Before sharing a political ad, identify who made and paid for it, isolate the exact factual claim, trace that claim to primary evidence, check dates and definitions, and look for an independent fact-check. A sponsor disclaimer can tell you who funded an ad, but it does not prove that the ad is accurate. If important evidence is missing or disputed, pause and describe the uncertainty instead of repeating the claim as settled fact.
A seven-step check you can complete before sharing
Political ads combine verifiable statements with persuasion. Numbers, vote claims, quotations, descriptions of events and statements about what a law does can be checked against records. Slogans, predictions, opinions and value judgments require a different kind of discussion and should not be presented as if a document can prove them true or false.
1. Find the original ad
Start with the earliest or most authoritative version you can locate, rather than a screenshot or repost. Save the link or file and record:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- the candidate, party, committee or organization named in the ad;
- the platform and account where you found it;
- the date you saw it and, if available, the date it was published;
- the “paid for by” or authorization statement; and
- any caption, transcript, disclaimer or linked source that accompanied it.
A repost may crop the disclaimer, remove a caption or change the surrounding context. The Electoral Commission advises checking where campaign material originated, not simply who forwarded it. Keep the original wording, audio and visuals available while you investigate.

2. Write down one checkable claim
Transcribe the relevant sentence or audio exactly. If the ad makes several assertions, separate them. For example, “The legislature voted for measure X,” “unemployment rose by 3 percent,” and “the opponent supports policy Y” are three different checks. Do not fact-check a paraphrase that is stronger or weaker than what the ad actually said.
Mark statements that are factual and testable. A date, vote, quotation, expenditure, population figure or description of a law can usually be compared with a record. “The only candidate who cares” is a slogan. “This plan will make everyone safer” is a prediction or value claim unless the ad supplies a measurable definition and evidence.
3. Trace the claim to primary evidence
Follow every citation, footnote, report title and named dataset back to the organization that created the underlying record. Depending on the claim, that may be a legislative journal, court document, election filing, official statistical release, budget document or full speech transcript. FactCheck.org describes its method as relying on primary sources and nonpartisan government agencies for expertise and analysis.
Read the original record, not only a quotation of it. Check whether the cited document covers the same place, time period, population and definition as the ad. A link to a real report does not establish that the report supports the ad’s interpretation.
4. Check dates, definitions and omitted context
For a statistic, record the period measured, geographic area, population, unit, denominator, baseline and whether the number is preliminary or revised. Ask whether the ad compares equivalent measures. A percentage change, percentage-point change and raw count can describe the same event very differently.
For a quotation, locate the complete statement and the question or event that prompted it. For a vote, check the bill version, amendment, procedural vote and final outcome. For a policy claim, read the operative text and note implementation dates, exceptions and funding assumptions.
UK official guidance on campaign statistics emphasizes clear definitions, access to the underlying data, acknowledgment of uncertainty and interpretive context. Those are useful checks anywhere, even though the guidance itself is jurisdiction-specific.
5. Search for an independent fact-check
Search the most distinctive phrase in quotation marks together with the candidate, group or policy name. Also try common spelling variations and the date of the ad. Read the fact-check’s explanation and source links, not only a label such as “false” or “misleading.” Confirm that it examined the same wording and version of the ad.

An established fact-check can save time by assembling documents and explaining context, but it is a starting point for your review. Inspect its methodology, publication date and cited evidence. A fact-check of an older ad may not address a later revision or newly released data.
6. Compare what the evidence actually establishes
Use precise conclusions. “False,” “unsupported,” “missing context,” “outdated” and “not verifiable from available evidence” are not interchangeable. If two credible sources conflict, compare their measurement periods, definitions, methods and underlying records before choosing a conclusion.
A technically accurate figure can still be presented misleadingly when the ad omits a relevant comparison or uses a selective baseline. Explain the omitted context specifically rather than declaring the entire subject false.
7. Decide what, if anything, to share
Share only after the evidence supports the wording you plan to repeat. If the claim is uncertain, do not recirculate it as settled fact. You can share a correction that links to the primary record and states exactly what that record does and does not show. If you cannot find enough evidence, say that the claim remains unverified and stop there.
Match the source to the question
| Verification route | Best for | Checks to perform |
|---|---|---|
| Original government, court, legislative or statistical record | Dates, votes, official figures, rules and documented events | Confirm the exact period, definitions, version and whether the record supports the ad’s wording. |
| Subject-matter expert or nonpartisan public analysis | Technical, economic, health and policy claims | Review expertise, methods, assumptions, uncertainty and underlying data. |
| Established fact-checking organization | Prominent claims already discussed publicly | Read the exact claim checked, source links, context and disclosed methodology. |
| Election authority or platform policy page | Voting-process claims, sponsor disclosures and platform-rule questions | Check jurisdiction, platform, ad format, date and the authority’s scope. |
These routes answer different questions. A platform policy can tell you whether a disclosure is required. An official record can show what a public body recorded. A fact-check can synthesize several sources. None proves more than its evidence supports.
How to check common types of political-ad claims
Statistics and charts
Recreate the ad’s comparison in your notes. Write down the numerator, denominator, unit, start date and end date. Determine whether the series is seasonally adjusted, estimated, revised or based on a survey. Look for a missing baseline: “up 50 percent” could mean an increase from two cases to three, while “up 5 percentage points” describes a different change entirely.
Check whether the ad selected a favorable month, region or subgroup. Compare like with like and preserve the source’s uncertainty range when one is supplied. If the original publisher warns that an estimate is preliminary, carry that qualification into anything you share.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVotes, bills and government actions
Identify the exact bill, resolution or administrative action. A vote to advance a bill is not necessarily a vote for its final text. Check the roll-call record, amendments, final passage and whether the measure became law. A legislator’s absence, abstention or procedural vote can be misrepresented when the ad shows only a single headline.

Use the official legislative or court record where possible. If the ad says an official “blocked” or “approved” something, define the action: introduced, scheduled, voted down, signed, vetoed, enjoined or implemented are different events.
Quotations and edited audio or video
Find a transcript, recording or full video from the original event. Compare the exact words, not a cleaned-up paraphrase. Listen for a sentence removed from a qualification, a question that changes the meaning or a splice between separate moments.
If an image, voice or video looks realistic but unusual, verify the earliest available media and check the platform’s current disclosure policy for synthetic or digitally altered content. A label or policy violation does not by itself prove that a separate policy or numerical claim is false.

Separate what a proposal says it would do from what an ad predicts will happen. Read the proposal’s text, funding assumptions, eligibility rules and effective date. Forecasts depend on models and assumptions; compare those assumptions rather than treating a model output as an observed fact.
If an ad claims a plan “costs” a particular amount, determine whether that is a budgeted appropriation, a multi-year estimate, a gross cost, a net cost after offsets or an opponent’s projection. Label the source and uncertainty when you share it.
What sponsorship and platform labels do—and do not—tell you
Keep three questions separate: who made or paid for the ad, whether it follows disclosure or platform rules, and whether its factual statements are accurate.
The U.S. Federal Election Commission describes payer and authorization disclaimers for covered communications, with requirements that vary by medium. Those disclosures identify the payor or authorization status; they do not certify truth. The FEC page reviewed for this guide says it does not reflect a June 30, 2026 Supreme Court decision and will be revised after the Commission regains a quorum, so verify the current legal position before relying on it for present U.S. compliance advice.

Use a “paid for by” line as a lead for further research. Do not treat the presence, design or absence of a platform label as a shortcut for deciding whether the ad is true. Labels can be cropped or omitted in a repost, and a compliant disclosure can accompany an inaccurate statement.
How jurisdiction changes the legal question
Election law is local. A regulator’s role in one country cannot be generalized to all campaigns or platforms.
In the United Kingdom, the Electoral Commission says: “We do not regulate the content of campaign material, and we do not have powers to verify or correct the information included in campaign material.” It describes a specific legal restriction and police route for false statements of fact about a candidate’s personal character or conduct; it also notes that false policy statements are not covered by that law.

It also distinguishes election advertising from other political-issue advertising and describes separate remits for the Advertising Standards Authority and Ofcom.
In another country, check the applicable election authority, advertising regulator, police or court route and the date of the rule. Do not assume that an inaccurate campaign statement is illegal, or that an election authority verifies every campaign claim. If you need to report a suspected violation, preserve the original ad, sponsor information, date and evidence, then use the authority’s current complaint instructions.
A note-taking template that prevents accidental distortion
Use a short record while investigating. It keeps the ad’s wording visible and makes your eventual correction more precise.
Original wording: Speaker or sponsor: Platform and date found: Exact claim to check: Primary record: What the record measures or says: Relevant date, definition and baseline: Missing context or uncertainty: Independent fact-checks: Conclusion: false / unsupported / missing context / outdated / not verifiable What I can safely share:
Do not fill the conclusion until you have checked the underlying record. If a source does not answer a field, leave the uncertainty explicit rather than guessing.

Imagine an ad says, “Candidate A doubled taxes on working families last year,” while displaying a chart. The following process does not decide which candidate to support; it tests the claim.

- Locate the original video and transcribe the sentence. Record the sponsor and date.
- Define “taxes,” “working families,” “doubled” and “last year.” The phrase could refer to a specific tax, total household liability or a projected effect.
- Find the enacted law, budget document or official tax data for the stated period. Check whether the measure applied to the relevant population and whether it was in force for the whole year.
- Compare the ad’s baseline with the source’s baseline. A chart may compare a partial year with a full year or a gross payment with a net payment after credits.
- Search the exact wording with the candidate and sponsor names. Read any fact-check and inspect its documents.
- Choose the narrowest supported conclusion. If the official record shows one tax rate increased but not household taxes overall, describe the claim as missing context rather than repeating “taxes doubled.”
The example illustrates why the exact wording, definitions and baseline matter. It does not assert anything about a real candidate or tax policy.
Common mistakes that make verification fail
Checking the messenger instead of the message
A familiar candidate, account or news outlet can still publish a selective claim. Evaluate the evidence for the specific statement.
Accepting a real citation without reading it
An ad can cite an authentic report while changing its population, period or conclusion. Open the primary document and compare the wording.
Confusing “not proven” with “false”
Missing evidence may justify “unsupported” or “not verifiable,” not a definitive false rating. State what you checked and what remains unknown.
Ignoring updates
Statistics are revised, bills change and platform policies move. Record publication dates and check whether a newer version supersedes the source you found.
Treating legal compliance as truth
A required disclaimer answers a sponsorship question. It does not validate the ad’s numbers, quotations or predictions.
Sharing a correction that repeats the claim without context
Quote only as much as needed, link or identify the primary record, and put the accurate explanation next to the claim. Otherwise the correction can amplify the original message.

When two credible sources disagree
First check whether they are measuring the same thing. Differences often come from a changed time period, population, geographic scope, definition, revision status or model assumption. Then inspect each source’s underlying data and methods.
If the disagreement cannot be resolved, report it as a disagreement and identify the reason if known. Do not select the source that supports your preferred conclusion merely because it is official or familiar. Explain which parts are established and which remain contested.
Quick Recap
A final pre-share checklist
- I found the original ad, not only a repost.
- I preserved the exact wording, audio or visual claim.
- I identified the sponsor and recorded the date and platform.
- I separated factual assertions from opinions, slogans and predictions.
- I checked a primary record and matched its dates, definitions, population and baseline.
- I looked for omitted context, uncertainty, revisions and changed versions.
- I read any independent fact-check’s explanation and citations.
- I distinguished sponsorship or platform compliance from factual accuracy.
- I used a conclusion no stronger than the evidence supports.
- If the claim remains uncertain, I paused instead of sharing it as fact.
