A pink ribbon is not proof that a purchase funds breast-cancer work. Before buying, identify the beneficiary’s legal name, verify its IRS and state registration, read the campaign’s donation formula and cap, and check independent financial information. If the seller cannot answer those questions—or insists on cryptocurrency, gift cards, a payment app, or a wire—do not buy. Donate directly through the charity’s independently verified website instead.
Start with the exact promise, not the ribbon
Breast-cancer awareness merchandise can support a real nonprofit, but the design alone tells you nothing about where money goes. “Supports breast-cancer research,” “helps families,” and a pink ribbon are marketing language unless the seller identifies a beneficiary and explains a measurable transfer.
Treat the offer as a purchase-linked charitable promotion. Your goal is to establish five facts before paying:

- the program or purpose that receives the money.
These details should be available on the product page, packaging, receipt, terms page, or from the seller and charity directly. If a claim remains vague after you ask, choose another product or give directly to a verified nonprofit.

Save the promotion before it changes
Online terms can be edited or removed after a campaign ends. Capture evidence while the offer is live so you can check what was promised and resolve a dispute later.
What to record
- Save a screenshot or PDF of the product page, including its fine print and any linked terms.
- Photograph the packaging, hangtag, or point-of-sale display if you are shopping in a store.
- Keep the receipt, order confirmation, and seller’s legal business name.
- Write down the beneficiary exactly as stated—not just an acronym or a slogan.
- Record whether the donation is per item, per order, a percentage of sales, or a share of proceeds.
- Note the campaign dates, eligible products, countries or states covered, and every stated cap or minimum.
A claim such as “a portion of proceeds” is materially different from “$1 donated per item.” Without a formula, you cannot calculate the likely contribution or compare it with another campaign.
Identify the beneficiary’s legal identity
Do not infer a charity from a logo, ribbon, social-media post, or a broad cause phrase. Find the organization’s complete legal name and independently open its official website by typing the address yourself or finding it through a trusted directory. A look-alike domain can imitate a legitimate nonprofit.

Questions that resolve identity
- What is the nonprofit’s full legal name and, if relevant, its “doing business as” name?
- Does the seller name the charity, or merely say that it “supports” a cause?
- Is the beneficiary a nonprofit, a fiscal sponsor, a hospital foundation, or another entity?
- Does the charity’s own website acknowledge this specific product promotion?
The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance advises confirming the exact charity name and researching it before giving. If the promotion names only a campaign, influencer, store, or foundation without identifying the organization that receives funds, pause until the legal beneficiary is clear.
Check IRS and state records
Legal status is an identity check, not a guarantee that a campaign is effective. Use the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search to confirm that the named organization has the claimed federal tax-exempt status. Then check the charity regulator in the state where the solicitation reaches you. State rules and registration requirements vary, and registration does not mean a regulator endorses the product.

What to match
- Exact legal name, including punctuation and organizational suffixes.
- Employer Identification Number (EIN), when the charity publishes one.
- Active IRS status and the organization’s stated exemption category.
- State registration or an applicable exemption from registration.
- Address, officers, and website details that are consistent across records.
The FTC’s business guidance tells fundraisers to verify that a charity “has 501(c)(3) status with the IRS” and “is registered to solicit donations in your state.” A mismatch—such as an unfamiliar legal entity, an inactive record, or a name that differs from the product page—requires an explanation before you buy. Some legitimate organizations use a parent corporation or fiscal sponsor, but the relationship should be documented rather than assumed.
Use independent accountability sources
Government records establish identity and registration. Independent evaluators add context about governance, finances, programs, and complaints. Look up the beneficiary in the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, CharityWatch, Charity Navigator, or Candid.

- Recent financial statements and Form 990 filings.
- How the charity describes its programs and measures results.
- Board governance, conflicts-of-interest policies, and audited information where available.
- Fundraising and administrative expenses, interpreted in context rather than as a single magic ratio.
- Complaints, enforcement actions, or unresolved questions.
- Whether the charity publicly identifies corporate campaigns and reports the amounts received.
BBB says donors can use BBB Wise Giving Alliance or BBB.org and assess its 20 Charity Standards. Ratings and profiles can change, and an evaluator may not cover every organization. Treat a missing profile as “not independently reviewed,” not as proof of wrongdoing.
Read the charity’s own annual report and filings alongside watchdog information. A familiar name or attractive rating cannot substitute for checking the particular promotion and the period in which it operates.
Test the donation calculation
Ask the seller or charity for a precise answer before checkout. The FTC advises donors to ask how much reaches the programs they care about and to review financial information.

Questions to send in writing
- “What exact dollar amount or percentage is donated for this product?”
- “Is the amount calculated per item, per order, or from net proceeds after costs?”
- “Is there a minimum contribution, a maximum per customer, or a campaign-wide cap?”
- “What are the start and end dates, and which locations or purchases qualify?”
- “When will the money be transferred to the beneficiary?”
- “Which program, fund, or restricted purpose receives it?”
- “Will you publish a post-campaign total or confirmation of the transfer?”
Keep the response with your purchase records. “Up to 20%,” “a portion,” and “proceeds may be donated” do not tell you what a normal transaction contributes. A percentage can also be based on different denominators: retail price, gross sales, or net profit. The terms should define that basis.
Read caps and exclusions carefully
A campaign might advertise a high percentage but cap total giving at a relatively small amount. Other offers exclude discounts, returns, shipping, wholesale orders, or purchases outside a particular country. A one-time campaign allowance is not a recurring commitment. Put the amount, formula, cap, and exclusions in the same comparison note so you do not mistake the headline percentage for the expected donation.
Verify the cause-marketing terms
BBB Wise Giving Alliance guidance treats a purchase or proof-of-purchase promotion as a cause-marketing claim. A credible offer identifies the benefiting charity and explains how the donation is calculated. Look for terms that answer:
- which products qualify;
- what action proves a qualifying purchase;
- the donation amount or formula;
- the campaign period and geographic scope;
- any cap, minimum, or excluded transaction; and
- how and when the beneficiary receives the funds.
Terms should be accessible before payment, not hidden behind a post-purchase request. If a seller says that “all proceeds” are donated, ask whether that means revenue, profit after expenses, or a specified amount. If the charity is only one of several beneficiaries, ask how the allocation is divided.
Compare competing products on evidence, not percentage
When two products support breast-cancer causes, use the same questions for each. A larger advertised percentage is not persuasive if the beneficiary or calculation cannot be independently verified.

Mark a cell “not stated” when the seller does not provide the information. Do not fill gaps with assumptions or award a campaign credit for an amount that cannot be checked.
Choose a payment method that leaves a record
For a legitimate retailer, a credit card or check generally gives you a transaction record and a path to dispute an unauthorized or misrepresented charge. Save the order number, receipt, terms, and correspondence.
The FTC warns that an appeal insisting that the only payment method is cryptocurrency, a gift card, a payment app, or a wire transfer is likely a scam rather than a real charity. A seller may offer several payment options, but “only this irreversible method” is a major warning sign. Never send a gift-card number or cryptocurrency code to someone claiming that it is required to unlock a donation or secure a product.
If you already paid through a risky method
- Stop communicating through the suspicious link or account and do not send additional money.
- Contact the payment provider immediately and ask whether a reversal, freeze, or fraud report is possible.
- Change passwords reused on the seller’s site and enable multi-factor authentication.
- Report the promotion to the platform where you saw it and to the relevant consumer-protection authority.
- Preserve screenshots, wallet addresses, receipts, messages, and shipping information.
Recognize red flags that justify walking away
- The product shows only a pink ribbon or “awareness” wording and names no beneficiary.
- The seller refuses to state a dollar amount, percentage, cap, dates, or destination program.
- The named organization cannot be found in IRS or state records.
- The promotion points to a charity look-alike domain or asks you to trust a social-media repost.
- Urgency, countdowns, emotional pressure, or claims about helping families replace concrete terms.
- The seller will not explain whether the percentage is based on gross sales, net proceeds, or another figure.
- The campaign uses a charity’s name without confirmation from that charity.
- Payment is limited to cryptocurrency, gift cards, payment apps, or wire transfers.
One missing detail may be an oversight; several together indicate that you should not proceed. You can buy a similar item without the donation claim and give separately through a verified charity if you want both the product and the charitable impact.
Understand why financial follow-up matters
Marketing language can sound generous while the eventual program spending is limited or directed elsewhere. In a 2025 enforcement report, the Federal Trade Commission said Kars raised $45.5 million for United Breast Cancer Foundation between 2017 and 2022, while the foundation spent less than 1% of that money on breast-cancer screenings. The figures concern that enforcement example, not every breast-cancer product campaign. They show why you should compare the promotion’s promise with the beneficiary’s filings, program descriptions, and spending—not assume that a recognizable cause label proves impact.

Look for the charity’s description of the fund and its actual use. “Research” might mean grants, laboratory work, patient navigation, education, or general operations. A restricted campaign may have different reporting from an unrestricted gift. If the seller promises support for a particular program but the charity cannot identify that program, ask for clarification before purchasing.
What to do when answers are incomplete
Ask the seller and charity separately
Send the same written questions to the seller and the beneficiary. Their answers should agree on the amount, dates, cap, and destination. A seller that says “ask the charity” and a charity that says “ask the seller” have not established the claim.
Check the timing
Some campaigns transfer funds after returns close or after a quarterly reconciliation. That can be legitimate if the terms state the timing. Mark the promised transfer date and look for a later report. Absence of an immediate transfer is not proof of fraud; refusal to state any transfer process is a reason to avoid the offer.

If the product promotion remains unclear, use the charity’s independently verified website and make a direct donation. You can designate a program if the charity offers that option and retain the receipt. This removes uncertainty about the retailer’s formula and ensures that you are dealing with the organization you researched.
A compact pre-purchase checklist
- I saved the product page, terms, packaging, and receipt.
- I have the beneficiary’s exact legal name.
- I matched the organization to IRS and state records.
- I checked at least one independent accountability source and the charity’s own filings or reports.
- I know the donation amount or formula, calculation basis, cap, dates, and geographic limits.
- I know which program or fund receives the money.
- I know when the seller will transfer the funds and whether post-campaign reporting is promised.
- I can pay by credit card or check and receive a normal transaction record.
- No one is pressuring me to act immediately or use an irreversible payment method.
Current campaign terms, ratings, and registration status are time-sensitive. Recheck them for the specific product, seller, and geography on the day you buy.
