The reliable way to test a new game engine is a controlled before-and-after comparison: measure the old build, repeat the same workload after the update, and keep your hardware, settings, software and measurement method unchanged. Compare average FPS together with frame-time spikes and stutters. The result describes performance on your PC under the tested conditions; it does not, by itself, prove that the engine was the only cause of a change.

If the old build is still available, capture its baseline now. If it is not, you can still document the updated build and compare it with an earlier recording, benchmark result or another controlled installation, but the conclusion will be less certain.

What a before-and-after test can prove

A repeatable test can establish that two game builds behave differently on the same computer, in the same scene and at the same settings. For example, you may find that the updated build delivers a higher average frame rate, lower worst-case frame times, fewer hitches, or some combination of those results.

It cannot isolate the engine as the cause when other variables changed. A game-content patch, graphics driver, operating-system update, shader-cache state, background task, thermal condition or altered setting can affect the result. Use narrow wording such as: “Across five comparable runs at these settings, the updated build averaged … and showed … frame-time behavior.” Avoid saying “the engine increased performance” unless you have stronger controlled evidence, such as developer-published benchmarks or genuinely comparable builds.

Record the old-build baseline

Write down the complete test configuration

Before updating, create a baseline record. Include the game build number or date, operating-system version, graphics-driver version, CPU, GPU, display resolution, graphics preset and every setting you changed individually. Also record the upscaler mode, frame-generation state, V-sync setting, frame cap, power mode and any overlays or recording tools that remain active.

Save a screenshot of the settings page if possible. A written record prevents a common mistake: comparing a new build at a different resolution, upscaling mode or frame limit and attributing the difference to the engine.

Choose a workload you can repeat

Use a built-in benchmark when the game provides one. A fixed benchmark is preferable because it repeats camera movement, effects and simulation more consistently than manual play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Without a benchmark, choose a saved location and a route you can reproduce. Include a representative demanding section, such as a busy city, large battle, effects-heavy encounter or traversal through an area that previously caused slowdowns. Record the route in enough detail that another run follows the same sequence. Do not compare a quiet menu or empty room in one build with combat or a crowded area in the other.

Keep the two tests comparable

Variable How to hold it steady Why it matters
Resolution and display mode Use the same output resolution and fullscreen, borderless or windowed mode. Changing either alters the rendering workload and can change frame pacing.
Graphics settings Match the preset and every individual option, including textures, shadows, ray tracing, effects and view distance. A single expensive option can outweigh an engine change.
Upscaling Keep the same technology and quality mode, or turn it off in both builds. Internal render resolution changes GPU work and image reconstruction behavior.
Frame generation Leave it enabled in both tests or disabled in both, and report the choice. Generated frames can raise the displayed rate without raising the rate of actual game frames.
V-sync and frame cap Use identical V-sync and cap settings. A cap can hide a faster build by making both runs stop at the same ceiling.
Drivers and operating system For the cleanest game-build comparison, use the same driver and OS. Record unavoidable changes. Driver and OS changes can alter shader compilation, scheduling and rendering.
Power and background load Use the same power mode, close downloads and unnecessary applications, and avoid recording or scans that occur in only one run. Background CPU, disk or network activity can create artificial stutters.
Temperature and warm-up Use the same warm-up approach and note whether the PC is cold, heat-soaked or power-limited. Thermal or power behavior can make later runs slower even with identical settings.

Run the comparison step by step

  1. Capture the baseline. Start the old build, confirm the recorded settings, and complete a warm-up pass. Then record multiple passes through the selected benchmark or route. Save the run number, average FPS, frame-time readings and any visible hitch.
  2. Stabilize the updated installation. After the engine update, let Steam finish downloads and allow obvious first-run shader compilation to complete. Do not record the first seconds of a new build while it is still compiling or streaming initial assets.
  3. Repeat the warm-up. Use the same warm-up length and sequence used for the baseline. If the old build had a warm-up pass, the updated build needs one too.
  4. Confirm every setting. Updates can reset presets, enable a new upscaler, change frame generation or alter a frame cap. Compare the settings record line by line before measuring.
  5. Run the identical workload. Use the same save, route, camera behavior and benchmark options. Start and stop measurement in the same places for every pass.
  6. Measure with one tool. Steam’s In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor can show FPS, CPU and GPU performance, and system memory. Depending on the operating system and hardware, some readings may not be available. Open the Steam overlay while the game is running and select the performance monitor; use the same detail level for both builds.
  7. Repeat the passes. Make several comparable runs rather than relying on the best result. Five runs is a useful practical target when the route is short, but the important requirement is consistency, not a particular count. Record the complete range and investigate large variation.
  8. Save the evidence. Keep screenshots or exported notes showing build, settings, monitor mode and results. A result that cannot be reconstructed later is difficult to defend.

Understand what Steam’s monitor is showing

FPS is an average, not a complete experience score

Steam’s support documentation describes its FPS display as the average frames per second, useful for measuring overall performance. An average can look healthy while a game still pauses briefly during traversal or combat.

Frame time reveals pacing problems

Frame time is the elapsed time between successive presented frames. Steam’s telemetry guidance reports a maximum, or slowest, frame time over a recent window; that value can expose a brief spike hidden by the average FPS. Frame-time values and FPS are related, but they are not necessarily reciprocal because frame durations vary from moment to moment.

When comparing builds, write down the average FPS and the worst or maximum frame-time reading exposed by your selected monitor. Also note visible hitching. A build with a slightly lower average but much steadier frame delivery may feel better than one with a higher average and severe spikes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generated frames are not the same as game frames

Steam’s monitor can distinguish generated-frame FPS from actual game FPS in its full detail level and can show per-second minimum and maximum single-game frame performance. Frame generation may make the displayed rate look much higher without increasing the rate at which the game simulates and renders real frames.

Keep frame generation in the same state for both builds. For an engine-rendering or responsiveness comparison, use actual game-frame performance rather than substituting the generated count. Report the setting explicitly so readers know what the number represents.

Utilization and memory are clues, not diagnoses

CPU load, GPU load and system-memory readings can suggest whether a workload is limited by a processor, graphics settings or memory pressure. They do not, by themselves, prove that a component is defective, that the engine is inefficient or that an upgrade is required. Treat them as context alongside frame time, scene behavior and repeatability.

Compare the results with more than one number

Metric What to record What it can tell you
Average FPS Average for each pass and the range across passes. Overall throughput during the selected workload.
Maximum or worst frame time The slowest recent frame-time value shown by the monitor. Brief stalls that an average can conceal.
Minimum and maximum single-game FPS Values shown when the monitor exposes them. How widely actual game-frame performance swings.
Visible stutters Time, scene and description of each hitch. Whether a numerical change corresponds to a perceptible improvement.
CPU and GPU readings Typical and peak behavior during the demanding section. Evidence about where the workload may be constrained, without proving a diagnosis.
System memory Memory use or pressure reported by the monitor. Useful context for streaming or paging-related variation.

Summarize each build with its run range rather than just the fastest pass. For example, report the average of the repeated passes, the lowest and highest pass averages, the worst frame-time reading and the scenes where hitches occurred. Preserve the units and definitions used by the monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check repeatability before claiming an improvement

Results that cluster tightly are easier to interpret. If one pass is dramatically faster or slower, inspect what happened during that run: a background download, notification, antivirus scan, shader compilation, temperature change, power-limit transition or route deviation can explain the outlier.

When variation remains, increase the number of passes and use the median or the middle of the observed range as a descriptive value, while still publishing the full range. Do not discard an inconvenient run merely because it weakens the conclusion; identify the cause or label it as unexplained variation.

Run the baseline and updated tests in the same order when possible, or alternate builds if both can be installed safely. This reduces the chance that one build always runs on a hotter system or after a long background task. If only one build is available now, state that the comparison is historical or indirect rather than presenting it as a clean controlled experiment.

Account for common confounding changes

Driver or operating-system updates

If the graphics driver or operating system changed between builds, record the versions and say so in the result. A driver can change shader behavior, scheduling or API paths. You may still observe a real difference between the installations, but you cannot attribute the entire difference to the engine.

Shader compilation and cache state

A newly updated game may compile shaders on first launch or while you move through new areas. Let that work finish when the game clearly indicates it is happening, then warm up the route before recording. Apply the same warm-up policy to the baseline if it is still available. If compilation continues during measured passes, mark those runs as contaminated rather than treating the hitch as steady-state engine performance.

Content and settings changes

An engine update may arrive with higher-quality assets, new lighting, altered crowd density or a changed default preset. Those are part of the updated build’s real workload, but they are not an isolated engine comparison. Record the content and setting differences and explain that the test measures the complete update as installed.

Thermal and power behavior

Long sessions can heat a laptop or desktop and trigger lower clocks. Keep the power mode consistent, allow similar idle time before each series, and note whether the system was plugged in. If the updated build is tested after the PC has warmed substantially, repeat the baseline under a matching thermal condition before drawing a conclusion.

Use an additional tool only when it answers a specific question

Steam’s built-in monitor is the simplest starting point because it is integrated with the game overlay. If you need more detailed capture, NVIDIA’s FrameView guide describes FPS, frame-time percentile and power measurements. Use one measurement tool consistently across both builds and document its metric definitions. Do not treat readings from different tools as interchangeable without checking how each one counts and samples frames.

Additional telemetry is useful when the average FPS is unchanged but frame-time percentiles, power draw or pacing differ. It is not a substitute for matching the scene, settings and software environment.

Interpret common result patterns

Higher average FPS and fewer spikes

This is the clearest positive result under the tested conditions. Report the measured range, frame-time behavior and workload, then qualify the conclusion if drivers, content or other variables changed.

Higher average FPS but worse stutters

The update increases throughput while harming frame pacing in your route. Describe both outcomes; calling it simply “faster” would hide the disruption.

Similar average FPS with lower worst-case frame time

The engine may not raise the headline rate, but the experience can become steadier. Emphasize the reduced spikes and the scenes in which they changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lower FPS with lower GPU utilization

Do not immediately label the GPU as faulty. Check for a CPU or simulation limit, a frame cap, background work, shader compilation, power behavior or a changed setting. Utilization alone cannot identify the cause.

Large run-to-run swings

Stop the comparison and fix the test conditions first. Verify the route, warm-up, downloads, overlays, power mode, temperatures and driver activity. A broad range is a result about test instability, not reliable evidence of an engine improvement.

How to report your conclusion

A useful report names the build, hardware, workload, settings, tool and repeated results. Use a compact format such as:

  • System: CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system and graphics-driver versions.
  • Builds: old and updated game build numbers or dates.
  • Workload: benchmark name or save location, route and demanding section.
  • Settings: resolution, preset, changed options, upscaler, frame generation, V-sync and frame cap.
  • Method: warm-up policy, monitor detail level and number of passes.
  • Results: average FPS range, frame-time range or worst reading, actual game-frame figures when available, and observed stutters.
  • Limitations: driver, OS, content, shader-cache or background changes that were not identical.

End with a narrowly supported statement: “In these repeated runs on this PC, the updated build measured differently in the selected workload.” Then specify whether the difference was throughput, frame pacing, or both. This is more accurate than assigning every change to the engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting an unreliable comparison

  • The new build is stuttery only on the first pass: finish downloads and shader compilation, repeat the warm-up, and measure later passes.
  • Both builds hit exactly the same FPS: check for an identical frame cap or V-sync ceiling before concluding that the engine made no difference.
  • Displayed FPS rises but responsiveness does not: inspect actual game-frame FPS and frame-generation status rather than relying on generated frames.
  • One run is much slower: check background processes, temperatures, power mode and whether the route or camera movement differed.
  • The monitor lacks a reading: note that availability depends on operating system and hardware, then use the metrics it does expose consistently.
  • You changed drivers after the baseline: either repeat the baseline with the same driver or state that the result includes a driver change and cannot isolate the engine.
