To verify an XRP Ledger transaction, look it up by transaction hash and accept it as final only when the response shows that it is included in a validated ledger. Then inspect TransactionResult and transaction metadata; for a Payment, use delivered_amount to determine what the recipient actually received.

To check XRP supply on-chain, query the ledger method for a named validated ledger, read total_coins in drops, divide by 1,000,000, and record the ledger index or hash and query time. That value is the ledger’s network total for one snapshot, not automatically a third-party “circulating supply” estimate.

What “verified” means on the XRP Ledger

An XRP Ledger transaction goes through more than one observable stage. A submission response means a server accepted the transaction for processing; it does not by itself prove that the transaction became part of the ledger. The authoritative check is a lookup after the transaction appears in a validated ledger version.

XRP Ledger documentation, “Send XRP” tutorial

A validated ledger is an identified snapshot of the network state. Its ledger index tells you its sequence, while its hash identifies the contents of that particular version. Once validated, that ledger version is immutable. Keep the transaction hash and the validated ledger identifier with your notes so another person can repeat the lookup against the same snapshot.

Validated versus provisional results

Response state What it establishes What it does not establish
Initial submission or unvalidated response A server accepted or observed the transaction while processing is still in progress. That the transaction will be included, or what its final ledger effects will be.
Validated transaction response The transaction is included in a validated ledger, with a final result and metadata. That the transaction succeeded financially; a validated transaction can still have a failure result.

How to verify an XRP transaction step by step

1. Obtain the transaction hash

Start with the transaction’s hash, a hexadecimal identifier produced for that transaction. Copy it exactly. A destination address, amount, or timestamp is not a reliable substitute because several transactions can share those characteristics.

2. Query the transaction method

Send a transaction request to an XRPL server through its JSON-RPC or WebSocket API. The request body can be structured like this:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
{
  "method": "tx",
  "params": [
    {
      "transaction": "TRANSACTION_HASH",
      "binary": false
    }
  ]
}

Replace TRANSACTION_HASH with the real hash and submit the body to the API endpoint of a trusted server. The example deliberately shows the request body rather than a particular host: server availability and history coverage vary, and a response from one server is not proof that every server retains the same historical range.

3. Confirm the validated status and ledger identity

Read the response fields that identify validation. A completed lookup should provide:

  • validated: true (or the equivalent validated indicator in the client you are using).
  • The validated ledger_index.
  • The ledger hash when the server supplies it.
  • The transaction’s TransactionResult.

If validated is false, treat the response as provisional. Wait for a validated ledger and query again. If the server reports that the transaction is not found, do not immediately conclude that it never existed; the server may not retain the relevant ledger range.

4. Read TransactionResult, not just inclusion

Inclusion and success are different questions. A transaction can be written into a validated ledger with a failure result. Record the exact TransactionResult code and explain what it means for the operation. A successful result in XRPL’s result-code scheme is commonly represented by tesSUCCESS; any other code requires you to interpret the documented failure or retry condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even a failed transaction can affect the sender’s XRP balance because the transaction cost is destroyed when the transaction is processed. Therefore, a statement such as “the transaction went through” is incomplete unless it says whether the intended operation succeeded and what fee or other balance change occurred.

5. Inspect metadata and affected ledger nodes

The transaction metadata describes the ledger changes. Review the affected ledger nodes to see which account, trust-line, offer, or other objects changed, and use the metadata’s transaction result as the final operation status. This is the part of the response that explains what the ledger actually did rather than what the submitted transaction requested.

6. For Payments, use delivered_amount

For a Payment, compare the amount requested in the transaction with the amount delivered in the validated result. The declared Amount can be misleading when a payment is allowed to deliver less than its maximum, so use metadata’s delivered_amount to determine what reached the destination.

There is a documented historical exception: for a partial payment in a validated ledger before 2014-01-20, delivered_amount may be unavailable. In that case, infer the delivered value from the relevant AffectedNodes entries as directed by the XRPL documentation.

Reading a transaction response correctly

Field or evidence Question it answers How to use it
Transaction hash Which transaction am I checking? Use it as the stable lookup key and preserve it in your audit record.
validated Is this result final? Require a true value before treating the ledger effects as final.
ledger_index and ledger hash Which immutable snapshot contains it? Record both when available; the index identifies sequence and the hash identifies contents.
TransactionResult Did the operation succeed? Interpret the result code; inclusion alone is not success.
Metadata and AffectedNodes What changed? Trace account balances and object changes caused by the transaction.
delivered_amount How much did a Payment actually deliver? Use this rather than assuming the declared Amount was received, especially for partial payments.

Choosing the right identifier for the question

The transaction hash and the ledger identifier answer different questions. A hash lets you locate one transaction. The ledger index or hash identifies the complete validated state in which that transaction was recorded. For a recent finality check, begin with the hash and use the ledger identity returned with the validated response. For an audit or historical report, retain both identifiers.

A ledger index is useful for sequence and navigation, while the ledger hash binds the record to its exact contents. If two reports quote the same index but different hashes, investigate rather than assuming the records are interchangeable. When a server does not return a ledger hash, record the index and the server response exactly, then use another trusted source if a hash is required for reproducibility.

Do not substitute a block-explorer label, wallet notification, or submission receipt for these fields. Such displays can be useful starting points, but the on-chain verification record is the validated API response and its metadata.

What a finality check can and cannot prove

A validated response proves that the transaction is part of a validated ledger and gives the ledger’s final result. It does not mean the requested business outcome happened. A validated transaction may have a failure code, and a failed transaction may still consume the transaction cost. Conversely, a successful Payment result still needs metadata review when the transaction permits partial delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate three statements in your notes: “the transaction was included,” “the operation succeeded,” and “this amount was delivered.” The first comes from validated inclusion, the second from TransactionResult, and the third from delivered_amount or, for the documented historical exception, the affected ledger nodes. This wording prevents a submission response or a requested amount from being mistaken for a final financial outcome.

How to check XRP supply on-chain

The XRP Ledger API exposes a field named total_coins for a selected ledger. It is the network total represented by that ledger, expressed in drops. A drop is one-millionth of an XRP, so 1 XRP equals 1,000,000 drops.

1. Select a validated ledger snapshot

For the latest validated state, request the ledger using the server’s validated-ledger selector. For a reproducible historical result, use a specific ledger index or ledger hash instead. A request body can look like this:

{
  "method": "ledger",
  "params": [
    {
      "ledger_index": "validated",
      "transactions": false,
      "expand": false
    }
  ]
}

To examine a known snapshot, replace "validated" with the ledger index or hash you want to reproduce. Ask the server to return the ledger object and read its total_coins, ledger_index, and ledger_hash fields. Confirm that the response represents a validated ledger before recording the number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Convert drops to XRP without losing precision

Apply this formula:

XRP = total_coins_in_drops / 1,000,000

For example, a value of 1,234,567 drops converts to 1.234567 XRP. The example demonstrates only the unit conversion; it is not a current supply quote.

Large drop counts can exceed the exact-integer range of ordinary JavaScript numbers. Use decimal or arbitrary-precision arithmetic when processing API output. Python’s standard library can preserve the value exactly:

from decimal import Decimal

drops = Decimal("TOTAL_COINS_FROM_RESPONSE")
xrp = drops / Decimal(1_000_000)
print(xrp)

Keep the original drop count as well as the converted XRP value. The drop count is the API’s source value; the decimal XRP figure is a presentation conversion.

3. Record the snapshot and query time

A supply statement should identify the ledger index or hash, the raw total_coins value, the converted XRP amount, the server used, and the UTC time of the query. Without that context, a reader cannot tell whether two different supply figures refer to different ledger snapshots or use different definitions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What total_coins does—and does not—mean

total_coins is a ledger-defined network total for one validated snapshot. It is not an undated constant. The documented value decreases as transaction fees destroy XRP, so a later ledger can report a lower total even when no large transfer occurred.

Do not label this field “circulating supply” unless you also provide a separate definition and source for that measure. A circulating-supply estimate may apply inclusion or exclusion rules that are not represented by the ledger’s total_coins field. If you publish both numbers, name them separately and state the snapshot date and methodology for each.

Term Meaning in a verification report
Ledger total The total_coins value returned for a specified validated ledger, converted from drops to XRP.
Circulating-supply estimate A separately defined statistic whose provider decides what to include or exclude; it is not interchangeable with total_coins without explaining the methodology.

Supply checks that are easy to misread

First verify the unit. The API returns drops, not whole XRP, so copying the integer directly into a report overstates the quantity by a factor of 1,000,000. Preserve the raw integer and show the division used to produce the displayed XRP value.

Next verify the snapshot. A request for the latest validated ledger is intentionally time-dependent; a later query can return a different ledger index and a different total because fees continue to destroy XRP. A historical index or hash is the appropriate choice when a report, reconciliation, or comparison must remain reproducible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally verify the definition. Two valid numbers can disagree because one is total_coins and the other is a separately defined circulating-supply estimate. Compare the field name, units, ledger identifier, query time, and inclusion rules before deciding that either number is erroneous.

Checking a historical transaction or supply snapshot

Why an old lookup can fail

XRPL servers differ in how much ledger history they retain. A server may follow the current ledger correctly while lacking the old ledger or transaction you request. “Not found” from that server therefore means only that the requested record is unavailable there; it does not prove that the record never existed.

How to recover the lookup

  1. Note the ledger index or date range implied by the transaction or supply question.
  2. Check whether the server has continuous history covering that range rather than only recent ledgers.
  3. Query another trusted server that retains the required range.
  4. When a result is returned, verify its validated status and preserve the ledger index or hash with the transaction or supply value.

Full-history servers retain older data but require significantly more disk space. Running one is an advanced infrastructure choice, not a prerequisite for checking current state or following new transactions. An ordinary server can provide current validated state without storing the entire ledger history.

History coverage is a property of the server, not of the transaction hash itself. If a lookup fails, keep the original hash or target ledger unchanged while changing servers. This avoids accidentally searching for a different transaction or reporting a current snapshot when the question concerns an older one.

Current-state versus historical verification

Goal Identifier to use Important qualification
Check whether a recent transaction is final Transaction hash, then the latest validated ledger response Wait for validated: true; an initial submission response can change.
Reproduce an old transaction result Transaction hash plus the ledger containing it The server must retain that historical range.
Quote the latest ledger total ledger_index: "validated" The value changes as new ledgers close and fees destroy XRP.
Quote a historical ledger total A specific ledger index or hash Report the snapshot identifier and avoid presenting it as today’s total.

Troubleshooting common verification errors

The transaction appears successful but is not validated

Do not treat the submission response as final. Query the transaction again after additional ledgers have validated. If it later disappears or receives a different result, the initial response was provisional.

The transaction is validated but the recipient received less

Inspect delivered_amount in the Payment metadata. A partial payment can specify a maximum Amount that exceeds what was delivered. Report the delivered value and the final result, not just the requested amount.

The transaction is in a ledger but failed

Read TransactionResult and the affected nodes. Explain that the transaction was recorded with a failure outcome and check the sender’s balance for the transaction cost. “Included” and “completed successfully” are not synonyms.

The API cannot find an old transaction

Two supply figures differ

Compare the ledger index or hash, query times, units, and definitions. One value may be a newer snapshot, one may still be in drops, or one may be a separately defined circulating-supply estimate rather than total_coins.

The ledger response is not the snapshot you intended

Check whether the request used validated, a numeric index, or a hash. The selector determines whether you are asking for the current validated state or a specific historical version. Record the returned index and hash rather than relying solely on the selector you sent.

A reproducible verification record

For each transaction or supply check, retain a compact record containing:

  • The exact transaction hash or ledger index/hash queried.
  • The server identity and API method used (tx or ledger).
  • The UTC timestamp of the request.
  • The validated indicator and validated ledger index.
  • The complete TransactionResult and relevant metadata for a transaction.
  • The raw total_coins value in drops and the conversion calculation for a supply check.
  • Any history-availability error or server limitation encountered.

This record separates a final on-chain observation from an estimate, a provisional submission, or a value copied from an unspecified date.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify an XRP transaction on-chain?

Use the transaction hash with an XRPL server’s tx method. Require validated: true, record the validated ledger index or hash, read TransactionResult, and inspect metadata. For a Payment, use delivered_amount rather than assuming the declared amount was delivered.

How do I check if an XRP transaction went through?

Check two separate outcomes: validated inclusion and operation success. Inclusion is shown by a validated response; success is shown by the result code, commonly tesSUCCESS. A transaction can be included with a failure result and still consume its transaction cost.

Is an XRP transaction submission response final?

No. An initial submission or unvalidated response is provisional. Query the transaction again after it appears in a validated ledger. Only that validated result should be used to describe final ledger effects.

What is the difference between Amount and delivered_amount?

Amount is the amount specified by the Payment, while delivered_amount reports what actually reached the destination in the validated result. Partial payments are the important case in which the requested maximum can exceed the delivered amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much XRP is in circulation?

The ledger API’s total_coins field is a network total for a particular validated ledger, not automatically a circulating-supply estimate. To answer a circulating-supply question, identify the provider’s separate inclusion and exclusion rules and do not substitute the two measures without explanation.

How do I check XRP supply on the XRP Ledger?

Call the ledger method for a validated ledger, read total_coins in drops, and divide by 1,000,000. Save the raw drop count, converted XRP amount, ledger index or hash, server, and UTC query time.

Why does the XRP total change between queries?

total_coins is tied to a ledger snapshot. Transaction fees destroy XRP, so the documented total decreases over time. Queries for different validated ledgers can therefore return different totals even when no large transfer occurred.

Why can’t a server find an old transaction?

The server may not retain the required ledger range. “Not found” from that server does not prove nonexistence. Check its history coverage and query another trusted server with continuous history. Full-history operation needs significantly more disk space and is not required for current-state checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to run a full-history server to verify transactions?

No. An ordinary server can follow the current ledger and provide current validated state. Full history is useful for old transactions or old supply snapshots, but it is an advanced infrastructure option with substantially higher storage requirements.
