npm provenance verification shows whether a published package can be traced to a source repository, a specific commit, and the build instructions used to create it. The practical workflow is to inspect the package’s provenance panel on npmjs.com, install the dependency in a controlled environment with npm CLI 9.5.0 or newer, and run npm audit signatures. Treat a successful result as supply-chain evidence—not proof that the code is harmless.
There is an important sequencing detail: npm verifies signatures and attestations for packages it has downloaded. You can review provenance details before adding a dependency to a production project, but the command-line verification itself happens after npm install or npm ci.
The verification workflow at a glance
- Check the package page first. On npmjs.com, look for the green check beside the version and open its provenance details.
- Confirm your npm version. Provenance verification with
npm audit signaturesrequires npm CLI 9.5.0 or later. npm recommends using the latest CLI because attestation formats and verification support can evolve. See npm’s package-provenance documentation and npm’s audit documentation. - Install in a controlled checkout. Use the project’s lockfile with
npm ci, or usenpm installwhen you are intentionally resolving dependencies. - Verify downloaded packages. Run
npm audit signatures. - Investigate the evidence. Compare the repository, commit, workflow, build file, publisher and transparency-log record with what you expected.
- Run the separate vulnerability audit. Use
npm auditas a complementary check; it answers a different question.

What npm provenance actually establishes
A provenance attestation is a signed, verifiable relationship between a package and the source code and build instructions used in its build environment. A separate publish attestation records publication to the registry by an authorized user. npm describes provenance as a way to audit where and how a package was built, not as a blanket security certification. Read npm’s “Generating provenance statements” documentation for the model and terminology.

“Instead, npm provenance provides a verifiable link to the package’s source code and build instructions, which developers can then audit and determine whether to trust it or not.”
The distinction matters. Provenance can answer “What source and build process produced this tarball?” It cannot answer “Is every line of that source safe?” Your review still has to cover the linked code, workflow and the package’s behavior in your application.
Review the package page before adding the dependency
Use the public package page to form an expectation before you change your project. Select the exact version you intend to use rather than assuming that the latest release has the same build evidence as older releases.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Find the provenance indicator
On npmjs.com, locate the green check mark beside the version and open the provenance details. npm checks the linked repository and source commit when the details are opened. If it cannot establish the relationship—for example, because the repository was deleted or made private—it displays a warning. Those warnings are a reason to pause and investigate, not a reason to silently assume the package is malicious.
Check the build environment and workflow
Read the named build environment and the build summary or workflow run. Ask whether the workflow is one the project actually uses, whether the trigger and repository match the release process, and whether the build appears to produce the package you are considering. A provenance link is useful only when the linked process is itself understandable and trusted.
Check the source commit and build file
Open the source commit and the build file referenced by the attestation. Verify that the commit belongs to the expected repository, that its contents correspond to the release, and that the build instructions explain how the published artifact was produced. A tag or release name alone is not enough evidence; the attestation’s specific commit is the object to review.

Check the publisher and transparency log
Compare the publisher shown by npm with the publisher you expected to authorize. Then open the public transparency-log entry. The log gives you a durable record of the attestation that can be retained with your review. If the publisher, repository or commit is inconsistent with your expectation, stop and resolve that discrepancy before treating the package as approved.

Use a supported npm CLI
Check the installed CLI:
npm --version
For the combined signature-and-provenance workflow, use npm CLI 9.5.0 or newer. npm’s registry-signature documentation lists npm CLI 8.15.0 or newer for signature verification alone, but the provenance workflow has the newer 9.5.0 prerequisite. Following the newer requirement avoids confusing a signature-only capability with full provenance support. See npm’s registry-signature verification documentation.
Prefer the current npm CLI available for your environment. npm notes that attestation formats and verification support can change, so an old CLI can give you less coverage than the registry currently supports.
Install the exact dependency set you plan to review
In a project with a committed lockfile, use:
npm ci
npm ci installs the lockfile’s dependency tree without intentionally resolving a new one. Use:
npm install
when you are adding or deliberately updating dependencies. Run the signature check against the resulting installation, not against a package name you have not downloaded.
Run npm audit signatures
From the project directory, run:
npm audit signatures
npm verifies the registry signatures and provenance attestations available for the downloaded packages under the registry’s supported signature conventions. A passing result means the available cryptographic evidence verified; it does not mean the packages are vulnerability-free or benign.

For a record that can be inspected by a script or attached to a change review, run:
npm audit signatures --json --include-attestations
Save the resulting JSON with the dependency-change record if your process requires reproducible review. The output may include attestation bundles, verification material and transparency-log entries, which are more useful for later investigation than a human-readable pass/fail line alone.
How to interpret the result
| Result or evidence | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Signature and provenance verification succeeds | The downloaded packages’ available registry signatures and attestations verified under npm’s supported conventions. | Continue the human review of source, workflow and build instructions. Do not describe the result as a malware or vulnerability certificate. |
| Provenance details show a matching repository, commit and workflow | The package can be linked to the source and build process represented by those records. | Read the linked source and build file, and confirm the publisher is authorized for your project’s trust boundary. |
| The package has no visible provenance | There is no provenance evidence available for that release in the place you are viewing. | Check whether the publisher’s publishing arrangement supports npm provenance. Missing provenance alone is not proof of an attack. |
| The CLI reports missing signatures | For registries that support signatures, npm’s signature-verification documentation says the CLI errors when packages lack signatures. | Read the complete error and confirm which registry supplied the package. Do not treat an error as a successful check. |
| npmjs.com displays a repository or commit warning | npm could not establish the expected link, such as when a repository was deleted or made private. | Contact the maintainer or obtain an independently documented release explanation before approval. |
Registry context is essential. Provenance depends on supported publishing arrangements, including supported cloud CI/CD providers. A package without provenance may simply have been published through an arrangement that does not produce an attestation. Conversely, a registry that supports signatures may intentionally reject unsigned packages. Interpret the exact message and the configured registry rather than converting every absence into the same security conclusion.
Use the provenance links as a review checklist
Work through each item for the exact version you are considering:
- Package identity: Is the package name and version the one your project requested, rather than a similarly named package?
- Publisher: Is the publishing identity authorized by the project or organization you intended to trust?
- Repository: Does the linked repository belong to the expected project, and is it still accessible?
- Source commit: Does the attested commit contain the release changes you expect?
- Build workflow: Is the workflow run part of the project’s normal release process, with no unexplained change in build environment?
- Build file: Do the instructions explain the artifact’s creation and avoid unexpected download, generation or publish steps?
- Transparency log: Is there a public log record corresponding to the attestation you reviewed?
These checks connect the artifact to a chain of records. They do not remove the need to read code or evaluate the package’s permissions and runtime behavior.
Do not confuse provenance with npm audit
| Check | Primary question | Evidence inspected | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
npm audit signatures |
Were the downloaded packages’ registry signatures and available provenance attestations verified? | Signatures, provenance attestations and, when requested, attestation and transparency-log data. | That the code is safe, non-malicious or free of known vulnerabilities. |
npm audit |
Does the project’s dependency tree match known vulnerability advisories? | Known vulnerability information for dependencies in the tree. | Where a package was built or whether its publisher and source are authentic. |
| npmjs.com provenance details | Can a human connect this release to an expected source and build process? | Build environment, workflow run, source commit, build file and transparency-log entry. | That the linked source or build process is trustworthy simply because it is linked. |
Run both audits when the tooling and registry support them. A clean vulnerability report is not provenance evidence, and successful provenance verification is not a vulnerability-free certificate. They cover different failure modes.

A practical approval procedure for a new dependency
1. Define the exact release
Record the package name, version and registry from which it will be installed. Avoid reviewing one version’s provenance and then approving a different version without repeating the review.
2. Review provenance before production use
Open the package’s provenance panel and inspect the repository, commit, workflow, build file, publisher and transparency log. Resolve warnings or mismatches while the change is still in review.
3. Verify the installed tree
In the review checkout, run npm ci or the intentional npm install, followed by npm audit signatures. If the command fails, preserve the full output and investigate the registry and package support instead of overriding the result.
4. Capture machine-readable evidence
When your change-control process needs an artifact, run the JSON form with --include-attestations. Keep it with the dependency update so reviewers can see what was verified at that point in time.
5. Perform the separate vulnerability check
Run npm audit and handle any advisories according to your project’s risk policy. Do not close a vulnerability finding merely because provenance verification passed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →6. Decide whether the remaining trust is acceptable
Approve only when the publisher, source and build process fit your project’s trust model and the unresolved limitations are understood. Provenance supplies evidence for that decision; it does not make the decision for you.

Troubleshooting common verification problems
The command is unavailable or behaves as if provenance is unsupported
Check npm --version. Upgrade to npm CLI 9.5.0 or newer for the combined workflow, then repeat the installation and audit. Using an older CLI may provide signature verification without the provenance support you need.
The package has no provenance panel
Confirm that you are viewing the exact release and the registry page for the package you intend to install. If provenance is still absent, ask whether the maintainer uses a supported publishing arrangement. npm provenance is not emitted by every possible publishing setup, so absence is a limitation to document rather than automatic evidence of compromise.
The audit reports missing signatures
Read the complete error and identify the registry that supplied the package. npm’s documentation says that, where a registry supports signatures, the CLI errors when packages lack them. A private mirror or another registry may have different support; determine that context before deciding whether the package can be accepted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe provenance page warns about a deleted or private repository
Do not ignore the warning. A deleted or private repository prevents npm from establishing the expected link. Request an explanation from the maintainer, compare the release with any independently documented source, and record the unresolved limitation if your policy allows an exception.
The JSON output is difficult to review
Use the human-readable command first to understand the high-level result, then collect npm audit signatures --json --include-attestations for detailed review. The JSON can contain the bundles and transparency-log material needed to inspect a disputed result or automate evidence retention.
What provenance cannot protect you from
- Malicious source code: An attacker or an intentionally harmful maintainer can publish code through a legitimate, correctly attested workflow.
- A compromised build process: Provenance can show which workflow produced an artifact; it does not by itself prove that every workflow step was safe.
- Vulnerabilities: Known flaws are the subject of
npm auditand related security review, not of provenance verification. - Unsafe transitive behavior: A direct dependency may bring other packages into the tree. Review the complete installed tree and run the vulnerability audit.
- Runtime risk: Provenance does not assess what the package does with credentials, files, network access or application data after installation.
npm’s own guidance is to audit the linked source and build instructions and decide whether to trust them. Provenance narrows uncertainty about origin; it does not replace code review, vulnerability management or least-privilege runtime controls.
Final pre-installation checklist
- Have you selected the exact package version and registry?
- Does npmjs.com show provenance details and a green check for that version?
- Do the repository, source commit, workflow run and build file match the project you expected?
- Is the publisher authorized within your organization’s trust model?
- Are you using npm CLI 9.5.0 or newer?
- Did you install the intended dependency tree with
npm cior a deliberatenpm install? - Did
npm audit signaturesverify the available signatures and attestations? - Did you run
npm auditseparately for known vulnerabilities? - Have you recorded warnings, missing provenance or registry limitations instead of treating them as a pass?
If any answer is no, the package is not yet fully verified. Resolve the gap or document an explicit, reviewed exception before allowing the dependency into a production build.
