Treat an AI journal recommendation as a shortlist, not a submission decision. Before uploading a manuscript, independently confirm the journal’s scope, recent content, article type, author instructions, identity, peer-review process, indexing, archiving, fees, licensing, and compliance with your funder or institution. A matching score can save search time, but it cannot establish suitability or predict acceptance.
What an AI recommendation actually tells you
Journal finders typically compare an abstract or keywords with content in a publisher’s own portfolio. The result is a relevance-ranked list, not an editorial assessment. Elsevier states that each journal’s editorial team evaluates submissions independently and that its Journal Finder gives “no guarantees for acceptance.” Its finder matches against eligible Elsevier journals indexed in Scopus, so a relevant newer, smaller, non-Elsevier, or not-yet-indexed journal may not appear; Elsevier also acknowledges that recommendations can contain errors. A recommendation is useful for generating candidates. It does not verify that a journal accepts your article type, meets a funder’s open-access rule, has a legitimate editorial operation, charges an affordable fee, or can publish within your deadline. Those questions require checking the journal’s current, official pages.
Verify a candidate in seven steps
1. Record the journal’s identity before opening links
Copy the exact journal title, ISSN (or eISSN), publisher, and official journal URL into a worksheet. Confirm that all four refer to the same publication. Similar titles, acquired journals, and cloned websites can make a search result look credible when it belongs to a different journal.

- Check the print and online ISSN against the journal’s masthead and an independent registry or index record.
- Confirm that the publisher name, editorial-office email, postal address, and telephone or contact form are consistent across the journal site.
- Use the journal’s own domain, not a shortened link or an unaffiliated submission portal reached through an advertisement.
- Save a PDF or dated screenshot of the identity page; websites and ownership details can change.
2. Test topical and readership fit manually
Read the complete aims-and-scope page, then inspect several recent issues. Look for papers that resemble yours in subject, methods, article type, geographic focus, and intended audience. A keyword overlap is not enough: a journal may mention your topic but publish only clinical studies, brief communications, or a different disciplinary perspective.
- Write a one-sentence description of your manuscript’s question, method, population or dataset, and contribution.
- Find at least three recent articles with a genuinely comparable question or method.
- Check whether those examples are the same article type you plan to submit.
- Note exclusions, geographic restrictions, and special-section requirements in the scope statement.
- If the fit remains uncertain, email the editorial office from the address on the official site and retain the reply with your submission records.

3. Read the current Guide for Authors
Open the journal’s Guide for Authors, submission guidelines, or equivalent page from the journal site. Verify requirements that apply to this manuscript, not merely the general instructions shown by a finder.

- Required ethics approval, consent, clinical-trial registration, reporting checklists, data-availability statements, and code or materials requirements.
- Rules for preprints, duplicate submission, prior conference versions, authorship, conflicts of interest, and corrections.
- Whether the journal accepts your language, study design, dataset, or geographic setting.
- Any artificial-intelligence declaration required for writing, image generation, analysis, translation, or editing.
Guidelines can change. Record the page date or access date and recheck it immediately before submission if several weeks have passed.

4. Verify indexing, discoverability, and preservation at the source
Do not treat an indexing badge on a finder or journal homepage as proof. Open the named indexing service and search for the exact journal title and ISSN. Confirm that the record is active and that the coverage includes the years and article types relevant to your work. A journal can be listed in one database while absent from another your institution requires.
Check preservation as well as discoverability. Look for a stated arrangement with a recognized digital preservation service, stable article URLs, and persistent identifiers such as DOIs. Verify that article-level identifiers resolve and that the publisher explains what happens to the archive if publication operations stop. If a funder or university specifies particular indexes, repositories, or preservation programs, obtain written confirmation that this journal satisfies them.
5. Inspect peer review, editors, and publisher transparency
A trustworthy journal explains who handles manuscripts and how review works. Read the peer-review description for the review model, number or role of reviewers, decision stages, appeals, conflicts, and procedures for suspected misconduct. Check that the editorial board lists identifiable scholars with current affiliations; independently verify a sample of names rather than assuming a list is genuine.

Look for a verifiable publisher address, functioning contact channels, publication-ethics policies, corrections and retractions procedures, and membership or adherence statements where claimed. Promises of guaranteed acceptance, acceptance without substantive review, or implausibly rapid peer review are warning signs. A short stated timeline can be legitimate, but it should describe editorial handling and review separately and should not replace a transparent process.

6. Calculate the real cost and contractual terms
Record every charge that could apply to your manuscript. The relevant amount depends on article type, access route, country or institution, and whether a waiver is available. Confirm when payment is due and whether a fee is charged only after acceptance.

Compare total cost and obligations, not a headline “open access” label. Ask your library or funder whether an institutional agreement covers the journal and whether the license, embargo, and repository requirements are acceptable.
7. Make a documented go/no-go decision
Build an independent shortlist of two or more candidates, then score each only on evidence you have verified. A useful order is: scope and readership fit; article-type eligibility; ethics and policy compatibility; editorial transparency; indexing and preservation; total author cost and waiver eligibility; license and copyright; funder or institutional compliance; and realistic editorial and production timelines.

Keep the journal’s official answers, fee quote, and policy pages in a folder with the manuscript version submitted. If any critical fact cannot be confirmed, pause the submission and contact the editorial office using details on the official site. Do not infer an answer from a ranking, badge, or automated email.

How to read the major finder services
Publisher finders have useful but bounded coverage. The following descriptions are publisher-reported portfolio information accessed in October 2026, not a count of all journals suitable for your field.

Neither a high relevance position nor a favorable metric predicts acceptance. A finder can also reproduce errors in the abstract you provide, misunderstand a specialized method, or favor journals with more indexed text. Run the same manuscript through your disciplinary knowledge, library resources, and the journal’s primary pages.

When two or more journals survive the initial checks, compare them in a single worksheet so that a spectacular metric does not hide a policy problem.

Metrics can inform the discussion, but they are only one input. A lower-metric journal with exact scope fit, transparent review, compliant licensing, and a realistic schedule may be the stronger choice for your paper.

AI-use, confidentiality, and author responsibility
If AI helped draft, translate, edit, analyze, generate images, or prepare code, check the target journal’s specific policy before submission. Policies differ by publisher and by type of assistance.
Elsevier’s policy tells authors to examine an AI tool’s privacy and confidentiality terms before entering inputs such as an unpublished manuscript, and to check generated material for factual errors and bias. It distinguishes substantive assistance with manuscript text, which must be disclosed under its policy, from basic spelling and grammar checks. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors states that humans remain responsible for accuracy, appropriate attribution, and review of AI-generated content because such output can be authoritative-sounding yet incorrect, incomplete, or biased. Its recommendations are available at ICMJE Recommendations. Apply the target journal’s rules even when they are stricter than a general guideline.
- Do not paste confidential patient information, proprietary data, peer-review material, or an unpublished manuscript into a tool whose retention and training terms you cannot verify.
- Keep a private record of tools used, dates, prompts or transformations that materially affected the work, and the human checks performed.
- Verify every citation, quotation, number, image, code result, and claim produced or transformed by AI.
- Disclose use in the location and wording the journal requests; do not list an AI system as an author.
- Ensure that all authors approve the final manuscript and accept responsibility for its content.

A practical submission checklist
Mark each item with the URL or document where you found the answer. Submit only after every critical item is confirmed.
- Exact title, ISSN, publisher, and official URL agree.
- Aims and scope fit the manuscript’s question, method, audience, and article type.
- Several recent articles demonstrate comparable work.
- The current author guide accepts the format and states all required materials.
- Ethics, consent, data, code, reporting, and conflict disclosures are feasible.
- Indexing claims are confirmed in the named services; preservation and DOI arrangements are clear.
- Peer review, editorial board, appeals, corrections, and misconduct procedures are transparent.
- Total charges, taxes, payment timing, waivers, license, copyright, and embargo terms are documented.
- Funder and institutional requirements are satisfied in writing where necessary.
- AI tools used on the work comply with confidentiality rules and the journal’s disclosure policy.
- No critical question remains unanswered; any clarification from the editorial office is saved.
Only after this checklist is complete should you choose the submission portal and upload the manuscript. The value of an AI finder is speed at the discovery stage; the responsibility for a defensible journal choice remains with the authors.
