To verify an AI-generated quote, open the linked source, find the passage, and check both its exact wording and attribution. Then confirm that the source supports the claim beside the link. A citation is a useful anchor for checking evidence—not proof that the quote or claim is true.
Can AI make up quotes or citations?
Yes. AI-generated answers can include fabricated quotations and citations, and a confident tone does not make them reliable. OpenAI advises users to visit sources directly and says: “Always verify quotes, data, technical information or references to external documents.” That warning applies to important claims even when an answer includes a link or uses web search.
This does not mean every model-generated quote is false. It means you should treat the quotation and its citation as separate claims: the words may be inaccurate, the attribution may be wrong, or the link may not support either one.

- Open the cited source. Follow the link itself rather than relying on the model’s description of a page or a citation-shaped reference.
- Locate the passage. Search the page for distinctive words from the quote. In a long document or PDF, use a page number or location reference if one is provided.
- Compare the wording. Check that the quoted words appear as presented. Look closely at ellipses, omissions, or edits that might change the meaning.
- Check the attribution. Verify that the person or organization named actually said or published the words. A passage appearing on a page does not, by itself, prove the speaker named by the model.
- Check what the passage supports. Make sure it backs the statement attached to the quote, rather than merely mentioning the same topic.
- Check the source’s authority and date. Prefer the original publisher for a quotation. For facts that can change, make sure the source is current enough for the claim.
If you cannot locate the passage or establish the attribution, do not present the words as a verified direct quote. Paraphrase only what the source actually establishes, or leave the quotation out.

What makes a citation useful to readers?
A good citation takes readers to the relevant evidence and makes its connection to the claim clear. Government of Canada guidance says, “Citations help users verify the answer and provide a link for the next step.” Its content guidance for AI help applications emphasizes choosing the correct page and placing citations close enough to the answer that readers can see what they support.
- Authority: Is this the original source or a reliable source for the claim?
- Specificity: Does the link lead to the relevant page or passage, rather than a generic homepage?
- Support: Does the linked material substantiate the attached wording and claim?
- Visibility: Is the link close enough to the claim for readers to understand the connection?
- Recency: Is the material current enough for a fact that may have changed?
A visible link is an anchor: it helps readers inspect evidence. It cannot make an unsupported claim accurate.

What if the answer includes search citations?
Search can help find current or verifiable sources, but a search citation still needs inspection. OpenAI’s guidance on searching the web with ChatGPT notes that search citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Open the linked page, confirm that it supports the answer, and check whether its date suits the claim.

When creating content for publication, review the claim and its source yourself. Google Search Central says, “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.” Its guidance on generative AI content reinforces that AI output needs human review.

How to make citations easier to verify
If you are building a system that generates cited answers, give it source material in a readable form and define how citations should appear. OpenAI’s citation-formatting guidance discusses citable units, stable source IDs, citation formats, and validation. Citations tied to identifiable source passages are easier to inspect than references that point vaguely to a whole source.
Some systems can attach citations to locations within documents supplied to them. Anthropic’s citations documentation describes this approach and notes that it depends on providing source documents and enabling the feature. A location-specific citation can speed up checking, but the reader still needs to confirm that the passage supports the answer.

Keep the source link beside the claim it supports, and verify the underlying passage before using a direct quotation. If the wording, attribution, or support cannot be confirmed, label the uncertainty plainly, paraphrase only what is supported, or omit the quote. The link makes the evidence inspectable; the check establishes whether it holds up.
