Verify an embassy contact through an independently opened government directory, then compare the complete phone number, email address, domain and office details on the mission’s own page. Do not rely on a number, link, search result, advertisement or social-media account supplied by an unsolicited message. If the details do not match, stop and contact the mission through the independently found official channel before sharing anything.
The checks below use U.S. government guidance as the documented example. A .gov address and the usembassy.gov directory apply to U.S. government services; they are not a universal rule for every country. For another country, start with that government’s foreign ministry or official embassy directory.
Why independent verification matters
Embassy impersonation scams can look convincing. A message may copy a flag, seal, staff title, letterhead or polished website while directing you to an unofficial address. The U.S. Department of State warns that fraudulent sites can imitate official appearance and may lack the .gov suffix. Visual quality is therefore only presentation, not proof of identity.
The risk is highest when a contact asks for passport details, identity numbers, travel documents, account credentials, payment or other personal information. The Department of State’s scams guidance states: “Do not share personal details over the phone or online – even in your social media.” Treat that as a pause rule: verify the channel first, and only then decide what information the service genuinely requires.

Independent verification means you obtain the contact details from a source you reached yourself. You do not validate a message by clicking the message’s own link and comparing the page it opens. Instead, type a known government address, use an official directory, or navigate from a government homepage, then follow the directory’s link to the mission.
First identify which embassy or consulate you need
Your country’s mission abroad
If you are travelling and need help from your own government, identify the embassy or consulate serving your destination. Different posts can have different phone numbers, office hours and emergency instructions. A contact for one city may not handle another city or region.
A foreign mission in your country
If you are applying for a visa or another service from a foreign government located in your country, you need that government’s mission directory, not a directory for your own embassies abroad. The U.S. government’s Find a U.S. embassy page provides routes for U.S. missions abroad and for finding foreign embassies in the United States. Other countries should be checked through their own foreign ministry or official government directory.

Check the jurisdiction before contacting anyone
Write down the destination country, city, service and, if relevant, the consular district. Use those facts when selecting a post from the directory. A message that names a real embassy can still be intended for the wrong location, so the city and service must match the official mission page.
Step-by-step verification workflow
- Stop the unsolicited conversation. Do not reply with personal details while you investigate. Avoid clicking links or opening attachments in the message being checked. Preserve the message, sender address and phone number so you can compare them later.
- Open an official directory yourself. For a U.S. mission, begin at USAGov’s embassy finder or the Department of State’s usembassy.gov directory. For another government, start at its foreign ministry or official government portal. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you created from a trusted government page.
- Follow the directory’s mission link. Select the country and post from the directory, rather than searching for a similar-looking site. The directory route is important because a search result, sponsored listing or social-media profile can lead to an impersonator.
- Read the complete contact details. Compare the mission page’s full email address, telephone number, physical address, office name, service description and any emergency instructions with the details in the message. Check every character of the domain and the part after the
@; a display name or logo can be copied. - Apply the issuing government’s domain convention. For U.S. government sites, the Department of State says the
.govtop-level domain identifies official government websites and that official U.S. government email addresses end in.gov. Its fraud guidance says visa-related correspondence from other domains should be treated as suspect. This test is specific to U.S. government services; do not assume that every foreign embassy must use.gov. - Evaluate what the contact is asking you to do. An unexpected demand for money or personal information is a reason to stop. The Department of State warns about impersonators seeking money or personal information through websites, emails and letters, and cautions visa applicants about unofficial companies. A request can mention a genuine case number or office and still be fraudulent.
- Confirm through an independently listed channel. Use the phone number or inquiry route shown on the official mission page, not the number in the suspicious message. Explain that you are checking whether a contact is genuine. If the official page provides more than one channel, use a second independently listed route when the first contact cannot clarify the discrepancy.
- Share only after the channel is confirmed. Once the mission confirms the contact and the service you need, use the official instructions and provide only the information required for that service. Keep a copy of what you sent and the page where you found the instructions.
Questions to answer before sharing information
Use the mission page to answer these questions in order. If any answer is missing or conflicts with the message, pause instead of guessing.
- Which government operates the office? A U.S. embassy, a foreign embassy in the United States and a consulate may use different directories and procedures.
- Which post has jurisdiction? Confirm the country, city or consular district and make sure the service named in the message appears on that post’s page.
- Where did the contact originate? Record whether you found it through an official directory or whether an unsolicited sender supplied it. Only the first route is an independent starting point.
- Do all details match? Compare the full URL, domain, email address, telephone number, physical address, office name and service description. Do not stop after matching a logo or the first words of a domain.
- What information is actually required? The verified office should provide the procedure for the service. Do not volunteer extra identity, account or travel information merely because a message requests it.
- Can the office confirm the request? Call or use the inquiry route published on the independently opened page. Ask whether the sender, address and requested action belong to that office.
How to compare common contact channels
The following comparison helps you decide how much confidence to place in a channel. It does not establish a universal email, payment or phone convention for every country.

U.S.-specific checks you can make
Understand what .gov proves
The Department of State’s Fraud Warning says, “Internet sites ending in the ‘.gov’ top-level domain suffix are official government websites.” It also says official U.S. government email addresses end in .gov. Use this as a strong U.S.-specific identity check, while still comparing the exact address with the mission page.

A .gov address does not tell you that every request in a message is appropriate for your case. Confirm the office, service and reason for contact. Conversely, a polished site without the expected U.S. government domain should not be treated as an embassy site merely because it displays official-looking imagery.
Visa-related messages
Visa applicants are frequent targets for unofficial companies and look-alike websites. If a visa message comes from a non-.gov domain, the Department of State advises treating it as suspect. Do not upload passport scans, pay an invoice or provide account information until the official mission page confirms both the channel and the required procedure.
Claims that a U.S. citizen is in trouble abroad
A message may claim that a relative or another U.S. citizen has been arrested, hospitalized or otherwise needs immediate money. The Department of State says Overseas Citizens Services can help check whether a purported U.S. citizen emergency is real or a scam. Reach that service through a current contact route obtained independently from an official government page, not solely through the message making the claim.
For a genuine emergency, use the current contact information published for the relevant post or service. Numbers and procedures can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot, forwarded list or saved number without checking the live official page.

The domain is almost, but not exactly, right
Look for substitutions, extra words, altered country endings, unusual punctuation and misspellings. Compare the entire domain, not just the recognizable portion. A sender name can be edited independently of the actual address.

The phone number differs
Do not choose the more urgent or convenient number. Return to the independently opened mission page and use the number published there. Ask the office whether the other number belongs to it. If the page lists an emergency route separately from routine inquiries, use the route that matches your situation.
The page has no contact details or appears unavailable
Do not fill the gap with a number from a search snippet or social post. Try the official government directory again, check the relevant foreign ministry page, or use another independently listed inquiry route. Current contact information for a post can change, so verify it on the live official page each time you need it.
The sender creates pressure
Urgency is not independent evidence. Pause when a message demands immediate payment, threatens cancellation, asks you to keep the matter secret or insists that you use only its link or phone number. The Department of State’s Scams guidance specifically warns against sharing personal details by phone or online. End the exchange until the official channel confirms the request.
When verification remains inconclusive
Do not treat an unanswered call, a broken page or a plausible explanation from the sender as confirmation. Keep the original message, note the discrepancy and try another route listed on the official mission page or foreign-ministry directory. If the post has separate routine and emergency contacts, select the one that matches your circumstances. If no independently listed route can confirm the request, withhold personal information and payment until one can.
A directory can establish where the government publishes its contact details; it cannot by itself prove that every individual message is legitimate. You still need to compare the specific sender, request, office and service. Likewise, an official-looking domain does not make an unexpected demand appropriate. Verification is complete only when the mission’s independently published information and the request align.
Prepare before travel
Verification is easier before an emergency. Save the nearest embassy or consulate’s contact details from its official page, including the page URL and the relevant emergency instructions. Recheck the live page before departure and when circumstances change rather than assuming an old contact card is current.

U.S. travelers can also enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). The program provides email alerts from the embassy or consulate and helps the post contact the traveler or an emergency contact during an emergency. STEP is a preparation and communication aid; it does not replace independently checking a suspicious message.
Keep the verified details accessible offline as well as online, but label the date you saved them. When you use them later, compare them with the current official page because a post can change numbers, addresses, hours or procedures.
If you already shared information
Stop the conversation and do not send additional documents, passwords or payments. Record the message, sender address, phone number, links and information you disclosed. Return to the independently located government directory and tell the relevant mission or official service what happened, using the contact route published there.
If the message involved a claimed U.S. citizen emergency, contact Overseas Citizens Services through an independently obtained official route so staff can assess whether the claim is genuine. If it involved a visa or another country’s mission, contact that mission through its verified page and explain that the original channel did not match the official details.

Not by itself. An impersonator may use genuine-looking case details. Compare the number with the mission page reached independently, then ask the office through that published channel whether the call or message is genuine.

Treat the mismatch as unresolved. Do not reply to the message. Contact the mission through the email, phone number or inquiry form published on the independently opened official page and ask it to confirm the address.
Should I save embassy contact details before a trip?
Yes. Save the current mission page, phone number and emergency instructions, and check them again before departure. U.S. travelers may also enroll in STEP for embassy alerts and emergency-contact facilitation.
