The most reliable authenticity check happens before you pay: buy from the brand’s own store or a retailer the brand confirms as authorized in your country. For an online listing, identify the actual seller, compare the offer with the brand’s current product information, and treat an implausibly low price, unusual packaging or an incomplete product story as a reason to stop. These steps lower your risk but do not certify an item on their own. When evidence remains unclear, ask the brand before buying or choose another seller.
Why the seller is your strongest first check
Visible details can be copied. A counterfeit can use a convincing logo, box and batch-like code, so the person or business supplying the item is the most useful starting point.
The FBI lists sales through non-authorized retailers as a warning sign for counterfeit cosmetics and fragrances. CHANEL gives brand-specific advice that is even more direct: “There is one way to ensure that articles are genuine: purchase them only in CHANEL boutiques or from retailers authorized by CHANEL.” That statement applies to CHANEL, not automatically to every luxury brand, but it illustrates the safest purchasing route.

Use the brand’s official website for your market, not a search-result snippet or a seller’s own claim. Look for a store locator, “where to buy” page or authorized-retailer list. If the site does not publish a list, contact its customer-service channel and ask whether the specific retailer and country are authorized.

Authorization is market-specific
A retailer authorized in one country may not be authorized to sell into another. Check the legal business name, country and physical or online storefront you intend to use. Do not treat a marketplace’s familiar name, a “fulfilled by” label or a storefront title that resembles the brand as proof of authorization.
Separate the platform from the seller
On a marketplace, open the exact listing and record:
- the seller’s displayed name and location;
- who invoices the sale;
- who ships or fulfills it;
- the return window and return address; and
- whether the listing is sold by the brand, an authorized retailer or an unrelated third party.
A reputable platform can host listings from many businesses. The platform’s reputation does not establish that every individual listing is genuine.

A before-checkout verification sequence
Run these checks in order. Stop when a seller cannot answer a basic question or when the evidence conflicts.
- Open the brand site independently. Type the brand’s address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Find the local store locator, authorized-retailer list or customer-service contact. For CHANEL’s United States guidance, the official route is its boutiques and authorized retailers: CHANEL anti-counterfeit guidance.
- Confirm the exact seller. Match the retailer’s legal or trading name, domain, country and physical address with the brand’s information. If the brand confirms authorization only by region, ask whether it covers online sales to your delivery address.
- Capture the listing details. Save the product name, shade or concentration, size, seller, price, images and promised delivery date. Marketplace pages can change after purchase, so keeping a screenshot or order record helps if you need to challenge the transaction.
- Compare the offer with current official information. Check the product name, volume, shade names, bottle or compact design, included accessories and packaging images on the brand’s current page. Health Canada specifically recommends comparing online product images with the brand’s official website: Health Canada’s online cosmetics guidance.
- Test the price for plausibility. Compare the price with the brand and several authorized retailers in the same market. An unusually low price is a warning sign identified by the FBI, but a discount alone does not prove counterfeiting. Ask what explains the reduction—an official clearance, a smaller size, a tester, an open-box item or a different market—before relying on it.
- Question unusual product stories. Be cautious about an implausible “limited edition,” a color or scent the brand does not show, stock photos paired with vague descriptions, or pressure to pay immediately. Ask the seller where the stock came from and whether the item is factory sealed. A seller who will not provide basic sourcing or condition information is not offering enough evidence to proceed.
- Check the transaction protections. Confirm that the seller gives a readable receipt, states the return terms and accepts a payment method with a dispute process. These protections do not authenticate a product, but they reduce the consequences if the item is materially different from the listing.
How to read online photos and descriptions
Use official product information as a comparison reference, not as a visual “pass” test. Examine the actual offer at full resolution when possible.
Compare identity and size
- Exact product name, line and edition.
- Net contents in the units used in your market.
- Shade, color or fragrance concentration.
- Included components, such as a cap, applicator, pouch or refill.
- Language, importer or distributor information required for the destination country.
Compare the presentation
The FBI identifies differences in packaging color or lettering as potential counterfeit indicators. Look for inconsistent typefaces, misspellings, uneven printing, altered logos, unusual spacing, poor wrapping or a box design that does not appear in the brand’s current materials. Health Canada’s image-comparison advice is useful here, but packaging can change during a legitimate redesign, so a mismatch is a reason to investigate—not proof by itself.

Look for a coherent listing
A trustworthy listing normally explains what is being sold, its condition, size and return terms. Treat these combinations as high risk:
- professional brand photographs with no photograph of the item or packaging actually offered;
- a sealed-product claim alongside visible wear, a missing cap or an unwrapped applicator;
- different sizes or shades described under one generic title;
- an “exclusive” edition with no corresponding information on the brand’s site; or
- stock that appears to be shipping from a country unrelated to the seller’s stated business without a clear explanation.
Price is a warning signal, not an authenticity formula
Counterfeit sellers often use a price far below normal retail to attract attention. The FBI and CHANEL both caution consumers about unusually low prices. Legitimate discounts also exist, however: authorized clearance, seasonal promotions, loyalty offers, smaller sizes and regional pricing can all change the amount.

Never calculate a supposed authenticity threshold from price alone. A genuine product can be discounted, and a counterfeit can be priced close to retail.

If you already have the product
Inspection can identify reasons to reject an item, but it cannot guarantee authenticity. Do not deliberately apply a suspicious cosmetic or spray an uncertain fragrance on your skin to “test” it.
- Preserve evidence first. Photograph the shipping carton, seals, outer box, labels, bottle or compact, batch markings and receipt before opening further. Keep messages with the seller.
- Compare the complete package. Use the brand’s current official images and product information. Check lettering, color, wrapping, alignment, cap fit and the relationship between the box and the item. The FBI lists packaging differences as possible counterfeit indicators.
- Assess the contents without using them. An unexpected texture or consistency in makeup, or an off scent or different fluid color in fragrance, is a warning sign noted by the FBI. A legitimate product can vary slightly because of reformulation, age or storage, so treat an unexpected result as a reason to stop rather than as a laboratory conclusion.
- Check condition against the listing. Look for a broken seal, leakage, dried product, residue around a pump, missing protective insert or signs of prior opening. A used or decanted item should not be represented as factory sealed.
- Contact the brand if it offers a review channel. Send the product name, seller, purchase record, market and clear photographs. Ask what information the brand needs and whether it can comment on the item. Do not assume every brand can authenticate every product remotely or verify every batch code.
- Use the seller’s remedy while preserving the item. If the product is suspicious, stop using it, request a return or refund under the stated terms, and use the payment provider’s dispute process if the seller does not resolve the issue. Follow local instructions for suspected counterfeit goods rather than reselling the item.
Why second-hand luxury beauty needs a higher bar
Health Canada warns that determining whether second-hand cosmetics are counterfeit can be challenging. Resale listings often have incomplete provenance, opened packaging, storage histories that cannot be checked and no reliable chain from the brand to the current owner.

Before considering a resale item, require a clear seller identity, original purchase evidence where available, intact seals, photographs of the exact item and usable return terms. If any of those are missing—or if you cannot accept that authenticity may remain uncertain—the safest decision is not to buy. Never rely on a seller’s statement that an item was “a gift” or “bought from a department store” without supporting details.

Labels, batch codes and the limits of visual checks
A complete label is not an authenticity certificate
For United States cosmetics, the FDA Cosmetics Labeling Guide describes required information and presentation. A label that appears complete can still be copied onto counterfeit contents, and an unusual label may reflect a different market or a packaging update. Label compliance and product authenticity are separate questions.
“FDA approved” is not a general luxury-cosmetic credential
The FDA explains that most cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients do not need premarket approval, apart from exceptions such as color additives. Cosmetics sold in the United States must still comply with applicable law. Its explanation, FDA Authority Over Cosmetics, means two common claims are both misleading: “FDA approved” does not prove a luxury cosmetic is genuine, and the absence of premarket approval does not prove it is fake.
Batch codes and gadgets have limited evidentiary value
A batch code may help a brand investigate a product, so photograph it accurately and provide it when you contact customer service. The available official guidance does not establish that a third-party batch-code website can certify authenticity. Nor does it establish a UV light, magnifier or other consumer gadget as a reliable luxury-cosmetics authentication device. Treat such tools as supplemental observations at most, never as a substitute for seller verification and brand confirmation.

Country, regulation and consumer-protection differences
The FBI guidance is United States-focused, Health Canada’s advice is for Canadian consumers, and the CHANEL page cited above is a United States brand page. The seller-first method is broadly useful, but authorized-retailer lists, labeling rules, import requirements, return rights and marketplace protections differ by brand and country.
Use the brand’s official site for the country where you will buy and receive the product. If an item crosses borders, check who is responsible for duties, returns and regulatory compliance. Do not use a retailer list from another region as evidence that your intended transaction is authorized.
A printable decision checklist
- Have I identified the actual seller, not just the platform?
- Does the brand confirm that seller for my country and purchase channel?
- Do the product name, size, shade or concentration and accessories match current official information?
- Can the seller explain the price, product condition and source without pressure or evasiveness?
- Do the listing photos show the exact item, and do packaging details look coherent?
- Are the receipt, return address and payment protections clear?
- If this is second-hand, is provenance strong enough for me to accept residual uncertainty?
- If I already have it, have I kept evidence and avoided applying or spraying a suspicious product?
- Have I asked the brand before buying when any material question remains unanswered?
The FBI’s concise consumer rule is worth following: “If you’re not sure about the authenticity of a product, don’t buy it.” Seller verification and brand confirmation are more dependable than a copied label, a low price, a code-checking website or a visual gadget.
