location wipe unless you have checked the other services, devices, backups, and exported copies that apply to your account.

What to do when Timeline is missing or incomplete
Your Timeline option is not visible
- Update Google Maps to the latest version available for your phone or tablet.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Google account that collected the history.
- Use the mobile app rather than Maps in a desktop browser.
- On Android, verify that the app meets the version guidance for the current Timeline entry point; Google’s documented Android route requires version 11.106 or later.
- Force-close and reopen Maps after updating, then check your profile menu again.
A date has no visits
- Use the calendar to check the exact date and nearby dates; a trip can cross midnight or a time-zone boundary.
- Check whether Timeline was turned off during that period.
- Look at the device that originally recorded the activity. Another phone may not contain the same local copy.
- Check whether an auto-delete setting removed older data.
A deletion appears not to have propagated
Review every relevant device and the optional encrypted backup. Google says that deleting a backup does not delete data stored on a device, and changes on one device do not necessarily appear on others. Also check exported files and separate activity services; they are outside the Timeline deletion itself.

You want to undo a deletion
Do not rely on an undo option. Google warns that deleted Timeline data cannot be recovered. If you need a record for travel, tax, work, or personal reasons, export or otherwise preserve the information before deleting it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a desktop browser: The computer version of Maps does not provide Timeline’s device-based calendar, so switch to the mobile app.
- Deleting Maps history instead: Search, directions, and viewed-place history are separate from Timeline visits.
- Assuming one device controls every copy: Local data, another handset, an encrypted backup, and an exported file can all require separate review.
- Confusing “turn off” with “turn off and delete”: Read the Android confirmation carefully so you choose whether existing activity stays or is removed.
- Skipping the date-range check: A selected range can remove every entry in that period, including places you intended to keep.
- Expecting auto-delete to cover all Google activity: Its 3-, 18-, or 36-month setting applies to Timeline, not automatically to Maps history or Web & App Activity.
- Deleting before preserving a needed record: Timeline deletion is permanent, so export or save anything needed for documentation first.

- Identify whether you need to remove one visit, a date range, all Timeline history, or only future collection.
- Open Google Maps on the phone or tablet that manages Timeline and select Your Timeline.
- Review the date or range before confirming any deletion.
- Export or preserve information you may need later; deleted Timeline data cannot be recovered.
- Check the local copy on each relevant device.
- Review and, if necessary, delete the optional encrypted backup separately.
- Remove exported files stored outside Maps if permanent removal is your goal.
- Review Maps history, Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and other relevant Google products for separate location-related records.
- Set Timeline auto-delete to 3, 18, or 36 months if you want ongoing cleanup rather than a one-time deletion.

For a thorough cleanup, separately review every relevant device, encrypted backup, exported file, Maps history, and other Google activity.
