Verify the exact ticker against its latest prospectus and every later supplement before relying on any claim about an XRP exchange-traded product. Confirm the trust or fund’s legal name, sponsor, trustee, service providers, XRP custodian, wallet and key controls, insurance limitations, redemption process, basket size, settlement method, valuation benchmark, expenses, and investor eligibility. Do not assume that you can redeem one share directly for XRP: product-level redemptions are generally handled in large baskets by authorized participants, while retail investors normally sell shares through a brokerage account.
The terms below reflect U.S. product filings and official materials available through October 13, 2026. Holdings, custodians, benchmarks, fees, and procedures can change, so treat the current filing as controlling.
Why the ticker alone is not enough
An XRP product’s marketing name does not tell you who legally owns the assets, who controls private keys, or who can redeem shares. Two products tracking the same digital asset may use different trusts, sponsors, custodians, valuation formulas, basket sizes, and settlement procedures.

Step 1: Establish the legal product and every service-provider role
Create an identity record
Before comparing custody or redemption, create a one-page record containing:
- Exact legal trust or fund name and ticker.
- Exchange where the shares trade.
- Sponsor and trustee.
- Transfer agent and administrator.
- Prime broker, if named.
- Cash custodian.
- XRP custodian or custodians.
- Prospectus date, registration-statement date, and dates of all later supplements.
Use the issuer’s investor-relations page only to locate documents. Verify the final answer in the SEC-filed prospectus, registration statement, annual report, and subsequent supplements. If the website and filing conflict, use the most recent operative filing and note the discrepancy for follow-up.
Understand what each role means
| Role | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsor | The legal entity responsible for organizing and operating the trust, and its stated duties and replacement rights. | The sponsor’s obligations and liability limits shape how operational problems are handled. |
| Trustee | Who holds the trust’s legal title or performs fiduciary and administrative functions. | The trustee may not be the party holding XRP or private keys. |
| XRP custodian | The entity storing XRP, controlling wallets and keys, and authorizing transfers. | Custody risk depends on wallet design, key governance, and contractual protections, not merely the custodian’s name. |
| Cash custodian | Where cash used for creations, redemptions, or expenses is held. | Cash custody is a separate relationship from XRP custody. |
| Prime broker | Whether the broker executes XRP trades, borrows assets, or supports creation and redemption operations. | Brokerage activity can introduce counterparty, settlement, and fee considerations. |
| Transfer agent and administrator | Who maintains the shareholder register, calculates or supports NAV, and processes administrative records. | These entities usually do not control the trust’s XRP. |
Example: roles disclosed for Grayscale’s product
Grayscale’s April 6, 2026 registration statement identifies Grayscale Investments Sponsors, LLC as sponsor, CSC Delaware Trust Company as trustee, BNY Mellon as transfer agent and administrator, Coinbase, Inc. as prime broker, and Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC as custodian. Its October 5, 2026 supplement adds Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. as an additional custodian while stating that Coinbase remains primary. The supplement says the amount to be moved to Anchorage had not yet been determined. These are disclosed roles for that product, not assumptions that apply to another ticker.

Determine how XRP is held
Search the prospectus and supplements for “custody,” “wallet,” “private key,” “segregated,” “omnibus,” “cold storage,” “hot wallet,” “insurance,” “loss,” and “replacement custodian.” Answer these questions in writing:
- Is the trust’s XRP held in a separate account or pooled with assets of other customers?
- Are wallets segregated by trust, or are they omnibus wallets with accounting records identifying the trust’s balance?
- Who generates, stores, and controls the private keys?
- How many approvals are required to move XRP, and which people or entities can authorize a transfer?
- Can any XRP be placed in hot wallets for deposits, withdrawals, liquidity, or other operations?
- Can the custodian appoint a subcustodian or move assets to a replacement custodian?
- What happens if a custodian becomes insolvent, loses keys, suffers a cyberattack, or cannot access the network?
Separate disclosed controls from guarantees
“Cold storage,” multi-party approval, or a segregated account describes a control or arrangement; it is not a promise that loss is impossible. Check the exact exceptions, service-level limits, and liability caps in the custody agreement summarized by the filing.
Insurance also requires careful reading. Identify the policy holder, covered events, aggregate limit, deductibles, exclusions, claim process, and whether the policy covers all trust XRP or only specified incidents. Insurance is not a blanket guarantee and does not make crypto custody equivalent to an insured bank deposit.
Product-specific custody illustrations
Bitwise’s 2025 Form 10-K names Coinbase Custody as XRP custodian and BNY Mellon as cash custodian and transfer agent. It describes the trust’s XRP accounts and says the sponsor may add or terminate custodians. Read any later amendment before relying on those arrangements.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
Grayscale’s October 5, 2026 supplement describes Coinbase as the primary custodian and permits allocating an undetermined portion to Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. It discusses cold-storage practices and limited situations in which hot wallets may be used. The supplement does not establish a universal allocation percentage; that answer depends on later operational disclosures.
A custodian’s name by itself does not establish segregation, wallet type, key control, insurance scope, or the percentage of assets held by that custodian.
Step 3: Distinguish a fund redemption from selling a retail share
Identify who is allowed to place an order
Look for “authorized participant,” “AP,” “basket,” “creation order,” “redemption order,” and “designee.” Determine whether only authorized participants can transact directly with the trust, whether liquidity providers may participate, and whether an AP can use a designated affiliate or other intermediary.
Retail shareholders ordinarily buy and sell shares in the secondary market through a brokerage account. They do not send one share to the trust and demand one share’s worth of XRP.

Record the basket and cutoff mechanics
For each product, record:
- Minimum creation and redemption basket size.
- Order cutoff time and applicable time zone.
- When the order is accepted, priced, and confirmed.
- Whether the AP delivers or receives cash, XRP, or a choice of settlement.
- When XRP or cash is transferred and when shares are issued or canceled.
- Transaction fees, network charges, spreads, and other costs.
- Conditions allowing an order to be delayed, rejected, suspended, or settled in another form.
Grayscale’s disclosed 10,000-share structure
Grayscale’s April 2026 registration statement describes 10,000-share baskets and cash orders involving authorized participants and liquidity providers. Its October 5, 2026 supplement says in-kind creation and redemption became available effective September 29, 2026, with authorized participants or their designees. This change concerns institutional basket processing; it does not give a retail holder a direct right to redeem a single share for XRP.
Other redemption formulations
Bitwise’s 2025 Form 10-K describes both cash and in-kind creation and redemption paths, along with operational timing and settlement details. Confirm the current filing for the exact cutoff, basket amount, and charges.
Canary’s November 2025 prospectus says redemption may be handled by distributing XRP in kind or selling XRP and distributing cash proceeds. The same prospectus discusses secondary-market premiums or discounts to NAV and brokerage charges. Those terms can be modified by a later supplement.

Step 4: Verify NAV, benchmark, expenses, and tracking effects
Find the valuation section
Locate the paragraphs explaining how the trust values XRP and calculates net asset value. Record:
- The named benchmark or reference rate.
- Valuation time and time zone.
- How the trust handles market disruption, unavailable prices, or extraordinary events.
- Whether forks, airdrops, staking-like rewards, or other network events are addressed.
- The expense ratio or other recurring charges and how they are paid.
The SEC exchange notice for Grayscale’s listing describes each share as a proportional interest in trust assets after expenses and liabilities. It also explains that the amount of XRP represented by each share can decline as trust XRP is used to pay expenses. This is different from a promise that each share will always contain a fixed quantity of XRP.
Check benchmark changes
21shares identifies an August 27, 2026 benchmark change for TOXR from the CME CF XRP-Dollar Reference Rate—New York Variant to the FTSE XRP Index. Use the current filing for the exact methodology and effective-date language. A benchmark change can alter how NAV is calculated even though the ticker remains the same.
Understand market-price divergence
NAV is an accounting value; the exchange price is set by buyers and sellers. Shares can trade at a premium or discount to NAV because of supply, demand, market hours, creation and redemption frictions, liquidity, or XRP-market volatility. Review the product’s disclosure of these risks rather than assuming an exchange-traded share will match NAV continuously.
Step 5: Read legal-status and risk disclosures
Do not treat a filing or listing as an endorsement
A registration statement, prospectus, or exchange listing means that required disclosure and listing processes have occurred. It is not an SEC endorsement of investment quality, custody safety, profitability, or suitability.

Check the Investment Company Act and other protections
Read the sections explaining whether the product is registered as an investment company, which regulatory framework applies, and which protections do not apply. Canary’s November 2025 prospectus states that its shares are not interests in or obligations of its sponsor or trustee and describes regulatory protections that do not apply. Compare that language with the exact product you are considering; do not transfer Canary’s legal-status description to another trust.
List product-specific failure scenarios
Make a separate note for risks involving:
- Custodian insolvency, hacking, key loss, or withdrawal restrictions.
- Errors or delays in XRP transfers and blockchain settlement.
- Temporary suspension of creations or redemptions.
- Premiums or discounts between market price and NAV.
- Benchmark disruption or methodology changes.
- Regulatory changes, litigation, or tax treatment.
- Termination of a sponsor, custodian, prime broker, or other service provider.

A practical comparison worksheet
When comparing two products, place the following fields in adjacent columns and fill every cell from the same type of current document:
- Legal trust name, ticker, exchange, sponsor, and trustee.
- Transfer agent, administrator, prime broker, cash custodian, and XRP custodian.
- Segregated or omnibus account description.
- Cold-storage policy, hot-wallet permissions, and private-key authorization process.
- Insurance carrier or arrangement, limits, exclusions, and loss allocation.
- Authorized-participant eligibility and any designee rights.
- Basket size, cutoff time, settlement sequence, and transaction charges.
- Cash, in-kind, or alternative redemption paths.
- NAV benchmark, valuation time, disruption provisions, and effective date.
- Expense ratio or other trust expenses and their effect on XRP per share.
- Premium and discount disclosures and secondary-market risks.
- Investment Company Act status, sponsor protections, termination provisions, and other legal warnings.
Write “not stated in the current filing” when a document does not answer a question. That is more accurate than inferring an answer from a custodian’s reputation or from another product’s prospectus.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating the named custodian as the whole custody analysis
Correction: Read the wallet, segregation, key-control, hot-wallet, insurance, and replacement-custodian clauses. A name identifies a counterparty, not the complete control environment.
Mistake: assuming retail investors can redeem XRP
Correction: Find the AP and basket provisions. Unless the prospectus expressly provides otherwise, a retail holder exits by selling shares through a broker.
Mistake: relying on the original prospectus after a supplement
Correction: Build a document timeline and read each supplement for replacement language. The later document may change custodians, settlement options, benchmarks, or eligibility.
Mistake: reading insurance as a deposit guarantee
Correction: Record exclusions, limits, deductibles, covered events, and who bears uninsured losses.
Mistake: assuming the exchange price equals NAV
Correction: Check the product’s premium-and-discount risk discussion and the conditions affecting creations and redemptions.

Final verification checklist
- Have you written down the exact ticker and legal trust name?
- Did you use the latest prospectus plus every later supplement?
- Can you identify sponsor, trustee, administrator, transfer agent, prime broker, cash custodian, and XRP custodian?
- Do you know whether XRP is segregated or omnibus and who controls private keys?
- Did you check hot-wallet permissions, transfer approvals, insurance limits, exclusions, and replacement rights?
- Do you know who may create or redeem, the basket size, cutoff, settlement sequence, and charges?
- Did you distinguish an AP’s in-kind transaction from a retail sale?
- Did you record the current NAV benchmark and any change date?
- Did you account for expenses reducing XRP represented per share?
- Did you read market-price, regulatory, custody, and termination risks?
- Have you marked every unanswered item as “not stated” rather than guessing?
This process gives you a documented answer to what the product is, who controls its XRP, and how transactions actually work. It does not eliminate market, custody, regulatory, or operational risk, and it is not individualized investment advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I redeem one XRP ETF share for XRP directly?
Usually not. Direct creations and redemptions are generally basket transactions handled by authorized participants or their designees. A retail shareholder ordinarily sells shares through a brokerage account unless the specific prospectus expressly provides a different right.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does a cold-storage statement guarantee that the trust cannot lose XRP?
No. Cold storage is a control description, not a guarantee. Review key authorization, transfer procedures, hot-wallet exceptions, insurance exclusions, and liability limits.
What should I do if the issuer webpage conflicts with the prospectus?
Use the most recent SEC-filed prospectus or supplement as the controlling disclosure, note the conflict, and check whether a newer amendment resolves it.
Why can the XRP amount represented by each share fall?
Trust expenses and liabilities are paid from assets. The SEC exchange notice explains that using trust XRP for expenses can reduce the XRP represented by each share over time.
