Do not pay or reply to an unsolicited extortion email. Keep the original message and its full headers, avoid every link and attachment in it, verify any claimed sender through contact details you find independently, and report the message. A threat that someone recorded you, hacked your webcam, or will expose private material is a known email-blackmail pattern; the threat itself does not prove that the sender accessed your device or accounts.
Start with the safest decision
Pause before doing anything the message demands. Extortion emails are designed to make you act while frightened: they may claim access to your phone or computer, accuse you of visiting adult websites, threaten to send compromising material to family or coworkers, impose a short deadline, and demand Bitcoin. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) described 48 hours as a typical deadline in an April 20, 2020 alert. That figure describes a tactic reported in that alert, not a reliable countdown and not evidence that the sender has access.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies cryptocurrency-blackmail emails that claim to have video or pictures of the recipient as scams. Its consumer advice is direct: the person behind the email is a scammer, and you should not pay. The FBI likewise advises against paying online extortion demands because payment funds continued criminal activity.
A personal detail can be intimidation, not proof
The message may contain an old username, a former password, your name, or a reference to a website you once used. IC3 says criminals use personal information to increase intimidation. A detail that is already public or came from an old data breach does not establish current control of your webcam, phone, email, or cloud account.

There is one important exception in your response: if the email includes a password you still use, treat that password as exposed even if the rest of the claim is false. Change it by going to the legitimate service yourself, make the replacement unique, and enable multifactor authentication when available.
Recognize the pattern without treating it as proof
| Message feature | What it indicates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown or unfamiliar sender | A common feature of unsolicited extortion messages | That the sender is inside your account or device |
| An old username or password | Possible use of breach data or publicly available information to frighten you | Current access, especially if the password is no longer used |
| Accusations about adult websites or compromising conduct | A standard blackmail script identified by IC3 | That the accusation is true or that a recording exists |
| Claims of spyware, a hacked webcam, or a recording | An intimidation tactic described by the FTC and IC3 | Evidence that spyware or a camera compromise occurred |
| Threats to contact family, friends, coworkers, or social networks | Pressure intended to make you pay quickly | Proof that the sender has those contacts or any material |
| A short payment window | Urgency designed to prevent careful checking; IC3 cited 48 hours as typical in its 2020 alert | A genuine deadline or a reason to skip verification |
| A Bitcoin demand | A characteristic payment method in the scam described by IC3 | Proof that the sender can carry out the threat |
No current prevalence statistic is established by the federal guidance cited here, so do not assume that every message uses all of these features or that a message lacking one of them is safe.
Use this verification procedure
- Stop interacting with the message. Do not pay, negotiate, answer questions, scan a QR code, click a link, open an unexpected attachment, or call a telephone number supplied in the email. Replying confirms that your address is monitored and gives the sender an opportunity to pressure you further.
- Preserve the original evidence. Keep the email in the mailbox where you received it. Save or export the original message with its full headers if your mail service offers a view-original, download-original, or full-header option. Do not edit the content. Record the Bitcoin address exactly as shown if one is supplied.
- Inspect, but do not activate, the message. You may look at the displayed sender address and the destination shown when you cautiously hover over a link, but do not open the link. Compare the visible address with the actual address and look for misspellings, extra words, unexpected domains, or a display name that does not match the address. Inspection can reveal warning signs; it cannot authenticate the sender.
- Compare the request with normal procedures. If the email claims to represent an employer, bank, account provider, school, government agency, or a person you know, ask whether the request fits that organization’s established process. A demand for cryptocurrency, secrecy, or immediate action is inconsistent with many ordinary account and customer-service procedures, but the comparison is only a warning sign.
- Verify through an independent route. Find the organization’s website by entering an address you already trust or using a bookmark you created previously. Use a telephone number already known to you, an official directory, or a separate conversation with the person allegedly involved. Do not use a web address, phone number, reply address, or other contact information supplied by the threatening email.
- Make the decision without the sender. If independent verification does not confirm the claim, do not respond or pay. Even if a message appears technically polished, spoofing can change an email address or URL by one character and can imitate a trusted source.
- Secure genuinely exposed credentials. If the email contains a password you still use, visit the service independently, change that password, make it unique, and turn on multifactor authentication. Do not use a password-reset link from the extortion message. Change reused passwords on other services as well, using each service’s legitimate site.
- Report the message. Submit the preserved email, its headers, and the Bitcoin address, if present, to the appropriate reporting channel. Keep your copy after reporting; a report does not require you to continue communicating with the sender.
How to inspect an email safely
Check the real sender address
A display name is not an identity check. Expand the sender details in your mail application and inspect the complete address. Look for a domain that differs from the organization named in the message, a lookalike spelling, an added word or hyphen, or a free-mail address used to impersonate a business. The FBI warns that spoofing can make an address or URL differ from the genuine one by only a single character.

Attackers can spoof sender information, compromise a legitimate mailbox, or make a message look as though it came from someone you know. Treat the address as one clue in a larger process, not as a certificate of authenticity.

Examine links without opening them
On a computer, cautiously hovering over a link may reveal its destination; on a phone, use the mail application’s link-preview or copy-link function only if it does not open the page. Compare the destination’s domain and spelling with the organization’s independently found website. Do not paste a suspicious address into a browser just to see what happens. The FBI and FTC both warn that spoofed URLs can lead to malware, payment theft, or disclosure of sensitive information.
Keep headers with the message
Headers help investigators trace delivery and evaluate whether a message was sent through infrastructure associated with the claimed sender. Preserve the complete header view supplied by your email service rather than relying only on a screenshot of the message body. IC3 specifically asks for the extortion email with header information and the Bitcoin address when available.
What to do when a password appears in the email
An old credential can come from a previous breach and be used as a fear tactic. Do not test the password by signing in through a link in the message. Instead, type the service’s known address yourself or use a trusted bookmark, change the password, and avoid reusing it anywhere else. The FBI recommends strong, non-reused passwords and multifactor authentication.

If the threat involves intimate images or a young person
Financially motivated sextortion requires a different level of support because the person being threatened may be a minor or may fear immediate social harm. Do not send money, additional images, or explanations. The FBI advises reporting the predator’s account, blocking contact, saving profiles and messages, and asking a trusted adult or law enforcement for help. Cooperating rarely stops the blackmail and harassment.
When a child or teenager is involved
Tell a trusted adult and contact local law enforcement promptly, especially if there is an immediate safety threat. Do not blame, shame, or punish the young person for being targeted. The FBI describes exploited young people as victims of a crime and emphasizes that the victim is not at fault. Preserve the messages and account details before blocking the sender.
Image-removal resources
The FBI points minor victims to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Take It Down service and adult victims to StopNCII for image-removal assistance where eligible. These services address distribution of intimate images; they do not replace reporting threats or seeking immediate help when someone is in danger.

The cited guidance is from U.S. agencies. For a cryptocurrency-blackmail email, the FTC directs recipients to report the scam, and IC3 accepts complaints about online extortion. You may also contact an FBI field office. Include the original email, full headers, the sender details, the Bitcoin address, dates and times, and a factual description of what happened. Do not embellish the account or continue a conversation to gather more evidence.

If the message impersonates a business or uses a company’s domain, the FTC also recommends reporting to local law enforcement, IC3, and the FTC. Phishing emails may be forwarded to reportphishing@apwg.org. Use the reporting channel’s own instructions for attachments and header data.
People outside the United States should use their national cybercrime reporting service and local police or emergency services as appropriate. Reporting names, evidence requirements, and legal duties vary by country; do not assume that a U.S. form or deadline applies where you live.

The FTC describes SPF, DKIM, and DMARC as email-authentication controls that help receiving servers evaluate messages and can make domain spoofing harder. They are useful parts of an organization’s domain-security program, but checking authentication results is not a general consumer test that proves an extortion claim is true or false.

Do not confuse a personal unsolicited blackmail email with a confirmed ransomware incident. The FTC warns that paying ransomware does not guarantee recovery; an organization facing a suspected compromise should rely on its incident procedures and qualified advisers rather than negotiating from an employee’s inbox.

Keep the email, payment details, wallet address, and any transaction records, then report the extortion to the relevant authorities. Payment does not establish that the sender possessed the claimed material and does not guarantee that threats will stop.
A compact decision checklist
- Is the message unsolicited and threatening? Treat it as a likely scam and do not pay or reply.
- Does it include a password you still use? Change that password independently, make it unique, and enable multifactor authentication.
- Does it ask you to click, call, scan, open, or pay? Do none of those things from the message.
- Does it claim to represent an organization? Verify through an independently found website or known contact route.
- Does it involve a child or intimate images? Save evidence, involve a trusted adult or law enforcement, block the account, and use the FBI-linked removal resources where eligible.
- Do you have the original message, full headers, and Bitcoin address? Preserve them for the report.
What verification can and cannot tell you
Sender-domain checks, link inspection, header review, and independent contact can expose inconsistencies and help investigators. They cannot prove that a threatening claim is genuine, and a technically authentic message can still contain a false accusation. The safest response to an unsolicited extortion demand remains non-engagement, evidence preservation, independent account security, and reporting.
