Do not trust AI-generated decompiled code because it looks plausible. Treat it as an unverified draft. The defensible path is to establish a reproducible baseline, confirm what the original binary actually does, recreate the original compiler environment, compile the candidate, compare generated objects or the complete image, and then run differential and game-level tests. Human review and a permanent evidence trail are release requirements, not optional polish.
No published accuracy percentage can tell you that a particular reconstructed function is correct. A byte-identical build under the right toolchain is the strongest evidence of a matching decompilation; a behaviorally equivalent reimplementation is a different result and must be labeled that way.
Define what “correct” means before reviewing the output
“Correct” can mean several different things in a porting project. Decide which claim you are trying to prove, because each requires different evidence.

| Claim | What it means | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|
| Source-level plausibility | The reconstructed C or C++ expresses a reasonable interpretation of the machine code. | Disassembly, control-flow, data-flow, ABI, and type review. |
| Semantic equivalence | The candidate produces equivalent observable behavior for the tested inputs and states. | Deterministic differential execution, unit tests, fuzzing, and game-level traces. |
| Matching decompilation | The candidate rebuilds to the same instructions and bytes as the original under the original build conditions. | Matched compiler, flags, libraries, linker arrangement, and object or full-image comparison. |
| Shipping readiness | The port works in supported installation, hardware, service, save, and lifecycle scenarios. | Release-style pass/fail gates plus reviewable provenance. |
A function can be semantically equivalent yet produce different instructions because optimization, structure packing, floating-point settings, library versions, or link order changed. Conversely, a byte match is powerful evidence for that build configuration but does not replace testing of assets, platform services, or integration code.

Confirm rights, scope, and the exact target
Start with a lawfully obtained copy and write down the scope of the work. Record the target platform, executable or ROM version, region, build hash, and intended use (private interoperability analysis, preservation, internal development, modding, or public distribution). These categories can carry different obligations.
In the United States, 17 U.S.C. §1201(f) (2023 edition) describes a narrow interoperability exception for a lawful copy when analysis identifies interoperability elements that were not previously readily available and the acts do not infringe. It is not a blanket permission to distribute a game’s code or assets, and it does not settle the law in other jurisdictions. Obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice before publishing a port or redistributing proprietary material.
- Keep the original media or download provenance and its cryptographic hash.
- Separate original assets and binaries from generated source and build products.
- Document which platform SDKs, headers, libraries, and emulators are authorized for the project.
- Set a written boundary for what the AI may see, especially if a hosted service could receive uploaded binaries or source.
Freeze a reproducible baseline first
Before asking an agent to change code, make the unmodified project build. A baseline that cannot be rebuilt makes every later comparison ambiguous.
Archive the original inputs
- Original executable or ROM and its hash.
- Linker map, symbol information, relocation data, and asset-extraction inputs when available.
- Compiler family and exact version, assembler, linker, standard library, SDK, and build scripts.
- All optimization, debug, structure-packing, instruction-set, floating-point, endianness, and alignment options.
- Link order, library versions, generated files, environment variables, and post-link steps.
- Emulator or hardware model, firmware, display mode, controller configuration, timing settings, and save-state format.
Prove the baseline
- Build from a clean checkout with no untracked generated files.
- Hash each important intermediate and the final image.
- Compare the result with the known original. Record every difference instead of silently accepting it.
- Run a short deterministic smoke trace: boot, reach a known state, exercise input, and save the resulting state or replay.
- Store the build log and environment description beside the hashes.
A practical rule from reverse-engineering workflows is to get the project building to a byte-identical image before involving an agent. If that is impossible because original components are missing, mark the baseline as incomplete and limit the claim you make later to semantic or behavioral equivalence.
Challenge the AI draft with static analysis
Use the binary as the authority, not the model’s names, comments, or explanations. Ghidra is an NSA-maintained software reverse-engineering framework that provides disassembly, decompilation, graphing, scripting, and automation. Comparable static-analysis tools are useful too; the important requirement is that every assertion can be checked against machine code.

Verify control flow and calls
- Compare each conditional, loop, early return, switch, and error path with the disassembly.
- Check that calls point to the right targets and use the correct argument order and return convention.
- Follow cross-references to confirm that a guessed global, field, or callback is actually read or written where claimed.
- Inspect indirect calls, jump tables, virtual dispatch, and tail calls; these are common places for a model to invent a simpler structure.
Verify data and the ABI
- Reconstruct stack layout, register use, callee-saved registers, and stack cleanup according to the target platform ABI.
- Check integer widths, signedness, pointer size, bit fields, unions, padding, alignment, and endianness.
- Distinguish packed on-disk or network data from naturally aligned in-memory structures.
- Confirm floating-point precision, conversion, comparison, and exceptional-value handling.
- Trace writes to determine whether a field is state, a counter, a pointer, or an alias for another object.
Names such as playerHealth and comments such as “collision check” are hypotheses until references or runtime observations support them. Keep an uncertainty note for every inferred type or purpose, and remove the note only after evidence resolves it.
Use the decompiler as an aid, not a proof
Decompiler output can obscure compiler idioms, merged variables, signed arithmetic, and undefined-behavior assumptions. Compare the generated pseudocode with the graph and raw instructions. When the model “cleans up” a sequence, preserve the original ordering until you have demonstrated that reordering is safe for all relevant inputs and memory effects.
Recreate the original toolchain
Matching decompilation depends on the original compiler, the right version, and the right flags. A modern compiler set to a similar optimization level is not necessarily equivalent.
Pin the variables that change code generation
- Compiler and assembler version, target CPU and instruction-set options.
- Optimization level, inlining, link-time optimization, whole-program options, and debug settings.
- Structure packing, alignment, calling convention, exception and runtime-library choices.
- Floating-point mode, fast-math behavior, rounding, and denormal handling.
- Standard-library and SDK revision, startup objects, and linker script.
- Object-file order, section placement, alignment fillers, symbol visibility, and post-link patching.
Containerize or otherwise record this environment so another contributor can reproduce it. If the original compiler is unavailable, test a close match and label the result honestly as a non-identical build; do not call it a matching decompilation merely because the game appears to run.
Compile the candidate and compare artifacts
Move from cheap checks to strong checks. Do not wait for a full game build to discover a syntax or type error.

A byte-identical object or image is the strongest evidence that the source, toolchain, and link context reproduce the original. If bytes differ, classify the difference: source logic, compiler choice, library code, link order, section placement, relocation, or an unknown cause. A visual similarity in decompiled text is not a substitute for this comparison.

Interpret non-matches correctly
| Result | Safe conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Byte-identical function or object | Strong evidence of a matching reconstruction in that context. | Continue with integration and runtime gates. |
| Different bytes, same tested behavior | Possible semantic equivalence, not a matching decompilation. | Expand tests and document the intentional distinction. |
| Different bytes and divergent behavior | The candidate is not verified. | Return to disassembly, ABI, toolchain, and failing trace. |
| Cannot reproduce the build | No claim stronger than the available evidence is justified. | Recover missing inputs or narrow the release scope. |
Run differential tests against the original
Behavioral evidence must compare the original and candidate under the same conditions. Use deterministic inputs, save states, replay files, or scripted traces so a failure can be reproduced exactly.
Cover function boundaries
- Normal inputs, zero and maximum values, negative values where types permit them, and malformed or truncated data.
- Initialization, repeated calls, reset paths, cleanup, and error returns.
- Memory boundaries, overlapping buffers, null or invalid handles, and allocation failure paths when they are reachable.
- Timing-sensitive calls, random-number seeds, and fixed-point or floating-point edge cases.
Cover game behavior
- Boot and initialization order.
- Game-loop timing, input polling, pause, and resume.
- Collision and physics outcomes.
- Rendering state, resolution and display modes, and audio sequencing.
- Save, load, migration, and corrupted-save handling.
- Platform services, multiplayer or network integration where supported, and controller behavior.
Capture outputs at useful boundaries: return values, memory snapshots, event streams, rendered-frame hashes where appropriate, audio events, and save-file changes. When traces diverge, find the first differing observation rather than comparing only the final screen.
Add negative testing
Wrap reconstructed functions in unit tests, fuzz malformed inputs, and run AddressSanitizer or an equivalent memory tool where the target environment permits it. Preserve every discovered failure as a regression test. Sanitizers can change timing and memory layout, so use them as a diagnostic configuration in addition to the release-like configuration, not as proof that the shipping binary is identical.
Apply release-style readiness gates
Microsoft’s build verification test guidance treats a focused suite as a readiness gate before full certification. Apply the same discipline to a port: every gate should have a named test, a pass/fail result, and an attached artifact.

Do not convert a single successful playthrough into a general correctness claim. Record the exact build hash, platform, configuration, input trace, and result for each gate.
Keep provenance and require explainable review
AI assistance does not reduce responsibility for the result. A contributor should be able to explain every accepted function and state exactly how it was verified.
Retain, at minimum:
- Model name and version, when available, plus the prompt or instruction used.
- Source function or address range, decompiler settings, and any analyst annotations.
- Generated patch, human edits, compiler command, warnings, assembly, object and image diffs.
- Test inputs, save states or replays, environment configuration, failures, and regression tests.
- Reviewer identity, decision, unresolved assumptions, and the evidence supporting acceptance.
Reject code that cannot be explained or whose verification cannot be reproduced. If a reviewer changes a model-generated function, preserve the before-and-after versions so later investigators can distinguish generated logic from human corrections.

| Legal claim | Usually tied to interoperability analysis and exact artifacts. | May involve additional distribution, asset, or platform obligations. |
Troubleshoot common verification failures
The baseline never matches
Check the executable hash, region and revision, SDK and library versions, link order, post-link patches, generated assets, and compiler flags. A missing startup object or a different alignment rule can shift every later address. Until the baseline is understood, do not blame the AI draft.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The decompiled types look reasonable but the function fails
Recheck signedness, width, pointer arithmetic, structure padding, endianness, and calling convention. Compare the first divergent register or memory write in a deterministic trace. Replace invented names with neutral labels until cross-references prove their meaning.

The code behaves correctly but does not match bytes
Classify it as a semantic port unless you can isolate a toolchain or link-context difference. Inspect optimization, inlining, floating-point mode, library calls, section placement, and relocation. Do not claim a matching decompilation from gameplay success alone.
Only long play sessions fail
Extend traces around timing, save/load, resource lifetime, repeated initialization, and suspend/resume. Add stress and malformed-input cases, preserve the smallest failing replay, and turn it into a regression test.
A hosted AI workflow creates uncertainty
Determine whether executable data, source, prompts, telemetry, or generated patches leave the local environment. If the project’s rights or confidentiality prohibit that transfer, use a local workflow or obtain explicit authorization. Record the decision as part of provenance.
Verification checklist before shipping
- Rights, jurisdiction, target version, region, and permitted use are documented.
- Original binary or ROM, hashes, build inputs, and environment are archived.
- The unmodified project builds reproducibly, or the limitation is explicitly recorded.
- Disassembly, cross-references, control flow, ABI, data layout, and endianness were reviewed.
- Compiler, flags, SDK, libraries, linker order, and floating-point settings are pinned.
- Candidate syntax and type checks pass, with warnings reviewed.
- Assembly, object, and full-image comparisons are saved and classified.
- Deterministic differential traces cover normal, boundary, malformed, and timing-sensitive cases.
- Unit tests, fuzzing, and sanitizer runs are used where the target permits them.
- Clean-install, launch, input, display, suspend/resume, save, performance, service, and hardware gates pass.
- Every accepted function has provenance, a reviewer, an explanation, and reproducible evidence.
The practical decision is simple: ship only the claim your evidence supports. Byte identity supports a matching-decompilation claim; broad differential and release testing support a semantic-port claim; neither replaces legal review or provenance.
