No single visual clue, metadata field, provenance credential, or detector result proves a video is authentic or AI-generated. To assess a clip, preserve the best available copy, trace its source and earliest appearance, check the caption against independent evidence, inspect provenance signals where available, and treat visual or automated findings as leads—not verdicts. A genuine recording can still be misleadingly captioned, dated, located, or edited.
First, separate the questions you are trying to answer
“Is this video real?” can mean several different things. Keep them distinct, because evidence for one does not automatically answer the others:
- Was the media generated or altered? This concerns the pixels, audio, edits, and any supported AI-use signals.
- Where and when was it recorded? This concerns the clip’s origin and chronology.
- Does the file have a verifiable provenance record? This concerns documented history and whether a credential validates.
- Is the caption’s claim true? This concerns the event, location, date, or interpretation being asserted.
A credential can describe a file’s history without proving that the scene happened as claimed. Conversely, a video without credentials may still be genuine; its provenance record may be absent, stripped, or unsupported by the tools available.
Use this verification workflow
1. Preserve the best available copy
Keep the original file if you can obtain it. Record the post URL, account name, date, caption, and any stated location. Prefer a source file or original download to a screenshot, screen recording, or copy that has been re-encoded. Uploads and conversions can remove metadata or weaken other signals. Keep an untouched evidence copy rather than editing or converting the file you are assessing.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Identify the exact claim and who is making it
Write down what the post asserts: the event, people, place, and date. Check the uploader’s identity and history, but treat reputation only as context. A credible account can share a mistaken caption, and a suspicious account does not by itself prove that the footage is fabricated. Search distinctive phrases, names, landmarks, and event details from the claim.
3. Find earlier appearances
Search descriptive keywords and reverse-search representative frames. Compare any matches with the version you are investigating: the same-looking scene may be a different recording, and a match alone does not establish that the file is identical or authentic. Check dates and original contexts. If the same footage appeared before the event named in a caption, that chronology can disprove that particular caption, even if the footage itself is genuine.

The UK House of Commons Library lists TinEye, Bing, Google, and InVID among tools that can help investigate images and videos. Reverse search can surface useful leads, but it does not certify a clip’s origin or truth. See the House of Commons Library’s guidance on verifying images and videos.
4. Seek independent corroboration
Look for other footage, photographs, credible reporting, or first-hand accounts that independently document the same event. Compare details such as viewpoints, landmarks, signs, weather, shadows, and timing. Multiple reposts of one clip are not multiple independent sources; trace them back to determine whether they rely on the same original post.

5. Check metadata and provenance signals
If you have the original file, inspect its metadata and check whether it carries C2PA Content Credentials or a relevant provider watermark. Use a verifier that supports the signal and media type, and read what it actually reports: who or what signed the record, what assertions it contains, and whether validation succeeded. Metadata may be edited or removed, and platforms often strip it. Therefore, missing metadata is not proof of fakery, while present metadata is not conclusive proof of origin.
C2PA credentials are designed to provide a cryptographically bound record of provenance assertions, which may include origin, edits, and AI use. Validation can support conclusions about the integrity of that record and its signer relationship; it does not establish that the scene or caption is true. C2PA describes the standard as something that “is not a cure-all for misinformation, but instead seeks to mitigate against its threats in the digital domain.” Read the C2PA and Content Credentials Explainer, version 2.2.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Treat visual and audio clues as leads
Inspect the clip for details worth checking: garbled text, implausible reflections or shadows, repeated patterns, inconsistent textures, lip-sync mismatches, or abrupt changes in image or sound. These can result from generation or editing, but also from compression, ordinary editing, motion, or other recording conditions. Visual inspection alone is not a reliable way to distinguish real, AI-enhanced, and fully generated media as techniques change.
7. Write a conclusion that matches the evidence
Separate what you established from what remains unknown. For example, you may be able to establish that a clip appeared online before the event claimed in its caption, while being unable to identify who recorded it. Or a credential may validate while leaving the truth of the scene unverified. If the evidence does not settle whether the video was generated or altered, say that it is inconclusive rather than calling it definitively real or fake.

What common checks can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can support | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Source and account review | Context about who posted the clip and what claim they make. | That the clip depicts the claimed event accurately. |
| Reverse search and chronology | Earlier appearances and possible original context; an earlier upload may contradict a later caption. | That a similar result is the exact same file, or that a matching clip is authentic. |
| Independent corroboration | Whether separate sources support the same event, place, and timeline. | Independence if sources merely repeat or repost one another. |
| Metadata | Capture or file details that may help investigate an original file. | Conclusive origin; metadata can be removed or edited. |
| C2PA Content Credentials | A validated provenance record and its signed assertions, if present and supported. | The truth of the depicted scene or caption, or proof that an uncredentialed file is fake. |
| Provider-specific watermark or provenance check | Whether a supported signal is detected for the media type and provider covered by that check. | A universal ruling about all AI tools, all edits, or the video’s truth. |
| Visual inspection or AI detector | Potential anomalies or signals that may guide further investigation. | A definitive authenticity verdict on its own. |
How to interpret AI checks and negative results
Watermarks cover a specific signal, not every generator
Google says SynthID can be checked for Google AI-generated or edited media and may remain detectable after some transformations, but repeated alterations can prevent detection. A check that does not find a signal is therefore not proof that a video was made without AI. Google announced expanded SynthID checks and C2PA credential verification on 19 May 2026; Gemini rollout was beginning then, while Search and Chrome availability was described as forthcoming. Availability can vary by product, geography, account, and rollout. Consult Google’s current Gemini guidance and its 19 May 2026 announcement for current scope.
Provider-specific provenance checks have defined coverage
OpenAI’s content-provenance API checks supported OpenAI provenance signals for images and audio; it is not described as a universal video deepfake detector. Its documentation says a not_detected result does not rule out OpenAI generation and that the check does not detect other companies’ AI models. Review OpenAI’s Content Provenance documentation for the supported inputs and signals before relying on a result.
Credentials and detection are different kinds of evidence
A provenance record concerns recorded history and signed assertions; a detector or watermark check looks for a particular signal. Neither answers every question about origin, editing, or whether the caption is true. Ofcom’s Attribution Toolkit discusses provenance metadata and verification services as part of attribution work.
A practical way to report your finding
Use wording that makes the evidence boundary explicit. For example: “This clip appeared in an earlier post dated before the event in the current caption, so that caption is misleading. I could not establish who recorded the footage.” Or: “The file has a validated Content Credential, but that record does not independently verify the event shown.” If no decisive evidence is available, say the clip’s origin or AI status could not be verified from the available copy and checks.
