To vet an Amazon purchase, inspect the exact offer’s Sold by and Ships from fields, open the seller’s details and feedback, and compare the offer with the manufacturer’s specifications. If the product supports Amazon Transparency, scan its code in the Amazon Shopping or Transparency app. Keep the listing and order records; if the item is materially different or inauthentic, use the applicable return, order-support, or A-to-z claim route before its deadline.
This process reduces avoidable risk, but no single badge, review score, price, or fulfillment method proves that a particular unit is genuine. The steps below reflect Amazon.com and US-facing guidance; labels, programs, eligibility, and deadlines can differ on another Amazon marketplace.
Start with the exact offer, not just the product page
Amazon product detail pages can combine offers from several sellers. The title, photos, star rating, and description may describe a shared catalog page, while the unit you receive depends on the particular offer you select. Before adding an item to your cart, make sure you are evaluating the offer attached to the condition, variant, price, and delivery promise you actually want.

Find the seller and fulfiller
On Amazon.com, look below the Buy Now button for Sold by and Ships from. Amazon’s buyer help page describes this as the way to find who sells and fulfills an item. A third-party offer fulfilled by Amazon normally shows the third-party business beside Sold by and Amazon beside Ships from.

Those labels answer different questions:
- Sold by identifies the seller associated with that offer. It does not establish that the seller made the product or is an authorized dealer.
- Ships from identifies the party shown as fulfilling the order. “Ships from Amazon” describes logistics; it does not mean Amazon sold or manufactured the unit.
Open the offer selector when there is more than one seller. Compare the seller name, fulfillment method, condition, price, delivery estimate, and available protections for the offer you are about to buy. Do not assume the offer currently displayed will remain selected after you change a size, color, storage capacity, or other variation.
Use this pre-purchase verification workflow
- Record the offer identity. Note the seller name shown beside Sold by, the fulfiller beside Ships from, the condition, and the exact variant. Save a screenshot or the page URL if the offer is expensive or time-sensitive. Amazon can change which offer is featured on a shared detail page.
- Open seller-specific information. Select the seller name or the seller-details link and read the recent feedback and any business information Amazon displays. Focus on comments about receiving the wrong model, opened packaging, missing accessories, serial-number issues, or suspected counterfeits. Product star ratings are reviews of the cataloged product, not a score for this seller’s inventory or service.
- Compare the listing with the manufacturer’s description. Check the brand, model or part number, dimensions, capacity, color, revision, included accessories, warranty language, region, and condition. Compare packaging photographs and required markings when the manufacturer publishes them. A listing that quietly changes a specification or promises contents absent from the manufacturer’s description deserves additional scrutiny.
- Investigate unusual pricing without treating it as proof. A materially lower price, vague condition statement, inconsistent photographs, or rushed-looking copy can justify a closer check. The available official guidance does not establish a discount percentage that identifies a counterfeit, so price is a prompt to verify—not a counterfeit test.
- Look for product-specific authentication. If the product is enrolled in Amazon Transparency, use the code-scanning process described below. If it is not enrolled, check whether the manufacturer offers a serial-number lookup, registration check, warranty validation, or list of authorized retailers. Use the manufacturer’s own support channel when the result is ambiguous.
- Keep payment and messages on Amazon. Do not move the transaction to an outside payment method or rely on a seller’s request to communicate elsewhere. Keeping the order and messages in your Amazon account preserves a clearer record for support, a return, or an eligible claim.
How to judge seller feedback correctly
Seller feedback can reveal patterns, but it cannot certify the next item. Read recent, offer-relevant comments rather than relying on a single percentage. Look for repeated reports involving authenticity, used goods sold as new, missing parts, altered packaging, or refusal to resolve problems. Also note whether complaints concern shipping speed or customer service only; those issues may not answer the authenticity question.
The official guidance does not support a universal positive-feedback cutoff that makes a seller safe. A high score may reflect many ordinary transactions while a small number of recent authenticity complaints still matter. Conversely, a newer seller may have too little history for a meaningful conclusion. Treat feedback as one input alongside the exact offer, condition, listing consistency, price, and available recourse.
What each Amazon signal can and cannot prove

Verify the product details before you pay
Match the model, variant, and condition
Counterfeit risk is not the only reason an order can be wrong. Marketplace listings can also contain a genuine product in the wrong size, regional version, revision, or condition. Compare the exact model number—not just a family name—and confirm whether the listing says new, used, renewed, collectible, or another condition. Check included chargers, adapters, manuals, mounts, software licenses, and other contents that affect compatibility.
Check the seller’s wording against the manufacturer
Manufacturers often publish a specification sheet, packaging images, warranty terms, and regional compatibility information. Compare those details with the Amazon listing. Watch for a brand name that appears only in the title but not on the product or packaging, a warranty promise that the manufacturer does not describe, or photographs showing a different revision from the written specifications. Visual similarity alone is not a universal authentication method; branding is only one comparison point.

Treat missing information as uncertainty
A listing that omits a model number, gives contradictory capacities, or uses stock photographs for a product with several revisions leaves you with less evidence. Ask a specific question through Amazon’s normal seller-contact function if necessary, but do not treat a confident reply as independent proof. If the answer does not resolve the discrepancy, select a different offer or buy through a channel the manufacturer identifies as authorized.
Amazon Transparency: when a code can help
Amazon says customers can scan Amazon-issued Transparency codes with the Amazon Shopping app or the Transparency app for supported products. The check applies only to products enrolled in the Transparency program and only when the item carries the relevant code. It is not available for every brand, category, or listing.
How to scan
- Install or update the Amazon Shopping app or the Transparency app on a compatible phone.
- Locate the Transparency code on the product or its packaging. Do not assume that an ordinary barcode is a Transparency code.
- Open the app’s scanning feature and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Read the result in context. A successful program result is evidence associated with that enrolled item; it does not convert every other product from the same seller into a verified item.
If the product is not enrolled, contact the manufacturer through its official support channel and ask what serial-number, registration, packaging, or authorized-retailer checks it provides. Do not infer that the absence of a Transparency code means the product is counterfeit; the program is optional and product-specific.
Inspect the shipment as soon as it arrives
Open the package promptly while the order, return window, and seller records are easy to access. Compare the delivered item with the saved offer and the manufacturer’s specifications. Check the model and serial number, labels, seals, print quality, included components, firmware or software behavior, and signs that packaging was opened or altered. A mismatch does not prove counterfeiting—the seller may have shipped the wrong genuine item—but it is a reason to stop using the product and document the discrepancy.
Preserve useful evidence
- Photograph the shipping carton, product packaging, labels, seals, serial number, and every visible discrepancy.
- Keep the invoice, order page, offer details, seller name, and delivery record.
- Save messages exchanged through Amazon and note the date of each contact.
- If a scan, serial lookup, or manufacturer response produces a result, save that result with the order record.
Do not alter a serial number, discard packaging, or send the item to an unofficial “authentication” service before you understand the seller’s return instructions. For safety-related goods, stop using an item that appears unsafe or materially different and follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance.

What to do when an item is wrong or possibly counterfeit
Use the order’s current return route first
Open the order in Amazon and choose the current return or problem-report option that matches the facts: wrong item, materially different condition, missing contents, or suspected counterfeit. Follow the label and packaging instructions shown for that order. Amazon’s screens and available reasons can vary by marketplace, seller, category, and date, so use the terms displayed in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic deadline.

Escalate through order support when needed
If the seller does not resolve the problem, use Amazon’s order-support path and provide the evidence you retained. Describe the discrepancy precisely—such as a different model number or missing accessory—instead of making a broad accusation unsupported by what you can show.
Check A-to-z eligibility and timing
Amazon describes A-to-z protection for eligible third-party transactions and lists claim reasons and procedural timeframes on its buyer-help pages. Eligibility and deadlines depend on the transaction and marketplace. Check the current A-to-z instructions attached to your order and submit within the stated window if the return or seller-resolution route has not fixed the issue. A-to-z protection is potential recourse, not a substitute for checking the offer before purchase.
Contact the manufacturer when authenticity remains uncertain
A manufacturer may be able to interpret a serial number, packaging feature, Transparency result, or warranty status. Ask what evidence it needs and keep its response. A manufacturer’s confirmation can help explain the issue to Amazon, while a refusal to comment does not by itself establish that an item is fake.
What Amazon’s anti-counterfeiting policy means for buyers
Amazon’s US Anti-Counterfeiting Policy states, "The sale of non-authentic products is strictly prohibited." The policy says sellers may be required to provide documentation such as invoices showing authenticity or authorization, and it describes possible actions including removing suspect listings and enforcing seller-account rules.

That is a marketplace rule and an enforcement framework, not an authenticity certificate for an individual offer. A prohibited product can still appear in a listing until a problem is detected or reported, and policy enforcement does not tell you which unit is in a particular shipment. Buyer-side checks and prompt documentation therefore remain important.
Amazon also describes a brand as a name representing a product or set of products, with products sharing a name, logo, or other identifying mark on the product or packaging. A visible brand mark can help you compare an item with the manufacturer’s published information, but appearance alone cannot authenticate every product.

Assuming Amazon fulfillment means Amazon sold it
“Ships from Amazon” identifies fulfillment for that offer. Read the separate Sold by field before concluding who is responsible for the sale.
Using product stars as a seller score
Product reviews usually describe the product page shared by many offers. Seller feedback is the relevant place to look for transaction-level patterns, and neither score guarantees authenticity.
Rejecting or accepting an offer based on a discount alone
Prices change for legitimate reasons such as clearance, import differences, bundles, or condition. A low price warrants comparison; it is not a validated counterfeit threshold.

Assuming every product has a scannable authenticity code
Transparency scanning works only for supported, enrolled products carrying the program code. No code is not proof of a counterfeit.
Relying on a single photograph or logo
Counterfeiters can copy visible packaging, and genuine products can have regional or packaging revisions. Compare multiple specifications and, when possible, use a manufacturer-provided verification method.
Waiting until the deadline is nearly over
Returns and claims have conditions and time limits. Save records and start the applicable process as soon as you identify a problem.

When several offers appear for the same product, compare them side by side rather than choosing the first featured offer. The strongest candidate is the one whose seller identity, condition, model details, fulfillment, price, delivery promise, feedback, and available buyer protection all make sense together. If one offer is cheaper but has an unclear condition or conflicting specifications, the apparent saving may not justify the uncertainty. If an offer has a clear model number, consistent manufacturer details, understandable seller history, and a return route that fits your needs, it gives you better evidence—not an absolute guarantee.
For high-value, safety-critical, collectible, or warranty-dependent purchases, add the manufacturer’s authorized-retailer list or serial-number process to the Amazon checks. If the manufacturer cannot support marketplace purchases for that product, use the purchase channel it recommends. For ordinary low-cost items, the same workflow still helps, but you can scale the amount of documentation to the financial and safety consequences of a mistake.
Marketplace and policy limits to keep in mind
The guidance above is based on Amazon.com and US-facing policy, buyer-help, Transparency, and protection information. Amazon’s interface, return reasons, claim rules, program availability, and deadlines may change. A different country’s Amazon marketplace may use different consumer-law rights, seller labels, or claim procedures. Always open the current help page and the terms attached to your own order before relying on a deadline or eligibility statement.
No official source cited here establishes a universal probability that an Amazon offer is counterfeit, a seller-feedback percentage that guarantees safety, or a price discount that proves fraud. Avoid articles or social posts that present any of those as a universal test without identifying the product, marketplace, date, and evidence behind the claim.
