If Planet Zoo 2 crashes, shows “Failure to Save,” or stops opening a zoo, use this order: make a copy of the local save folder, verify the Steam installation, check the Windows Saved Games location, and only then investigate Steam Cloud. File verification can replace damaged installation files, but it cannot reconstruct a corrupted zoo save. A missing save directory requires Frontier’s documented location-restoration procedure; an unresolved save failure should be sent to Frontier Support with the affected files and your 17-digit Steam64ID.
Frontier’s support documentation generally calls the game “Planet Zoo,” while players may see a different title in a Steam library or use “Planet Zoo 2” when describing it. Select the Planet Zoo installation that contains your saves; the recovery steps below apply to the Steam PC installation described by Frontier.
What each recovery action can—and cannot—fix
There are four different failure types that are often described as a “corrupted save.” Treating them as the same problem can make recovery harder, especially if Steam Cloud offers to replace one copy with another.

The safest principle is simple: never let a verification or cloud decision be your first operation on the only copy of the save. Copy the folder first, then work on the installation and synchronization problems.

1. Protect the current save before changing anything
Close the game and Steam
Exit Planet Zoo 2 normally if it is responsive. If it is frozen, close it from Windows and then exit Steam. The purpose is to stop the game or Steam from writing to the save while you copy it. Do not begin by deleting, moving, renaming, or “cleaning” files inside the save folder.
Open the documented save location
- Open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar, type
shell:SavedGames, and press Enter. - Look for the Planet Zoo directory. Frontier documents the local save location as
C:Users%username%Saved Games; theshell:SavedGamesshortcut opens that location for the signed-in Windows account.
If File Explorer opens the folder, copy the entire Planet Zoo directory rather than selecting individual zoo files. A whole-folder copy preserves the surrounding files and makes it possible to explain exactly what was present when the failure occurred.
Make an independent copy
Paste the copied directory somewhere separate from the working save location, such as a USB flash drive or another external drive. A separate device is an operational precaution: it protects the backup if you accidentally overwrite files in the original folder. Do not move the original folder; copy it.

Keep this untouched copy until the zoo opens and saves successfully again, or until Frontier Support tells you which files it needs. If Steam displays a cloud-conflict prompt later, return to this backup before choosing an option.
If the folder is already missing
If shell:SavedGames does not open the expected location, do not assume that the zoo is permanently deleted. Continue to the Saved Games restoration section below. If the folder opens but contains no Planet Zoo directory, preserve what is present and avoid creating replacement files by repeatedly launching the game; a new launch can make it harder to identify the original state.

2. Verify the Steam installation
Verification is the right test for damaged or incomplete files belonging to the installed game. It is not a save-file repair utility. Steam compares the installation with its own file records and may download replacements, while leaving your user saves outside that installation check.
Use Steam’s current Library path
- Restart Steam. This gives the client a clean opportunity to complete pending updates or file checks.
- Open Library.
- Find the Planet Zoo installation. Right-click it, or select the gear icon on its library page.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish before launching the game again. Steam notes that the process can take several minutes.
The labels above are Steam’s documented path. If the client window is narrow or Steam has moved a control, look for the same three concepts—Properties, Installed Files, and the integrity-verification button—rather than selecting an unrelated repair or uninstall command.

A message that one or more files failed verification is not automatically a new failure. Steam explains that this can happen normally when local configuration files are not replaced by the check. Record the final message, but do not repeatedly run verification expecting it to rebuild a damaged zoo. If the verification completes, launch the game once and test the affected action; keep the backup until you know whether saving works.
What verification will not do
- It will not reconstruct a zoo whose save data is internally corrupted.
- It will not guarantee that an older cloud version is available.
- It will not decide which copy is correct when two machines have unsynchronized edits.
- It will not restore a missing Windows Saved Games directory by itself.
Those cases require the separate checks below. Treat verification as an installation diagnosis, not as permission to overwrite every copy of the user data.
3. Check and restore the Windows Saved Games directory
Confirm the expected path
Frontier states that Planet Zoo save games should be stored in C:Users%username%Saved Games. The environment variable %username% represents the Windows account currently in use; you do not need to replace it manually when using the shell shortcut.

- In File Explorer, enter
shell:SavedGamesin the address bar. - Check whether the Planet Zoo directory is present.
- If it is present, do not replace it with a newly generated folder. Use the copy you made in step 1 as the protected reference.
Use Frontier’s restoration procedure when the folder is missing
Frontier provides an attachment named Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.bat for cases in which the default Saved Games folder is absent. Save that attachment and run it as directed by Frontier’s support instructions, then retry the game. The attachment is a location-restoration procedure; it is not a tool that repairs the bytes inside a corrupted zoo.
Because the batch file changes a Windows folder location, follow Frontier’s directions exactly and do not substitute a script from an unrelated download. Keep your copied save directory separate while you perform this step. After the location has been restored, reopen shell:SavedGames and check whether the Planet Zoo directory is visible before testing a save.
Distinguish a missing path from a damaged save
A missing directory means the game may have nowhere to read or write its local data. A directory that exists but contains a zoo that crashes or triggers “Failure to Save” points to a different problem. Restoring the default path can solve the first condition, but it should not be presented as a cure for the second. Note which condition you observed when you contact support.
4. Treat Steam Cloud as a possible copy, not a guaranteed backup
What Frontier says is synchronized
Frontier says Planet Zoo supports Steam Cloud Saves for the zoos you build and your career progress. That means a cloud copy may exist for relevant progress, but it does not establish that every historical version of every save remains available.
Why a cloud conflict appears
Steam explains that edits made on two machines without synchronization can produce a conflict. The local files and the cloud files then represent different states, and Steam asks you to choose how to proceed. A conflict prompt is not proof that either copy is healthy; it is evidence that Steam sees a difference.

Safe handling of a conflict
- Stop at the prompt rather than accepting the first replacement option.
- Confirm that the local Planet Zoo directory has been copied to a separate location.
- Note which machine you used, when it last opened the zoo, and whether the failure occurred before or after a save attempt.
- Only after preserving the local copy should you review Steam’s available local-versus-cloud choices.
- If the choices are unclear, leave the preserved copy untouched and ask Frontier Support for guidance instead of repeatedly switching synchronization on and off.
Steam warns that Steam Support generally cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. Cloud synchronization should therefore be treated as one possible source of a usable copy, not as a guaranteed restore point. Do not delete the local folder merely because Steam reports that cloud data exists.
When cloud data appears newer but the zoo still fails
A newer timestamp does not prove that a save is valid. If the cloud copy opens but the local copy does not, keep both copies until you have tested the zoo and confirmed that it can save again. If neither copy works, stop testing destructive options and preserve the evidence for Frontier.
5. Use the symptom to choose the next step

This separation prevents a common mistake: using an installation remedy for a user-data problem. Each result tells you which evidence to preserve and which operation is safe to try next.

Record the exact circumstances
Write down what was happening immediately before the message: whether you were opening an existing zoo, entering career progress, saving manually, or leaving the game. Note whether the game crashed, returned to the menu, or remained open with the error. Also record whether the issue affects one zoo or every zoo you test. These observations give support a reproducible description without requiring you to alter the files.
Perform one controlled retest
After verification and any Saved Games location restoration, launch the game once. Test the affected zoo only after confirming that its local folder is still present. If it saves, close the game normally and keep the backup until a second launch confirms the result. If it fails again, stop changing files; repeated launches can create additional states that make cloud and local comparisons less clear.

Do not claim a recovery that has not been demonstrated
A game that reaches the main menu is not necessarily recovered. The meaningful test is whether the affected zoo opens and can complete a save without producing the error. Until that happens, describe the situation as unresolved and retain the original folder.
7. Escalate to Frontier Support with useful evidence
Frontier’s PC troubleshooting guidance asks for the circumstances of the crash and the user’s 17-digit Steam64ID. Include those details rather than sending only “my save is corrupted.” Explain that you:
- copied the Planet Zoo directory from
shell:SavedGamesbefore making changes; - ran Steam’s Verify integrity of game files check and recorded its result;
- checked whether
C:Users%username%Saved Gamesexisted; - used the documented Saved Games restoration procedure if the folder was missing;
- saw, or did not see, a Steam Cloud conflict; and
- still experience a crash or “Failure to Save,” including the exact point at which it occurs.
Preserve the affected save folder in its original state. If support requests files, provide the copy they specify rather than editing the only remaining version. Keep your backup until the case is closed or you have independently confirmed that the zoo saves correctly.
Why the Steam64ID matters
The Steam64ID is a 17-digit identifier that Frontier requests for PC troubleshooting. Supply the number exactly as requested and distinguish it from a display name or a shorter account identifier. Including the correct identifier helps support associate the report with the relevant Steam installation.
Common mistakes that reduce recovery options
- Verifying before backing up: verification addresses installed files, but the safest workflow starts with a copy of the user data.
- Deleting the local folder to force a cloud download: Steam warns that lost saves may not be recoverable; retain the local copy instead.
- Choosing a cloud conflict option immediately: a prompt indicates two versions, not which version is healthy.
- Running unrelated cleanup software: use Steam and Frontier’s documented procedures so you know which change was made.
- Repeatedly launching after a failure: multiple new writes can make it harder to identify the state that first failed.
- Sending support an edited file: preserve the original and make working copies for any experiments.
- Assuming a missing folder and a corrupted file are the same: restore the Windows location only when the location itself is missing, then diagnose the save separately.
A concise recovery checklist
- Close Planet Zoo 2 and Steam.
- Open
shell:SavedGames. - Copy the entire Planet Zoo directory to a separate device or location.
- Restart Steam and run Library → Planet Zoo → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Check that the save directory is
C:Users%username%Saved Games. - If the directory is missing, use Frontier’s
Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.batprocedure. - Handle any Steam Cloud conflict only after the local copy is safe.
- Retest once. If saving still fails, preserve the files and contact Frontier Support with the crash circumstances and 17-digit Steam64ID.
Following the checklist in this order keeps installation repair, folder restoration, cloud selection, and support escalation separate. That separation gives you the best chance of retaining every available copy while avoiding an irreversible overwrite.
