Do not connect your wallet until you can verify the promotion independently, confirm the exact website and account, and explain every action your wallet requests. A legitimate-looking logo, social post, email, or promised USDC amount is not authentication. Stop immediately if a page asks for your recovery phrase, demands an unexplained payment, or requests a token approval whose amount, asset, network, or recipient you cannot identify.
The safest answer in one minute
Use this sequence before interacting with any USDC promotion:
- Find the organization through an address or account you already trust, rather than following the promotion’s link.
- Locate the same offer on that independently reached official channel.
- Check the domain and account identity character by character for impersonation.
- Read the eligibility rules, deadline, network, and required action; do not fill gaps with assumptions.
- Never enter or send a recovery phrase.
- In your wallet, distinguish a simple connection from a transaction or token-spending approval.
- Reject any approval, transfer, or fee you cannot explain in plain language.
Circle’s MiCA USDC White Paper explicitly lists phishing, fake giveaways, identity theft, fake USDC tokens, and fake USDC airdrops among scam patterns. That warning applies to the category, not to any particular offer. The available evidence cannot authenticate an unspecified promotion or provide a universal registry of legitimate campaigns.

USDC is a digital dollar token, but a promotion can still be an impersonation, a fake token claim, or a mechanism for getting you to sign an unrelated blockchain action. The name “USDC” in a headline does not prove that the issuer, website, contract, or terms are genuine.

Self-custody changes the consequence of a mistake. You, rather than a bank or support desk, control the wallet keys and approve blockchain actions. Circle warns that an incorrectly sent transfer, or assets made inaccessible through user error, may not be recoverable. A promotion that pressures you to act quickly is therefore asking you to accept risk before you have verified what will happen.
Step 1: Find the promotion independently
Do not use the promotion as its own proof
Open a new browser tab and navigate to the named organization using an address you already know, a saved bookmark, or an independently verified account. Then search that official destination for the campaign. Do not treat a link in an unsolicited email, direct message, advertisement, comment, or forwarded post as confirmation.
This matters because an attacker can copy a genuine logo, wording, announcement image, and executive name while replacing only the destination link. Circle’s white paper identifies impersonation and phishing through social networks and email as known scam patterns.

A genuine campaign should be described in an official place with enough information to make the action understandable. Record the stated eligibility, start and end dates, supported network, amount or calculation method, and the exact action participants must take. If the post says only “connect now” or “claim before the timer ends,” treat the missing details as a reason to stop, not as an invitation to guess.
Absence from one official page does not prove that an offer is fraudulent; organizations may publish campaigns in different channels. It does mean you have not independently verified it. Continue only when the named organization confirms the same terms through a channel you reached without using the promotion’s link.
Step 2: Check the website and account identity
Inspect every character
Compare the address with the organization’s known address. Watch for misspellings, extra words, substituted characters, unusual subdomains, and lookalike top-level domains. A secure padlock only encrypts the connection; it does not establish who operates the site.
For social accounts, inspect the exact handle, account age, verification status where available, posting history, and links in the profile. A copied avatar or a blue checkmark alone is not enough to establish identity. Impersonators often create an account that resembles the real one and then use urgency to push a giveaway or airdrop.
Match the details, not just the design
Compare the independently reached announcement with the promotion page. The organization name, campaign dates, network, eligibility conditions, support contact, and requested wallet action should be consistent. A mismatch in even one material term is a stop signal until the organization explains it through an independent channel.
The available Circle materials identify impersonation as a risk but do not provide a complete, permanent list of official domains or social accounts. You must verify the current identity of the particular organization yourself; do not infer legitimacy from a domain that merely looks familiar.

Step 3: Treat your recovery phrase as off-limits
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, can restore access to a self-custody wallet. The independent USDC security guide states that no legitimate service, support agent, or website should ask you to provide it. Never type it into a promotion form, screen-share it, send it in a message, or photograph it for someone claiming to help with a claim.
A request for the phrase is enough to end the interaction. Do not try to “verify” the request by asking the same suspicious account for reassurance. If you have already disclosed the phrase, assume the wallet is compromised and follow your wallet provider’s established emergency procedure from a separately verified support channel; do not take instructions from the promotion page.

Unsolicited airdrop-claim pages are particularly risky because they can present a familiar wallet interface while directing you to reveal credentials or sign an unrelated action. A page cannot become legitimate because it displays your public address or recognizes your wallet balance.
Step 4: Understand what “Connect wallet” actually means
Connecting a wallet and authorizing a blockchain action are different events. A connection can allow an application to see a public wallet address and request subsequent actions. It does not, by itself, prove that the application is trustworthy, and it is not the same as granting permission to spend USDC.
Wallet interfaces differ by wallet, network, and application, so read the exact wording shown on your screen. Close the prompt if you cannot identify what it is asking. Never approve a request merely because the page says it is needed to check eligibility.
| Wallet interaction | What the evidence establishes | What to check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Connect wallet | The site may see a public wallet address or request further actions; a connection is distinct from a spending allowance. | Why the site needs the connection, which account and network are selected, and whether the independently verified campaign actually requires it. |
| Token approval | An approval sets an allowance, or spending cap, for a specified token. In Circle’s USDC Bridge example, it sets the maximum USDC the bridge can access and requires a network fee. | Asset, network, spender or destination, allowance amount, fee, and whether the action matches the stated purpose. |
| Transfer | USDC is sent to an address. Circle warns that an incorrect or inaccessible transfer may not be recoverable. | Recipient address, amount, network, fee, and the reason the promotion says you must send funds. |
| Recovery-phrase request | The phrase provides access to the wallet and should not be supplied to a service, support agent, or promotion site. | Do not continue. Close the page and use an independently verified support route if assistance is needed. |
Step 5: Read every approval request
What an allowance does
When a token approval is requested, the application is asking for permission to spend up to a stated amount of that token under the terms shown by the wallet. Circle’s USDC Bridge documentation uses this mechanism for a real bridge transaction: the allowance defines the maximum USDC Circle can access for that operation and a network fee is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat legitimate bridge use case does not validate a promotion site. A scam page can ask for an approval using the same technical mechanism. The important question is not whether the word “approval” appears, but whether you understand the asset, limit, network, spender, and purpose.
Questions to answer before signing
- Is the asset actually USDC on the network you intended to use, rather than a token with a similar name?
- What exact allowance or spending cap is displayed?
- Which account or contract is authorized to spend it?
- Does the network match the promotion’s independently verified terms?
- What network fee will be charged, and is that fee expected?
- Can you explain why this approval is necessary instead of merely connecting your wallet?
If any answer is unclear, reject the request. Do not rely on a website’s description when the wallet prompt shows different details. The wallet prompt is the action you would actually sign.
Step 6: Stop at unexplained transfers, deposits, and fees
Be especially cautious when a promotion says you must send USDC first to unlock a prize, pay a verification charge, activate a larger reward, or receive a refund. The reviewed Circle materials do not validate any such requirement. Sending funds is a separate, consequential action, not a normal consequence of simply checking eligibility.

Before any transfer, identify the recipient address and confirm it through an independent official channel. Check the amount, network, and fee in the wallet. If the promotion gives you only a countdown, a chat message, or a copied screenshot as proof, stop rather than allowing urgency to replace verification.

Circle advises users to review transaction details before confirming and warns that incorrectly sent or inaccessible USDC may not be recoverable. Blockchain confirmation is not a customer-service dispute process; a mistaken destination can leave you without a practical recovery route.
Step 7: Verify the token and network details
Promotions may use the word USDC while directing you to a different network or a token with a similar ticker. Confirm the network named in the independently obtained campaign announcement and compare it with the network selected in your wallet. Do not switch networks merely because the page says the claim will fail otherwise.
Check the token name, symbol, and contract information displayed by your wallet or another source you reached independently. A familiar symbol is not sufficient identification. If the wallet shows an asset or network you did not expect, reject the action and return to the official announcement for clarification.
Keep a written record of the verified campaign terms before opening the claim page. This makes it easier to notice when the page changes the network, amount, or required action after you connect.
Step 8: Use a decision gate before signing
Use the following gate for each prompt, not just once per session:
- Identity: Did you reach the organization independently, and does the exact campaign appear on that channel?
- Purpose: Can you state what this action is supposed to accomplish?
- Scope: Is the prompt a connection, an approval, a transfer, or something else?
- Details: Do the asset, network, amount, recipient, allowance, and fee match the verified terms?
- Credentials: Is the page asking for anything it should never need, especially a recovery phrase?
- Recovery: If the action is wrong, do you understand that it may be irreversible or unrecoverable?
A “no” or “I’m not sure” at any gate means do not sign. Close the wallet prompt, disconnect if your wallet offers that control, and verify the question through a separate official channel. Do not let a promotion’s countdown determine your risk tolerance.

“Connect to see whether you qualify”
Connecting may expose a public address and lead to more prompts. Verify the campaign first, then inspect the connection request and selected network. If the next prompt requests an approval or transfer that was not clearly described, decline it.
“Approve USDC to receive more USDC”
This is an allowance request, not a simple connection. Require a clear explanation of the spender, cap, network, fee, and business purpose. If the promotion cannot explain why it needs spending authority, do not approve it.

“Send a small amount to unlock your reward”
Treat the requested payment as an unexplained transfer until independently verified. Confirm the requirement through an official channel and inspect the recipient and network. If you cannot verify both, do not send funds.
“Support needs your seed phrase to fix the claim”
Stop. The recovery phrase should never be disclosed to a website, support account, or service. End the conversation and locate support through a known official address.
“The token is USDC, so the site must be official”
The ticker does not authenticate a website, contract, account, or promotion. Verify the organization, domain, terms, network, and wallet action separately.
What Circle’s bridge documentation does—and does not—prove
Circle describes its USDC Bridge as a service in which users connect their own wallet and interact directly with blockchain networks while retaining control of their wallet and asset use. Its instructions explain the approval and network-fee steps for that bridge.

They are not a blanket guarantee for every site that uses the words “USDC,” “bridge,” “claim,” or “promotion.” A promotion must still be authenticated through the named organization’s current official information, and each wallet prompt must be checked independently.
After you reject or complete an interaction
If you rejected the request
Do not return through the same link simply because the page says the claim failed. Save the domain and account details for reporting, then verify any follow-up through an independent official channel. Avoid arguing with the account or clicking additional “解除” or “security” links it sends.
If you connected but did not sign
A connection is not the same as an approval or transfer. Review what the wallet says was authorized, disconnect the site using your wallet’s available controls, and continue monitoring prompts. Do not assume that a connection proves safety or that it automatically drains funds.
If you signed an approval or transfer
Record the transaction details immediately: network, asset, amount or allowance, recipient or spender, and transaction identifier shown by the wallet. Use only independently verified wallet or issuer support resources to determine the next response. Because Circle warns that incorrect or inaccessible transfers may not be recoverable, act promptly without sharing your recovery phrase with anyone offering help.

Practical self-custody safeguards
- Keep campaign announcements, wallet prompts, and support conversations in separate browser tabs so you can compare terms without returning to a suspicious link.
- Read the complete wallet prompt, including expandable technical details, before selecting Confirm or Sign.
- Use a hardware wallet for larger holdings if it fits your security plan, but remember that it does not make a malicious approval safe; you still have to reject the wrong transaction.
- Never allow a support account to take control of your screen while your recovery phrase or signing prompt is visible.
- Assume that urgency is a persuasion technique, not evidence of authenticity.
Final verification checklist
- The offer appears on an official channel reached without its link.
- The domain and account handle match the organization’s independently verified identity.
- The eligibility, dates, network, amount, and required action are written clearly.
- No page or person asks for a recovery phrase.
- You know whether the wallet request is a connection, approval, transfer, or another action.
- The asset, network, allowance, recipient, and fee match the verified terms.
- You understand that an incorrect transfer or inaccessible USDC may not be recoverable.
If any item remains unresolved, do not connect or sign. No promotion is worth exchanging an uncertain claim for an action you cannot explain.
