To verify your identity for VA benefits online, start at VA.gov and sign in with an ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR account. Follow the identity-verification prompt, then provide the documents, Social Security number, multifactor authentication (MFA), and camera access your selected provider requests. The process often takes about 10 minutes, although the exact time and required steps vary.
If online verification fails, you may have an assisted or in-person option through the provider, or you can manage VA benefits by phone, mail, or in person.
What VA online identity verification does
VA uses an identity provider to confirm that the person signing in is the person entitled to access the account. The available sign-in providers on VA’s account-creation page are ID.me, Login.gov, and CLEAR. You create or use one of those accounts, complete its identity checks, and then return to VA.gov to access applications, benefits information, health-care details, and other services.

VA describes verification as a one-time process for an account, subject to additional checks when account access or security conditions require them. Choosing ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR does not change your eligibility for VA benefits or health care. It changes only how you prove your identity online.

VA says the purpose is to protect personal information and prevent someone from creating an account in another person’s name. Its explanation states: Identity verification is about protecting you from scammers who may try to set up an account in your name to access your information and benefits.
Identity proofing is separate from applying for a particular benefit. Completing it does not approve a claim, establish eligibility, or replace documents required for a disability, pension, education, health-care, or other application. It simply lets VA connect your online session with your records safely.
Prepare these items before you begin
Gather the following before opening the verification flow. The provider may not ask for every item on every route, but missing one can force you to stop and restart.
- An accepted, valid identity document. Requirements differ by provider and route. Do not assume that an expired document or an ID accepted by one provider will work with another. Login.gov’s listed online documents include a valid driver’s license, state-issued ID, or U.S. passport book. ID.me and CLEAR show their own current document lists.
- Your Social Security number. It is a common requirement. People without a U.S. Social Security number have a separate ID.me requirement described below.
- The email address and password for the account you will use. Use an email address you can access and keep the account credentials private. VA’s account-creation guidance recommends a unique email address.
- MFA access. Have the phone, authenticator, or other method already connected to the provider account available when prompted. A code sent to a different or inactive device will not help you complete the sign-in.
- A camera-capable device and internet connection. A smartphone, tablet, or computer camera may be required for document or face checks. CLEAR specifically calls for a smartphone with a front-facing camera and updated software.
- Recovery information. If you use Login.gov, save the personal key the service gives you. Losing it can mean completing identity verification again after a password reset.
- A private place to handle sensitive information. You may need to photograph an ID, enter an SSN, or read an MFA code. Do this on a trusted connection and close the session when finished.
Use the provider’s current instructions immediately before starting. Accepted documents, buttons, and route availability can change even when the VA sign-in page looks familiar. If the provider rejects a document, do not keep submitting an unclear image or an expired ID; review the route’s list and choose an offered alternative.

No provider is universally fastest or easiest. The practical choice depends on the document you have, whether your phone and MFA work, whether you have a U.S. phone number, and whether you need an online, video, or in-person route.
Compare the routes on more than the sign-in button. Check whether your document is accepted, whether an SSN and U.S. phone number are required, whether you have a camera and working MFA, and what happens if you lose your recovery information. A route that works for a veteran in the United States may not be the route available to someone overseas or without a U.S. phone number.
How to verify your identity on VA.gov
- Open VA.gov directly. Avoid beginning from an unsolicited email, text message, or social-media link. Use the VA site you normally trust and select the sign-in option.
- Choose an account provider. Select ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR if you are creating an account. If you already have one, use the provider account associated with your VA access. VA says the account-creation page recommends using a unique email address and protecting the account with MFA.
- Finish account setup and MFA. Confirm your email, create the password, and enroll the MFA method requested by the provider. Keep the MFA device available; you will need it during later sign-ins and some recovery steps.
- Sign in to VA.gov. After signing in, open the identity-verification alert shown in My VA or the equivalent prompt. Select the option to continue to the provider’s verification service.
- Authenticate with the provider again if asked. The handoff from VA.gov may require the provider email, password, and MFA even when you just signed in.
- Review the available verification methods. Read the document and route choices before uploading or photographing anything. Login.gov may present online or participating-post-office verification. ID.me may present self-service, video call, or an in-person appointment.
- Complete the identity and consent screens. Enter the requested personal information, photograph or scan the accepted document, complete any camera-based check, and approve the consent language. Follow the on-screen instructions rather than substituting a different document.
- Save recovery details before finishing. Login.gov users should record the personal key in a secure place. Do not post it, your Social Security number, or identity-document images in a public forum.
- Return to VA.gov and confirm the status. Follow the final prompt back to VA.gov and check that the account shows as verified before starting an application or opening protected records. Labels can change, so use the live instructions if your screen differs.
If you stop partway through, note which provider and email you used. Starting over with a second account can leave your VA access connected to the wrong account and make troubleshooting more difficult.

Provider-specific details and exceptions
ID.me
ID.me’s self-service route uses certain valid, unexpired U.S. identity documents and normally requires an account, MFA, Social Security number, and a camera-capable device or computer. If self-service cannot complete the check, ID.me may offer a video call with a representative or an appointment at a participating UPS Store. An in-person appointment is not guaranteed in every location, so use the availability shown in your account.
People outside the United States can select the relevant location option and, when offered, verify with an ID.me representative by video call. The process may also be the route VA directs to people who do not have a current state ID, whose phone plan is not in their own name, or who need a fuller online verification route. Those circumstances are described in VA’s 2025 guidance; the live VA and ID.me screens control if the wording or eligibility rules have changed.
Login.gov
Login.gov’s online path calls for a valid driver’s license, state-issued ID, or U.S. passport book, plus a Social Security number, U.S. phone number, camera-capable smartphone or tablet, and MFA access. If you do not have a U.S. phone number, VA says Login.gov may offer verification by letter instead of the standard online path.
Login.gov also offers in-person identity verification at participating USPS locations. Follow the invitation in your Login.gov flow; do not assume every post office provides the service. Keep the personal key supplied during setup. If you reset your password without that key, Login.gov requires you to prove your identity again.
CLEAR
CLEAR’s VA route requires a valid, unexpired government ID, Social Security number, and a smartphone with a front-facing camera and updated software. Complete the prompts presented by CLEAR after the VA handoff. VA’s general page lists CLEAR as an option for people living outside the United States, but the current provider flow determines which documents and locations are accepted.
What to do if you do not have a U.S. Social Security number, phone, or address
No U.S. Social Security number
VA’s general identity-verification information says a person without a U.S. Social Security number needs ID.me and must show a valid U.S. passport as one of the identity documents. Do not select a different provider solely because its sign-in button appears first; use the route VA currently offers for your situation.
Living outside the United States
VA says people living outside the United States can use ID.me or CLEAR. ID.me’s overview describes a video-call review with an ID.me representative for people abroad. Country, document, and appointment availability can change, so select the outside-the-U.S. option shown in the live flow.

No U.S. phone number or a phone plan not in your name
Login.gov’s standard online process calls for a U.S. phone number. VA says a letter may be available if you lack one. Its 2025 guidance also identifies ID.me as a possible route for someone whose phone plan is not in their name and wants to complete the full process online. Treat that PDF as dated context and follow the current provider choices.

Work through the following checks before opening a new account:
- Check the document. Make sure it is the type the selected provider lists, is valid and unexpired, and is photographed clearly when the provider requests an image. Glare, cropped edges, or an image that cannot be read can prevent automated review.
- Check the device. Use a camera-capable smartphone, tablet, or computer, install current software when required, and allow camera access when the provider asks. A device without a working camera cannot complete a camera-based route.
- Check MFA. Use the MFA method connected to the same provider account. Creating a second account with a different email can leave you signed into the wrong identity.
- Check the route. Read the provider’s instructions for your location. A method available in the United States may not appear abroad, and a participating USPS or UPS Store appointment may require advance availability.
- Use the offered recovery route. Look for video-call, letter, USPS, or UPS Store options rather than repeatedly submitting the same failed online attempt.
- Contact the correct support team. Provider support handles ID.me, Login.gov, or CLEAR passwords, MFA, and verification failures. VA contact-center representatives cannot reset ID.me or Login.gov passwords.
If you lose a Login.gov personal key, expect to repeat identity verification after a password reset. Keep any replacement recovery information in a secure location that you can access without sharing it with an intermediary.
In-person and non-digital alternatives
Provider-assisted verification
Login.gov may direct you to a participating USPS location for in-person verification. ID.me may offer an appointment at a participating UPS Store or a video call. The exact appointment slots, participating locations, and accepted documents are controlled by the provider. CLEAR’s available assistance is shown in its current prompts.
Bring only the documents and information the provider requests. An appointment does not make an expired or unacceptable document valid, and not every branch or store participates. Confirm the location and instructions through the provider account rather than relying on a message from an unknown person.

VA help without an online account
You do not have to use an online account to manage VA benefits or health care. VA says you can use phone, mail, or in-person services. Select the relevant VA office or contact center for the benefit you need. Staff can explain application or benefits procedures, but they cannot reset an ID.me or Login.gov password; that remains the provider’s responsibility.
Protect yourself from verification scams
Start by typing VA.gov or using a trusted bookmark instead of clicking an unexpected message that asks you to verify personal information. A legitimate verification flow will show the provider handoff inside the VA sign-in process or the provider’s official site.

How long verification takes and what can change
VA says identity verification often takes about 10 minutes. That is an operational estimate from VA guidance, not a study, guaranteed completion time, or success-rate statistic. A document problem, unavailable MFA method, video-call queue, or in-person appointment can make the process longer.
Provider interfaces, accepted-document rules, and appointment availability are change-sensitive. If a button or requirement differs from the steps above, follow the current instructions displayed by VA.gov and the selected provider. The account choice itself does not alter benefit eligibility; it only determines the identity-proofing path used for online access.
