Verify a COLDCARD firmware download in two layers before installing it: first confirm the OpenPGP signature on the official signatures.txt manifest, then calculate the firmware file’s SHA-256 hash and match it to the signed manifest entry. Start at COLDCARD’s own documentation, select the exact hardware model and release family, and let the device perform its built-in signature checks during installation and boot.

Start at the official COLDCARD download route

Type coldcard.com into the address bar or open a bookmark you created yourself. From there, use the official downloads documentation: https://coldcard.com/docs/downloads/. That page directs owners to the firmware area and notes that historical releases remain available for older hardware.

Do not use a firmware file attached to an unsolicited email, a social-media post, a forum reply, a reseller’s support page, or a lookalike domain. A page can copy COLDCARD’s logo and wording while serving a modified file. The safest navigation pattern is to enter the known domain yourself and follow links from the company’s documentation.

Identify the device and release family before downloading

Firmware compatibility is determined by the hardware generation and release channel, not by a similar-looking filename. Confirm the model from the device’s own menus, label, or documentation, then select the matching family on the official all-downloads listing. If you cannot determine the model with certainty, stop and resolve that question before saving a firmware file.

Decision What to confirm Why it matters
Hardware model Mk5, Mk4, Mk3, Mk2, or Q Each generation has its own compatible firmware family; a close filename is not evidence of compatibility.
Channel Standard fixed release or Edge build The all-downloads page lists these separately. Edge is not interchangeable with the standard release line.
Version and date The exact version shown for your model Release listings change over time, and older hardware may require a historical release.
File type The complete official .dfu file Partial downloads, renamed files, or files obtained from another source cannot be verified against the intended manifest.

The official firmware guidance says to use a file intended for your model and to verify the model and release family. Never infer that a Mk4 file works on a Mk5, or that a Q file belongs to another generation, simply because the names look related.

Save the complete release files

  1. Open the model-specific standard release section on the official all-downloads page. Choose Edge only when you deliberately need that channel and its documentation identifies it as compatible with your device.
  2. Download the full firmware file ending in .dfu. Preserve the original filename and extension; do not open it in an editor or rename it to hide its origin.
  3. Download the matching signed signatures.txt manifest from the same official release route. Keep both files in one folder so you can identify exactly which manifest you checked.
  4. Record the displayed version and release date. This information lets you detect a stale bookmark or a file copied from a different release family.

A checksum copied from an unsigned web page is not a substitute for the signed manifest. The manifest must itself pass OpenPGP verification before its hash entries can be trusted for this purpose.

Verify the OpenPGP signature on signatures.txt

The first verification layer checks that the manifest was signed by the release key and that its contents have not changed. Install GnuPG from your operating system’s trusted package source if it is not already available. The official upgrade instructions provide the public-key fingerprint and import procedure; reproduce those instructions exactly rather than obtaining a key from an unverified message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a terminal in the folder containing signatures.txt and the downloaded firmware file.
  2. Import the official public key using the key-import command specified in the current COLDCARD upgrade guide. Check the fingerprint against the value printed by that guide before relying on the key.
  3. Run gpg --verify signatures.txt.
  4. Read the complete result. A successful check includes a Good signature message. GnuPG may also display a warning that the key is not certified with a trusted signature; that warning concerns your local trust database and does not, by itself, mean the signed bytes were altered.

If GnuPG reports a bad signature, an unknown key, a missing key, or a different signer than the official instructions specify, do not proceed. Reacquire both files from the official route and repeat the key-fingerprint check. Never dismiss a bad-signature error because the filename or version number looks correct.

Match the firmware’s SHA-256 hash to the signed manifest

Once the manifest’s OpenPGP signature is valid, calculate a hash of the exact .dfu file you intend to install. A SHA-256 hash is a digest of the file’s bytes; changing even one byte produces a different result.

Linux

Run sha256sum -- your-selected-file.dfu. The command prints a 64-character hexadecimal digest followed by the filename.

macOS

Run shasum -a 256 your-selected-file.dfu. Compare the resulting 64-character digest with the entry for the same filename and version in signatures.txt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows PowerShell

Run Get-FileHash .your-selected-file.dfu -Algorithm SHA256. Compare the value in the Hash field with the manifest entry, ignoring capitalization but not any character.

  1. Locate the manifest line for the exact firmware filename you selected.
  2. Confirm that the version and model in that line match your device and your download choice.
  3. Compare the entire local SHA-256 value with the manifest value. A partial visual match is not sufficient.
  4. Stop if the digest differs, if the filename is absent, or if the manifest refers to another model or release family. Delete the suspect file and download a fresh copy through the official route.

Both layers are required. A matching hash proves only that your file matches the manifest entry; an unsigned or unverified manifest could contain a hash for an altered file. Conversely, a valid manifest signature does not prove that you selected the correct model’s file. Model selection, signature verification, and hash comparison answer different questions.

Install only after the file checks pass

Follow the current official upgrade and recovery instructions for your model after completing the two file checks. The documented Mk4, Mk5, and Q upgrade architecture independently verifies the firmware signature during installation. The repository’s recovery documentation states that when the system boots, it always checks the firmware signature. This device-side check is an additional control; it does not replace checking the download yourself.

  1. Safely eject or disconnect the storage media used to transfer the verified file according to the current upgrade instructions.
  2. Use the device menu path and button sequence documented for your exact model. Do not apply instructions for a different generation.
  3. Allow the installation and reboot checks to finish without interrupting power. If the device rejects the image, treat that as a stop condition, not as a prompt to bypass security.
  4. After reboot, open the device’s status or firmware-information screen and confirm that the displayed version is the one you verified.

A successful installation means the device accepted its own signature checks and started the selected firmware. It does not establish that an old seed generated by an earlier firmware version is safe; that is a separate advisory issue described below.

Family Fixed standard release shown Interpretation
COLDCARD Mk5 / Mk4 5.6.3 Standard fixed-release entry for those two model generations in the dated listing.
COLDCARD Q 1.5.3Q Standard fixed-release entry for the Q family in the dated listing.
Mk3 / Mk2 Legacy firmware listed separately Use the historical entry that matches the exact device; do not substitute a Mk4, Mk5, or Q file.
Edge Mk / Q Edge builds listed separately Do not confuse an Edge build with the standard fixed release.

This is a dated snapshot, not a permanent “latest” claim. Check the all-downloads page immediately before an upgrade because release versions, dates, and channel labels can change. The version number on a search result or an old screenshot is not current-release evidence.

Understand the 2021–July 2026 entropy advisory

The official firmware repository README says that versions from 2021 to July 2026 had a bug that produced poor entropy. It lists minimum seed-trust thresholds by family:

Family Minimum threshold named in the advisory
Mk4 / Mk5 5.6.0
Q1 1.5.0Q
Mk3 4.2.0
Edge Mk / Q 6.6.0

The dated all-downloads entries above are marked as fixed releases, but installing a fixed firmware version is not proof that a seed created under an affected version is safe. The README says affected secrets require action and directs owners to the full current advisory for regeneration or migration steps, including its stated exception. Determine which firmware generated the seed, follow the advisory for that circumstance, and do not move funds merely because the upgrade completed successfully.

How to recognize an official firmware-help or support destination

The official firmware-help article is an appropriate destination for firmware-specific troubleshooting. It points readers toward downloads, upgrade instructions, release history, and device-status checks, and it was reviewed on July 17, 2026. Reach it through the official COLDCARD site rather than copying a URL from a social post or an unsolicited message.

The available official material does not establish a single general purchase-support, account-support, or security-reporting URL. For those matters, use only a support destination reached from the current official site navigation. Do not guess a path, use a marketplace seller’s contact page, or assume that a domain with “support” in its name is genuine. If a message directs you elsewhere, return to coldcard.com and navigate afresh.

Support-link checks

  • Check that the address bar shows the expected official domain and uses HTTPS.
  • Navigate from the official home or documentation pages instead of trusting a link supplied by a stranger.
  • Be wary of lookalike spellings, extra hyphens, substituted characters, URL shorteners, and unexpected file-download prompts.
  • Never disclose a seed phrase, PIN, passphrase, or private key to a support contact. Legitimate troubleshooting should not require those secrets.
  • For firmware questions, use the official firmware-help destination; for other categories, select a route presented by the official site itself.

What the checks prove—and what they do not

  • OpenPGP verification proves: the manifest’s signed content verifies under the public key you used and has not changed since signing.
  • SHA-256 comparison proves: the bytes of your selected firmware file match the hash recorded for that filename in the signed manifest.
  • Device verification proves: on the documented Mk4, Mk5, and Q upgrade architecture, the device accepted its firmware-signature checks during installation and boot.
  • None of these checks alone proves: that you obtained the correct public key through an independently trusted channel. Confirm the fingerprint and import steps from the current official guide.
  • None of these checks proves: that a seed generated by an affected historical firmware version is safe. Handle that question under the entropy advisory.

Optional: reproducible-build comparison for advanced users

The official firmware repository documents an optional reproducible-build path. A technically capable owner can build a specific release from the documented source and compare the firmware portion with the published binary, accounting for embedded signature bytes. This is an independent comparison, not a requirement for routine upgrades.

Reproducible builds require the exact release source, documented toolchain, and enough technical skill to interpret differences. If the build does not match, stop and investigate rather than installing either artifact. For most owners, the supported baseline remains: correct model selection, a valid OpenPGP signature on signatures.txt, a matching local SHA-256 hash, and the device’s own installation checks.

Troubleshooting a failed verification

Symptom Likely issue Safe response
“Good signature” is absent Wrong key, damaged manifest, or a file from another route Check the official fingerprint instructions, reacquire the manifest, and verify again.
GnuPG shows a certification warning Your local trust database does not mark the key as trusted Do not ignore the fingerprint check; a certification warning is different from a bad signature.
Hash differs from the manifest Incomplete, corrupted, or wrong-model download Do not install. Delete the file and download the exact release again.
Filename is not in signatures.txt Files came from different releases or channels Obtain the firmware and manifest together from one official release route.
Device rejects the firmware Wrong model, wrong channel, or failed device-side signature check Stop, identify the model and release family again, and follow the model-specific recovery instructions.
Version shown after reboot is unexpected Wrong file selected or installation did not complete as intended Do not assume success; compare the displayed version with the verified release record.

A repeatable pre-install checklist

  • Entered coldcard.com directly or used a trusted bookmark.
  • Confirmed the exact hardware model on the device.
  • Selected standard or Edge deliberately and verified that the channel matches the intended release.
  • Downloaded the complete .dfu file and its matching signatures.txt manifest from the same official route.
  • Imported the public key according to the current official guide and checked its fingerprint.
  • Received a successful Good signature result from GnuPG.
  • Calculated SHA-256 locally and matched every character to the signed manifest entry.
  • Checked the release date and version immediately before installation.
  • Followed the exact model-specific upgrade procedure and allowed device-side checks to complete.
  • Reviewed the entropy advisory if the seed was created under a firmware version covered by its warning.

If any item fails, do not “try it anyway.” Reacquire the files through the official route, resolve the model or key discrepancy, and repeat the checks before installing.

The Bottom Line

Use the official COLDCARD documentation route, match the firmware to the exact model and channel, verify the signed signatures.txt manifest with OpenPGP, compare a local SHA-256 hash, and then rely on the device’s built-in signature checks. Treat release listings and support navigation as time-sensitive, and handle affected historical seeds separately under the current entropy advisory.
