To verify that Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem is patched, record the exact release running on the server, then compare it with both Cisco security advisories dated October 7, 2026. For the October hardening advisory, Cisco identifies 10-202609 as the first fixed 10-series release. A separate vulnerabilities advisory identifies 10-202608 as its first fixed release. Therefore, 10-202608 can satisfy the separate vulnerabilities table but does not satisfy the October hardening advisory. Releases 9-202601 and earlier must migrate to a fixed release under both advisories.

A connected router, switch, or other Cisco product’s version and licensing output does not prove the SSM On-Prem server’s patch level. Your evidence should show the server release, the advisory threshold checked, and whether the upgrade and post-upgrade synchronization completed.

What “patched” means for Cisco License On-Prem

Cisco now calls the product Cisco License On-Prem; older documentation and deployments may call it Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem or SSM On-Prem. The names refer to the same on-premises licensing server product for the purpose of this verification.

“Patched” is not a general statement that the appliance is current. It is a documented comparison between the exact server release you observed and the fixed-release table in each applicable Cisco advisory. Cisco published two relevant advisories on October 7, 2026, and their thresholds are not identical.

The October hardening advisory reports a highest-impact vulnerability grouping with a Cisco CVSS base score of 10.0 and says there is no workaround that addresses the vulnerabilities. Cisco’s recommendation is to upgrade to the fixed software identified in that advisory. The separate October vulnerabilities advisory carries a Cisco CVSS base score of 9.1.

Fixed-release thresholds to check

Use the advisory-specific result rather than a single blanket “latest” label. The following table captures Cisco’s October 7, 2026 guidance.

Advisory Affected release range stated by Cisco First fixed 10-series release Version 9 direction
Cisco License (Smart Software Manager) On-Prem Security Hardening Release: October 2026 10-202608 and earlier 10-202609 9-202601 and earlier must migrate to a fixed release
Cisco License (Smart Software Manager) On-Prem Vulnerabilities Earlier than 10-202608 10-202608 9-202601 and earlier must migrate to a fixed release

Release 10-202609 is listed as not vulnerable in both October advisories. The practical consequence is important: a server on 10-202608 meets the first-fixed value in the separate vulnerabilities advisory, but it is still within the affected range in the hardening advisory. Do not report 10-202608 as fully patched against the October 2026 hardening guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you check the release

Prepare the records and access needed to make the result auditable:

  • Access to the authorized administration interface for the Cisco License On-Prem or SSM On-Prem server.
  • Upgrade records, change tickets, or installation records that identify the server release.
  • The two October 7, 2026 Cisco advisories and their fixed-release tables.
  • The release package and its corresponding signature file if an upgrade is required.
  • For a virtual-machine deployment, a current database backup before changing the software.

Cisco’s reviewed upgrade article does not document a universal command or an exact GUI path for displaying the SSM server release. Do not invent one from a different Cisco product. If the authorized interface and your records do not establish the server release, stop the verification and ask Cisco Support for the supported method for your deployment.

Step 1: Identify the exact running server release

Use the server’s authorized administration evidence

Read the release from the administration interface or from an installation and upgrade record that unambiguously refers to the Cisco License On-Prem server. Record the complete string, including the major series and date-style suffix, such as 10-202608 or 10-202609. Keep the observation date, server identity, and the person or system that supplied the value.

An upgrade package name, a planned target, or a release shown in a purchase or entitlement record is not proof of what is running now. The value must describe the deployed server after the last completed change.

Do not substitute a connected device’s version

Commands such as show version and show license status describe a connected product instance and its licensing state. They can help troubleshoot that device, but they do not establish the installed Cisco License On-Prem server release. Keep the server-version check and the product-instance licensing check as separate records.

When the release cannot be confirmed

If administrators cannot obtain a reliable server release from the authorized interface or upgrade history, record the status as unverified, not patched. Contact Cisco Support, including the deployment type, available records, and the uncertainty. Do not infer the server version from a client’s output, a browser bookmark, or the release you expected an upgrade to install.

Step 2: Compare the release with both advisories

Perform two independent comparisons. First, apply the observed release to the hardening advisory. Then apply the same observed release to the separate vulnerabilities advisory. Keep the advisory title and publication date beside each result so a later reviewer can see which threshold was used.

How to classify common 10-series results

  • 10-202609: Cisco lists this release as not vulnerable in both October advisories.
  • 10-202608: This is the first fixed release in the separate vulnerabilities advisory, but the hardening advisory lists 10-202608 and earlier as affected. It does not pass the hardening check.
  • 10-202607 or an earlier 10-series release: It is below the first fixed release in the separate vulnerabilities advisory and also falls within the hardening advisory’s affected 10-series range.

How to classify version 9

For both October advisories, Cisco says releases 9-202601 and earlier must migrate to a fixed release. A version 9 deployment in that range should not be described as patched merely because it has a supplementary patch or because an upgrade process was attempted. Establish the final running release and confirm it is one Cisco identifies as fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the stricter applicable outcome

When the advisory results differ, report both results and use the more protective current direction for your operational decision. For the October 2026 pair, that means treating 10-202609 as the 10-series target for a result that clears the hardening advisory as well as the separate vulnerabilities advisory.

Reading the two advisories together

The two Cisco documents are not duplicate labels for one test. They are separate security statements with separate affected ranges and first-fixed values. The hardening advisory is the controlling check when your objective is to demonstrate compliance with Cisco’s October hardening direction; its 10-series threshold is 10-202609. The general vulnerabilities advisory is still relevant and should be recorded independently, but its 10-202608 threshold is not a substitute for the stricter hardening result.

Record the advisory names exactly enough that a reviewer can distinguish them, along with the October 7, 2026 date and the Cisco fixed-release value applied. Cisco’s CVSS base scores—10.0 for the highest-impact grouping in the hardening advisory and 9.1 in the separate vulnerabilities advisory—describe severity, not a license to skip verification. Cisco also states that no workaround addresses the hardening-advisory vulnerabilities, so a firewall rule, configuration change, or device-side licensing status should not be documented as an alternative to upgrading.

10-202609 Not vulnerable Not vulnerable Passes both listed October checks, subject to confirming the upgrade and synchronization completed.
10-202608 Affected First fixed release Do not call fully patched; upgrade to 10-202609 for the hardening result.
10-202607 or earlier 10-series Affected Affected Upgrade to a Cisco-fixed release.
9-202601 or earlier Migration required Migration required Move to a fixed release; an attempted upgrade is not evidence of completion.

Step 3: Document a defensible verification result

A patch-verification record should allow another administrator or auditor to reproduce your conclusion without guessing which Cisco table you used. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The server name or deployment identifier and whether it is physical or virtual.
  • The exact running release string observed.
  • The observation date and the authorized source of the value.
  • The title and date of each Cisco advisory checked.
  • The fixed-release threshold applied for each advisory.
  • The result for each advisory: passes, fails, or cannot be verified.
  • The upgrade change record, package identity, and signature-file record when an upgrade was performed.
  • The date and result of post-upgrade synchronization.
  • Any browser-cache clearing or support case used to resolve stale information.

Use precise language in reports. For example: “Server release 10-202609 was observed in the authorized administration interface on [date]. It was compared with Cisco’s October 7, 2026 Security Hardening Release and Cisco’s October 7, 2026 Vulnerabilities advisory; both list 10-202609 as not vulnerable. Post-upgrade synchronization completed on [date].” Replace the bracketed fields with your own records; do not leave placeholders in a completed report.

Step 4: Upgrade when the release does not meet the threshold

Cisco’s upgrade workflow has several required pieces. The exact command syntax and screen labels can vary by deployment, so follow the procedure for your installed release and do not substitute a command from a connected network device.

  1. Select the Cisco License On-Prem release upgrade. Confirm that the selected target is the fixed release required by the applicable advisory, not merely a release that was once planned or downloaded.
  2. Transfer the upgrade package and its corresponding signature file. Cisco states that an existing corresponding signature file is required. Treat the package and signature as a pair and retain their identifiers in the change record.
  3. Back up the database for a virtual-machine deployment. Cisco highly recommends this backup before upgrading a VM deployment. Verify that the backup is usable under your organization’s recovery procedure.
  4. Issue the upgrade through the supported administration workflow. Wait for the process to complete and preserve the resulting status or log evidence. Starting an upgrade is not proof that the target release became active.
  5. Synchronize the system after the upgrade. Cisco instructs administrators to synchronize the system after upgrading. Record when synchronization started and whether it completed successfully.
  6. Recheck the running server release. Use the authorized server-side source again and compare the observed value with both advisory tables. Do not reuse the target value from the change request as the observed value.
  7. Clear the browser cache if pages show old information. Cisco notes that stale browser pages can hide the latest changes after an upgrade. Clear the cache, sign in again, and repeat the verification rather than treating a stale page as a failed upgrade.

If the package, signature, upgrade status, or synchronization result is missing, the change record is incomplete. Keep the patch status as unverified until the server release and post-upgrade state can be established.

What an upgrade record proves—and what it does not

A ticket showing that an administrator selected 10-202609 proves intent, not that the server now runs 10-202609. A downloaded package proves availability, not installation. A successful installer message proves that the installer reported success, but Cisco’s workflow still calls for synchronization and a final release check. The strongest record links four separate facts: the package and matching signature were accepted, the upgrade completed, synchronization completed, and the server subsequently reported the target release from an authorized source.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If any one of those facts is absent, describe the state precisely. For example, “upgrade initiated” or “package transferred” is not equivalent to “patched.” This distinction prevents an auditor, incident responder, or later administrator from treating a planned change as a verified security state.

Step 5: Recheck guidance when the advisory date changes

The thresholds in this article are Cisco’s October 7, 2026 entries. Cisco can revise advisory tables or publish a newer fixed release. At each review or change event, open the current Cisco advisory pages, confirm the revision date, and repeat the comparison against the exact release observed on the server. Preserve the version of the advisory or a dated reference used for the decision so an older compliance record remains understandable.

Version 9-202504: a release-specific supplementary-patch rule

Cisco’s version 9 release notes contain a special instruction for 9-202504: applying the Supplementary Patch is required for every upgrade to, or fresh installation of, that release, regardless of whether the upgrade or installation appears to complete successfully. The same notes require a full synchronization of all SSM On-Prem accounts after a successful upgrade.

Do not generalize that wording to every current release. It is a requirement stated in the 9-202504 release notes. If your deployment used 9-202504, retain evidence that the supplementary patch was applied and that the required full account synchronization completed, then still perform the October 2026 advisory comparison against the final running release.

Troubleshooting verification failures

The page shows a release different from the change ticket

Use the value from the authorized server-side source as the current observation, then investigate the discrepancy. Check whether the upgrade was interrupted, whether you connected to a different server, and whether the browser displayed cached content. Do not select the more favorable value without resolving the conflict.

The upgrade completed but synchronization did not

Record the software release as observed, but mark the operational verification incomplete until synchronization succeeds or Cisco Support provides a documented resolution. The upgrade workflow includes synchronization as a post-upgrade action; a completed installer alone does not establish that the deployment is fully operational.

The signature file is missing or does not correspond

Do not proceed by guessing, reusing a signature from another release, or treating a successful file transfer as validation. Obtain the corresponding signature file through the supported Cisco process and record the package-signature pairing before retrying.

Administrators cannot find a documented version display

Because the reviewed Cisco upgrade guidance does not specify a universal version command or exact menu location, avoid copying instructions for another Cisco product. Escalate to Cisco Support with the deployment details and available upgrade records. Until the server release is confirmed, report the patch state as unverified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A connected device reports current licensing

Separate the device check from the server check. A current entitlement, successful authorization, or device-side licensing status may indicate that the device can communicate with a licensing service; it does not identify the SSM On-Prem server release or prove that the server meets either October advisory threshold.

When to involve Cisco Support

Cisco Support Case Manager is the appropriate service route when the release cannot be identified, the upgrade workflow fails, the signature requirement cannot be satisfied, synchronization remains incomplete, or advisory applicability is unclear. Supply the server deployment type, exact evidence already collected, attempted target release, package and signature details, and the relevant advisory titles. Ask Support to confirm the supported version-identification and recovery procedure for that deployment rather than requesting a generic device licensing command.

Final verification checklist

  • The product is identified as Cisco License On-Prem, formerly Cisco SSM On-Prem.
  • The exact running server release was observed from an authorized server source or confirmed upgrade record.
  • The release was compared with the October 7, 2026 hardening advisory.
  • The release was compared with the October 7, 2026 vulnerabilities advisory.
  • For a 10-series system, 10-202609 was used as the target when clearing the hardening advisory.
  • For a 9-202601-or-earlier system, migration to a fixed release was planned or completed.
  • The upgrade package had its corresponding signature file.
  • A VM database backup was made before the upgrade when applicable.
  • Post-upgrade synchronization completed.
  • The final server release was rechecked after the change.
  • Any stale browser display was addressed by clearing the cache and signing in again.
  • The record distinguishes server patch status from connected-device licensing status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cisco SSM On-Prem 10-202608 patched?

It satisfies the first-fixed value in Cisco’s separate October 7, 2026 vulnerabilities advisory, but the hardening advisory lists 10-202608 and earlier as affected. Use 10-202609 for a 10-series result that clears both advisories.

Does a router’s show version command verify the SSM On-Prem server patch?

No. Device commands such as show version and show license status describe the connected product instance. Verify the release on the Cisco License On-Prem server itself or in an authoritative server upgrade record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I cannot find the SSM server version in the interface?

Do not infer it from a client, bookmark, package name, or planned target. Record the status as unverified and ask Cisco Support for the supported version-identification method for your deployment.

Is an upgrade marked successful enough to call the server patched?

No. Retain evidence of the matching package and signature, completed upgrade, post-upgrade synchronization, and a final observation of the running server release. An installer message alone does not prove the target release is active.

What is special about release 9-202504?

Cisco’s version 9 release notes require the Supplementary Patch for every upgrade to or fresh installation of 9-202504, even if the operation appears to complete. They also require full synchronization of all SSM On-Prem accounts after a successful upgrade. This instruction is specific to that release.

The Bottom Line

Verify Cisco License On-Prem by observing the exact running server release, not a connected device’s licensing output. Compare it with both Cisco advisories dated October 7, 2026: 10-202609 is the first 10-series release that clears the hardening guidance, while 10-202608 does not. For 9-202601 and earlier, migrate to a fixed release. After upgrading, confirm the matching signature file, synchronization, and final server release, then retain the evidence and advisory thresholds used.
