There is no single test that proves an image or video is genuine. Verify it in layers: identify the earliest source, test the claimed date, place and event, inspect metadata and provenance records, then use visual or automated forensics only as supporting evidence. A file can be an unaltered camera original and still be paired with a false caption; an edited file can also contain an accurate depiction. “Edited?” and “Does this show what the post claims?” are separate questions.

The practical goal is a conclusion that matches the evidence—for example, “this clip appeared online earlier with another location,” “the file carries a signed edit history,” or “no original or independent corroboration was found”—rather than an unsupported “real” or “fake” label.

First decide what you are trying to verify

Before opening a detector, write down the claim in one sentence. Then separate four questions that are often mixed together:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Source: Is this the earliest available copy, or only a repost or screenshot?
  • File changes: Have pixels, frames, audio, or the edit history been altered?
  • Scene: Does the media actually depict the stated people, place, event and date?
  • Independence: Do other witnesses or recordings confirm it, or are they all copies of one upload?

The House of Commons Library’s briefing, “How to verify images and videos,” frames the same discipline with questions such as “Is the image or video the original source?”, “Is it the only source?” and “Does it show what it says it shows?” Treat those as separate checkpoints. A genuine photograph from 2019 can be presented as breaking news in 2026; reverse-searching its pixels may find the old copy while finding nothing about the new caption.

It also helps to define what “edited” means in the case at hand. A crop, color adjustment or compression can change a file without changing the central event shown. A composite, removed object or altered frame may change what viewers infer. Re-encoding by a platform may leave visible artifacts even when nobody has deceptively altered the scene. Establishing that a file has a history of changes is therefore not the same as establishing that the changes falsified its meaning.

A layered verification workflow

1. Preserve the best available file and its context

Save the highest-quality original you can obtain. Prefer a file downloaded from the uploader or a camera owner over a screenshot, screen recording or compressed social-media copy. Keep the original filename and extension, and make a working duplicate for analysis. Record:

  • the exact page or message URL;
  • the account name and stated date and location;
  • when you obtained the file;
  • the surrounding caption, comments and any quoted source;
  • whether the file was downloaded, forwarded, cropped or re-encoded.

Do not open and resave the only copy in an editor. Resaving can replace metadata and recompress the media, making later interpretation harder. A screenshot proves only what was displayed on that screen; it is not equivalent to the source file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the source context before it changes or disappears: a post can be edited or deleted, and a repost may omit the original attribution. If you can contact the uploader or camera owner, ask for the original file and when, where and how it was captured. Their account is useful context, not independent proof. Keep any answer alongside the file rather than relying on memory.

2. Find earlier copies with reverse search

For a still image, search the full frame and distinctive details such as a sign, building, uniform, vehicle or unusual object. The House of Commons Library lists TinEye, Bing, Google and InVID verification as examples of public tools. Search several services because their indexes differ.

For video, extract multiple representative frames: an opening shot, a frame containing a sign or landmark, a clear face or object, and a later frame. Search each frame separately. A single frame may have been cropped or mirrored, while another reveals the original.

Search the claim in words as well as the media. Try names, place names, event descriptions, weather conditions, visible text and distinctive sounds. An old disaster video, protest clip or weather scene is often recirculated with a new country or date. If an earlier copy has a different caption, preserve both versions and note which appeared first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reverse-search result is a lead to inspect, not a complete history of an image. Open the result and compare the actual image, crop, visible details, caption and publication date; a search result thumbnail alone may be misleading. A search that returns no match is also inconclusive. The file may not have been indexed, may have been cropped or altered enough to evade a match, or may have circulated only in private or closed channels. Do not turn “not found” into “original.”

3. Test the event, location and date independently

Reverse search establishes that a copy existed; it does not establish that the depicted event occurred as claimed. Check independent reporting, official records, local footage, maps, weather and daylight conditions. Compare details that should be stable:

  • road layouts, storefronts, mountains, skylines and signs;
  • language, uniforms, vehicle plates and public-transport designs;
  • weather, shadows and the position of the sun;
  • crowd size, building damage or other developments over time;
  • the upload time relative to the alleged event.

Several genuinely independent recordings or eyewitness accounts strengthen an event claim. Ten accounts that all repost the same original upload are still one source. If a clip was first posted months or years earlier, say so precisely; do not call it fabricated merely because its new description is false.

When comparing sources, look for evidence of actual independence: different camera positions, distinct original uploaders, separate reporting or details that could not all have come from one shared clip. A cluster of reposts can show that a claim spread widely, but not that several people independently witnessed it. Likewise, a second recording may confirm that an event occurred without proving every detail in the caption. State exactly which part is corroborated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Inspect metadata without overinterpreting it

Camera files may contain Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) fields such as capture time, GPS coordinates, camera model, lens and software. Video containers can include creation dates, encoder information and timecode. Record the fields exactly, including the software name and time zone, and compare them with the claimed story.

Metadata is a clue, not proof. Social platforms commonly strip it; messaging and editing applications can rewrite it; a user can set a camera clock incorrectly or alter fields deliberately. Missing GPS does not show that a file was manipulated, and a plausible timestamp does not prove that the camera recorded the claimed scene. Treat a metadata conflict as a reason to investigate the source, not as a verdict.

Keep the distinction between a file field and an independently verified fact. A time inside a file is a recorded value; it may not be the time zone the post implies, and it may reflect export or software processing rather than capture. A location field can be absent even for an authentic camera original. Compare metadata with the upload timeline and external evidence, and document discrepancies instead of silently choosing the field that best fits the claim.

5. Check Content Credentials and other signed provenance

Where available, Content Credentials based on the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) can record a creator, time, device or software and a sequence of changes. Cryptographic signatures make unauthorized alteration of the credential record detectable. Inspect the complete history rather than a badge alone: it may show that an image was cropped, color-corrected, generated or composited.

A credential describes the file’s recorded history, not whether the edit was appropriate or whether the depicted event is true. Adoption remains incomplete. Credentials can be detached when a file is copied, and a file without them may simply come from a camera or platform that never issued them. Therefore:

  • a valid credential can support a documented chain of handling;
  • an edit entry is not evidence of deception by itself;
  • no credential is not evidence that the media is fake.

Credentials are most useful when the file under review is still connected to its provenance record and the relevant creator or software participated in the system. If someone reposts an image or shares a screenshot, the record may no longer travel with it. A signed history can help answer what happened to a participating file; it cannot answer whether the event in the image happened as described or why an edit was made.

6. Understand what an AI watermark can and cannot say

Systems such as SynthID test for a watermark associated with supported generation or editing systems. A positive result can indicate that the tested system’s watermark is present. A negative result means only that this watermark was not detected; it does not rule out another AI system, an older model, ordinary editing or a watermark that was damaged by processing.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Research Integrity, on its “Content Provenance” page, notes that watermark coverage is limited and that watermarks may be removed, altered or misused. Cropping, resizing, recompression and screenshots can also affect detection. Use a watermark result as one narrowly scoped signal, not as an authenticity certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be precise about the question a watermark check answers. It can look for a signal associated with a supported system; it does not certify that a scene is true, identify every possible synthetic-media system, or tell you whether an image was edited by other means. The absence of a signal is not a clean bill of health, just as a detected signal is not by itself an explanation of how the image was used.

7. Examine visual, audio and continuity clues

Zooming in can reveal questions worth checking:

  • lighting or shadow directions that do not agree;
  • halos, unnaturally sharp boundaries or mismatched blur around a subject;
  • perspective or reflections inconsistent with the scene;
  • repeated textures, duplicated objects or warped text;
  • faces, hands, jewelry or logos that change between frames;
  • abrupt audio ambience, lip-sync or room-acoustic changes;
  • frame-rate, motion-blur or compression changes at a cut.

These are prompts for closer examination, not proof. Camera processing, resizing, low light, rolling shutter, ordinary cuts and platform compression can create the same appearance. Compare suspicious regions with adjacent frames and, when possible, with an uncompressed source.

For video, do not base a conclusion on a single freeze-frame if the issue concerns motion or continuity. Check frames before and after the suspected change, listen for continuity in the background sound, and distinguish a normal edit between shots from a change inside a shot. A cut may be ordinary storytelling or a misleading omission; its meaning depends on what the clip claims and what the surrounding footage shows. Compression and processing can also make edges look inconsistent, so seek corroboration before attributing an artifact to deliberate manipulation.

What each verification method actually establishes

Method Checks Can support Important failure modes
Reverse image or frame search Prior publication and related copies Evidence that a version existed earlier; alternate captions or crops No result does not mean original. The file may be unindexed, private, cropped or altered.
Metadata inspection Embedded capture, device, location and software fields A recorded timestamp, device or processing history Fields can be stripped, rewritten or wrong; platforms often remove them.
Content Credentials Signed provenance and declared changes A tamper-evident record of participating tools and edits Incomplete adoption; credentials can be detached; history does not prove the scene is truthful.
Supported watermark check Presence of a particular system’s watermark A signal associated with that supported system Does not cover unsupported systems; processing or attacks can remove or alter the signal.
Visual or audio forensics Pixel, frame, geometry and continuity anomalies Specific regions or transitions that merit investigation Compression and normal camera processing create artifacts; interpretation is expert-dependent.
Automated detector A defined manipulation, localization or deepfake task A probability or classification within that tool’s tested scope False positives and false negatives; results for one task do not generalize to every edit.

These methods answer different questions, so combining them is more useful than treating them as interchangeable tests. Reverse search checks for prior copies and context; metadata reports embedded fields; credentials record provenance for participating files; a watermark check looks for a particular signal; and forensic analysis examines anomalies. Several independent lines of evidence can make a conclusion stronger, but several outputs that all rely on the same repost or the same underlying data are not necessarily independent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIST’s Open Media Forensics Challenge treats manipulation detection, manipulation localization, deepfake detection and steganography detection as distinct evaluation tasks. A result on one task should not be presented as a universal answer about all alterations. The published task descriptions include datasets with more than 16,000 test images for an image-manipulation task and about 1,000 test videos for a video-manipulation task; those are dataset sizes, not accuracy rates.

Using automated detectors responsibly

Before trusting a detector, identify exactly what it claims to detect: face replacement, synthetic generation, splicing, resampling, audio manipulation or something else. Check whether it was evaluated on media resembling your file, including its resolution, codec, platform compression and language. Ask whether the reported result is a confidence score, a binary label or a highlighted region.

A responsible assessment documents performance on both genuine and manipulated examples, including false-positive and false-negative rates. A false positive can cast suspicion on genuine media; a false negative can miss altered media. No general-purpose accuracy percentage for consumer image or video detectors is established here, so do not quote one or treat a vendor’s score as universal.

NIST SP 800-63A, Fourth Revision, gives a recommendation for remote identity-proofing systems: “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” That recommendation applies to the regulated identity-proofing context; it is not a blanket legal requirement for every social-media investigation. The operational lesson is still useful: have a person review the file, source and context before making a consequential decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not read a numerical confidence score as the probability that a claim is true unless the tool’s documentation supports that interpretation. A detector may be trained or evaluated for a specific manipulation task and may not address an old clip given a new caption, a misleading crop or an edited audio track. Ask what the system tested, what it did not test and how its result was validated on comparable material. If those details are unavailable, report the output as an unverified signal rather than a measured verdict.

How to write a defensible conclusion

Match the wording to what you actually established. Useful formulations include:

  • Earlier source found: “The same frames were published on [date] by [account] in connection with [earlier description]; the current location claim is unsupported.”
  • Provenance recorded: “The file contains a valid signed history showing [specific edit]. This documents handling, not the truth of the scene.”
  • Unresolved: “We found no indexed original or independent corroboration. That leaves the claim unverified; it does not prove fabrication.”
  • Technical anomaly: “A detector flagged [defined feature], but compression and the tool’s error rates prevent a definitive conclusion.”

Avoid “proven real” when you have only a plausible metadata field, and avoid “definitely fake” when you have only an artifact or a failed reverse search. State the strongest supported finding and the remaining uncertainty separately.

Keep the conclusion narrow. “The clip was posted earlier with a different date” is stronger and more informative than a broad label if that is what the evidence shows. If an edit is documented, specify the edit and the record that documents it; do not infer motive without evidence. If the event is not corroborated, say it remains unverified rather than claiming it did not happen. This makes it clear what readers can rely on and what remains unknown.

Public reverse-search and source-checking methods are accessible starting points, but high-stakes interpretation calls for trained practitioners and careful preservation. Avoid presenting an online tool output as an expert examination, particularly if the file may be used in legal or safety decisions. Keep a written record of which copies were examined, how they were obtained and what checks were performed.

NIST’s Digital Investigation Techniques: A NIST Scientific Foundation Review (NISTIR 8354, published November 21, 2022) states: “Digital investigation techniques are based on established computer science methods and when used appropriately are considered reliable.” The same review warns that not all evidence may be discovered, recovered material can include irrelevant items, and software changes can alter the meaning of artifacts. An examiner should therefore document tools, versions, extraction steps, assumptions and limitations, rather than presenting a software output without context.

A compact checklist

  1. Save the highest-quality original and record its URL, uploader, date and surrounding claim.
  2. Extract several video frames; reverse-search the image, frames and distinctive details.
  3. Find the earliest copy and compare crops, captions, edits and publication times.
  4. Check the place, date and event against independent reporting, maps, weather and other recordings.
  5. Read metadata and Content Credentials; record what is present and treat absence as inconclusive.
  6. Check any watermark only for the supported system it covers.
  7. Inspect visual, audio and continuity anomalies as leads, not proof.
  8. Use an automated detector only within its stated task and document uncertainty and error risks.
  9. For high-stakes claims, preserve evidence and consult a qualified examiner.
  10. Report the conclusion at the level the evidence supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a failed reverse image search mean an image is original?

No. It means the tool did not find a match in its indexed material. The image may be unindexed, cropped, altered or circulating in a private channel. A failed search does not prove originality.

Can metadata prove that a photo or video is authentic?

No. Metadata can record a date, location, device or software, but it can be stripped, rewritten or incorrect. Treat it as one clue and compare it with the source and independent context.

Does a Content Credential prove that the scene is real?

No. A signed Content Credential can document a participating file’s origin and edits, but it does not establish that the depicted event happened as claimed or explain whether an edit was appropriate. Credentials may also be absent or detached from copies.

If a watermark detector finds nothing, does that rule out AI-generated media?

No. A check such as SynthID looks for a watermark associated with supported systems. Other systems may not use that watermark, and processing can affect detection. A negative result is not an authenticity certificate.

Can an AI detector tell me definitively whether a video was edited?

Not in every case. Detectors address defined tasks, such as deepfake detection or manipulation localization, and can produce false positives or false negatives. Use the result as a scoped signal and corroborate it with source, context and other evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I ask a digital-forensics examiner for help?

Escalate when an allegation could affect legal proceedings, safety, employment, elections, insurance, journalism or someone’s reputation. Preserve the original and acquisition details, and avoid converting or recompressing the evidence.

The Bottom Line

Verify in layers, and keep the conclusion narrower than the claim. Trace the earliest source, check the event’s date and place independently, inspect metadata and credentials with their limitations in mind, and treat visual clues or detector results as leads—not verdicts. A genuine file can carry a false caption, and an edited file can still depict a real event.
