Before entering card details, verify five things: you are on the correct domain, you can identify the business, its policies are usable, independent sources do not show a pattern of complaints, and your payment method gives you a way to dispute a problem. HTTPS is necessary for an encrypted connection, but it is not proof that a retailer is legitimate. If the address is a lookalike, the offer is implausibly cheap, the seller creates urgency, requests unrelated personal data, or demands an irreversible payment, close the checkout and investigate instead.
Use this stop-or-proceed test first
Do not treat legitimacy as a single badge or score. A convincing store can use HTTPS, polished graphics and copied reviews while hiding its identity or making refunds impossible. Proceed only when the checks below produce a consistent picture.
- Stop immediately: the domain is misspelled or designed to resemble another retailer; the seller will not provide a usable contact method; the price is far below comparable offers without a credible explanation; checkout demands gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment outside a marketplace; or the site pressures you to pay before you can read its policies.
- Pause and investigate: contact information is incomplete, reviews conflict, product photos appear generic, delivery promises are vague, or the refund process shifts unexpected costs to you.
- Proceed cautiously: the domain is correct, the operator is identifiable, policies answer practical questions, independent reputation checks are reasonably consistent, and you can pay with a method that supports a dispute.
A single reassuring signal cannot cancel a serious warning. A misspelled address, for example, is enough to close the tab even if the page has a padlock.

Read the domain, not just the logo
Look at the address bar character by character. Scam stores often use a misspelling, an extra word, a different top-level domain, or a lookalike character. A familiar logo and matching colors do not establish that you reached the real company.

The Better Business Bureau advises closing the tab when the domain spelling is wrong. Its guidance also recommends searching the site name with “scam” or “reviews” when you are uncertain: BBB: How to identify a fake website.
Start from a trusted path
Instead of following a surprising advertisement, message or shortened link, type the known address yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. Check that links from search results lead to the same domain before you sign in or pay. Be especially careful with links sent by email or social media: an attacker can make the visible text look correct while the destination is different.
Check the checkout domain again
Some stores move to a payment subdomain or a third-party processor. That can be legitimate, but the change should be explained by the store and the processor should be recognizable. If checkout suddenly moves to an unrelated domain, asks you to continue in a chat app, or tells you to pay directly to an individual, stop and verify through the retailer’s published contact information.

HTTPS protects data in transit between your browser and the website. It does not tell you who operates the site or whether the seller will ship anything. The Federal Trade Commission puts the distinction plainly: “The ‘s’ after http means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.” Read the FTC’s online-shopping guidance at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/online-shopping.
Use the lock or connection information in your browser to confirm that the page is encrypted, then continue with the identity, policy, reputation and payment checks. Never enter payment details on a page that produces a certificate warning, has mixed-content security errors, or asks you to bypass a browser warning.
3. Confirm who operates the store
Look for complete contact details
A legitimate retailer should make it possible to reach a responsible business. Look for a physical street address, a working email address and a telephone number. Test the email or phone before buying if the purchase is expensive or time-sensitive. A contact form alone gives you less ability to document who responded.

Ask a practical question about stock, delivery or returns. Keep the answer and the date in writing. Vague replies, copied wording, unreachable numbers or an address that belongs to an unrelated business are reasons to stop.
Separate the platform from the seller
On a marketplace, the platform may process the order while an independent seller supplies the product. Record both names. The platform’s reputation does not automatically validate every seller using it. Check the individual seller’s history, location, listing details and response record, and communicate through the marketplace so there is a time-stamped record.
The FTC explains the distinction and the questions to ask in Buying from an online marketplace. Confirm which party handles shipping, returns, refunds and disputes before placing the order.
4. Read the policies before checkout
Policies are useful only when they answer what happens to your particular order. Open the shipping, return, refund, privacy and terms pages from the footer or checkout, and save copies or screenshots if the wording may change.
Shipping and delivery
- Is the promised date a dispatch date or an arrival date?
- Which carrier and shipping origin are stated?
- Are customs, duties or handling charges possible?
- What happens when tracking stops, an item is lost, or the seller misses the promised date?
Returns and refunds
- How many days do you have to request a return, and from which event is the period measured?
- Who pays return shipping?
- Are restocking fees, opened-package exclusions or final-sale categories disclosed?
- How and when is the refund issued?
Privacy and terms
Check what information the store collects, why it needs it, how long it retains it and whether it shares data. A request for information unrelated to fulfilling the order—such as an unnecessary identity document or account credentials—deserves a pause. Terms should identify the contracting business, governing location and a usable route for complaints.

Marketplace guarantees
If a platform advertises a buyer guarantee, read its conditions rather than assuming every transaction qualifies. Note filing deadlines, excluded products, required communication and whether you must return the item before reimbursement.
5. Research reputation across independent sources
Search the exact seller name and domain with terms such as “review,” “complaint” and “scam.” Use several independent sources instead of relying on the store’s testimonials or one star average. Compare dates, locations, product categories and the details of each report.
Evaluate the quality of reviews
- Prefer reviews that describe a specific order, delivery event or support interaction.
- Look for patterns across many sources: undelivered orders, counterfeit goods, unexplained charges or refusal to refund.
- Check whether the reviewer appears to have received an incentive or whether many entries use identical language.
- Give more weight to recent, detailed reports than to an old aggregate score.
Star ratings can be manipulated or incentivized, so they are not sufficient by themselves. The FTC’s guidance on online shopping explains why a multi-source check is stronger than a single rating: FTC online shopping advice.
6. Test whether the offer makes sense
Compare the complete cost
Compare the item’s total landed cost—not only the headline price—with established sellers. Include shipping, taxes, duties, service fees and any required subscription. A price dramatically below comparable offers may indicate counterfeit goods, a bait listing or a seller that does not possess the item.
Check the product evidence
Read specifications, model numbers, dimensions, compatibility statements and warranty terms. Search distinctive phrases from the listing and inspect product images for stock-photo reuse or inconsistent branding. The FTC notes that unusually low prices and stock-only imagery can be warning signs in marketplace listings: FTC marketplace buying advice.
Match the seller to the item
Confirm that the seller name, shipping origin and warranty provider make sense for the product. A supposedly local retailer shipping from an undisclosed country, or a new account selling large quantities of high-demand goods, warrants additional verification.

7. Choose a payment method with recourse
Why a credit card is generally safer
The FTC recommends credit cards for online purchases because they generally provide a dispute process when merchandise is missing, materially different, defective or charged incorrectly. Review your issuer’s rules and deadlines; keep the order confirmation and all correspondence so you can document the claim.
Payments that should end the transaction
Do not proceed when a seller insists that you pay only by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, a payment app without purchase protection, or a method outside the marketplace. These transfers can be difficult to reverse. The FTC states: “Never buy anything from online sellers that insist you can only pay with gift cards, by wire transfers through companies like Western Union or MoneyGram, with a payment app, or with cryptocurrency.” See the FTC’s online-shopping guidance.
Protect the payment account
Use a unique password for the shopping account and enable multi-factor authentication when available. Pay from a trusted device and network, and do not email card numbers or send photographs of payment cards. If a site stores cards, check whether you can remove the saved method after the order.
8. Make a written verification record
Before paying, save the exact URL, seller name, item listing, advertised price, shipping promise, policy pages, messages and any guarantee terms. After checkout, retain the confirmation, tracking information, receipts and card statement. Screenshots should include dates or be stored with a note recording when you captured them.
This record helps you compare what was promised with what arrived and gives a card issuer or marketplace a clear timeline. Do not rely on a seller’s page remaining online.

9. What to do when something goes wrong
Start with the seller, in writing
Describe the missing, incorrect or defective order, state the remedy you want and set a reasonable response deadline. Keep the message factual and attach the relevant order evidence. Do not send additional sensitive information merely because the seller requests it during a dispute.

Use the payment dispute process
If the seller does not resolve the issue, contact the card issuer or other payment provider promptly and ask about its dispute procedure and deadline. Provide the order record, promised delivery date, policy terms, correspondence and statement entry. Continue monitoring the account for unauthorized charges.
Report suspected fraud
For suspected online-shopping fraud in the United States, report the matter to the Federal Trade Commission and seek help from your state consumer-protection office. USAGov lists complaint routes at usa.gov/online-purchase-complaints. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it creates a record that can help identify repeated conduct.

Standalone store or marketplace: apply the right questions
For a standalone store, concentrate on the legal business identity, contactability, policy completeness and the history attached to the exact domain. For a marketplace, investigate both the platform and the individual seller, then verify which party’s guarantee covers the order. Keep all communications on the platform when possible, because an off-platform payment or conversation may fall outside its protection.

If one category is materially weaker—especially identity or payment recourse—do not compensate for it with a high star rating or a low price.
A practical five-minute checkout routine
- Read the full domain and close the page if any character or domain ending is wrong.
- Confirm HTTPS, while remembering that encryption is not legitimacy.
- Find and test the street address, email and phone number; record the operator or marketplace seller.
- Read shipping, return, refund, privacy, terms and guarantee conditions, including deadlines and fees.
- Search the exact seller and domain with “review,” “complaint” and “scam,” and compare multiple detailed sources.
- Compare the complete price, specifications, images, seller identity and shipping origin with other offers.
- Pay only through a method that provides a realistic dispute route, preferably a credit card under your issuer’s rules.
- Save the listing, policies, messages, confirmation and payment record before leaving the site.
If any step produces a lookalike domain, pressure to act, an implausible offer, an irrelevant data request or a payment that is hard to recover, do not enter payment details.
